출애굽기 32 장.

출32:1 백성이 모세가 산에서 내려옴이 더딤을 보고 모여 백성이 아론에게 이르러 말하되 일어나라 우리를 위하여 우리를 인도할 신을 만들라 이 모세 곧 우리를 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 낸 사람은 어찌 되었는지 알지 못함이니라

출32:2 아론이 그들에게 이르되 너희의 아내와 자녀의 귀에서 금 고리를 빼어 내게로 가져오라

출32:3 모든 백성이 그 귀에서 금 고리를 빼어 아론에게로 가져가매

출32:4 아론이 그들의 손에서 금 고리를 받아 부어서 조각칼로 새겨 송아지 형상을 만드니 그들이 말하되 이스라엘아 이는 너희를 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 낸 너희의 신이로다 하는지라

출32:5 아론이 보고 그 앞에 제단을 쌓고 이에 아론이 공포하여 이르되 내일은 여호와의 절일이니라 하니

출32:6 이튿날에 그들이 일찍이 일어나 번제를 드리며 화목제를 드리고 백성이 앉아서 먹고 마시며 일어나서 뛰놀더라

출32:7 여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 너는 내려가라 네가 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 낸 네 백성이 부패하였도다

출32:8 그들이 내가 그들에게 명령한 길을 속히 떠나 자기를 위하여 송아지를 부어 만들고 그것을 예배하며 그것에게 제물을 드리며 말하기를 이스라엘아 이는 너희를 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 낸 너희 신이라 하였도다

출32:9 여호와께서 또 모세에게 이르시되 내가 이 백성을 보니 목이 뻣뻣한 백성이로다

출32:10 그런즉 내가 하는 대로 두라 내가 그들에게 진노하여 그들을 진멸하고 너를 큰 나라가 되게 하리라

출32:11 모세가 그의 하나님 여호와께 구하여 이르되 여호와여 어찌하여 그 큰 권능과 강한 손으로 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 내신 주의 백성에게 진노하시나이까

출32:12 어찌하여 애굽 사람들이 이르기를 여호와가 자기의 백성을 산에서 죽이고 지면에서 진멸하려는 악한 의도로 인도해 내었다고 말하게 하시려 하나이까 주의 맹렬한 노를 그치시고 뜻을 돌이키사 주의 백성에게 이 화를 내리지 마옵소서

출32:13 주의 종 아브라함과 이삭과 이스라엘을 기억하소서 주께서 그들을 위하여 주를 가리켜 맹세하여 이르시기를 내가 너희의 자손을 하늘의 별처럼 많게 하고 내가 허락한 이 온 땅을 너희의 자손에게 주어 영원한 기업이 되게 하리라 하셨나이다

출32:14 여호와께서 뜻을 돌이키사 말씀하신 화를 그 백성에게 내리지 아니하시니라

출32:15 모세가 돌이켜 산에서 내려오는데 두 증거판이 그의 손에 있고 그 판의 양면 이쪽 저쪽에 글자가 있으니

출32:16 그 판은 하나님이 만드신 것이요 글자는 하나님이 쓰셔서 판에 새기신 것이더라

출32:17 여호수아가 백성들의 요란한 소리를 듣고 모세에게 말하되 진중에서 싸우는 소리가 나나이다

출32:18 모세가 이르되 이는 승전가도 아니요 패하여 부르짖는 소리도 아니라 내가 듣기에는 노래하는 소리로다 하고

출32:19 진에 가까이 이르러 그 송아지와 그 춤추는 것들을 보고 크게 노하여 손에서 그 판들을 산 아래로 던져 깨뜨리니라

출32:20 모세가 그들이 만든 송아지를 가져다가 불살라 부수어 가루를 만들어 물에 뿌려 이스라엘 자손에게 마시게 하니라

출32:21 모세가 아론에게 이르되 이 백성이 당신에게 어떻게 하였기에 당신이 그들을 큰 죄에 빠지게 하였느냐

출32:22 아론이 이르되 내 주여 노하지 마소서 이 백성의 악함을 당신이 아나이다

출32:23 그들이 내게 말하기를 우리를 위하여 우리를 인도할 신을 만들라 이 모세 곧 우리를 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 낸 사람은 어찌 되었는지 알 수 없노라 하기에

출32:24 내가 그들에게 이르기를 금이 있는 자는 빼내라 한즉 그들이 그것을 내게로 가져왔기로 내가 불에 던졌더니 이 송아지가 나왔나이다

출32:25 모세가 본즉 백성이 방자하니 이는 아론이 그들을 방자하게 하여 원수에게 조롱거리가 되게 하였음이라

출32:26 이에 모세가 진 문에 서서 이르되 누구든지 여호와의 편에 있는 자는 내게로 나아오라 하매 레위 자손이 다 모여 그에게로 가는지라

출32:27 모세가 그들에게 이르되 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 이렇게 말씀하시기를 너희는 각각 허리에 칼을 차고 진 이 문에서 저 문까지 왕래하며 각 사람이 그 형제를, 각 사람이 자기의 친구를, 각 사람이 자기의 이웃을 죽이라 하셨느니라

출32:28 레위 자손이 모세의 말대로 행하매 이 날에 백성 중에 삼천 명 가량이 죽임을 당하니라

출32:29 모세가 이르되 각 사람이 자기의 아들과 자기의 형제를 쳤으니 오늘 여호와께 헌신하게 되었느니라 그가 오늘 너희에게 복을 내리시리라

출32:30 이튿날 모세가 백성에게 이르되 너희가 큰 죄를 범하였도다 내가 이제 여호와께로 올라가노니 혹 너희를 위하여 속죄가 될까 하노라 하고

출32:31 모세가 여호와께로 다시 나아가 여짜오되 슬프도소이다 이 백성이 자기들을 위하여 금 신을 만들었사오니 큰 죄를 범하였나이다

출32:32 그러나 이제 그들의 죄를 사하시옵소서 그렇지 아니하시오면 원하건대 주께서 기록하신 책에서 내 이름을 지워 버려 주옵소서

출32:33 여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 누구든지 내게 범죄하면 내가 내 책에서 그를 지워 버리리라

출32:34 이제 가서 내가 네게 말한 곳으로 백성을 인도하라 내 사자가 네 앞서 가리라 그러나 내가 보응할 날에는 그들의 죄를 보응하리라

출32:35 여호와께서 백성을 치시니 이는 그들이 아론이 만든 바 그 송아지를 만들었음이더라

요한복음 11 장.

요11:1 어떤 병자가 있으니 이는 마리아와 그 자매 마르다의 마을 베다니에 사는 나사로라

요11:2 이 마리아는 향유를 주께 붓고 머리털로 주의 발을 닦던 자요 병든 나사로는 그의 오라버니더라

요11:3 이에 그 누이들이 예수께 사람을 보내어 이르되 주여 보시옵소서 사랑하시는 자가 병들었나이다 하니

요11:4 예수께서 들으시고 이르시되 이 병은 죽을 병이 아니라 하나님의 영광을 위함이요 하나님의 아들이 이로 말미암아 영광을 받게 하려 함이라 하시더라

요11:5 예수께서 본래 마르다와 그 동생과 나사로를 사랑하시더니

요11:6 나사로가 병들었다 함을 들으시고 그 계시던 곳에 이틀을 더 유하시고

요11:7 그 후에 제자들에게 이르시되 유대로 다시 가자 하시니

요11:8 제자들이 말하되 랍비여 방금도 유대인들이 돌로 치려 하였는데 또 그리로 가시려 하나이까

요11:9 예수께서 대답하시되 낮이 열두 시간이 아니냐 사람이 낮에 다니면 이 세상의 빛을 보므로 실족하지 아니하고

요11:10 밤에 다니면 빛이 그 사람 안에 없는 고로 실족하느니라

요11:11 이 말씀을 하신 후에 또 이르시되 우리 친구 나사로가 잠들었도다 그러나 내가 깨우러 가노라

요11:12 제자들이 이르되 주여 잠들었으면 낫겠나이다 하더라

요11:13 예수는 그의 죽음을 가리켜 말씀하신 것이나 그들은 잠들어 쉬는 것을 가리켜 말씀하심인줄 생각하는지라

요11:14 이에 예수께서 밝히 이르시되 나사로가 죽었느니라

요11:15 내가 거기 있지 아니한 것을 너희를 위하여 기뻐하노니 이는 너희로 믿게 하려 함이라 그러나 그에게로 가자 하시니

요11:16 디두모라고도 하는 도마가 다른 제자들에게 말하되 우리도 주와 함께 죽으러 가자 하니라

요11:17 예수께서 와서 보시니 나사로가 무덤에 있은 지 이미 나흘이라

요11:18 베다니는 예루살렘에서 가깝기가 한 오 리쯤 되매

요11:19 많은 유대인이 마르다와 마리아에게 그 오라비의 일로 위문하러 왔더니

요11:20 마르다는 예수께서 오신다는 말을 듣고 곧 나가 맞이하되 마리아는 집에 앉았더라

요11:21 마르다가 예수께 여짜오되 주께서 여기 계셨더라면 내 오라버니가 죽지 아니하였겠나이다

요11:22 그러나 나는 이제라도 주께서 무엇이든지 하나님께 구하시는 것을 하나님이 주실 줄을 아나이다

요11:23 예수께서 이르시되 네 오라비가 다시 살아나리라

요11:24 마르다가 이르되 마지막 날 부활 때에는 다시 살아날 줄을 내가 아나이다

요11:25 예수께서 이르시되 나는 부활이요 생명이니 나를 믿는 자는 죽어도 살겠고

요11:26 무릇 살아서 나를 믿는 자는 영원히 죽지 아니하리니 이것을 네가 믿느냐

요11:27 이르되 주여 그러하외다 주는 그리스도시요 세상에 오시는 하나님의 아들이신 줄 내가 믿나이다

요11:28 이 말을 하고 돌아가서 가만히 그 자매 마리아를 불러 말하되 선생님이 오셔서 너를 부르신다 하니

요11:29 마리아가 이 말을 듣고 급히 일어나 예수께 나아가매

요11:30 예수는 아직 마을로 들어오지 아니하시고 마르다가 맞이했던 곳에 그대로 계시더라

요11:31 마리아와 함께 집에 있어 위로하던 유대인들은 그가 급히 일어나 나가는 것을 보고 곡하러 무덤에 가는 줄로 생각하고 따라가더니

요11:32 마리아가 예수 계신 곳에 가서 뵈옵고 그 발 앞에 엎드리어 이르되 주께서 여기 계셨더라면 내 오라버니가 죽지 아니하였겠나이다 하더라

요11:33 예수께서 그가 우는 것과 또 함께 온 유대인들이 우는 것을 보시고 심령에 비통히 여기시고 불쌍히 여기사

요11:34 이르시되 그를 어디 두었느냐 이르되 주여 와서 보옵소서 하니

요11:35 예수께서 눈물을 흘리시더라

요11:36 이에 유대인들이 말하되 보라 그를 얼마나 사랑하셨는가 하며

요11:37 그 중 어떤 이는 말하되 맹인의 눈을 뜨게 한 이 사람이 그 사람은 죽지 않게 할 수 없었더냐 하더라

요11:38 이에 예수께서 다시 속으로 비통히 여기시며 무덤에 가시니 무덤이 굴이라 돌로 막았거늘

요11:39 예수께서 이르시되 돌을 옮겨 놓으라 하시니 그 죽은 자의 누이 마르다가 이르되 주여 죽은 지가 나흘이 되었으매 벌써 냄새가 나나이다

요11:40 예수께서 이르시되 내 말이 네가 믿으면 하나님의 영광을 보리라 하지 아니하였느냐 하시니

요11:41 돌을 옮겨 놓으니 예수께서 눈을 들어 우러러 보시고 이르시되 아버지여 내 말을 들으신 것을 감사하나이다

요11:42 항상 내 말을 들으시는 줄을 내가 알았나이다 그러나 이 말씀 하옵는 것은 둘러선 무리를 위함이니 곧 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 그들로 믿게 하려 함이니이다

요11:43 이 말씀을 하시고 큰 소리로 나사로야 나오라 부르시니

요11:44 죽은 자가 수족을 베로 동인 채로 나오는데 그 얼굴은 수건에 싸였더라 예수께서 이르시되 풀어 놓아 다니게 하라 하시니라

요11:45 마리아에게 와서 예수께서 하신 일을 본 많은 유대인이 그를 믿었으나

요11:46 그 중에 어떤 자는 바리새인들에게 가서 예수께서 하신 일을 알리니라

요11:47 이에 대제사장들과 바리새인들이 공회를 모으고 이르되 이 사람이 많은 표적을 행하니 우리가 어떻게 하겠느냐

요11:48 만일 그를 이대로 두면 모든 사람이 그를 믿을 것이요 그리고 로마인들이 와서 우리 땅과 민족을 빼앗아 가리라 하니

요11:49 그 중에 한 사람 그 해 대제사장인 가야바가 그들에게 말하되 너희가 아무 것도 알지 못하는도다

요11:50 한 사람이 백성을 위하여 죽어서 온 민족이 망하지 않게 되는 것이 너희에게 유익한 줄을 생각하지 아니하는도다 하였으니

요11:51 이 말은 스스로 함이 아니요 그 해에 대제사장이므로 예수께서 그 민족을 위하시고

요11:52 또 그 민족만 위할 뿐 아니라 흩어진 하나님의 자녀를 모아 하나가 되게 하기 위하여 죽으실 것을 미리 말함이러라

요11:53 이 날부터는 그들이 예수를 죽이려고 모의하니라

요11:54 그러므로 예수께서 다시 유대인 가운데 드러나게 다니지 아니하시고 여기를 떠나 빈 들 가까운 곳인 에브라임이라는 동네에 가서 제자들과 함께 거기 머무르시니라

요11:55 유대인의 유월절이 가까우매 많은 사람이 자기를 성결하게 하기 위하여 유월절 전에 시골서 예루살렘으로 올라갔더니

요11:56 그들이 예수를 찾으며 성전에 서서 서로 말하되 너희 생각에는 어떠하냐 그가 명절에 오지 아니하겠느냐 하니

요11:57 이는 대제사장들과 바리새인들이 누구든지 예수 있는 곳을 알거든 신고하여 잡게 하라 명령하였음이러라

잠언 8 장.

잠8:1 지혜가 부르지 아니하느냐 명철이 소리를 높이지 아니하느냐

잠8:2 그가 길 가의 높은 곳과 네 거리에 서며

잠8:3 성문 곁과 문 어귀와 여러 출입하는 문에서 불러 이르되

잠8:4 사람들아 내가 너희를 부르며 내가 인자들에게 소리를 높이노라

잠8:5 어리석은 자들아 너희는 명철할지니라 미련한 자들아 너희는 마음이 밝을지니라 너희는 들을지어다

잠8:6 내가 가장 선한 것을 말하리라 내 입술을 열어 정직을 내리라

잠8:7 내 입은 진리를 말하며 내 입술은 악을 미워하느니라

잠8:8 내 입의 말은 다 의로운즉 그 가운데에 굽은 것과 패역한 것이 없나니

잠8:9 이는 다 총명 있는 자가 밝히 아는 바요 지식 얻은 자가 정직하게 여기는 바니라

잠8:10 너희가 은을 받지 말고 나의 훈계를 받으며 정금보다 지식을 얻으라

잠8:11 대저 지혜는 진주보다 나으므로 원하는 모든 것을 이에 비교할 수 없음이니라

잠8:12 나 지혜는 명철로 주소를 삼으며 지식과 근신을 찾아 얻나니

잠8:13 여호와를 경외하는 것은 악을 미워하는 것이라 나는 교만과 거만과 악한 행실과 패역한 입을 미워하느니라

잠8:14 내게는 계략과 참 지식이 있으며 나는 명철이라 내게 능력이 있으므로

잠8:15 나로 말미암아 왕들이 치리하며 방백들이 공의를 세우며

잠8:16 나로 말미암아 재상과 존귀한 자 곧 모든 의로운 재판관들이 다스리느니라

잠8:17 나를 사랑하는 자들이 나의 사랑을 입으며 나를 간절히 찾는 자가 나를 만날 것이니라

잠8:18 부귀가 내게 있고 장구한 재물과 공의도 그러하니라

잠8:19 내 열매는 금이나 정금보다 나으며 내 소득은 순은보다 나으니라

잠8:20 나는 정의로운 길로 행하며 공의로운 길 가운데로 다니나니

잠8:21 이는 나를 사랑하는 자가 재물을 얻어서 그 곳간에 채우게 하려 함이니라

잠8:22 여호와께서 그 조화의 시작 곧 태초에 일하시기 전에 나를 가지셨으며

잠8:23 반세 전부터, 태초부터, 땅이 생기기 전부터 내가 세움을 받았나니

잠8:24 아직 바다가 생기지 아니하였고 큰 샘들이 있기 전에 내가 이미 났으며

잠8:25 산이 세워지기 전에, 언덕이 생기기 전에 내가 이미 났으니

잠8:26 하나님이 아직 땅도, 들도, 세상 진토의 근원도 짓지 아니하셨을 때에라

잠8:27 그가 하늘을 지으시며 궁창을 해면에 두르실 때에 내가 거기 있었고

잠8:28 그가 위로 구름 하늘을 견고하게 하시며 바다의 샘들을 힘 있게 하시며

잠8:29 바다의 한계를 정하여 물이 명령을 거스르지 못하게 하시며 또 땅의 기초를 정하실 때에

잠8:30 내가 그 곁에 있어서 창조자가 되어 날마다 그의 기뻐하신 바가 되었으며 항상 그 앞에서 즐거워하였으며

잠8:31 사람이 거처할 땅에서 즐거워하며 인자들을 기뻐하였느니라

잠8:32 아들들아 이제 내게 들으라 내 도를 지키는 자가 복이 있느니라

잠8:33 훈계를 들어서 지혜를 얻으라 그것을 버리지 말라

잠8:34 누구든지 내게 들으며 날마다 내 문 곁에서 기다리며 문설주 옆에서 기다리는 자는 복이 있나니

잠8:35 대저 나를 얻는 자는 생명을 얻고 여호와께 은총을 얻을 것임이니라

잠8:36 그러나 나를 잃는 자는 자기의 영혼을 해하는 자라 나를 미워하는 자는 사망을 사랑하느니라

에베소서 1 장.

엡1:1 하나님의 뜻으로 말미암아 그리스도 예수의 사도 된 바울은 에베소에 있는 성도들과 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 신실한 자들에게 편지하노니

엡1:2 하나님 우리 아버지와 주 예수 그리스도로부터 은혜와 평강이 너희에게 있을지어다

엡1:3 찬송하리로다 하나님 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지께서 그리스도 안에서 하늘에 속한 모든 신령한 복을 우리에게 주시되

엡1:4 곧 창세 전에 그리스도 안에서 우리를 택하사 우리로 사랑 안에서 그 앞에 거룩하고 흠이 없게 하시려고

엡1:5 그 기쁘신 뜻대로 우리를 예정하사 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 자기의 아들들이 되게 하셨으니

엡1:6 이는 그의 사랑하시는 자 안에서 우리에게 거저 주시는 바 그의 은혜의 영광을 찬송하게 하려는 것이라

엡1:7 우리는 그리스도 안에서 그의 은혜의 풍성함을 따라 그의 피로 말미암아 속량 곧 죄 사함을 받았느니라

엡1:8 이는 그가 모든 지혜와 총명을 우리에게 넘치게 하사

엡1:9 그 뜻의 비밀을 우리에게 알리신 것이요 그의 기뻐하심을 따라 그리스도 안에서 때가 찬 경륜을 위하여 예정하신 것이니

엡1:10 하늘에 있는 것이나 땅에 있는 것이 다 그리스도 안에서 통일되게 하려 하심이라

엡1:11 모든 일을 그의 뜻의 결정대로 일하시는 이의 계획을 따라 우리가 예정을 입어 그 안에서 기업이 되었으니

엡1:12 이는 우리가 그리스도 안에서 전부터 바라던 그의 영광의 찬송이 되게 하려 하심이라

엡1:13 그 안에서 너희도 진리의 말씀 곧 너희의 구원의 복음을 듣고 그 안에서 또한 믿어 약속의 성령으로 인치심을 받았으니

엡1:14 이는 우리의 기업의 보증이 되사 그 얻으신 것을 속량하시고 그의 영광을 찬송하게 하려 하심이라

엡1:15 이로 말미암아 주 예수 안에서 너희 믿음과 모든 성도를 향한 사랑을 나도 듣고

엡1:16 내가 기도할 때에 기억하며 너희로 말미암아 감사하기를 그치지 아니하고

엡1:17 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 하나님, 영광의 아버지께서 지혜와 계시의 영을 너희에게 주사 하나님을 알게 하시고

엡1:18 너희 마음의 눈을 밝히사 그의 부르심의 소망이 무엇이며 성도 안에서 그 기업의 영광의 풍성함이 무엇이며

엡1:19 그의 힘의 위력으로 역사하심을 따라 믿는 우리에게 베푸신 능력의 지극히 크심이 어떠한 것을 너희로 알게 하시기를 구하노라

엡1:20 그의 능력이 그리스도 안에서 역사하사 죽은 자들 가운데서 다시 살리시고 하늘에서 자기의 오른편에 앉히사

엡1:21 모든 통치와 권세와 능력과 주권과 이 세상뿐 아니라 오는 세상에 일컫는 모든 이름 위에 뛰어나게 하시고

엡1:22 또 만물을 그의 발 아래에 복종하게 하시고 그를 만물 위에 교회의 머리로 삼으셨느니라

엡1:23 교회는 그의 몸이니 만물 안에서 만물을 충만케 하시는 이의 충만함이니라

Exodus 32.

32:1 When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, "Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him."

32:2 Aaron answered them, "Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me."

32:3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron.

32:4 He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt."

32:5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, "Tomorrow there will be a festival to the LORD."

32:6 So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.

32:7 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt.

32:8 They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, 'These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.'

32:9 "I have seen these people," the LORD said to Moses, "and they are a stiff-necked people.

32:10 Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation."

32:11 But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God. "O LORD," he said, "why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?

32:12 Why should the Egyptians say, 'It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth'? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people.

32:13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self: 'I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land I promised them, and it will be their inheritance forever.'"

32:14 Then the LORD relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.

32:15 Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands. They were inscribed on both sides, front and back.

32:16 The tablets were the work of God; the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.

32:17 When Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, "There is the sound of war in the camp."

32:18 Moses replied: "It is not the sound of victory, it is not the sound of defeat; it is the sound of singing that I hear."

32:19 When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain.

32:20 And he took the calf they had made and burned it in the fire; then he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it.

32:21 He said to Aaron, "What did these people do to you, that you led them into such great sin?"

32:22 "Do not be angry, my lord," Aaron answered. "You know how prone these people are to evil.

32:23 They said to me, 'Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him.'

32:24 So I told them, 'Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.' Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!"

32:25 Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock to their enemies.

32:26 So he stood at the entrance to the camp and said, "Whoever is for the LORD, come to me." And all the Levites rallied to him.

32:27 Then he said to them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.'"

32:28 The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died.

32:29 Then Moses said, "You have been set apart to the LORD today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day."

32:30 The next day Moses said to the people, "You have committed a great sin. But now I will go up to the LORD; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin."

32:31 So Moses went back to the LORD and said, "Oh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made themselves gods of gold.

32:32 But now, please forgive their sin--but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written."

32:33 The LORD replied to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book.

32:34 Now go, lead the people to the place I spoke of, and my angel will go before you. However, when the time comes for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin."

32:35 And the LORD struck the people with a plague because of what they did with the calf Aaron had made.

John 11.

11:1 Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

11:2 This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair.

11:3 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, "Lord, the one you love is sick."

11:4 When he heard this, Jesus said, "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it."

11:5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

11:6 Yet when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days.

11:7 Then he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea."

11:8 "But Rabbi," they said, "a short while ago the Jews tried to stone you, and yet you are going back there?"

11:9 Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world's light.

11:10 It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light."

11:11 After he had said this, he went on to tell them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up."

11:12 His disciples replied, "Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better."

11:13 Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep.

11:14 So then he told them plainly, "Lazarus is dead,

11:15 and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him."

11:16 Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."

11:17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.

11:18 Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,

11:19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.

11:20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.

11:21 "Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

11:22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask."

11:23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."

11:24 Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."

11:25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

11:26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

11:27 "Yes, Lord," she told him, "I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world."

11:28 And after she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. "The Teacher is here," she said, "and is asking for you."

11:29 When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.

11:30 Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.

11:31 When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.

11:32 When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."

11:33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.

11:34 "Where have you laid him?" he asked. "Come and see, Lord," they replied.

11:35 Jesus wept.

11:36 Then the Jews said, "See how he loved him!"

11:37 But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?"

11:38 Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.

11:39 "Take away the stone," he said. "But, Lord," said Martha, the sister of the dead man, "by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days."

11:40 Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"

11:41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me.

11:42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me."

11:43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"

11:44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go."

11:45 Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, put their faith in him.

11:46 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

11:47 Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What are we accomplishing?" they asked. "Here is this man performing many miraculous signs.

11:48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."

11:49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, "You know nothing at all!

11:50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish."

11:51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation,

11:52 and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.

11:53 So from that day on they plotted to take his life.

11:54 Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the Jews. Instead he withdrew to a region near the desert, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples.

11:55 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing before the Passover.

11:56 They kept looking for Jesus, and as they stood in the temple area they asked one another, "What do you think? Isn't he coming to the Feast at all?"

11:57 But the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that if anyone found out where Jesus was, he should report it so that they might arrest him.

Proverbs 8.

8:1 Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice?

8:2 On the heights along the way, where the paths meet, she takes her stand;

8:3 beside the gates leading into the city, at the entrances, she cries aloud:

8:4 "To you, O men, I call out; I raise my voice to all mankind.

8:5 You who are simple, gain prudence; you who are foolish, gain understanding.

8:6 Listen, for I have worthy things to say; I open my lips to speak what is right.

8:7 My mouth speaks what is true, for my lips detest wickedness.

8:8 All the words of my mouth are just; none of them is crooked or perverse.

8:9 To the discerning all of them are right; they are faultless to those who have knowledge.

8:10 Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold,

8:11 for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.

8:12 "I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess knowledge and discretion.

8:13 To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.

8:14 Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have understanding and power.

8:15 By me kings reign and rulers make laws that are just;

8:16 by me princes govern, and all nobles who rule on earth.

8:17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me.

8:18 With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity.

8:19 My fruit is better than fine gold; what I yield surpasses choice silver.

8:20 I walk in the way of righteousness, along the paths of justice,

8:21 bestowing wealth on those who love me and making their treasuries full.

8:22 "The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old;

8:23 I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began.

8:24 When there were no oceans, I was given birth, when there were no springs abounding with water;

8:25 before the mountains were settled in place, before the hills, I was given birth,

8:26 before he made the earth or its fields or any of the dust of the world.

8:27 I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,

8:28 when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,

8:29 when he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command, and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.

8:30 Then I was the craftsman at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence,

8:31 rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind.

8:32 "Now then, my sons, listen to me; blessed are those who keep my ways.

8:33 Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not ignore it.

8:34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway.

8:35 For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the LORD.

8:36 But whoever fails to find me harms himself; all who hate me love death."

Ephesians 1.

1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus:

1:2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

1:4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love

1:5 he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will--

1:6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.

1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace

1:8 that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.

1:9 And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ,

1:10 to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment--to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.

1:11 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will,

1:12 in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.

1:13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,

1:14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory.

1:15 For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,

1:16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.

1:17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

1:18 I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,

1:19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength,

1:20 which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,

1:21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

1:22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,

1:23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
