출애굽기 6 장.

출6:1 여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 내가 바로에게 하는 일을 네가 보리라 강한 손으로 말미암아 바로가 그들을 보내리라 강한 손으로 말미암아 바로가 그들을 그의 땅에서 쫓아내리라

출6:2 하나님이 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 나는 여호와이니라

출6:3 내가 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 전능의 하나님으로 나타났으나 나의 이름을 여호와로는 그들에게 알리지 아니하였고

출6:4 가나안 땅 곧 그들이 거류하는 땅을 그들에게 주기로 그들과 언약하였더니

출6:5 이제 애굽 사람이 종으로 삼은 이스라엘 자손의 신음 소리를 내가 듣고 나의 언약을 기억하노라

출6:6 그러므로 이스라엘 자손에게 말하기를 나는 여호와라 내가 애굽 사람의 무거운 짐 밑에서 너희를 빼내며 그들의 노역에서 너희를 건지며 편 팔과 여러 큰 심판들로써 너희를 속량하여

출6:7 너희를 내 백성으로 삼고 나는 너희의 하나님이 되리니 나는 애굽 사람의 무거운 짐 밑에서 너희를 빼낸 너희의 하나님 여호와인 줄 너희가 알지라

출6:8 내가 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 주기로 맹세한 땅으로 너희를 인도하고 그 땅을 너희에게 주어 기업을 삼게 하리라 나는 여호와라 하셨다 하라

출6:9 모세가 이와 같이 이스라엘 자손에게 전하나 그들이 마음의 상함과 가혹한 노역으로 말미암아 모세의 말을 듣지 아니하였더라

출6:10 여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되

출6:11 들어가서 애굽 왕 바로에게 말하여 이스라엘 자손을 그 땅에서 내보내게 하라

출6:12 모세가 여호와 앞에 아뢰어 이르되 이스라엘 자손도 내 말을 듣지 아니하였거든 바로가 어찌 들으리이까 나는 입이 둔한 자니이다

출6:13 여호와께서 모세와 아론에게 말씀하사 그들로 이스라엘 자손과 애굽 왕 바로에게 명령을 전하고 이스라엘 자손을 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 내게 하시니라

출6:14 그들의 조상을 따라 집의 어른은 이러하니라 이스라엘의 장자 르우벤의 아들은 하녹과 발루와 헤스론과 갈미니 이들은 르우벤의 족장이요

출6:15 시므온의 아들들은 여무엘과 야민과 오핫과 야긴과 소할과 가나안 여인의 아들 사울이니 이들은 시므온의 가족이요

출6:16 레위의 아들들의 이름은 그들의 족보대로 이러하니 게르손과 고핫과 므라리요 레위의 나이는 백삽십칠 세였으며

출6:17 게르손의 아들들은 그들의 가족대로 립니와 시므이요

출6:18 고핫의 아들들은 아므람과 이스할과 헤브론과 웃시엘이요 고핫의 나이는 백삼십삼 세였으며

출6:19 므라리의 아들들은 마흘리와 무시니 이들은 그들의 족보대로 레위의 족장이요

출6:20 아므람은 로들의 아버지의 누이 요게벳을 아내로 맞이하였고 그는 아론과 모세를 낳았으며 아므람의 나이는 백삼십칠 세였으며

출6:21 이스할의 아들들은 고라와 네벡과 시그리요

출6:22 웃시엘의 아들들은 미사엘과 엘사반과 시드리요

출6:23 아론은 암미나답의 딸 나손의 누이 엘리세바를 아내로 맞이하였고 그는 나답과 아비후와 엘르아살과 이다말을 낳았으며

출6:24 고라의 아들들은 앗실과 엘가나와 아비아삽이니 이들은 고라 사람의 족장이요

출6:25 아론의 아들 엘르아살은 부디엘의 딸 중에서 아내를 맞이하였고 그는 비느하스를 낳았으니 이들은 레위 사람의 조상을 따라 가족의 어른들이라

출6:26 이스라엘 자손을 그들의 군대대로 애굽 땅에서 인도하라 하신 여호와의 명령을 받은 자는 이 아론과 모세요

출6:27 애굽 왕 바로에게 이스라엘 자손을 애굽에서 내보내라 말한 사람도 이 모세와 아론이었더라

출6:28 여호와에서 애굽 땅에서 모세에게 말씀하시던 날에

출6:29 여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 나는 여호와라 내가 네게 이르는 바를 너는 애굽 왕 바로에게 다 말하라

출6:30 모세가 여호와 앞에서 아뢰되 나는 입이 둔한 자이오니 바로가 어찌 나의 말을 들으리이까

누가복음 9 장.

눅9:1 예수께서 열두 제자를 불러 모으사 모든 귀신을 제어하며 병을 고치는 능력과 권위를 주시고

눅9:2 하나님의 나라를 전파하며 앓는 자를 고치게 하려고 내보내시며

눅9:3 이르시되 여행을 위하여 아무 것도 가지지 말라 지팡이나 배낭이나 양식이나 돈이나 두 벌 옷을 가지지 말며

눅9:4 어느 집에 들어가든지 거기서 머물다가 거기서 떠나라

눅9:5 누구든지 너희를 영접하지 아니하거든 그 성에서 떠날 때에 너희 발에서 먼지를 떨어 버려 그들에게 증거를 삼으라 하시니

눅9:6 제자들이 나가 각 마을에 두루 다니며 곳곳에 복음을 전하며 병을 고치더라

눅9:7 분봉왕 헤롯이 이 모든 일을 듣고 심히 당황하여 하니 이는 어떤 사람은 요한이 죽은 자 가운데서 살아났다고도 하며

눅9:8 어떤 사람은 엘리야가 나타났다고도 하며 어떤 사람은 옛 선지자 한 사람이 다시 살아났다고도 함이라

눅9:9 헤롯이 이르되 요한은 내가 목을 베었거늘 이제 이런 일이 들리니 이 사람이 누군가 하며 그를 보고자 하더라

눅9:10 사도들이 돌아와 자기들이 행한 모든 것을 예수께 여쭈니 데리시고 따로 벳새다라는 고을로 떠나 가셨으나

눅9:11 무리가 알고 따라왔거늘 예수께서 그들을 영접하사 하나님 나라의 일을 이야기하시며 병 고칠 자들은 고치시더라

눅9:12 날이 저물어 가매 열두 사도가 나아와 여짜오되 무리를 보내어 두루 마을과 촌으로 가서 유하며 먹을 것을 얻게 하소서 우리가 있는 여기는 빈 들이니이다

눅9:13 예수께서 이르시되 너희가 먹을 것을 주라 하시니 여짜오되 우리에게 떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리 밖에 없으니 이 모든 사람을 위하여 먹을 것을 사지 아니하고서는 할 수 없사옵나이다 하니

눅9:14 이는 남자가 한 오천 명 됨이러라 제자들에게 이르시되 떼를 지어 한 오십 명씩 앉히라 하시니

눅9:15 제자들이 이렇게 하여 다 앉힌 후

눅9:16 예수께서 떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 가지사 하늘을 우러러 축사하시고 떼어 제자들에게 주어 무리 앞에 놓게 하시니

눅9:17 먹고 다 배불렀더라 그 남은 조각을 열두 바구니를 거두니라

눅9:18 예수께서 따로 기도하실 때에 제자들이 주와 함께 있더니 물어 이르시되 무리가 나를 누구라고 하느냐

눅9:19 대답하여 이르되 세례 요한이라 하고 더러는 엘리야라, 더러는 옛 선지자 중의 한 사람이 살아났다 하나이다

눅9:20 예수께서 이르시되 너희는 나를 누구라 하느냐 베드로가 대답하여 이르되 하나님의 그리스도시니이다 하니

눅9:21 경고하사 이 말을 아무에게도 이르지 말라 명하시고

눅9:22 이르시되 인자가 많은 고난을 받고 장로들과 대제사장들과 서기관들에게 버린 바 되어 죽임을 당하고 제삼일에 살아나야 하리라 하시고

눅9:23 또 무리에게 이르시되 아무든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 날마다 제 십자가를 지고 나를 따를 것이니라

눅9:24 누구든지 제 목숨을 구원하고자 하면 잃을 것이요 누구든지 나를 위하여 제 목숨을 잃으면 구원하리라

눅9:25 사람이 만일 온 천하를 얻고도 자기를 잃든지 빼앗기든지 하면 무엇이 유익하리요

눅9:26 누구든지 나와 내 말을 부끄러워하면 인자도 자기와 아버지와 거룩한 천사들의 영광으로 올 때에 그 사람을 부끄러워하리라

눅9:27 내가 참으로 너희에게 이르노니 여기 서 있는 사람 중에 죽기 전에 하나님의 나라를 볼 자들도 있느니라

눅9:28 이 말씀을 하신 후 팔 일쯤 되어 예수께서 베드로와 요한과 야고보를 데리고 기도하시러 산에 올라가사

눅9:29 기도하실 때에 용모가 변화되고 그 옷이 희어져 광채가 나더라

눅9:30 문득 두 사람이 예수와 함께 말하니 이는 모세와 엘리야라

눅9:31 영광 중에 나타나서 장차 예수께서 예루살렘에서 별세하실 것을 말할새

눅9:32 베드로와 및 함께 있는 자들이 깊이 졸다가 온전히 깨어나 예수의 영광과 및 함께 선 두 사람을 보더니

눅9:33 두 사람이 떠날 때에 베드로가 예수께 여짜오되 주여 우리가 여기 있는 것이 좋사오니 우리가 초막 셋을 짓되 하나는 주를 위하여, 하나는 모세를 위하여, 하나는 엘리야를 위하여 하사이다 하되 자기가 하는 말을 자기도 알지 못하더라

눅9:34 이 말 할 즈음에 구름이 와서 그들을 덮는지라 구름 속으로 들어갈 때에 그들이 무서워하더니

눅9:35 구름 속에서 소리가 나서 이르되 이는 나의 아들 곧 택함을 받은 자니 너희는 그의 말을 들으라 하고

눅9:36 소리가 그치매 오직 예수만 보이더라 제자들이 잠잠하여 그 본 것을 무엇이든지 그 때에는 아무에게도 이르지 아니하니라

눅9:37 이튿날 산에서 내려오시니 큰 무리가 맞을새

눅9:38 무리 중의 한 사람이 소리 질러 이르되 선생님 청컨대 내 아들을 돌보아 주옵소서 이는 내 외아들이니이다

눅9:39 귀신이 그를 잡아 갑자기 부르짖게 하고 경련을 일으켜 거품을 흘리게 하며 몹시 상하게 하고야 겨우 떠나가나이다

눅9:40 당신의 제자들에게 내쫓아 주기를 구하였으나 그들이 능히 못하더이다

눅9:41 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 믿음이 없고 패역한 세대여 내가 얼마나 너희와 함께 있으며 너희에게 참으리요 네 아들을 이리로 데리고 오라 하시니

눅9:42 올 때에 귀신이 거꾸러뜨리고 심한 경련을 일으키게 하는지라 예수께서 더러운 귀신을 꾸짖으시고 아이를 낫게 하사 그 아버지에게 도로 주시니

눅9:43 사람들이 다 하나님의 위엄에 놀라니라 그들이 다 그 행하시는 모든 일을 놀랍게 여길새 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되

눅9:44 이 말을 너희 귀에 담아 두라 인자가 장차 사람들의 손에 넘겨지리라 하시되

눅9:45 그들이 이 말씀을 알지 못하니 이는 그들로 깨닫지 못하게 숨긴 바 되었음이라 또 그들은 이 말씀을 묻기도 두려워하더라

눅9:46 제자 중에서 누가 크냐 하는 변론이 일어나니

눅9:47 예수께서 그 마음에 변론하는 것을 아시고 어린 아아 하나를 데려다가 자기 곁에 세우시고

눅9:48 그들에게 이르시되 누구든지 내 이름으로 이런 어린 아이를 영접하면 곧 나를 영접함이요 또 누구든지 나를 영접하면 곧 나를 보내신 이를 영접함이라 너희 모든 사람 중에 가장 작은 그가 큰 자니라

눅9:49 요한이 여짜오되 주여 어떤 사람이 주의 이름으로 귀신을 내쫓는 것을 우리가 보고 우리와 함께 따르지 아니하므로 금하였나이다

눅9:50 예수께서 이르시되 금하지 말라 너희를 반대하지 않는 자는 너희를 위하는 자니라 하시니라

눅9:51 예수께서 승천하실 기약이 차가매 예루살렘을 향하여 올라가기로 굳게 결심하시고

눅9:52 사자들을 앞서 보내시매 그들이 가서 예수를 위하여 준비하려고 사마리아인의 한 마을에 들어갔더니

눅9:53 예수께서 예루살렘을 향하여 가시기 때문에 그들이 받아들이지 아니하는지라

눅9:54 제자 야고보와 요한이 이를 보고 이르되 주여 우리가 불을 명하여 하늘로 부터 내려 저들을 멸하라 하기를 원하시나이까

눅9:55 예수께서 돌아보시며 꾸짖으시고

눅9:56 함께 다른 마을으로 가시니라

눅9:57 길 가실 때에 어떤 사람이 여짜오되 어디로 가시든지 나는 따르리이다

눅9:58 예수께서 이르시되 여우도 굴이 있고 공중의 새도 집이 있으되 인자는 머리 둘 곳이 없도다 하시고

눅9:59 또 다른 사람에게 나를 따르라 하시니 그가 이르되 나로 먼저 가서 내 아버지를 장사하게 허락하옵소서

눅9:60 이르시되 죽은 자들로 자기의 죽은 자들을 장사하게 하고 너는 가서 하나님의 나라를 전파하라 하시고

눅9:61 또 다른 사람이 이르되 주여 내가 주를 따르겠나이다마는 나로 먼저 내 가족을 작별하게 허락하소서

눅9:62 예수께서 이르시되 손에 쟁기를 잡고 뒤를 돌아보는 자는 하나님의 나라에 합당하지 아니하니라 하시니라

욥기 23 장.

욥23:1 욥이 대답하여 이르되

욥23:2 오늘도 내게 반항하는 마음과 근심이 있나니 내가 받는 재앙이 탄식보다 무거움이라

욥23:3 내가 어찌하면 하나님을 발견하고 그의 처소에 나아가랴

욥23:4 어찌하면 그 앞에서 내가 호소하며 변론할 말을 내 입에 채우고

욥23:5 내게 대답하시는 말씀을 내가 알며 내게 이르시는 것을 내가 깨달으랴

욥23:6 그가 큰 권능을 가지시고 나와 더불어 다투시겠느냐 아니로다 도리어 내 말을 들으시리라

욥23:7 거기서는 정직한 자가 그와 변론할 수 있은즉 내가 심판자에게서 영원히 벗어나리라

욥23:8 그런데 내가 앞으로 가도 그가 아니 계시고 뒤로 가도 보이지 아니하며

욥23:9 그가 왼쪽에서 일하시나 내가 만날 수 없고 그가 오른쪽으로 돌이키시나 뵈올 수 없구나

욥23:10 그러나 내가 가는 길을 그가 아시나니 그가 나를 단련하신 후에는 내가 순금 같이 되어 나오리라

욥23:11 내 발이 그의 걸음을 바로 따랐으며 내가 그의 길을 지켜 치우치지 아니하였고

욥23:12 내가 그의 입술의 명령을 어기지 아니하고 정한 음식보다 그의 입의 말씀을 귀히 여겼도다

욥23:13 그는 뜻이 일정하시니 누가 능히 돌이키랴 그의 마음에 하고자 하시는 것이면 그것을 행하시나니

욥23:14 그런즉 내게 작성하신 것을 이루실 것이라 이런 일이 그에게 많이 있느니라

욥23:15 그러므로 내가 그 앞에서 떨며 지각을 얻어 그를 두려워하리라

욥23:16 하나님이 나의 마음을 약하게 하시며 전능자가 나를 두렵게 하셨나니

욥23:17 이는 내가 두려워하는 것이 어둠 때문이나 흑암이 내 얼굴을 가렸기 때문이 아니로다

고린도전서 10 장.

고전10:1 형제들아 나는 너희가 알지 못하기를 원하지 아니하노니 우리 조상들이 다 구름 아래에 있고 바다 가운데로 지나며

고전10:2 모세에게 속하여 다 구름과 바다에서 세례를 받고

고전10:3 모두가 같은 신령한 음식을 먹으며

고전10:4 모두가 같은 신령한 음료를 뒤따르는 신령한 반석으로부터 마셨으니 그 반석은 곧 그리스도시라

고전10:5 그러나 그들의 다수를 하나님이 기뻐하지 아니하셨으므로 그들이 광야에서 멸망을 받았느니라

고전10:6 이러한 일은 우리들의 본보기가 되어 우리로 하여금 그들이 악을 즐겨한 것 같이 즐겨하는 자가 되지 않게 하려 함이니

고전10:7 그들 가운데 어떤 사람들과 같이 너희는 우상 숭배하는 자가 되지 말라 기록된 바 백성이 앉아서 먹고 마시며 일어나서 뛰논다 함과 같으니라

고전10:8 그들 중의 어떤 사람들이 음행하다가 하루에 이만 삼천 명이 죽었나니 우리는 그들과 같이 음행하지 말자

고전10:9 그들 가운데 어떤 사람들이 주를 시험하다가 뱀에게 멸망하였나니 우리는 그들과 같이 시험하지 말자

고전10:10 그들 가운데 어떤 사람들이 원망하다가 멸망시키는 자에게 멸망하였나니 너희는 그들과 같이 원망하지 말라

고전10:11 그들에게 일어난 이런 일은 본보기가 되고 또한 말세를 만난 우리를 깨우치기 위하여 기록되었느니라

고전10:12 그런즉 선 줄로 생각하는 자는 넘어질까 조심하라

고전10:13 사람이 감당할 시험 밖에는 너희가 당한 것이 없나니 오직 하나님은 미쁘사 너희가 감당하지 못할 시험 당함을 허락하지 아니하시고 시험 당할 즈음에 또한 피할 길을 내사 너희로 능히 감당하게 하시느니라

고전10:14 그런즉 내 사랑하는 자들아 우상 숭배하는 일을 피하라

고전10:15 나는 지혜있는 자들에게 말함과 같이 하노니 너희는 내가 이르는 말을 스스로 판단하라

고전10:16 우리가 축복하는 바 축복의 잔은 그리스도의 피에 참여함이 아니며 우리가 떼는 떡은 그리스도의 몸에 참여함이 아니냐

고전10:17 떡이 하나요 많은 우리가 한 몸이니 이는 우리가 다 한 떡에 참여함이라

고전10:18 육신을 따라 난 이스라엘을 보라 제물을 먹는 자들이 제단에 참여하는 자들이 아니냐

고전10:19 그런즉 내가 무엇을 말하느냐 우상의 제물은 무엇이며 우상은 무엇이냐

고전10:20 무릇 이방인이 제사하는 것은 귀신에게 하는 것이요 하나님께 제사하는 것이 아니니 나는 너희가 귀신과 교제하는 자가 되기를 원하지 아니하노라

고전10:21 너희가 주의 잔과 귀신의 잔을 겸하여 마시지 못하고 주의 식탁과 귀신의 식탁에 겸하여 참여하지 못하리라

고전10:22 그러면 우리가 주를 노여워하시게 하겠느냐 우리가 주보다 강한 자냐

고전10:23 모든 것이 가하나 모든 것이 유익한 것은 아니요 모든 것이 가하나 모든 것이 덕을 세우는 것은 아니니

고전10:24 누구든지 자기의 유익을 구하지 말고 남의 유익을 구하라

고전10:25 무릇 시장에서 파는 것은 양심을 위하여 묻지 말고 먹으라

고전10:26 이는 땅과 거기 충만한 것이 주의 것임이라

고전10:27 불신자 중 누가 너희를 청할 때 너희가 가고자 하거든 너희 앞에 차려 놓은 것은 무엇이든지 양심을 위하여 묻지 말고 먹으라

고전10:28 누가 너희에게 이것이 제물이라 말하거든 알게 한 자와 그 양심을 위하여 먹지 말라

고전10:29 내가 말한 양심은 너희의 것이 아니요 남의 것이니 어찌하여 내 자유가 남의 양심으로 말미암아 판단을 받으리요

고전10:30 만일 내가 감사함으로 참여하면 어찌하여 내가 감사하는 것에 대하여 비방을 받으리요

고전10:31 그런즉 너희가 먹든지 마시든지 무엇을 하든지 다 하나님의 영광을 위하여 하라

고전10:32 유대인에게나 헬라인에게나 하나님의 교회에나 거치는 자가 되지 말고

고전10:33 나와 같이 모든 일에 모든 사람을 기쁘게 하여 자신의 유익을 구하지 아니하고 많은 사람의 유익을 구하여 그들로 구원을 받게 하라

Exodus 6.

6:1 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: Because of my mighty hand he will let them go; because of my mighty hand he will drive them out of his country."

6:2 God also said to Moses, "I am the LORD.

6:3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them.

6:4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they lived as aliens.

6:5 Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.

6:6 "Therefore, say to the Israelites: 'I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.

6:7 I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.

6:8 And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the LORD.'"

6:9 Moses reported this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and cruel bondage.

6:10 Then the LORD said to Moses,

6:11 "Go, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the Israelites go out of his country."

6:12 But Moses said to the LORD, "If the Israelites will not listen to me, why would Pharaoh listen to me, since I speak with faltering lips?"

6:13 Now the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron about the Israelites and Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he commanded them to bring the Israelites out of Egypt.

6:14 These were the heads of their families: The sons of Reuben the firstborn son of Israel were Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi. These were the clans of Reuben.

6:15 The sons of Simeon were Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman. These were the clans of Simeon.

6:16 These were the names of the sons of Levi according to their records: Gershon, Kohath and Merari. Levi lived 137 years.

6:17 The sons of Gershon, by clans, were Libni and Shimei.

6:18 The sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. Kohath lived 133 years.

6:19 The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. These were the clans of Levi according to their records.

6:20 Amram married his father's sister Jochebed, who bore him Aaron and Moses. Amram lived 137 years.

6:21 The sons of Izhar were Korah, Nepheg and Zicri.

6:22 The sons of Uzziel were Mishael, Elzaphan and Sithri.

6:23 Aaron married Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab and sister of Nahshon, and she bore him Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

6:24 The sons of Korah were Assir, Elkanah and Abiasaph. These were the Korahite clans.

6:25 Eleazar son of Aaron married one of the daughters of Putiel, and she bore him Phinehas. These were the heads of the Levite families, clan by clan.

6:26 It was this same Aaron and Moses to whom the LORD said, "Bring the Israelites out of Egypt by their divisions."

6:27 They were the ones who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt about bringing the Israelites out of Egypt. It was the same Moses and Aaron.

6:28 Now when the LORD spoke to Moses in Egypt,

6:29 he said to him, "I am the LORD. Tell Pharaoh king of Egypt everything I tell you."

6:30 But Moses said to the LORD, "Since I speak with faltering lips, why would Pharaoh listen to me?"

Luke 9.

9:1 When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases,

9:2 and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

9:3 He told them: "Take nothing for the journey--no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic.

9:4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town.

9:5 If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony against them."

9:6 So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere.

9:7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed, because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead,

9:8 others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.

9:9 But Herod said, "I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?" And he tried to see him.

9:10 When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,

9:11 but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.

9:12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, "Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here."

9:13 He replied, "You give them something to eat." They answered, "We have only five loaves of bread and two fish--unless we go and buy food for all this crowd."

9:14 (About five thousand men were there.) But he said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each."

9:15 The disciples did so, and everybody sat down.

9:16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to set before the people.

9:17 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

9:18 Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?"

9:19 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life."

9:20 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "The Christ of God."

9:21 Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.

9:22 And he said, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life."

9:23 Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

9:24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.

9:25 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?

9:26 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

9:27 I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God."

9:28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.

9:29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.

9:30 Two men, Moses and Elijah,

9:31 appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.

9:32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.

9:33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." (He did not know what he was saying.)

9:34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.

9:35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him."

9:36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves, and told no one at that time what they had seen.

9:37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him.

9:38 A man in the crowd called out, "Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child.

9:39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him.

9:40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not."

9:41 "O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here."

9:42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the evil spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father.

9:43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples,

9:44 "Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men."

9:45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

9:46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.

9:47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him.

9:48 Then he said to them, "Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For he who is least among you all--he is the greatest."

9:49 "Master," said John, "we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us."

9:50 "Do not stop him," Jesus said, "for whoever is not against you is for you."

9:51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

9:52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him;

9:53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem.

9:54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?"

9:55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them,

9:56 and they went to another village.

9:57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go."

9:58 Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."

9:59 He said to another man, "Follow me." But the man replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."

9:60 Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."

9:61 Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good-by to my family."

9:62 Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."

Job 23.

23:1 Then Job replied:

23:2 "Even today my complaint is bitter; his hand is heavy in spite of my groaning.

23:3 If only I knew where to find him; if only I could go to his dwelling!

23:4 I would state my case before him and fill my mouth with arguments.

23:5 I would find out what he would answer me, and consider what he would say.

23:6 Would he oppose me with great power? No, he would not press charges against me.

23:7 There an upright man could present his case before him, and I would be delivered forever from my judge.

23:8 "But if I go to the east, he is not there; if I go to the west, I do not find him.

23:9 When he is at work in the north, I do not see him; when he turns to the south, I catch no glimpse of him.

23:10 But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.

23:11 My feet have closely followed his steps; I have kept to his way without turning aside.

23:12 I have not departed from the commands of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.

23:13 "But he stands alone, and who can oppose him? He does whatever he pleases.

23:14 He carries out his decree against me, and many such plans he still has in store.

23:15 That is why I am terrified before him; when I think of all this, I fear him.

23:16 God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me.

23:17 Yet I am not silenced by the darkness, by the thick darkness that covers my face.

1 Corinthians 10.

10:1 For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea.

10:2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

10:3 They all ate the same spiritual food

10:4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.

10:5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert.

10:6 Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.

10:7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: "The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in pagan revelry."

10:8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did--and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.

10:9 We should not test the Lord, as some of them did--and were killed by snakes.

10:10 And do not grumble, as some of them did--and were killed by the destroying angel.

10:11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.

10:12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!

10:13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

10:14 Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.

10:15 I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.

10:16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?

10:17 Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.

10:18 Consider the people of Israel: Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?

10:19 Do I mean then that a sacrifice offered to an idol is anything, or that an idol is anything?

10:20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons.

10:21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the table of demons.

10:22 Are we trying to arouse the Lord's jealousy? Are we stronger than he?

10:23 "Everything is permissible"--but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"--but not everything is constructive.

10:24 Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.

10:25 Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience,

10:26 for, "The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it."

10:27 If some unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience.

10:28 But if anyone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, both for the sake of the man who told you and for conscience' sake--

10:29 the other man's conscience, I mean, not yours. For why should my freedom be judged by another's conscience?

10:30 If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?

10:31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

10:32 Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God--

10:33 even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. 1CO
