출애굽기 5 장.

출5:1 그 후에 모세와 아론이 바로에게 가서 이르되 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 이렇게 말씀하시기를 내 백성을 보내라 그러면 그들이 광야에서 내 앞에 절기를 지킬 것이니라 하셨나이다

출5:2 바로가 이르되 여호와가 누구이기에 내가 그의 목소리를 듣고 이스라엘을 보내겠느냐 나는 여호와를 알지 못하니 이스라엘을 보내지 아니하리라

출5:3 그들이 이르되 히브리인의 하나님이 우리에게 나타나셨은즉 우리가 광야로 사흘길쯤 가서 우리 하나님 여호와께 제사를 드리려 하오니 가도록 허락하소서 여호와께서 전염병이나 칼로 우리를 치실까 두려워하나이다

출5:4 애굽 왕이 그들에게 이르되 모세와 아론아 너희가 어찌하여 백성의 노역을 쉬게 하려느냐 가서 너희의 노역이나 하라

출5:5 바로가 또 이르되 이제 이 땅의 백성이 많아졌거늘 너희가 그들로 노역을 쉬게 하는도다 하고

출5:6 바로가 그 날에 백성의 감독들과 기록원들에게 명령하여 이르되

출5:7 너희는 백성에게 다시는 벽돌에 쓸 짚을 전과 같이 주지 말고 그들이 가서 스스로 짚을 줍게 하라

출5:8 또 그들이 전에 만든 벽돌 수효대로 그들에게 만들게 하고 감하지 말라 그들이 게으르므로 소리질러 이르기를 우리가 가서 우리 하나님께 제사를 드리자 하나니

출5:9 그 사람들의 노동을 무겁게 함으로 수고롭게 하여 그들로 거짓말을 듣지 않게 하라

출5:10 백성의 감독들과 기록원들이 나가서 백성에게 말하여 이르되 바로가 이렇게 말하기를 내가 너희에게 짚을 주지 아니하리니

출5:11 너희는 짚을 찾을 곳으로 가서 주우라 그러나 너희 일은 조금도 감하지 아니하리라 하셨느니라

출5:12 백성이 애굽 온 땅에 흩어져 곡초 그루터기를 거두어다가 짚을 대신하니

출5:13 감독들이 그들을 독촉하여 이르되 너희는 짚이 있을 때와 같이 그 날의 일을 그 날에 마치라 하며

출5:14 바로의 감독들이 자기들이 세운 바 이스라엘 자손의 기록원들을 때리며 이르되 너희가 어찌하여 어제와 오늘에 만드는 벽돌의 수효를 전과 같이 채우지 아니하였느냐 하니라

출5:15 이스라엘 자손의 기록원들이 가서 바로에게 호소하여 이르되 왕은 어찌하여 당신의 종들에게 이같이 하시나이까

출5:16 당신의 종들에게 짚을 주지 아니 하고 그들이 우리에게 벽돌을 만들라 하나이다 당신의 종들이 매를 맞사오니 이는 당신의 백성의 죄니이다

출5:17 바로가 이르되 너희가 게으르다 게으르다 그러므로 너희가 이르기를 우리가 가서 여호와께 제사를 드리자 하는도다

출5:18 이제 가서 일하라 짚은 너희에게 주지 않을지라도 벽돌은 너희가 수량대로 바칠지니라

출5:19 기록하는 일을 맡은 이스라엘 자손들이 너희가 매일 만드는 벽돌을 조금도 감하지 못하리라 함을 듣고 화가 몸에 미친 줄 알고

출5:20 그들이 바로를 떠나 나올 때에 모세와 아론이 길에 서 있는 것을 보고

출5:21 그들에게 이르되 너희가 우리를 바로의 눈과 그의 신하의 눈에 미운 것이 되게 하고 그들의 손에 칼을 주어 우리를 죽이게 하는도다 여호와는 너희를 살피시고 판단하시기를 원하노라

출5:22 모세가 여호와께 돌아와서 아뢰되 주여 어찌하여 이 백성이 학대를 당하게 하셨나이까 어찌하여 나를 보내셨나이까

출5:23 내가 바로에게 들어가서 주의 이름으로 말한 후로부터 그가 이 백성을 더 학대하며 주께서도 주의 백성을 구원하지 아니하시나이다

누가복음 8 장.

눅8:1 그 후에 예수께서 각 성과 마을에 두루 다니시며 하나님의 나라를 선포하시며 그 복음을 전하실새 열두 제자가 함께 하였고

눅8:2 또한 악귀를 쫓아내심과 병 고침을 받은 어떤 여자들 곧 일곱 귀신이 나간 자 막달라인이라 하는 마리아와

눅8:3 헤롯의 청지기 구사의 아내 요안나와 수산나와 다른 여러 여자가 함께하여 자기들의 소유로 그들을 섬기더라

눅8:4 각 동네 사람들이 예수께로 나아와 큰 무리를 이루니 예수께서 비유로 말씀하시되

눅8:5 씨를 뿌리는 자가 그 씨를 뿌리러 나가서 뿌릴새 더러는 길가에 떨어지매 밟히며 공중의 새들이 먹어버렸고

눅8:6 더러는 바위 위에 떨어지매 났다가 습기가 없으므로 말랐고

눅8:7 더러는 가시떨기 속에 떨어지매 가시가 함께 자라서 기운을 막았고

눅8:8 더러는 좋은 땅에 떨어지매 나서 백 배의 결실을 하였느니라 이 말씀을 하시고 외치시되 들을 귀 있는 자는 들을지어다

눅8:9 제자들이 이 비유의 뜻을 물으니

눅8:10 이르시되 하나님 나라의 비밀을 아는 것이 너희에게는 허락되었으나 다른 사람에게는 비유로 하나니 이는 그들로 보아도 보지 못하고 들어도 깨닫지 못하게 하려 함이라

눅8:11 이 비유는 이러하니라 씨는 하나님의 말씀이요

눅8:12 길가에 있다는 것은 말씀을 들은 자니 이에 마귀가 가서 그들이 믿어 구원을 얻지 못하게 하려고 말씀을 그 마음에서 빼앗는 것이요

눅8:13 바위 위에 있다는 것은 말씀을 들을 때에 기쁨으로 받으나 뿌리가 없어 잠깐 믿다가 시련을 당할 때에 배반하는 자요

눅8:14 가시떨기에 떨어졌다는 것은 말씀을 들은 자이나 지내는 중 이생의 염려와 재물과 향락에 기운이 막혀 온전히 결실치 못하는 자요

눅8:15 좋은 땅에 있다는 것은 착하고 좋은 마음으로 말씀을 듣고 지키어 인내로 결실하는 자니라

눅8:16 누구든지 등불을 켜서 그릇으로 덮거나 평상 아래에 두지 아니하고 등경 위에 두나니 이는 들어가는 자들로 그 빛을 보게 하려 함이라

눅8:17 숨은 것이 장차 드러나지 아니 할 것이 없고 감추인 것이 장차 알려지고 나타나지 않을 것이 없느니라

눅8:18 그러므로 너희가 어떻게 들을까 스스로 삼가라 누구든지 있는 자는 받겠고 없는 자는 그 있는 줄로 아는 것까지도 빼앗기리라 하시니라

눅8:19 예수의 어머니와 그 동생들이 왔으나 무리로 인하여 가까이 하지 못하니

눅8:20 어떤 이가 알리되 당신의 어머니와 동생들이 당신을 보려고 밖에 서있나이다

눅8:21 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 내 어머니와 내 동생들은 곧 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 행하는 이 사람들이라 하시니라

눅8:22 하루는 제자들과 함께 배에 오르사 그들에게 이르시되 호수 저편으로 건너가자 하시매 이에 떠나

눅8:23 행선할 때에 예수께서 잠이 드셨더니 마침 광풍이 호수로 내리치매 배에 물이 가득하게 되어 위태한지라

눅8:24 제자들이 나아와 깨워 이르되 주여 주여 우리가 죽겠나이다 한대 예수께서 잠을 깨사 바람과 물결을 꾸짖으시니 이에 그쳐 잔잔하여지더라

눅8:25 제자들에게 이르시되 너희 믿음이 어디 있느냐 하시니 그들이 두려워하고 놀랍게 여겨 서로 말하되 그가 누구이기에 바람과 물을 명하매 순종하는가 하더라

눅8:26 그들이 갈릴리 맞은편 거라사인의 땅에 이르러

눅8:27 예수께서 육지에 내리시매 그 도시 사람으로서 귀신들린 자 하나가 예수를 만나니 그 사람은 오래 옷을 입지 아니하며 집에 거하지도 아니하고 무덤 사이에 거하는 자라

눅8:28 예수를 보고 부르짖으며 그 앞에 엎드려 큰 소리로 불러 이르되 지극히 높으신 하나님의 아들 예수여 당신이 나와 무슨 상관이 있나이까 당신께 구하노니 나를 괴롭게 하지 마옵소서 하니

눅8:29 이는 예수께서 이미 더러운 귀신을 명하사 이 사람에게서 나오라 하셨음이라 (귀신이 가끔 그 사람을 붙잡으므로 그를 쇠사슬과 고랑에 매어 지켰으되 그 맨 것을 끊고 귀신에게 몰려 광야로 나갔더라)

눅8:30 예수께서 네 이름이 무엇이냐 물으신즉 이르되 군대라 하니 이는 많은 귀신이 들렸음이라

눅8:31 무저갱으로 들어가라 하지 마시기를 간구하더니

눅8:32 마침 그 곳에 많은 돼지 떼가 산에서 먹고 있는지라 귀신들이 그 돼지에게로 들어가게 허락하심을 간구하니 이에 허락하시니

눅8:33 귀신들이 그 사람에게서 나와 돼지에게로 들어가니 그 떼가 비탈로 내리달아 호수에 들어가 몰사하거늘

눅8:34 치던 자들이 그 이루어진 일을 보고 도망하여 성내와 마을에 알리니

눅8:35 사람들이 그 이루어진 일을 보러 나와서 예수께 이르러 귀신 나간 사람이 옷을 입고 정신이 온전하여 예수의 발치에 앉아 있는 것을 보고 두려워하거늘

눅8:36 귀신들렸던 자가 어떻게 구원 받았는지를 본 자들이 그들에게 이르매

눅8:37 거라사인의 땅 근방 모든 백성이 크게 두려워하여 예수께 떠나가시기를 구하더라 예수께서 배에 올라 돌아가실새

눅8:38 귀신 나간 사람이 함께 있기를 구하였으나 예수께서 그를 보내시며 이르시되

눅8:39 집으로 돌아가 하나님이 네게 어떻게 큰 일을 행하셨는지를 말하라 하시니 그가 가서 예수께서 자기에게 어떻게 큰 일을 행하셨는지를 온 성내에 전파하니라

눅8:40 예수께서 돌아오시매 무리가 환영하니 이는 다 기다렸음이러라

눅8:41 이에 회당장인 야이로라 하는 사람이 와서 예수의 발 아래에 엎드려 자기 집에 오시기를 간구하니

눅8:42 이는 자기에게 열두 살 된 외딸이 있어 죽어감이러라 예수께서 가실 때에 무리가 밀려들더라

눅8:43 이에 열두 해를 혈루증으로 앓는 중에 아무에게도 고침을 받지 못하던 여자가

눅8:44 예수의 뒤로 와서 그 옷 가에 손을 대니 혈루증이 즉시 그쳤더라

눅8:45 예수께서 이르시되 내게 손을 댄 자가 누구냐 하시니 다 아니라 할 때에 베드로가 이르되 주여 무리가 밀려들어 미나이다

눅8:46 예수께서 이르시되 내게 손을 댄 자가 있도다 이는 내게서 능력이 나간 줄 앎이로다 하신대

눅8:47 여자가 스스로 숨기지 못할 줄 알고 떨며 나아와 엎드리어 그 손 댄 이유와 곧 나은 것을 모든 사람 앞에서 말하니

눅8:48 예수께서 이르시되 딸아 네 믿음이 너를 구원하였으니 평안히 가라 하시더라

눅8:49 아직 말씀하실 때에 회당장의 집에서 사람이 와서 말하되 당신의 딸이 죽었나이다 선생을 더 괴롭게 하지 마소서 하거늘

눅8:50 예수께서 들으시고 이르시되 두려워하지 말고 믿기만 하라 그리하면 딸이 구원을 얻으리라 하시고

눅8:51 그 집에 이르러 베드로와 요한과 야고보와 아이의 부모 외에는 함께 들어가기를 허락하지 아니하시니라

눅8:52 모든 사람이 아이를 위하여 울며 통곡하매 예수께서 이르시되 울지 말라 죽은 것이 아니라 잔다 하시니

눅8:53 그들이 그 죽은 것을 아는 고로 비웃더라

눅8:54 예수께서 아이의 손을 잡고 불러 이르시되 아이야 일어나라 하시니

눅8:55 그 영이 돌아와 아이가 곧 일어나거늘 예수께서 먹을 것을 주라 명하시니

눅8:56 그 부모가 놀라는지라 예수께서 경고하사 이 일을 아무에게도 말하지 말라 하시니라

욥기 22 장.

욥22:1 데만 사람 엘리바스가 대답하여 이르되

욥22:2 사람이 어찌 하나님께 유익하게 하겠느냐 지혜로운 자도 자기에게 유익할 따름이니라

욥22:3 네가 의로운들 전능자에게 무슨 기쁨이 있겠으며 네 행위가 온전한들 그에게 이익이 되겠느냐

욥22:4 하나님이 너를 책망하시며 너를 심문하심이 너의 경건함 때문이냐

욥22:5 네 악이 크지 아니하냐 네 죄악이 끝이 없느니라

욥22:6 까닭 없이 형제를 볼모로 잡으며 헐벗은 자의 의복을 벗기며

욥22:7 목마른 자에게 물을 마시게 하지 아니하며 주린 자에게 음식을 주지 아니하였구나

욥22:8 권세 있는 자는 토지를 얻고 존귀한 자는 거기에서 사는구나

욥22:9 너는 과부를 빈손으로 돌려보내며 고아의 팔을 꺾는구나

욥22:10 그러므로 올무들이 너를 둘러있고 두려움이 갑자기 너를 엄습하며

욥22:11 어둠이 너로 하여금 보지 못하게 하고 홍수가 너를 덮느니라

욥22:12 하나님은 높은 하늘에 계시지 아니하냐 보라 우두머리 별이 얼마나 높은가

욥22:13 그러나 네 말은 하나님이 무엇을 아시며 흑암 중에서 어찌 심판하실 수 있으랴

욥22:14 빽빽한 구름이 그를 가린즉 그가 보지 못하시고 둥근 하늘을 거니실 뿐이라 하는구나

욥22:15 네가 악인이 밟던 옛적 길을 지키려느냐

욥22:16 그들을 때가 이르기 전에 끊겨 버렸고 그들의 터는 강물로 말미암아 함몰되었느니라

욥22:17 그들이 하나님께 말하기를 우리를 떠나소서 하며 또 말하기를 전능자가 우리를 위하여 무엇을 하실 수 있으랴 하였으나

욥22:18 하나님이 좋은 것으로 그들의 집에 채우셨느니라 악인의 계획은 나에게 머니라

욥22:19 의인은 보고 기뻐하고 죄 없는 자는 그들을 비웃기를

욥22:20 우리의 원수가 망하였고 그들의 남은 것을 불이 삼켰느리라 하리라

욥22:21 너는 하나님과 화목하고 평안하라 그리하면 복이 네게 임하리라

욥22:22 청하건대 너는 하나님의 입에서 교훈을 받고 하나님의 말씀을 네 마음에 두라

욥22:23 네가 만일 전능자에게로 돌아가면 네가 지음을 받을 것이며 또 네 장막에서 불의를 멀리 하리라

욥22:24 네 보화를 티끌로 여기고 오빌의 금을 계곡의 돌로 여기라

욥22:25 그리하면 전능자가 네 보화가 되시며 네게 고귀한 은이 되시리니

욥22:26 이에 네가 전능자를 기뻐하여 하나님께로 얼굴을 들 것이라

욥22:27 너는 그에게 기도하겠고 그는 들으실 것이며 너의 서원을 네가 갚으리라

욥22:28 네가 무엇을 결정하면 이루어질 것이요 네 길에 빛이 비치리라

욥22:29 사람들이 너를 낮추거든 너는 교만했노라고 말하라 하나님은 겸손한 자를 구원하시리라

욥22:30 죄 없는 자가 아니라도 건지시리니 네 손이 깨끗함으로 말미암아 건지심을 받으리라

고린도전서 9 장.

고전9:1 내가 자유인이 아니냐 사도가 아니냐 예수 우리 주를 보지 못하였느냐 주 안에서 행한 나의 일이 너희가 아니냐

고전9:2 다른 사람들에게는 내가 사도가 아닐지라도 너희에게는 사도니 나의 사도 됨을 주 안에서 인친 것이 너희라

고전9:3 나를 비판하는 자들에게 발명할 것이 이것이니

고전9:4 우리가 먹고 마실 권리가 없겠느냐

고전9:5 우리가 다른 사도들과 주의 형제들과 게바와 같이 믿음의 자매 된 아내를 데리고 다닐 권리가 없겠느냐

고전9:6 어찌 나와 바나바만 일하지 아니할 권리가 없겠느냐

고전9:7 누가 자기 비용으로 군 복무를 하겠느냐 누가 포도를 심고 그 열매를 먹지 않겠느냐 누가 양 떼를 기르고 그 양 떼의 젖을 먹지 않겠느냐

고전9:8 내가 사람의 예대로 이것을 말하느냐 율법도 이것을 말하지 아니하느냐

고전9:9 모세의 율법에 곡식을 밟아 떠는 소에게 망을 씌우지 말라 기록하였으니 하나님께서 어찌 소들을 위하여 염려하심이냐

고전9:10 오로지 우리를 위하여 말씀하심이 아니냐 과연 우리를 위하여 기록된 것이니 밭 가는 자는 소망을 가지고 갈며 곡식 떠는 자는 함께 얻을 소망을 가지고 떠는 것이라

고전9:11 우리가 너희에게 신령한 것을 뿌렸은즉 너희의 육적인 것을 거두기로 과하다 하겠느냐

고전9:12 다른 이들도 너희에게 이런 권리를 가졌거든 하물며 우리일까보냐 그러나 우리가 이 권리를 쓰지 아니하고 범사에 참는 것은 그리스도의 복음에 아무 장애가 없게 하려 함이로다

고전9:13 성전의 일을 하는 이들은 성전에서 나는 것을 먹으며 제단에서 섬기는 이들은 제단과 함께 나누는 것을 너희가 알지 못하느냐

고전9:14 이와 같이 주께서도 복음 전하는 자들이 복음으로 말미암아 살리라 명하셨느니라

고전9:15 그러나 내가 이것을 하나도 쓰지 아니하였고 또 이 말을 쓰는 것은 내게 이같이 하여 달라는 것이 아니라 내가 차라리 죽을지언정 누구든지 내 자랑하는 것을 헛된 데로 돌리지 못하게 하리라

고전9:16 내가 복음을 전할지라도 자랑할 것이 없음은 내가 부득불 할 일이라 만일 복음을 전하지 아니하면 내게 화가 있을 것이로다

고전9:17 내가 내 자의로 이것을 행하면 상을 얻으려니와 자의로 아니한다 할지라도 나는 사명을 맡았노라

고전9:18 그런즉 내 상이 무엇이냐 내가 복음을 전할 때에 값없이 전하고 복음으로 말미암아 내게 있는 권리를 다 쓰지 아니하는 이것이로다

고전9:19 내가 모든 사람에게서 자유로우나 스스로 모든 사람에게 종이 된 것은 더 많은 사람을 얻고자 함이라

고전9:20 유대인들에게 내가 유대인과 같이 된 것은 유대인들을 얻고자 함이요 율법 아래에 있는 자들에게는 내가 율법 아래에 있지 아니하나 율법 아래 있는 자 같이 된 것은 율법 아래에 있는 자들을 얻고자 함이요

고전9:21 율법 없는 자에게는 내가 하나님께는 율법 없는 자가 아니요 도리어 그리스도의 율법 아래에 있는 자나 율법 없는 자와 같이 된 것은 율법 없는 자들을 얻고자 함이라

고전9:22 약한 자들에게 내가 약한 자와 같이 된 것은 약한 자들을 얻고자 함이요 내가 여러 사람에게 여러 모습이 된 것은 아무쪼록 몇 사람이라도 구원하고자 함이니

고전9:23 내가 복음을 위하여 모든 것을 행함은 복음에 참여하고자 함이라

고전9:24 운동장에서 달음질하는 자들이 다 달릴지라도 오직 상을 받는 사람은 한 사람인 줄을 너희가 알지 못하느냐 너희도 상을 받도록 이와 같이 달음질하라

고전9:25 이기기를 다투는 자마다 모든 일에 절제하나니 그들은 썩을 승리자의 관을 얻고자 하되 우리는 썩지 아니할 것을 얻고자 하노라

고전9:26 그러므로 나는 달음질하기를 향방 없는 것 같이 아니하고 싸우기를 허공을 치는 것 같이 아니하며

고전9:27 내가 내 몸을 쳐 복종하게 함은 내가 남에게 전파한 후에 자신이 도리어 버림을 당할까 두려워함이로다

Exodus 5.

5:1 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the desert.'"

5:2 Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go."

5:3 Then they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword."

5:4 But the king of Egypt said, "Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!"

5:5 Then Pharaoh said, "Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working."

5:6 That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and foremen in charge of the people:

5:7 "You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw.

5:8 But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don't reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.'

5:9 Make the work harder for the men so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies."

5:10 Then the slave drivers and the foremen went out and said to the people, "This is what Pharaoh says: 'I will not give you any more straw.

5:11 Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.'"

5:12 So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw.

5:13 The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, "Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw."

5:14 The Israelite foremen appointed by Pharaoh's slave drivers were beaten and were asked, "Why didn't you meet your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?"

5:15 Then the Israelite foremen went and appealed to Pharaoh: "Why have you treated your servants this way?

5:16 Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, 'Make bricks!' Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people."

5:17 Pharaoh said, "Lazy, that's what you are--lazy! That is why you keep saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.'

5:18 Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks."

5:19 The Israelite foremen realized they were in trouble when they were told, "You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day."

5:20 When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them,

5:21 and they said, "May the LORD look upon you and judge you! You have made us a stench to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us."

5:22 Moses returned to the LORD and said, "O Lord, why have you brought trouble upon this people? Is this why you sent me?

5:23 Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble upon this people, and you have not rescued your people at all."

Luke 8.

8:1 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him,

8:2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out;

8:3 Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod's household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

8:4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable:

8:5 "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up.

8:6 Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture.

8:7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants.

8:8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown." When he said this, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

8:9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant.

8:10 He said, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, "'though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.'

8:11 "This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.

8:12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.

8:13 Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.

8:14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.

8:15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

8:16 "No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.

8:17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.

8:18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken from him."

8:19 Now Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd.

8:20 Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you."

8:21 He replied, "My mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and put it into practice."

8:22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, "Let's go over to the other side of the lake." So they got into a boat and set out.

8:23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.

8:24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.

8:25 "Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, "Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him."

8:26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee.

8:27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs.

8:28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torture me!"

8:29 For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

8:30 Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "Legion," he replied, because many demons had gone into him.

8:31 And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.

8:32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into them, and he gave them permission.

8:33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

8:34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside,

8:35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

8:36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured.

8:37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.

8:38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying,

8:39 "Return home and tell how much God has done for you." So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.

8:40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him.

8:41 Then a man named Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, came and fell at Jesus' feet, pleading with him to come to his house

8:42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him.

8:43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her.

8:44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.

8:45 "Who touched me?" Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, "Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you."

8:46 But Jesus said, "Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me."

8:47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed.

8:48 Then he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace."

8:49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. "Your daughter is dead," he said. "Don't bother the teacher any more."

8:50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed."

8:51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child's father and mother.

8:52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. "Stop wailing," Jesus said. "She is not dead but asleep."

8:53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.

8:54 But he took her by the hand and said, "My child, get up!"

8:55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat.

8:56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.

Job 22.

22:1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:

22:2 "Can a man be of benefit to God? Can even a wise man benefit him?

22:3 What pleasure would it give the Almighty if you were righteous? What would he gain if your ways were blameless?

22:4 "Is it for your piety that he rebukes you and brings charges against you?

22:5 Is not your wickedness great? Are not your sins endless?

22:6 You demanded security from your brothers for no reason; you stripped men of their clothing, leaving them naked.

22:7 You gave no water to the weary and you withheld food from the hungry,

22:8 though you were a powerful man, owning land--an honored man, living on it.

22:9 And you sent widows away empty-handed and broke the strength of the fatherless.

22:10 That is why snares are all around you, why sudden peril terrifies you,

22:11 why it is so dark you cannot see, and why a flood of water covers you.

22:12 "Is not God in the heights of heaven? And see how lofty are the highest stars!

22:13 Yet you say, 'What does God know? Does he judge through such darkness?

22:14 Thick clouds veil him, so he does not see us as he goes about in the vaulted heavens.'

22:15 Will you keep to the old path that evil men have trod?

22:16 They were carried off before their time, their foundations washed away by a flood.

22:17 They said to God, 'Leave us alone! What can the Almighty do to us?'

22:18 Yet it was he who filled their houses with good things, so I stand aloof from the counsel of the wicked.

22:19 "The righteous see their ruin and rejoice; the innocent mock them, saying,

22:20 'Surely our foes are destroyed, and fire devours their wealth.'

22:21 "Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you.

22:22 Accept instruction from his mouth and lay up his words in your heart.

22:23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored: If you remove wickedness far from your tent

22:24 and assign your nuggets to the dust, your gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines,

22:25 then the Almighty will be your gold, the choicest silver for you.

22:26 Surely then you will find delight in the Almighty and will lift up your face to God.

22:27 You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will fulfill your vows.

22:28 What you decide on will be done, and light will shine on your ways.

22:29 When men are brought low and you say, 'Lift them up!' then he will save the downcast.

22:30 He will deliver even one who is not innocent, who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands."

1 Corinthians 9.

9:1 Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not the result of my work in the Lord?

9:2 Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely I am to you! For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

9:3 This is my defense to those who sit in judgment on me.

9:4 Don't we have the right to food and drink?

9:5 Don't we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord's brothers and Cephas?

9:6 Or is it only I and Barnabas who must work for a living?

9:7 Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink of the milk?

9:8 Do I say this merely from a human point of view? Doesn't the Law say the same thing?

9:9 For it is written in the Law of Moses: "Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain." Is it about oxen that God is concerned?

9:10 Surely he says this for us, doesn't he? Yes, this was written for us, because when the plowman plows and the thresher threshes, they ought to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest.

9:11 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you?

9:12 If others have this right of support from you, shouldn't we have it all the more? But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.

9:13 Don't you know that those who work in the temple get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar?

9:14 In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.

9:15 But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing this in the hope that you will do such things for me. I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of this boast.

9:16 Yet when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, for I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!

9:17 If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me.

9:18 What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make use of my rights in preaching it.

9:19 Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.

9:20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law.

9:21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so as to win those not having the law.

9:22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some.

9:23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

9:24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

9:25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.

9:26 Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air.

9:27 No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
