Exodus 1.
1:1 These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt with Jacob, each with his family:
1:2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah;
1:3 Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin;
1:4 Dan and Naphtali; Gad and Asher.
1:5 The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy in all; Joseph was already in Egypt.
1:6 Now Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died,
1:7 but the Israelites were fruitful and multiplied greatly and became exceedingly numerous, so that the land was filled with them.
1:8 Then a new king, who did not know about Joseph, came to power in Egypt.
1:9 "Look," he said to his people, "the Israelites have become much too numerous for us.
1:10 Come, we must deal shrewdly with them or they will become even more numerous and, if war breaks out, will join our enemies, fight against us and leave the country."
1:11 So they put slave masters over them to oppress them with forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh.
1:12 But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites
1:13 and worked them ruthlessly.
1:14 They made their lives bitter with hard labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their hard labor the Egyptians used them ruthlessly.
1:15 The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, whose names were Shiphrah and Puah,
1:16 "When you help the Hebrew women in childbirth and observe them on the delivery stool, if it is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live."
1:17 The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live.
1:18 Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, "Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?"
1:19 The midwives answered Pharaoh, "Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive."
1:20 So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous.
1:21 And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.
1:22 Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: "Every boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live."
Mark 4.
4:1 Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake, while all the people were along the shore at the water's edge.
4:2 He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said:
4:3 "Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed.
4:4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.
4:5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow.
4:6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.
4:7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain.
4:8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, multiplying thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times."
4:9 Then Jesus said, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
4:10 When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables.
4:11 He told them, "The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables
4:12 so that, "'they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!'"
4:13 Then Jesus said to them, "Don't you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable?
4:14 The farmer sows the word.
4:15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them.
4:16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy.
4:17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.
4:18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word;
4:19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful.
4:20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop--thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown."
4:21 He said to them, "Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don't you put it on its stand?
4:22 For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open.
4:23 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear."
4:24 "Consider carefully what you hear," he continued. "With the measure you use, it will be measured to you--and even more.
4:25 Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him."
4:26 He also said, "This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground.
4:27 Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.
4:28 All by itself the soil produces grain--first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head.
4:29 As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come."
4:30 Again he said, "What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it?
4:31 It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest seed you plant in the ground.
4:32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds of the air can perch in its shade."
4:33 With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand.
4:34 He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.
4:35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side."
4:36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.
4:37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.
4:38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"
4:39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
4:40 He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?"
4:41 They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"
Job 18.
18:1 Then Bildad the Shuhite replied:
18:2 "When will you end these speeches? Be sensible, and then we can talk.
18:3 Why are we regarded as cattle and considered stupid in your sight?
18:4 You who tear yourself to pieces in your anger, is the earth to be abandoned for your sake? Or must the rocks be moved from their place?
18:5 "The lamp of the wicked is snuffed out; the flame of his fire stops burning.
18:6 The light in his tent becomes dark; the lamp beside him goes out.
18:7 The vigor of his step is weakened; his own schemes throw him down.
18:8 His feet thrust him into a net and he wanders into its mesh.
18:9 A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare holds him fast.
18:10 A noose is hidden for him on the ground; a trap lies in his path.
18:11 Terrors startle him on every side and dog his every step.
18:12 Calamity is hungry for him; disaster is ready for him when he falls.
18:13 It eats away parts of his skin; death's firstborn devours his limbs.
18:14 He is torn from the security of his tent and marched off to the king of terrors.
18:15 Fire resides in his tent; burning sulfur is scattered over his dwelling.
18:16 His roots dry up below and his branches wither above.
18:17 The memory of him perishes from the earth; he has no name in the land.
18:18 He is driven from light into darkness and is banished from the world.
18:19 He has no offspring or descendants among his people, no survivor where once he lived.
18:20 Men of the west are appalled at his fate; men of the east are seized with horror.
18:21 Surely such is the dwelling of an evil man; such is the place of one who knows not God."
Romans 5.
5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
5:2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.
5:3 Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
5:4 perseverance, character; and character, hope.
5:5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
5:6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.
5:7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die.
5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
5:9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him!
5:10 For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
5:11 Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned--
5:13 for before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law.
5:14 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come.
5:15 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God's grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!
5:16 Again, the gift of God is not like the result of the one man's sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification.
5:17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.
5:18 Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men.
5:19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
5:20 The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,
5:21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
