창세기 49 장.

창49:1 야곱이 그 아들들을 불러 이르되 너희는 모이라 너희가 후일에 당할 일을 내가 너희에게 이르리라

창49:2 너희는 모여 들으라 야곱의 아들들아 너희 아버지 이스라엘에게 들을지어다

창49:3 르우벤아 너는 내 장자요 내 능력이요 내 기력의 시작이라 위풍이 월등하고 권능이 탁월하다마는

창49:4 물의 끓음 같았은즉 너는 탁월하지 못하리니 네가 아버지의 침상에 올라 더럽혔음이로다 그가 내 침상에 올랐었도다

창49:5 시므온과 레위는 형제요 그들의 칼은 폭력의 도구로다

창49:6 내 혼아 그들의 모의에 상관하지 말지어다 내 영광아 그들의 집회에 참여하지 말지어다 그들이 그들의 분노대로 사람을 죽이고 그들의 혈기대로 소의 발목 힘줄을 끊었음이로다

창49:7 그 노여움이 혹독하니 저주를 받을 것이요 분기가 맹렬하니 저주를 받을 것이라 내가 그들을 야곱 중에서 나누며 이스라엘 중에서 흩으리로다

창49:8 유다야 너는 네 형제의 찬송이 될지라 네 손이 네 원수의 목을 잡을 것이요 네 아버지의 아들들이 네 앞에 절하리로다

창49:9 유다는 사자 새끼로다 내 아들아 너는 움킨 것을 찢고 올라갔도다 그가 엎드리고 웅크림이 수사자 같고 암사자 같으니 누가 그를 범할 수 있으랴

창49:10 규가 유다를 떠나지 아니하며 통치자의 지팡이가 그 발 사이에서 떠나지 아니하기를 실로가 오시기까지 이르리니 그에게 모든 백성이 복종하리로다

창49:11 그의 나귀를 포도나무에 매며 그의 암나귀 새끼를 아름다운 포도나무에 맬 것이며 또 그 옷을 포도주에 빨며 그의 복장을 포도즙에 빨리로다

창49:12 그의 눈은 포도주로 인하여 붉겠고 그의 이는 우유로 말미암아 희리로다

창49:13 스불론은 해변에 거주하리니 그 곳은 배 매는 해변이라 그의 경계가 시돈까지리로다

창49:14 잇사갈은 양의 우리 사이에 꿇어앉은 건장한 나귀로다

창49:15 그는 쉴 곳을 보고 좋게 여기며 토지를 보고 아름답게 여기고 어깨를 내려 짐을 메고 압제 아래에서 섬기리로다

창49:16 단은 이스라엘의 한 지파 같이 그의 백성을 심판하리로다

창49:17 단은 길섶의 뱀이요 샛길의 독사로다 말굽을 물어서 그 탄 자를 뒤로 떨어지게 하리로다

창49:18 여호와여 나는 주의 구원을 기다리나이다

창49:19 갓은 군대의 추격을 받으나 도리어 그 뒤를 추격하리로다

창49:20 아셀에게서 나는 먹을 것은 기름진 것이라 그가 왕의 수라상을 차리리로다

창49:21 납달리는 놓인 암사슴이라 아름다운 소리를 발하는도다

창49:22 요셉은 무성한 가지 곧 샘 곁의 무성한 가지라 그 가지가 담을 넘었도다

창49:23 활쏘는 자가 그를 학대하며 적개심을 가지고 그를 쏘았으나

창49:24 요셉의 활은 도리어 굳세며 그의 팔은 힘이 있으니 이는 야곱의 전능자 이스라엘의 반석인 목자의 손을 힘입음이라

창49:25 네 아버지의 하나님께로 말미암나니 그가 너를 도우실 것이요 전능자로 말미암나니 그가 네게 복을 주실 것이라 위로 하늘의 복과 아래로 깊은 샘의 복과 젖먹이는 복과 태의 복이리로다

창49:26 네 아버지의 축복이 내 선조의 축복보다 나아서 영원한 산이 한 없음 같이 이 축복이 요셉의 머리로 돌아오며 그 형제 중 뛰어난 자의 정수리로 돌아오리로다

창49:27 베냐민은 물어뜯는 이리라 아침에는 빼앗은 것을 먹고 저녁에는 움킨 것을 나누리로다

창49:28 이들은 이스라엘의 열두 지파라 이와 같이 그들의 아버지가 그들에게 말하고 그들에게 축복하였으니 곧 그들 각 사람의 분량대로 축복하였더라

창49:29 그가 그들에게 명하여 이르되 내가 내 조상들에게로 돌아가리니 나를 헷 사람 에브론의 밭에 있는 굴에 우리 선조와 함께 장사하라

창49:30 이 굴은 가나안 땅 마므레 앞 막벨라 밭에 있는 것이라 아브라함이 헷 사람 에브론에게서 밭과 함께 사서 그의 매장지를 삼았으므로

창49:31 아브라함과 그의 아내 사라가 거기 장사되었고 이삭과 그의 아내 리브가도 거기 장사되었으며 나도 레아를 그 곳에 장사하였노라

창49:32 이 밭과 거기 있는 굴은 헷 사람에게서 산 것이니라

창49:33 야곱이 아들에게 명하기를 마치고 그 발을 침상에 모으고 숨을 거두니 그의 백성에게로 돌아갔더라

누가복음 2 장.

눅2:1 그 때에 가이사 아구스도가 영을 내려 천하로 다 호적하라 하였으니

눅2:2 이 호적은 구레뇨가 수리아 총독 되었을 때에 처음 한 것이라

눅2:3 모든 사람이 호적하러 각각 고향으로 돌아가매

눅2:4 요셉도 다윗의 집 족속이므로 갈릴리 나사렛 동네에서 유대를 향하여 베들레헴이라 하는 다윗의 동네로

눅2:5 그 약혼한 마리아와 함께 호적하러 올라가니 마리아가 이미 잉태하였더라

눅2:6 거기 있을 그 때에 해산할 날이 차서

눅2:7 첫아들을 낳아 강보로 싸서 구유에 뉘었으니 이는 여관에 있을 곳이 없음이러라

눅2:8 그 지역에 목자들이 밤에 밖에서 자기 양 떼를 지키더니

눅2:9 주의 사자가 곁에 서고 주의 영광이 그들을 두루 비추매 크게 무서워 하는지라

눅2:10 천사가 이르되 무서워하지 말라 보라 내가 온 백성에게 미칠 큰 기쁨의 좋은 소식을 너희에게 전하노라

눅2:11 오늘 다윗의 동네에 너희를 위하여 구주가 나셨으니 곧 그리스도 주시니라

눅2:12 너희가 가서 강보에 싸여 구유에 뉘어 있는 아기를 보리니 이것이 너희에게 표적이니라 하더니

눅2:13 홀연히 수많은 천군이 그 천사들과 함께 하나님을 찬송하여 이르되

눅2:14 지극히 높은 곳에서는 하나님께 영광이요 땅에서는 하나님이 기뻐하신 사람들 중에 평화로다 하니라

눅2:15 천사들이 떠나 하늘로 올라가니 목자가 서로 말하되 이제 베들레헴으로 가서 주께서 우리에게 알리신 바 이 이루어진 일을 보자 하고

눅2:16 빨리 가서 마리아와 요셉과 구유에 누인 아기를 찾아서

눅2:17 보고 천사가 자기들에게 이 아기에 대하여 말한 것을 전하니

눅2:18 듣는 자가 다 목자들이 그들에게 말하는 것들을 놀랍게 여기되

눅2:19 마리아는 이 모든 말을 마음에 새기어 생각하니라

눅2:20 목자들은 자기들에게 이르던 바와 같이 듣고 본 그 모든 것으로 인하여 하나님께 영광을 돌리고 찬송하며 돌아가니라

눅2:21 할례할 팔 일이 되매 그 이름을 예수라 하니 곧 잉태하기 전에 천사가 일컬은 바러라

눅2:22 모세의 법대로 정결예식의 날이 차매 아기를 데리고 예루살렘에 올라가니

눅2:23 이는 주의 율법에 쓴 바 첫 태에 처음 난 남자마다 주의 거룩한 자라 하리라 한 대로 아기를 주께 드리고

눅2:24 또 주의 율법에 말씀하신 대로 산비둘기 한 쌍이나 혹은 어린 집비둘기 둘로 제사하려 함이더라

눅2:25 예루살렘에 시므온이라 하는 사람이 있으니 이 사람은 의롭고 경건하여 이스라엘의 위로를 기다리는 자라 성령이 그 위에 계시더라

눅2:26 그가 주의 그리스도를 보기 전에는 죽지 아니하리라 하는 성령의 지시를 받았더니

눅2:27 성령의 감동으로 성전에 들어가매 마침 부모가 율법의 관례대로 행하고자 하여 그 아기 예수를 데리고 오는지라

눅2:28 시므온이 아기를 안고 하나님을 찬송하여 이르되

눅2:29 주재여 이제는 말씀하신 대로 종을 평안히 놓아 주시는도다

눅2:30 내 눈이 주의 구원을 보았사오니

눅2:31 이는 만민 앞에 예비하신 것이요

눅2:32 이방을 비추는 빛이요 주의 백성 이스라엘의 영광이니이다 하니

눅2:33 그의 부모가 그에 대한 말들을 놀랍게 여기더라

눅2:34 시므온이 그들에게 축복하고 그의 어머니 마리아에게 말하여 이르되 보라 이는 이스라엘 중 많은 사람을 패하거나 흥하게 하며 비방을 받는 표적이 되기 위하여 세움을 받았고

눅2:35 또 칼이 네 마음을 찌르듯 하리니 이는 여러 사람의 마음의 생각을 드러내려 함이니라 하더라

눅2:36 또 아셀 지파 바누엘의 딸 안나라 하는 선지자가 있어 나이가 매우 많았더라 그가 결혼한 후 일곱 해 동안 남편과 함께 살다가

눅2:37 과부가 되고 팔십사 세가 되었더라 이 사람이 성전을 떠나지 아니하고 주야로 금식하며 기도함으로 섬기더니

눅2:38 마침 이 때에 나아와서 하나님께 감사하고 예루살렘의 속량을 바라는 모든 사람에게 그에 대하여 말하니라

눅2:39 주의 율법을 따라 모든 일을 마치고 갈릴리로 돌아가 본 동네 나사렛에 이르니라

눅2:40 아기가 자라며 강하여지고 지혜가 충만하며 하나님의 은혜가 그의 위에 있더라

눅2:41 그의 부모가 해마다 유월절이 되면 예루살렘으로 가더니

눅2:42 예수께서 열두 살 되었을 때에 그들이 이 절기의 관례를 따라 올라 갔다가

눅2:43 그 날들을 마치고 돌아갈 때에 아이 예수는 예루살렘에 머무셨더라 그 부모는 이를 알지 못하고

눅2:44 동행 중에 있는 줄로 생각하고 하룻길을 간 후 친족과 아는 자 중에서 찾되

눅2:45 만나지 못하매 찾으면서 예루살렘에 돌아갔더니

눅2:46 사흘 후에 성전에서 만난즉 그가 선생들 중에 앉으사 그들에게 듣기도 하시며 묻기도 하시니

눅2:47 듣는 자가 다 그 지혜와 대답을 놀랍게 여기더라

눅2:48 그의 부모가 보고 놀라며 그의 어머니는 이르되 아이야 어찌하여 우리에게 이렇게 하였느냐 보라 네 아버지와 내가 근심하여 너를 찾았노라

눅2:49 예수께서 이르시되 어찌하여 나를 찾으셨나이까 내가 내 아버지 집에 있어야 될 줄을 알지 못하셨나이까 하시니

눅2:50 그 부모가 그가 하신 말씀을 깨닫지 못하더라

눅2:51 예수께서 함께 내려가사 나사렛에 이르러 순종하여 받드시더라 그 어머니는 이 모든 말을 마음에 두니라

눅2:52 예수는 지혜와 키가 자라가며 하나님과 사람에게 더욱 사랑스러워 가시더라

욥기 15 장.

욥15:1 데만 사람 엘리바스가 대답하여 이르되

욥15:2 지혜로운 자가 어찌 헛된 지식으로 대답하겠느냐 어찌 동풍을 그의 복부에 채우겠느냐

욥15:3 어찌 도움이 되지 아니하는 이야기, 무익한 말로 변론하겠느냐

욥15:4 참으로 네가 하나님 경외하는 일을 그만두어 하나님 앞에 묵도하기를 그치게 하는구나

욥15:5 네 죄악이 네 입을 가르치나니 네가 간사한 자의 혀를 좋아하는구나

욥15:6 너를 정죄한 것은 내가 아니요 네 입이라 네 입술이 네게 불리하게 증언하느니라

욥15:7 네가 제일 먼저 난 사람이냐 산들이 있기 전에 네가 출생하였느냐

욥15:8 하나님의 오묘하심을 네가 들었느냐 지혜를 홀로 가졌느냐

욥15:9 네가 아는 것을 우리가 알지 못하는 것이 무엇이냐 네가 깨달은 것을 우리가 소유하지 못한 것이 무엇이냐

욥15:10 우리 중에는 머리가 횐 사람도 있고 연로한 사람도 있고 네 아버지보다 나이가 많은 사람도 있느니라

욥15:11 하나님의 위로와 은밀하게 하시는 말씀이 네게 작은 것이냐

욥15:12 어찌하여 네 마음에 불만스러워하며 네 눈을 번뜩거리며

욥15:13 네 영이 하나님께 분노를 터뜨리며 네 입을 놀리느냐

욥15:14 사람이 어찌 깨끗하겠느냐 여인에게서 난 자가 어찌 의롭겠느냐

욥15:15 하나님은 거룩한 자들을 믿지 아니하시나니 하늘이라도 그가 보시기에 부정하거든

욥15:16 하물며 악을 저지르기를 물 마심 같이 하는 가증하고 부패한 사람을 용납하시겠느냐

욥15:17 내가 네게 보이리니 내게서 들으라 내가 본 것을 설명하리라

욥15:18 이는 곧 지혜로운 자들이 전하여 준 것이니 그들의 조상에게서 숨기지 아니하였느니라

욥15:19 이 땅은 그들에게만 주셨으므로 외인은 그들 중에 왕래하지 못하였느니라

욥15:20 그 말에 이르기를 악인은 그의 일평생에 고통을 당하며 포악자의 햇수는 정해졌으므로

욥15:21 그의 귀에는 무서운 소리가 들리고 그가 평안할 때에 멸망시키는 자가 그에게 이르리니

욥15:22 그가 어두운 데서 나오기를 바라지 못하고 칼날이 숨어서 기다리느니라

욥15:23 그는 헤매며 음식을 구하여 이르기를 어디 있느냐 하며 흑암의 날이 가까운 줄을 스스로 아느니라

욥15:24 환난과 역경이 그를 두렵게 하며 싸움을 준비한 왕처럼 그를 쳐서 이기리라

욥15:25 이는 그의 손을 들어 하나님을 대적하며 교만하여 전능자에게 힘을 과시하였음이니라

욥15:26 그는 목을 세우고 방패를 들고 하나님께 달려드니

욥15:27 그의 얼굴에는 살이 찌고 허리에는 기름이 엉기었고

욥15:28 그는 황폐한 성읍, 사람이 살지 아니하는 집, 돌무더기라 될 곳에 거주하였음이니라

욥15:29 그는 부요하지 못하고 재산이 보존되지 못하고 그의 소유가 땅에서 증식되지 못할 것이라

욥15:30 어두운 곳을 떠나지 못하리니 불꽃이 그의 가지를 말릴 것이라 하나님의 입김으로 그가 불려가리라

욥15:31 그가 스스로 속아 허무한 것을 믿지 아니할 것은 허무한 것이 그의 보응이 될 것임이라

욥15:32 그의 날이 이르기 전에 그 일이 이루어질 것인즉 그의 가지가 푸르지 못하리니

욥15:33 포도 열매가 익기 전에 떨어짐 같고 감람 꽃이 곧 떨어짐 같으리라

욥15:34 경건하지 못한 무리는 자식을 낳지 못할 것이며 뇌물을 받는 자의 장막은 불탈 것이라

욥15:35 그들은 재난을 잉태하고 죄악을 낳으며 그들의 뱃속에 속임을 준비하느니라

고린도전서 3 장.

고전3:1 형제들아 내가 신령한 자들을 대함과 같이 너희에게 말할 수 없어서 육신에 속한 자 곧 그리스도 안에서 어린 아이들을 대함과 같이 하노라

고전3:2 내가 너희를 젖으로 먹이고 밥으로 아니하였노니 이는 너희가 감당하지 못하였음이거니와 지금도 못하리라

고전3:3 너희는 아직도 육신에 속한 자로다 너희 가운데 시기와 분쟁이 있으니 어찌 육신에 속하여 사람을 따라 행함이 아니리요

고전3:4 어떤 이는 말하되 나는 바울에게라 하고 다른 이는 나는 아볼로에게라 하니 너희가 육의 사람이 아니리요

고전3:5 그런즉 아볼로는 무엇이며 바울은 무엇이냐 그들은 주께서 각각 주신 대로 너희로 하여금 믿게 한 사역자들이니라

고전3:6 나는 심었고 아볼로는 물을 주었으되 오직 하나님께서 자라나게 하셨나니

고전3:7 그런즉 심는 이나 물 주는 이는 아무 것도 아니로되 오직 자라게 하시는 이는 하나님뿐이니라

고전3:8 심는 이와 물 주는 이는 한가지이나 각각 자기가 일한 대로 자기의 상을 받으리라

고전3:9 우리는 하나님의 동역자들이요 너희는 하나님의 밭이요 하나님의 집이니라

고전3:10 내게 주신 하나님의 은혜를 따라 내가 지혜로운 건축자와 같이 터를 닦아 두매 다른 이가 그 위에 세우나 그러나 각각 어떻게 그 위에 세울까를 조심할지니라

고전3:11 이 닦아 둔 것 외에 능히 다른 터를 닦아 둘 자가 없으니 이 터는 곧 예수 그리스도라

고전3:12 만일 누구든지 금이나 은이나 보석이나 나무나 풀이나 짚으로 이 터 위에 세우면

고전3:13 각 사람의 공적이 나타날 터인데 그 날이 공적을 밝히리니 이는 불로 나타내고 그 불이 각 사람의 공적이 어떠한 것을 시험할 것임이라

고전3:14 만일 누구든지 그 위에 세운 공적이 그대로 있으면 상을 받고

고전3:15 누구든지 공적이 불타면 해를 받으리니 그러나 자신은 구원을 받되 불 가운데서 받은 것 같으리라

고전3:16 너희는 너희가 하나님의 성전인 것과 하나님의 성령이 너희 안에 계시는 것을 알지 못하느냐

고전3:17 누구든지 하나님의 성전을 더럽히면 하나님이 그 사람을 멸하시리라 하나님의 성전은 거룩하니 너희도 그러하니라

고전3:18 아무도 자신을 속이지 말라 너희 중에 누구든지 이 세상에서 지혜 있는 줄로 생각하거든 어리석은 자가 되라 그리하여야 지혜로운 자가 되리라

고전3:19 이 세상 지혜는 하나님께 어리석은 것이니 기록된 바 하나님은 지혜 있는 자들로 하여금 자기 꾀에 빠지게 하시는 이라 하였고

고전3:20 또 주께서 지혜 있는 자들의 생각을 헛것으로 아신다 하셨느니라

고전3:21 그런즉 누구든지 사람을 자랑하지 말라 만물이 다 너희 것임이라

고전3:22 바울이나 아볼로나 게바나 세계나 생명이나 사망이나 지금 것이나 장래 것이나 다 너희의 것이요

고전3:23 너희는 그리스도의 것이요 그리스도는 하나님의 것이니라

Genesis 49.

49:1 Then Jacob called for his sons and said: "Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come.

49:2 "Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob; listen to your father Israel.

49:3 "Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, the first sign of my strength, excelling in honor, excelling in power.

49:4 Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel, for you went up onto your father's bed, onto my couch and defiled it.

49:5 "Simeon and Levi are brothers--their swords are weapons of violence.

49:6 Let me not enter their council, let me not join their assembly, for they have killed men in their anger and hamstrung oxen as they pleased.

49:7 Cursed be their anger, so fierce, and their fury, so cruel! I will scatter them in Jacob and disperse them in Israel.

49:8 "Judah, your brothers will praise you; your hand will be on the neck of your enemies; your father's sons will bow down to you.

49:9 You are a lion's cub, O Judah; you return from the prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies down, like a lioness--who dares to rouse him?

49:10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs and the obedience of the nations is his.

49:11 He will tether his donkey to a vine, his colt to the choicest branch; he will wash his garments in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes.

49:12 His eyes will be darker than wine, his teeth whiter than milk.

49:13 "Zebulun will live by the seashore and become a haven for ships; his border will extend toward Sidon.

49:14 "Issachar is a rawboned donkey lying down between two saddlebags.

49:15 When he sees how good is his resting place and how pleasant is his land, he will bend his shoulder to the burden and submit to forced labor.

49:16 "Dan will provide justice for his people as one of the tribes of Israel.

49:17 Dan will be a serpent by the roadside, a viper along the path, that bites the horse's heels so that its rider tumbles backward.

49:18 "I look for your deliverance, O LORD.

49:19 "Gad will be attacked by a band of raiders, but he will attack them at their heels.

49:20 "Asher's food will be rich; he will provide delicacies fit for a king.

49:21 "Naphtali is a doe set free that bears beautiful fawns.

49:22 "Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine near a spring, whose branches climb over a wall.

49:23 With bitterness archers attacked him; they shot at him with hostility.

49:24 But his bow remained steady, his strong arms stayed limber, because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,

49:25 because of your father's God, who helps you, because of the Almighty, who blesses you with blessings of the heavens above, blessings of the deep that lies below, blessings of the breast and womb.

49:26 Your father's blessings are greater than the blessings of the ancient mountains, than the bounty of the age-old hills. Let all these rest on the head of Joseph, on the brow of the prince among his brothers.

49:27 "Benjamin is a ravenous wolf; in the morning he devours the prey, in the evening he divides the plunder."

49:28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, giving each the blessing appropriate to him.

49:29 Then he gave them these instructions: "I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite,

49:30 the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre in Canaan, which Abraham bought as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite, along with the field.

49:31 There Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried, there Isaac and his wife Rebekah were buried, and there I buried Leah.

49:32 The field and the cave in it were bought from the Hittites."

49:33 When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.

Luke 2.

2:1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.

2:2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)

2:3 And everyone went to his own town to register.

2:4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.

2:5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

2:6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born,

2:7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

2:8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.

2:9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

2:10 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

2:11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.

2:12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

2:13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

2:14 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

2:15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."

2:16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.

2:17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child,

2:18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

2:19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

2:20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

2:21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise him, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he had been conceived.

2:22 When the time of their purification according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord

2:23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord"),

2:24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: "a pair of doves or two young pigeons."

2:25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

2:26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

2:27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,

2:28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

2:29 "Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace.

2:30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,

2:31 which you have prepared in the sight of all people,

2:32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel."

2:33 The child's father and mother marveled at what was said about him.

2:34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: "This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against,

2:35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too."

2:36 There was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage,

2:37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.

2:38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.

2:39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.

2:40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.

2:41 Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover.

2:42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast, according to the custom.

2:43 After the Feast was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it.

2:44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends.

2:45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.

2:46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

2:47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.

2:48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you."

2:49 "Why were you searching for me?" he asked. "Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?"

2:50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

2:51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.

2:52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

Job 15.

15:1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:

15:2 "Would a wise man answer with empty notions or fill his belly with the hot east wind?

15:3 Would he argue with useless words, with speeches that have no value?

15:4 But you even undermine piety and hinder devotion to God.

15:5 Your sin prompts your mouth; you adopt the tongue of the crafty.

15:6 Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you.

15:7 "Are you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills?

15:8 Do you listen in on God's council? Do you limit wisdom to yourself?

15:9 What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have?

15:10 The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men even older than your father.

15:11 Are God's consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you?

15:12 Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash,

15:13 so that you vent your rage against God and pour out such words from your mouth?

15:14 "What is man, that he could be pure, or one born of woman, that he could be righteous?

15:15 If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes,

15:16 how much less man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks up evil like water!

15:17 "Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen,

15:18 what wise men have declared, hiding nothing received from their fathers

15:19 (to whom alone the land was given when no alien passed among them):

15:20 All his days the wicked man suffers torment, the ruthless through all the years stored up for him.

15:21 Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him.

15:22 He despairs of escaping the darkness; he is marked for the sword.

15:23 He wanders about--food for vultures; he knows the day of darkness is at hand.

15:24 Distress and anguish fill him with terror; they overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack,

15:25 because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty,

15:26 defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield.

15:27 "Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh,

15:28 he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble.

15:29 He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land.

15:30 He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God's mouth will carry him away.

15:31 Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return.

15:32 Before his time he will be paid in full, and his branches will not flourish.

15:33 He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms.

15:34 For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes.

15:35 They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit."

1 Corinthians 3.

3:1 Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly--mere infants in Christ.

3:2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.

3:3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men?

3:4 For when one says, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos," are you not mere men?

3:5 What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe--as the Lord has assigned to each his task.

3:6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.

3:7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.

3:8 The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor.

3:9 For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building.

3:10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds.

3:11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.

3:12 If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw,

3:13 his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work.

3:14 If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward.

3:15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.

3:16 Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?

3:17 If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple.

3:18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a "fool" so that he may become wise.

3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: "He catches the wise in their craftiness";

3:20 and again, "The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile."

3:21 So then, no more boasting about men! All things are yours,

3:22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future--all are yours,

3:23 and you are of Christ, and Christ is of God.
