창세기 47 장.

창47:1 요셉이 바로에게 가서 고하여 이르되 내 아버지와 내 형들과 그들의 양과 소와 모든 소유가 가나안 땅에서 와서 고센 땅에 있나이다 하고

창47:2 그의 형들 중 다섯 명을 택하여 바로에게 보이니

창47:3 바로가 요셉의 형들에게 묻되 너희 생업이 무엇이냐 그들이 바로에게 대답하되 종들은 목자이온데 우리와 선조가 다 그러하니이다 하고

창47:4 그들이 또 바로에게 고하되 가나안 땅에 기근이 심하여 종들의 양 떼를 칠 곳이 없기로 종들이 이 곳에 거류하고자 왔사오니 원하건대 종들로 고센 땅에 살게 하소서

창47:5 바로가 요셉에게 말하여 이르되 네 아버지와 형들이 네게 왔은즉

창47:6 애굽 땅이 네 앞에 있으니 땅의 좋은 곳에 네 아버지와 네 형들이 거주하게 하되 그들이 고센 땅에 거주하고 그들 중에 능력 있는 자가 있거든 그들로 내 가축을 관리하게 하라

창47:7 요셉이 자기 아버지 야곱을 인도하여 바로 앞에 서게 하니 야곱이 바로에게 축복하매

창47:8 바로가 야곱에게 묻되 네 나이가 얼마냐

창47:9 야곱이 바로에게 아뢰되 내 나그네 길의 세월이 백삼십 년이니이다 내 나이가 얼마 못 되니 우리 조상의 나그네 길의 연조에 미치지 못하나 짧고 험악한 세월을 보내었나이다 하고

창47:10 야곱이 바로에게 축복하고 그 앞에서 나오니라

창47:11 요셉이 바로의 명령대로 그의 아버지와 그의 형들에게 거주할 곳을 주되 애굽의 좋은 땅 라암셋을 그들에게 주어 소유로 삼게 하고

창47:12 또 그의 아버지와 그의 형들과 그의 아버지의 온 집에 그 식구를 따라 먹을 것을 주어 봉양하였더라

창47:13 기근이 더욱 심하여 사방에 먹을 것이 없고 애굽 땅과 가나안 땅이 기근으로 황폐하니

창47:14 요셉이 곡식을 팔아 애굽 땅과 가나안 땅에 있는 돈을 모두 거두어들이고 그 돈을 모두 거두어들이고 그 돈을 바로의 궁으로 가져가니

창47:15 애굽 땅과 가나안 땅에 돈이 떨어진지라 애굽 백성이 다 요셉에게 와서 이르되 돈이 떨어졌사오니 우리에게 먹을 거리를 주소서 어찌 주 앞에서 죽으리이까

창47:16 요셉이 이르되 너희의 가축을 내라 돈이 떨어졌은즉 내가 너희의 가축과 바꾸어 주리라

창47:17 그들이 그들의 가축을 요셉에게 끌어오는지라 요셉이 그 말과 양 떼와 소 떼와 나귀를 받고 그들에게 먹을 것을 주되 곧 그 모든 가축과 바꾸어서 그 해 동안에 먹을 것을 그들에게 주니라

창47:18 그 해가 다 가고 새 해가 되매 무리가 요셉에게 와서 그에게 말하되 우리가 주께 숨기지 아니하나이다 우리의 돈이 다하였고 우리의 가축 떼가 주께로 돌아갔사오니 주께 낼 것이 아무 것도 남지 아니하고 우리의 몸과 토지뿐이라

창47:19 우리가 어찌 우리의 토지와 함께 주의 목전에 죽으리이까 우리 몸과 우리 토지를 먹을 것을 주고 사소서 우리가 토지와 함께 바로의 종이 되리니 우리에게 종자를 주시면 우리가 살고 죽지 아니하며 토지도 황폐하게 되지 아니하리이다

창47:20 그러므로 요셉이 애굽의 모든 토지를 다 사서 바로에게 바치니 애굽의 모든 사람들이 기근에 시달려 각기 토지를 팔았음이라 땅이 바로의 소유가 되니라

창47:21 요셉이 애굽 땅 이 끝에서 저 끝까지의 백성을 성읍들에 옮겼으나

창47:22 제사장들의 토지는 사지 아니하였으니 제사장들은 바로에게서 녹을 받음이라 바로가 주는 녹을 먹으므로 그들이 토지를 팔지 않음이었더라

창47:23 요셉이 백성에게 이르되 오늘 내가 바로를 위하여 너희 몸과 너희 토지를 샀노라 여기 종자가 있으니 너희는 그 땅에 뿌리라

창47:24 추수의 오분의 일을 바로에게 상납하고 오분의 사는 너희가 가져서 토지의 종자로도 삼고 너희의 양식으로도 삼고 너희 가족과 어린 아이의 양식으로도 삼으라

창47:25 그들이 이르되 주께서 우리를 살리셨사오니 우리가 주께 은혜를 입고 바로의 종이 되겠나이다

창47:26 요셉이 애굽 토지법을 세우매 그 오분의 일이 바로에게 상납되나 제사장의 토지는 바로의 소유가 되지 아니하여 오늘날까지 이르니라

창47:27 이스라엘 족속이 애굽 고센 땅에 거주하며 거기서 생업을 얻어 생육하고 번성하였더라

창47:28 야곱이 애굽 땅에 십칠 년을 거주하였으니 그의 나이가 백사십칠 세라

창47:29 이스라엘이 죽을 날이 가까우매 그의 아들 요셉을 불러 그에게 이르되 이제 내가 네게 은혜를 입었거든 청하노니 네 손을 내 허벅지 아래에 넣고 인애와 성실함으로 내게 행하여 애굽에 나를 장사하지 아니하도록 하라

창47:30 내가 조상들과 함께 눕거든 너는 나를 애굽에서 메어다가 조상의 묘지에 장사하라 요셉이 이르되 내가 아버지의 말씀대로 행하리이다

창47:31 야곱이 또 이르되 내게 맹세하라 하매 그가 맹세하니 이스라엘이 침상 머리에서 하나님께 경배하니라

누가복음 1 장 1-38.

눅1:1 우리 중에 이루어진 사실에 대하여

눅1:2 처음부터 목격자와 말씀의 일꾼 된 자들이 전하여 준 그대로 내력을 저술하려고 붓을 든 사람이 많은지라

눅1:3 그 모든 일을 근원부터 자세히 미루어 살핀 나도 데오빌로 각하에게 차례대로 써 보내는 것이 좋은 줄 알았노니

눅1:4 이는 각하가 알고 있는 바를 더 확실하게 하려 함이로다

눅1:5 유대 왕 헤롯 때에 아비야 반열에 제사장 한 사람이 있었으니 이름은 사가랴요 그 아내는 아론의 자손이니 이름은 엘리사벳이라

눅1:6 이 두 사람이 하나님 앞에 의인이니 주의 모든 계명과 규례대로 흠이 없이 행하더라

눅1:7 엘리사벳이 잉태를 못하므로 그들에게 자식이 없고 두 사람의 나이가 많더라

눅1:8 마침 사가랴가 그 반열의 차례대로 하나님 앞에서 제사장의 직무를 행할새

눅1:9 제사장의 전례를 따라 제비를 뽑아 주의 성전에 들어가 분향하고

눅1:10 모든 백성은 그 분향하는 시간에 밖에서 기도하더니

눅1:11 주의 사자가 그에게 나타나 향단 우편에 선지라

눅1:12 사가랴가 보고 놀라며 무서워하니

눅1:13 천사가 그에게 이르되 사가랴여 무서워하지 말라 너의 간구함이 들린지라 네 아내 엘리사벳이 네게 아들을 낳아 주리니 그 이름을 요한이라 하라

눅1:14 너도 기뻐하고 즐거워할 것이요 많은 사람도 그의 태어남을 기뻐하리니

눅1:15 이는 그가 주 앞에 큰 자가 되며 포도주나 독한 술을 마시지 아니하며 모태로부터 성령의 충만함을 받아

눅1:16 이스라엘 자손을 주 곧 그들의 하나님께로 많이 돌아오게 하겠음이라

눅1:17 그가 또 엘리야의 심령과 능력으로 주 앞에 먼저 와서 아버지의 마음을 자식에게, 거스르는 자를 의인의 슬기에 돌아오게 하고 주를 위하여 세운 백성을 예비하리라

눅1:18 사가랴가 천사에게 이르되 내가 이것을 어떻게 알리요 내가 늙고 아내도 나이가 많으니이다

눅1:19 천사가 대답하여 이르되 나는 하나님 앞에 서 있는 가브리엘이라 이 좋은 소식을 전하여 네게 말하라고 보내심을 받았노라

눅1:20 보라 이 일이 되는 날까지 네가 말 못하는 자가 되어 능히 말을 못하리니 이는 네가 내 말을 믿지 아니함이거니와 때가 이르면 내 말이 이루어지리라 하더라

눅1:21 백성들이 사가랴를 기다리며 그가 성전 안에서 지체함을 이상히 여기더라

눅1:22 그가 나와서 그들에게 말을 못하니 백성들이 그가 성전 안에서 환상을 본 줄 알았더라 그가 몸짓으로 뜻을 표시하며 그냥 말 못하는대로 있더니

눅1:23 그 직무의 날이 다 되매 집으로 돌아가니라

눅1:24 이후에 그의 아내 엘리사벳이 잉태하고 다섯 달 동안 숨어 있으며 이르되

눅1:25 주께서 나를 돌보시는 날에 사람들 앞에서 내 부끄러움을 없게 하시려고 이렇게 행하심이라 하더라

눅1:26 여섯째 달에 천사 가브리엘이 하나님의 보내심을 받아 갈릴리 나사렛이란 동네에 가서

눅1:27 다윗의 자손 요셉이라 하는 사람과 약혼한 처녀에게 이르니 그 처녀의 이름은 마리아라

눅1:28 그에게 들어가 이르되 은혜를 받은 자여 평안할지어다 주께서 너와 함께 하시도다 하니

눅1:29 처녀가 그 말을 듣고 놀라 이런 인사가 어찌함인고 생각하매

눅1:30 천사가 이르되 마리아여 무서워하지 말라 네가 하나님께 은혜를 입었느니라

눅1:31 보라 네가 잉태하여 아들을 낳으리니 그 이름을 예수라 하라

눅1:32 그가 큰 자가 되고 지극히 높은신 이의 아들이라 일컬어질 것이요 주 하나님께서 그 조상 다윗의 왕위를 그에게 주시리니

눅1:33 영원히 야곱의 집을 왕으로 다스리실 것이며 그 나라가 무궁하리라

눅1:34 마리아가 천사에게 말하되 나는 남자를 알지 못하니 어찌 이 일이 있으리이까

눅1:35 천사가 대답하여 이르되 성령이 네게 임하시고 지극히 높으신 이의 능력이 너를 덮으시리니 이러므로 나실 바 거룩한 이는 하나님의 아들이라 일컬어지리라

눅1:36 보라 네 친족 엘리사벳도 늙어서 아들을 배었느니라 본래 임신하지 못한다고 알려진 이가 이미 여섯 달이 되었나니

눅1:37 대저 하나님의 모든 말씀은 능하지 못하심이 없느니라

눅1:38 마리아가 이르되 주의 여종이오니 말씀대로 내게 이루어지이다 하매 천사가 떠나가니라

욥기 13 장.

욥13:1 나의 눈이 이것을 다 보았고 나의 귀가 이것을 듣고 깨달았느니라

욥13:2 너희 아는 것을 나도 아노니 너희만 못하지 않으니라

욥13:3 참으로 나는 전능자에게 말씀하려 하며 하나님과 변론하려 하노라

욥13:4 너희는 거짓말을 지어내는 자요 다 쓸모 없는 의원이니라

욥13:5 너희가 참으로 잠잠하면 그것이 너희의 지혜일 것이니라

욥13:6 너희는 나의 변론을 들으며 내 입술의 변명을 들어 보라

욥13:7 너희가 하나님을 위하여 불의를 말하려느냐 그를 위하여 속임을 말하려느냐

욥13:8 너희가 하나님의 낯을 따르려느냐 그를 위하여 변론하려느냐

욥13:9 하나님이 너희를 감찰하시면 좋겠느냐 너희가 사람을 속임 같이 그를 속이려느냐

욥13:10 만일 너희가 몰래 낯을 따를진대 그가 반드시 책망하시리니

욥13:11 그의 존귀가 너희를 두렵게 하지 않겠으며 그의 두려움이 너희 위에 임하지 않겠느냐

욥13:12 너희의 격언은 재 같은 속담이요 너희가 방어하는 것은 토성이니라

욥13:13 너희는 잠잠하고 나를 버려두어 말하게 하라 무슨 일이 닥치든지 내가 당하리라

욥13:14 내가 어찌하여 내 살을 내 이로 물고 내 생명을 내 손에 두겠느냐

욥13:15 그가 나를 죽이시리니 내가 희망이 없노라 그러나 그의 앞에서 내 행위를 아뢰리라

욥13:16 경건하지 않은 자는 그 앞에 이르지 못하나니 이것이 나의 구원이 되리라

욥13:17 너희들은 내 말을 분명히 들으라 내가 너희 귀에 알려 줄 것이 있느니라

욥13:18 보라 내가 내 사정을 진술하였거니와 내가 정의롭다 함을 얻을 줄 아노라

욥13:19 나와 변론할 자가 누구이랴 그러면 내가 잠잠하고 기운이 끊어지리라

욥13:20 오직 내게 이 두 가지 일을 행하지 마옵소서 그리하시면 내가 주의 얼굴을 피하여 숨지 아니 하오리니

욥13:21 곧 주의 손을 내게 대지 마시오며 주의 위엄으로 나를 두렵게 하지 마실 것이니이다

욥13:22 그리하시고 주는 나를 부르소서 내가 대답하리이다 혹 내가 말씀하게 하옵시고 주는 내게 대답하옵소서

욥13:23 나의 죄악이 얼마나 많으니이까 나의 허물과 죄를 내게 알게 하옵소서

욥13:24 주께서 어찌하여 얼굴을 가리시고 나를 주의 원수로 여기시나이까

욥13:25 주께서 어찌하여 날리는 낙엽을 놀라게 하시며 마른 검불을 뒤쫓으시나이까

욥13:26 주께서 나를 대적하사 괴로운 일들을 기록하시며 내가 젊었을 때에 지은 죄를 내가 받게 하시오며

욥13:27 내 발을 차꼬에 채우시며 나의 모든 길을 살피사 내 발자취를 점검하시나이다

욥13:28 나는 썩은 물건의 낡아짐 같으며 좀 먹은 의복 같으니이다

고린도전서 1 장.

고전1:1 하나님의 뜻을 따라 그리스도 예수의 사도로 부르심을 받은 바울과 형제 소스데네는

고전1:2 고린도에 있는 하나님의 교회 곧 그리스도 예수 안에서 거룩하여지고 성도라 부르심을 받은 자들과 또 각처에서 우리의 주 곧 그들과 우리의 주 되신 예수 그리스도의 이름을 부르는 모든 자들에게

고전1:3 하나님 우리 아버지와 주 예수 그리스도로부터 은혜와 평강이 있기를 원하노라

고전1:4 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희에게 주신 하나님의 은혜로 말미암아 내가 너희를 위하여 항상 하나님께 감사하노니

고전1:5 이는 너희가 그 안에서 모든 일 곧 모든 언변과 모든 지식에 풍족하므로

고전1:6 그리스도의 증거가 너희 중에 견고하게 되어

고전1:7 너희가 모든 은사에 부족함이 없이 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 나타나심을 기다림이라

고전1:8 주께서 너희를 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 날에 책망할 것이 없는 자로 끝까지 견고하게 하시리라

고전1:9 너희를 불러 그의 아들 예수 그리스도 우리 주와 더불어 교제하게 하시는 하나님은 미쁘시도다

고전1:10 형제들아 내가 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 너희를 권하노니 모두가 같은 말을 하고 너희 가운데 분쟁이 없이 같은 마음과 같은 뜻으로 온전히 합하라

고전1:11 내 형제들아 글로에의 집 편으로 너희에게 대한 말이 내게 들리니 곧 너희 가운데 분쟁이 있다는 것이라

고전1:12 내가 이것을 말하거니와 너희가 각각 이르되 나는 바울에게, 나는 아볼로에게, 나는 게바에게, 나는 그리스도에게 속한 자라 한다는 것이니

고전1:13 그리스도께서 어찌 나뉘었느냐 바울이 너희를 위하여 십자가에 못 박혔으며 바울의 이름으로 너희가 세례를 받았느냐

고전1:14 나는 그리스보와 가이오 외에는 너희 중 아무에게도 내가 세례를 베풀지 아니한 것을 감사하노니

고전1:15 이는 아무도 나의 이름으로 세례를 받았다 말하지 못하게 하려 함이라

고전1:16 내가 또한 스데바나 집 사람에게 세례를 베풀었고 그 외에는 다른 누구에게 세례를 베풀었는지 알지 못하노라

고전1:17 그리스도께서 나를 보내심은 세례를 베풀게 하려 하심이 아니요 오직 복음을 전하게 하려 하심이로되 말의 지혜로 하지 아니함은 그리스도의 십자가가 헛되지 않게 하려 함이라

고전1:18 십자가의 도가 멸망하는 자들에게는 미련한 것이요 구원을 받는 우리에게는 하나님의 능력이라

고전1:19 기록된 바 내가 지혜 있는 자들의 지혜를 멸하고 총명한 자들의 총명을 폐하리라 하였으니

고전1:20 지혜 있는 자가 어디 있느냐 선비가 어디 있느냐 이 세대에 변론가가 어디 있느냐 하나님께서 이 세상의 지혜를 미련하게 하신 것이 아니냐

고전1:21 하나님의 지혜에 있어서는 이 세상이 자기 지혜로 하나님을 알지 못하므로 하나님께서 전도의 미련한 것으로 믿는 자들을 구원하시기를 기뻐하셨도다

고전1:22 유대인은 표적을 구하고 헬라인은 지혜를 찾으나

고전1:23 우리는 십자가에 못 박힌 그리스도를 전하니 유대인에게는 거리끼는 것이요 이방인에게는 미련한 것이로되

고전1:24 오직 부르심을 받은 자들에게는 유대인이나 헬라인이나 그리스도는 하나님의 능력이요 하나님의 지혜니라

고전1:25 하나님의 어리석음이 사람보다 지혜롭고 하나님의 약하심이 사람보다 강하니라

고전1:26 형제들아 너희를 부르심을 보라 육체를 따라 지혜로운 자가 많지 아니하며 능한 자가 많지 아니하며 문벌 좋은 자가 많지 아니하도다

고전1:27 그러나 하나님께서 세상의 미련한 것들을 택하사 지혜 있는 자들을 부끄럽게 하려 하시고 세상의 약한 것들을 택하사 강한 것들을 부끄럽게 하려 하시며

고전1:28 하나님께서 세상의 천한 것들과 멸시 받는 것들과 없는 것들을 택하사 있는 것들을 폐하려 하시나니

고전1:29 이는 아무 육체도 하나님 앞에서 자랑하지 못하게 하려 하심이라

고전1:30 너희는 하나님으로부터 나서 그리스도 예수 안에 있고 예수는 하나님으로부터 나와서 우리에게 지혜와 의로움과 거룩함과 구원함이 되셨으니

고전1:31 기록된 바 자랑하는 자는 주 안에서 자랑하라 함과 같게 하려 함이라

Genesis 47.

47:1 Joseph went and told Pharaoh, "My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan and are now in Goshen."

47:2 He chose five of his brothers and presented them before Pharaoh.

47:3 Pharaoh asked the brothers, "What is your occupation?" "Your servants are shepherds," they replied to Pharaoh, "just as our fathers were."

47:4 They also said to him, "We have come to live here awhile, because the famine is severe in Canaan and your servants' flocks have no pasture. So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen."

47:5 Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Your father and your brothers have come to you,

47:6 and the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability, put them in charge of my own livestock."

47:7 Then Joseph brought his father Jacob in and presented him before Pharaoh. After Jacob blessed Pharaoh,

47:8 Pharaoh asked him, "How old are you?"

47:9 And Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty. My years have been few and difficult, and they do not equal the years of the pilgrimage of my fathers."

47:10 Then Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from his presence.

47:11 So Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land, the district of Rameses, as Pharaoh directed.

47:12 Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father's household with food, according to the number of their children.

47:13 There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine.

47:14 Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying, and he brought it to Pharaoh's palace.

47:15 When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone, all Egypt came to Joseph and said, "Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes? Our money is used up."

47:16 "Then bring your livestock," said Joseph. "I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone."

47:17 So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys. And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock.

47:18 When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, "We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone and our livestock belongs to you, there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land.

47:19 Why should we perish before your eyes--we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh. Give us seed so that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become desolate."

47:20 So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe for them. The land became Pharaoh's,

47:21 and Joseph reduced the people to servitude, from one end of Egypt to the other.

47:22 However, he did not buy the land of the priests, because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land.

47:23 Joseph said to the people, "Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed for you so you can plant the ground.

47:24 But when the crop comes in, give a fifth of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children."

47:25 "You have saved our lives," they said. "May we find favor in the eyes of our lord; we will be in bondage to Pharaoh."

47:26 So Joseph established it as a law concerning land in Egypt--still in force today--that a fifth of the produce belongs to Pharaoh. It was only the land of the priests that did not become Pharaoh's.

47:27 Now the Israelites settled in Egypt in the region of Goshen. They acquired property there and were fruitful and increased greatly in number.

47:28 Jacob lived in Egypt seventeen years, and the years of his life were a hundred and forty-seven.

47:29 When the time drew near for Israel to die, he called for his son Joseph and said to him, "If I have found favor in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh and promise that you will show me kindness and faithfulness. Do not bury me in Egypt,

47:30 but when I rest with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and bury me where they are buried." "I will do as you say," he said.

47:31 "Swear to me," he said. Then Joseph swore to him, and Israel worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.

Luke 1 1-38.

1:1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,

1:2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word.

1:3 Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,

1:4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.

1:5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron.

1:6 Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commandments and regulations blamelessly.

1:7 But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren; and they were both well along in years.

1:8 Once when Zechariah's division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,

1:9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.

1:10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.

1:11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.

1:12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.

1:13 But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John.

1:14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,

1:15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from birth.

1:16 Many of the people of Israel will he bring back to the Lord their God.

1:17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous--to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."

1:18 Zechariah asked the angel, "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years."

1:19 The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.

1:20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their proper time."

1:21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple.

1:22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.

1:23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home.

1:24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion.

1:25 "The Lord has done this for me," she said. "In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people."

1:26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee,

1:27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary.

1:28 The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you."

1:29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

1:30 But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God.

1:31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.

1:32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,

1:33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."

1:34 "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"

1:35 The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

1:36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month.

1:37 For nothing is impossible with God."

1:38 "I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her.

Job 13.

13:1 "My eyes have seen all this, my ears have heard and understood it.

13:2 What you know, I also know; I am not inferior to you.

13:3 But I desire to speak to the Almighty and to argue my case with God.

13:4 You, however, smear me with lies; you are worthless physicians, all of you!

13:5 If only you would be altogether silent! For you, that would be wisdom.

13:6 Hear now my argument; listen to the plea of my lips.

13:7 Will you speak wickedly on God's behalf? Will you speak deceitfully for him?

13:8 Will you show him partiality? Will you argue the case for God?

13:9 Would it turn out well if he examined you? Could you deceive him as you might deceive men?

13:10 He would surely rebuke you if you secretly showed partiality.

13:11 Would not his splendor terrify you? Would not the dread of him fall on you?

13:12 Your maxims are proverbs of ashes; your defenses are defenses of clay.

13:13 "Keep silent and let me speak; then let come to me what may.

13:14 Why do I put myself in jeopardy and take my life in my hands?

13:15 Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him; I will surely defend my ways to his face.

13:16 Indeed, this will turn out for my deliverance, for no godless man would dare come before him!

13:17 Listen carefully to my words; let your ears take in what I say.

13:18 Now that I have prepared my case, I know I will be vindicated.

13:19 Can anyone bring charges against me? If so, I will be silent and die.

13:20 "Only grant me these two things, O God, and then I will not hide from you:

13:21 Withdraw your hand far from me, and stop frightening me with your terrors.

13:22 Then summon me and I will answer, or let me speak, and you reply.

13:23 How many wrongs and sins have I committed? Show me my offense and my sin.

13:24 Why do you hide your face and consider me your enemy?

13:25 Will you torment a windblown leaf? Will you chase after dry chaff?

13:26 For you write down bitter things against me and make me inherit the sins of my youth.

13:27 You fasten my feet in shackles; you keep close watch on all my paths by putting marks on the soles of my feet.

13:28 "So man wastes away like something rotten, like a garment eaten by moths.

1 Corinthians 1.

1:1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,

1:2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ--their Lord and ours:

1:3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

1:4 I always thank God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus.

1:5 For in him you have been enriched in every way--in all your speaking and in all your knowledge--

1:6 because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you.

1:7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.

1:8 He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1:9 God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.

1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.

1:11 My brothers, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you.

1:12 What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas"; still another, "I follow Christ."

1:13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul?

1:14 I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius,

1:15 so no one can say that you were baptized into my name.

1:16 (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't remember if I baptized anyone else.)

1:17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel--not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

1:19 For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."

1:20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

1:21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

1:22 Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom,

1:23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,

1:24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

1:25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength.

1:26 Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.

1:27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

1:28 He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things--and the things that are not--to nullify the things that are,

1:29 so that no one may boast before him.

1:30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.

1:31 Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."
