창세기 39 장.

창39:1 요셉이 이끌려 애굽에 내려가매 바로의 신하 친위대장 애굽 사람 보디발이 그를 그리로 데려간 이스마엘 사람의 손에서 요셉을 사니라

창39:2 여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하시므로 그가 형통한 자가 되어 그의 주인 애굽 사람의 집에 있으니

창39:3 그의 주인이 여호와께서 그와 함께 하심을 보며 또 여호와께서 그의 범사에 형통하게 하심을 보았더라

창39:4 요셉이 그의 주인에게 은혜를 입어 섬기매 그가 요셉을 가정 총무로 삼고 자기의 소유를 다 그의 손에 위탁하니

창39:5 그가 요셉에게 자기의 집과 그의 모든 소유물을 주관하게 한 때부터 여호와께서 요셉을 위하여 그 애굽 사람의 집에 복을 내리시므로 여호와의 복이 그의 집과 밭에 있는 모든 소유에 미친지라

창39:6 주인이 그의 소유를 다 요셉의 손에 위탁하고 자기가 먹는 음식 외에는 간섭하지 아니하였더라 요셉은 용모가 빼어나고 아름다웠더라

창39:7 그 후에 그의 주인의 아내가 요셉에게 눈짓하다가 동침하기를 청하니

창39:8 요셉이 거절하며 자기 주인의 아내에게 이르되 내 주인이 집안의 모든 소유를 간섭하지 아니하고 다 내 손에 위탁하였으니

창39:9 이 집에는 나보다 큰 이가 없으며 주인이 아무 것도 내게 금하지 아니하였어도 금한 것은 당신뿐이니 당신은 그의 아내임이라 그런즉 내가 어찌 이 큰 악을 행하여 하나님께 죄를 지으리이까

창39:10 여인이 날마다 요셉에게 청하였으나 요셉이 듣지 아니하여 동침하지 아니할뿐더러 함께 있지도 아니하니라

창39:11 그러할 때에 요셉이 그의 일을 하러 그 집에 들어갔더니 그 집사람들은 하나도 거기에 없었더라

창39:12 그 여인이 그의 옷을 잡고 이르되 나와 동침하자 그러나 요셉이 자기의 옷을 그 여인의 손에 버려 두고 밖으로 나가매

창39:13 그 여인이 요셉이 그의 옷을 자기 손에 버려 두고 도망하여 나감을 보고

창39:14 그 여인의 집사람들을 불러서 그들에게 이르되 보라 주인이 히브리 사람을 우리에게 데려다가 우리를 희롱하게 하는도다 그가 나와 동침하고자 내게로 들어오므로 내가 크게 소리 질렀더니

창39:15 그가 나의 소리 질러 부름을 듣고 그의 옷을 내게 버려두고 도망하여 나갔느니라 하고

창39:16 그의 옷을 곁에 두고 자기 주인이 집으로 돌아오기를 기다려

창39:17 이 말로 그에게 말하여 이르되 당신이 우리에게 데려온 히브리 종이 나를 희롱하려고 내게로 들어왔으므로

창39:18 내가 소리 질러 불렀더니 그가 그의 옷을 내게 버려두고 밖으로 도망하여 나갔나이다

창39:19 그의 주인이 자기 아내가 자기에게 이르기를 당신의 종이 내게 이같이 행하였다 하는 말을 듣고 심히 노한지라

창39:20 이에 요셉의 주인이 그를 잡아 옥에 가두니 그 옥은 왕의 죄수를 가두는 곳이었더라 요셉이 옥에 갇혔으나

창39:21 여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하시고 그에게 인자를 더하사 간수장에게 은혜를 받게 하시매

창39:22 간수장이 옥중 죄수를 다 요셉의 손에 맡기므로 그 제반 사무를 요셉이 처리하고

창39:23 간수장은 그의 손에 맡긴 것을 무엇이든지 살펴보지 아니하였으니 이는 여호와께서 요셉과 함께 하심이라 여호와께서 그를 범사에 형통하게 하셨더라

마가복음 9 장.

막9:1 또 그들에게 이르시되 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 여기 섰는 사람 중에는 죽기 전에 하나님의 나라가 권능으로 임하는 것을 볼 자들도 있느니라 하시니라

막9:2 엿새 후에 예수께서 베드로와 야고보와 요한을 데리시고 따로 높은 산에 올라가셨더니 그들 앞에서 변형되사

막9:3 그 옷이 광채가 나며 세상에서 빨래하는 자가 그렇게 희게 할 수 없을 만큼 매우 희어졌더라

막9:4 이에 엘리야가 모세와 함께 그들에게 나타나 예수와 더불어 말하거늘

막9:5 베드로가 예수께 고하되 랍비여 우리가 여기 있는 것이 좋사오니 우리가 초막 셋을 짓되 하나는 주를 위하여, 하나는 모세를 위하여, 하나는 엘리야를 위하여 하사이다 하니

막9:6 이는 그들이 몹시 무서워하므로 그가 무슨 말을 할지 알지 못함이더라

막9:7 마침 구름이 와서 그들을 덮으며 구름 속에서 소리가 나되 이는 내 사랑하는 아들이니 너희는 그의 말을 들으라 하는지라

막9:8 문득 둘러보니 아무도 보이지 아니하고 오직 예수와 자기들뿐이었더라

막9:9 그들이 산에서 내려올 때에 예수께서 경고하시되 인자가 죽은 자 가운데서 살아날 때까지는 본 것을 아무에게도 이르지 말라 하시니

막9:10 그들이 이 말씀을 마음에 두며 서로 문의하되 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나는 것이 무엇일까 하고

막9:11 이에 예수께 묻자와 이르되 어찌하여 서기관들이 엘리야가 먼저 와야 하리라 하나이까

막9:12 이르시되 엘리야가 과연 먼저 와서 모든 것을 회복하거니와 어찌 인자에 대하여 기록하기를 많은 고난을 받고 멸시를 당하리라 하였느냐

막9:13 그러나 내가 너희에게 이르노니 엘리야가 왔으되 기록된 바와 같이 사람들이 함부로 대우하였느니라 하시니라

막9:14 이에 그들이 제자들에게 와서 보니 큰 무리가 그들을 둘러싸고 서기관들이 그들과 더불어 변론하고 있더라

막9:15 온 무리가 곧 예수를 보고 매우 놀라며 달려와 문안하거늘

막9:16 예수께서 물으시되 너희가 무엇을 그들과 변론하느냐

막9:17 무리 중의 하나가 대답하되 선생님 말 못하게 귀신 들린 내 아들을 선생님께 데려 왔나이다

막9:18 귀신이 어디서든지 그를 잡으면 거꾸러져 거품을 흘리며 이를 갈며 그리고 파리해지는지라 내가 선생님의 제자들에게 내쫓아 달라 하였으나 그들이 능히 하지 못하더이다

막9:19 대답하여 이르시되 믿음이 없는 세대여 내가 얼마나 너희와 함께 있으며 얼마나 너희에게 참으리요 그를 내게로 데려오라 하시매

막9:20 이에 데리고 오니 귀신이 예수를 보고 곧 그 아이로 심히 경련을 일으키게 하는지라 그가 땅에 엎드러져 구르며 거품을 흘리더라

막9:21 예수께서 그 아버지에게 물으시되 언제부터 이렇게 되었느냐 하시니 이르되 어릴 때부터니이다

막9:22 귀신이 그를 죽이려고 불과 물에 자주 던졌나이다 그러나 무엇을 하실 수 있거든 우리를 불쌍히 여기사 도와 주옵소서

막9:23 예수께서 이르시되 할 수 있거든이 무슨 말이냐 믿는 자에게는 능히 하지 못할 일이 없느니라 하시니

막9:24 곧 그 아이의 아버지가 소리를 질러 이르되 내가 믿나이다 나의 믿음 없는 것을 도와 주소서 하더라

막9:25 예수께서 무리가 달려와 모이는 것을 보시고 그 더러운 귀신을 꾸짖어 이르시되 말 못하고 못 듣는 귀신아 내가 네게 명하노니 그 아이에게서 나오고 다시 들어가지 말라 하시매

막9:26 귀신이 소리 지르며 아이로 심히 경련을 일으키게 하고 나가니 그 아이가 죽은 것 같이 되어 많은 사람이 말하기를 죽었다 하나

막9:27 예수께서 그 손을 잡아 일으키시니 이에 일어서니라

막9:28 집에 들어가시매 제자들이 조용히 묻자오되 우리는 어찌하여 능히 그 귀신을 쫓아내지 못하였나이까

막9:29 이르시되 기도 외에 다른 것으로는 이런 종류가 나갈 수 없느니라 하시니라

막9:30 그 곳을 떠나 갈릴리 가운데로 지날새 예수께서 아무에게도 알리고자 아니하시니

막9:31 이는 제자들을 가르치시며 또 인자가 사람들의 손에 넘겨져 죽임을 당하고 죽은 지 삼 일만에 살아나리라는 것을 말씀하셨기 때문이더라

막9:32 그러나 제자들은 이 말씀을 깨닫지 못하고 묻기도 두려워하더라

막9:33 가버나움에 이르러 집에 계실새 제자들에게 물으시되 너희가 길에서 서로 토론한 것이 무엇이냐 하시되

막9:34 그들이 잠잠하니 이는 길에서 서로 누가 크냐 하고 쟁론하였음이라

막9:35 예수께서 앉으사 열두 제자를 불러서 이르시되 누구든지 첫째가 되고자 하면 뭇 사람의 끝이 되며 뭇 사람을 섬기는 자가 되어야 하리라 하시고

막9:36 어린 아이 하나를 데려다가 그들 가운데 세우시고 안으시며 제자들에게 이르시되

막9:37 누구든지 내 이름으로 이런 어린 아이 하나를 영접하면 곧 나를 영접함이요 누구든지 나를 영접하면 나를 영접함이 아니요 나를 보내신 이를 영접함이니라

막9:38 요한이 예수께 여짜오되 선생님 우리를 따르지 않는 어떤 자가 주의 이름으로 귀신을 내쫓는 것을 우리가 보고 우리를 따르지 아니하므로 금하였나이다

막9:39 예수께서 이르시되 금하지 말라 내 이름을 의탁하여 능한 일을 행하고 즉시로 나를 비방할 자가 없느니라

막9:40 우리를 반대하지 않는 자는 우리를 위하는 자니라

막9:41 누구든지 너희가 그리스도에게 속한 자라 하여 물 한 그릇이라도 주면 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 그가 결코 상을 잃지 않으리라

막9:42 또 누구든지 나를 믿는 이 작은 자들 중 하나라도 실족하게 하면 차라리 연자맷돌이 그 목에 매여 바다에 던져지는 것이 나으리라

막9:43 만일 네 손이 너를 범죄하게 하거든 찍어버리라 장애인으로 영생에 들어가는 것이 두 손을 가지고 지옥 곧 꺼지지 않는 불에 들어가는 것보다 나으니라

막9:44 (없 음)

막9:45 만일 네 발이 너를 범죄하게 하거든 찍어버리라 다리 저는 자로 영생에 들어가는 것이 두 발을 가지고 지옥에 던져지는 것보다 나으니라

막9:46 (없 음)

막9:47 만일 네 눈이 너를 범죄하게 하거든 뻬어 버리라 한 눈으로 하나님의 나라에 들어가는 것이 두 눈을 가지고 지옥에 던져지는 것보다 나으니라

막9:48 거기에서는 구더기도 죽지 않고 불도 꺼지지 아니하느니라

막9:49 사람마다 불로써 소금 치듯 함을 받으리라

막9:50 소금은 좋은 것이로되 만일 소금이 그 맛을 잃으면 무엇으로 이를 짜게 하리요 너희 속에 소금을 두고 서로 화목하라 하시니라

욥기 5 장.

욥5:1 너는 부르짖어 보라 네게 응답할 자가 있겠느냐 거룩한 자 중에 네가 누구에게로 향하겠느냐

욥5:2 분노가 미련한 자를 죽이고 시기가 어리석은 자를 멸하느니라

욥5:3 내가 미련한 자가 뿌리 내리는 것을 보고 그의 집을 당장에 저주하였노라

욥5:4 그의 자식들은 구원에서 멀고 성문에서 억눌리나 구하는 자가 없으며

욥5:5 그가 추수한 것은 주린 자가 먹되 덫에 걸린 것도 빼앗으며 올무가 그의 재산을 향하여 입을 벌리느니라

욥5:6 재난은 티끌에서 일어나는 것이 아니며 고생은 흙에서 나는 것이 아니니라

욥5:7 사람은 고생을 위하여 났으니 불꽃이 위로 날아가는 것 같으니라

욥5:8 나라면 하나님을 찾겠고 내 일을 하나님께 의탁하리라

욥5:9 하나님은 헤아릴 수 없이 큰 일을 행하시며 기이한 일을 셀 수 없이 행하시나니

욥5:10 비를 땅에 내리시고 물을 밭에 보내시며

욥5:11 낮은 자를 높이 드시고 애곡하는 자를 일으키자 구원에 이르게 하시느니라

욥5:12 하나님은 교활한 자의 계교를 꺾으사 그들의 손이 성공하지 못하게 하시며

욥5:13 지혜로운 자가 자기의 계략에 빠지게 하시며 간교한 자의 계략을 무너뜨리시므로

욥5:14 그들은 낮에도 어두움을 만나고 대낮에도 더듬기를 밤과 같이 하느니라

욥5:15 하나님은 가난한 자를 강한 자의 칼과 그 입에서, 또한 그들의 손에서 구출하여 주시나니

욥5:16 그러므로 가난한 자가 희망이 있고 악행이 스스로 입을 다무느니라

욥5:17 볼지어다 하나님께 징계 받는 자에게는 복이 있나니 그런즉 너는 전능자의 징계를 업신여기지 말지니라

욥5:18 하나님은 아프게 하시다가 싸매시며 상하게 하시다가 그의 손으로 고치시나니

욥5:19 여섯 가지 환난에서 너를 구원하시며 일곱 가지 환난이라도 그 재앙이 네게 미치지 않게 하시며

욥5:20 기근 때에 죽음에서, 전쟁 때에 칼의 위협에서 너를 구원하실 터인즉

욥5:21 네가 혀의 채찍을 피하여 숨을 수가 있고 멸망이 올 때에도 두려워하지 아니할 것이라

욥5:22 너는 멸망과 기근을 비웃으며 들짐승을 두려워하지 말라

욥5:23 들에 있는 돌이 너와 언약을 맺겠고 들짐승이 너와 화목하게 살 것이니라

욥5:24 네가 네 장막의 평안함을 알고 네 우리를 살펴도 잃은 것이 없을 것이며

욥5:25 네 자손이 많아지며 네 후손이 땅의 풀과 같이 될 줄을 네가 알 것이라

욥5:26 네가 장수하다가 무덤에 이르리니 마치 곡식단을 제 때에 들어올림 같으니라

욥5:27 볼지어다 우리가 연구한 바가 이와 같으니 너는 들어 보라 그러면 네가 알리라

로 마 서 9 장.

롬9:1 내가 그리스도 안에서 참말을 하고 거짓말을 아니하노라 나에게 큰 근심이 있는 것과 마음에 그치지 않는 고통이 있는 것을 내 양심이 성령 안에서 나와 더불어 증거하노니

롬9:2 (앞절에 포함)

롬9:3 나의 형제 곧 골육의 친척을 위하여 내 자신이 저주를 받아 그리스도에게서 끊어질지라도 원하는 바로라

롬9:4 그들은 이스라엘 사람이라 그들에게는 양자 됨과 영광과 언약들과 율법을 세우신 것과 예배와 약속들이 있고

롬9:5 조상들도 그들의 것이요 육신으로 하면 그리스도가 그들에게서 나셨으니 그는 만물 위에 계셔서 세세에 찬양을 받으실 하나님이시니라 아멘

롬9:6 그러나 하나님의 말씀이 폐하여진 것 같지 않도다 이스라엘에게서 난 그들이 다 이스라엘이 아니요

롬9:7 또한 아브라함의 씨가 다 그의 자녀가 아니라 오직 이삭으로부터 난 자라야 네 씨라 불리리라 하셨으니

롬9:8 곧 육신의 자녀가 하나님의 자녀가 아니요 오직 약속의 자녀가 씨로 여기심을 받느니라

롬9:9 약속의 말씀은 이것이니 명년 이 때에 내가 이르리니 사라에게 아들이 있으리라 하심이라

롬9:10 그뿐 아니라 또한 리브가가 우리 조상 이삭 한 사람으로 말미암아 임신하였는데

롬9:11 그 자식들이 아직 나지도 아니하고 무슨 선이나 악을 행하지 아니한 때에 택하심을 따라 되는 하나님의 뜻이 행위로 말미암지 않고 오직 부르시는 이로 말미암아 서게 하려 하사

롬9:12 리브가에게 이르시되 큰 자가 어린 자를 섬기리라 하셨나니

롬9:13 기록된 바 내가 야곱은 사랑하고 에서는 미워하였다 하심과 같으니라

롬9:14 그런즉 우리가 무슨 말을 하리요 하나님께 불의가 있느냐 그럴 수 없느니라

롬9:15 모세에게 이르시되 내가 긍휼히 여길 자를 긍휼히 여기고 불쌍히 여길 자를 불쌍히 여기리라 하셨으니

롬9:16 그런즉 원하는 자로 말미암음도 아니요 달음박질하는 자로 말미암음도 아니요 오직 긍휼히 여기시는 하나님으로 말미암음이니라

롬9:17 성경이 바로에게 이르시되 내가 이 일을 위하여 너를 세웠으니 곧 너로 말미암아 내 능력을 보이고 내 이름이 온 땅에 전파되게 하려 함이라 하셨으니

롬9:18 그런즉 하나님께서 하고자 하시는 자를 긍휼히 여기시고 하고자 하시는 자를 완악하게하시느니라

롬9:19 혹 네가 내게 말하기를 그러면 하나님이 어찌하여 허물하시느냐 누가 그 뜻을 대적하느냐 하리니

롬9:20 이 사람아 네가 누구이기에 감히 하나님께 반문하느냐 지음을 받은 물건이 지은 자에게 어찌 나를 이같이 만들었느냐 말하겠느냐

롬9:21 토기장이가 진흙 한 덩어리로 하나는 귀히 쓸 그릇을, 하나는 천히 쓸 그릇을 만들 권한이 없느냐

롬9:22 만일 하나님이 그의 진노를 보이시고 그의 능력을 알게 하고자 하사 멸하기로 준비된 진노의 그릇을 오래 참으심으로 관용하시고

롬9:23 또한 영광 받기로 예비하신 바 긍휼의 그릇에 대하여 그 영광의 풍성함을 알게 하고자 하셨을지라도 무슨 말 하리요

롬9:24 이 그릇은 우리니 곧 유대인 중에서뿐 아니라 이방인 중에서도 부르신 자니라

롬9:25 호세아의 글에도 이르기를 내가 내 백성 아닌 자를 내 백성이라, 사랑하지 아니한 자를 사랑한 자라 부르리라

롬9:26 너희는 내 백성이 아니라 한 그 곳에서 그들이 살아 계신 하나님의 아들이라 일컬음을 받으리라 함과 같으니라

롬9:27 또 이사야가 이스라엘에 관하여 외치되 이스라엘 자손들의 수가 비록 바다의 모래 같을지라도 남은 자만 구원을 받으리니

롬9:28 주께서 땅 위에서 그 말씀을 이루고 속히 시행하시리라 하셨느니라

롬9:29 또한 이사야가 미리 말한 바 만일 만군의 주께서 우리에게 씨를 남겨 두지 아니하셨더라면 우리가 소돔과 같이 되고 고모라와 같았으리로다 함과 같으니라

롬9:30 그런즉 우리가 무슨 말을 하리요 의를 따르지 아니한 이방인들이 의를 얻었으니 곧 믿음에서 난 의요

롬9:31 의의 법을 따라간 이스라엘은 율법에 이르지 못하였으니

롬9:32 어찌 그러하냐 이는 그들이 믿음을 의지하지 않고 행위를 의지함이라 부딪칠 돌에 부딪쳤느니라

롬9:33 기록된 바 보라 내가 걸림돌과 거치는 바위를 시온에 두노니 그를 믿는 자는 부끄러움을 당하지 아니하리라 함과 같으니라

Genesis 39.

39:1 Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt. Potiphar, an Egyptian who was one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had taken him there.

39:2 The LORD was with Joseph and he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.

39:3 When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD gave him success in everything he did,

39:4 Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant. Potiphar put him in charge of his household, and he entrusted to his care everything he owned.

39:5 From the time he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian because of Joseph. The blessing of the LORD was on everything Potiphar had, both in the house and in the field.

39:6 So he left in Joseph's care everything he had; with Joseph in charge, he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome,

39:7 and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, "Come to bed with me!"

39:8 But he refused. "With me in charge," he told her, "my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.

39:9 No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?"

39:10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her.

39:11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties, and none of the household servants was inside.

39:12 She caught him by his cloak and said, "Come to bed with me!" But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.

39:13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house,

39:14 she called her household servants. "Look," she said to them, "this Hebrew has been brought to us to make sport of us! He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed.

39:15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house."

39:16 She kept his cloak beside her until his master came home.

39:17 Then she told him this story: "That Hebrew slave you brought us came to me to make sport of me.

39:18 But as soon as I screamed for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house."

39:19 When his master heard the story his wife told him, saying, "This is how your slave treated me," he burned with anger.

39:20 Joseph's master took him and put him in prison, the place where the king's prisoners were confined. But while Joseph was there in the prison,

39:21 the LORD was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.

39:22 So the warden put Joseph in charge of all those held in the prison, and he was made responsible for all that was done there.

39:23 The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph's care, because the LORD was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.

Mark 9.

9:1 And he said to them, "I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."

9:2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them.

9:3 His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them.

9:4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

9:5 Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."

9:6 (He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)

9:7 Then a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud: "This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!"

9:8 Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.

9:9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

9:10 They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what "rising from the dead" meant.

9:11 And they asked him, "Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?"

9:12 Jesus replied, "To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected?

9:13 But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him."

9:14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them.

9:15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.

9:16 "What are you arguing with them about?" he asked.

9:17 A man in the crowd answered, "Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech.

9:18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not."

9:19 "O unbelieving generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me."

9:20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.

9:21 Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has he been like this?" "From childhood," he answered.

9:22 "It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us."

9:23 "'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes."

9:24 Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"

9:25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the evil spirit. "You deaf and mute spirit," he said, "I command you, come out of him and never enter him again."

9:26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, "He's dead."

9:27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.

9:28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"

9:29 He replied, "This kind can come out only by prayer."

9:30 They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were,

9:31 because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise."

9:32 But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it.

9:33 They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, "What were you arguing about on the road?"

9:34 But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.

9:35 Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all."

9:36 He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them,

9:37 "Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me."

9:38 "Teacher," said John, "we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us."

9:39 "Do not stop him," Jesus said. "No one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me,

9:40 for whoever is not against us is for us.

9:41 I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not lose his reward.

9:42 "And if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around his neck.

9:43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out.

9:44

9:45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.

9:46

9:47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,

9:48 where "'their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.'

9:49 Everyone will be salted with fire.

9:50 "Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with each other."

Job 5.

5:1 "Call if you will, but who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn?

5:2 Resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple.

5:3 I myself have seen a fool taking root, but suddenly his house was cursed.

5:4 His children are far from safety, crushed in court without a defender.

5:5 The hungry consume his harvest, taking it even from among thorns, and the thirsty pant after his wealth.

5:6 For hardship does not spring from the soil, nor does trouble sprout from the ground.

5:7 Yet man is born to trouble as surely as sparks fly upward.

5:8 "But if it were I, I would appeal to God; I would lay my cause before him.

5:9 He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted.

5:10 He bestows rain on the earth; he sends water upon the countryside.

5:11 The lowly he sets on high, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.

5:12 He thwarts the plans of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success.

5:13 He catches the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are swept away.

5:14 Darkness comes upon them in the daytime; at noon they grope as in the night.

5:15 He saves the needy from the sword in their mouth; he saves them from the clutches of the powerful.

5:16 So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth.

5:17 "Blessed is the man whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.

5:18 For he wounds, but he also binds up; he injures, but his hands also heal.

5:19 From six calamities he will rescue you; in seven no harm will befall you.

5:20 In famine he will ransom you from death, and in battle from the stroke of the sword.

5:21 You will be protected from the lash of the tongue, and need not fear when destruction comes.

5:22 You will laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear the beasts of the earth.

5:23 For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you.

5:24 You will know that your tent is secure; you will take stock of your property and find nothing missing.

5:25 You will know that your children will be many, and your descendants like the grass of the earth.

5:26 You will come to the grave in full vigor, like sheaves gathered in season.

5:27 "We have examined this, and it is true. So hear it and apply it to yourself."

Romans 9.

9:1 I speak the truth in Christ--I am not lying, my conscience confirms it in the Holy Spirit--

9:2 I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.

9:3 For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, those of my own race,

9:4 the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises.

9:5 Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen.

9:6 It is not as though God's word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.

9:7 Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham's children. On the contrary, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned."

9:8 In other words, it is not the natural children who are God's children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham's offspring.

9:9 For this was how the promise was stated: "At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son."

9:10 Not only that, but Rebekah's children had one and the same father, our father Isaac.

9:11 Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad--in order that God's purpose in election might stand:

9:12 not by works but by him who calls--she was told, "The older will serve the younger."

9:13 Just as it is written: "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."

9:14 What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all!

9:15 For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion."

9:16 It does not, therefore, depend on man's desire or effort, but on God's mercy.

9:17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: "I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth."

9:18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.

9:19 One of you will say to me: "Then why does God still blame us? For who resists his will?"

9:20 But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? "Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, 'Why did you make me like this?'"

9:21 Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?

9:22 What if God, choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath--prepared for destruction?

9:23 What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory--

9:24 even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?

9:25 As he says in Hosea: "I will call them 'my people' who are not my people; and I will call her 'my loved one' who is not my loved one,"

9:26 and, "It will happen that in the very place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' they will be called 'sons of the living God.'"

9:27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: "Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea, only the remnant will be saved.

9:28 For the Lord will carry out his sentence on earth with speed and finality."

9:29 It is just as Isaiah said previously: "Unless the Lord Almighty had left us descendants, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah."

9:30 What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith;

9:31 but Israel, who pursued a law of righteousness, has not attained it.

9:32 Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the "stumbling stone."

9:33 As it is written: "See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."
