창세기 37 장.

창37:1 야곱이 가나안 땅 곧 그의 아버지가 거류하던 땅에 거주하였으니

창37:2 야곱의 족보는 이러하니라 요셉이 십칠 세의 소년으로서 그의 형들과 함께 양을 칠 때에 그의 아버지의 아내들 빌하와 실바의 아들들과 더불어 함께 있었더니 그가 그들의 잘못을 아버지에게 말하더라

창37:3 요셉은 노년에 얻은 아들이므로 이스라엘이 여러 아들들보다 그를 더 사랑하므로 그를 위하여 채색옷을 지었더니

창37:4 그의 형들이 아버지가 형들보다 그를 더 사랑함을 보고 그를 미워하여 그에게 편안하게 말할 수 없었더라

창37:5 요셉이 꿈을 꾸고 자기 형들에게 말하매 그들이 그를 더욱 미워하였더라

창37:6 요셉이 그들에게 이르되 청하건대 내가 꾼 꿈을 들으시오

창37:7 우리가 밭에서 곡식 단을 묶더니 내 단은 일어서고 당신들의 단은 내 단을 둘러서서 절하더이다

창37:8 그의 형들이 그에게 이르되 네가 참으로 우리의 왕이 되겠느냐 참으로 우리를 다스리게 되겠느냐 하고 그의 꿈과 그의 말로 말미암아 그를 더욱 미워하더니

창37:9 요셉이 다시 꿈을 꾸고 그의 형들에게 말하여 이르되 내가 또 꿈을 꾼즉 해와 달과 열한 별이 내게 절하더이다 하니라

창37:10 그가 그의 꿈을 아버지와 형들에게 말하매 아버지가 그를 꾸짖고 그에게 이르되 네가 꾼 꿈이 무엇이냐 나와 네 어머니와 네 형들이 참으로 가서 땅에 엎드려 네게 절하겠느냐

창37:11 그의 형들은 시기하되 그의 아버지는 그 말을 간직해 두었더라

창37:12 그의 형들이 세겜에 가서 아버지의 양 떼를 칠 때에

창37:13 이스라엘이 요셉에게 이르되 네 형들이 세겜에서 양을 치지 아니하느냐 너를 그들에게로 보내리라 요셉이 아버지에게 대답하되 내가 그리하겠나이다

창37:14 이스라엘이 그에게 이르되 가서 네 형들과 양 떼가 다 잘 있는지를 보고 돌아와 내게 말하라 하고 그를 헤브론 골짜기에서 보내니 그가 세겜으로 가니라

창37:15 어떤 사람이 그를 만난즉 그가 들에서 방황하는지라 그 사람이 그에게 물어 이르되 네가 무엇을 찾느냐

창37:16 그가 이르되 내가 내 형들을 찾으오니 청하건대 그들이 양치는 곳을 내게 가르쳐 주소서

창37:17 그 사람이 이르되 그들이 여기서 떠났느니라 내가 그들의 말을 들으니 도단으로 가자 하더라 하니라 요셉이 그의 형들의 뒤를 따라 가서 도단에서 그들을 만나니라

창37:18 요셉이 그들에게 가까이 오기 전에 그들이 요셉을 멀리서 보고 죽이기를 꾀하여

창37:19 서로 이르되 꿈꾸는 자가 오는 도다

창37:20 자, 그를 죽여 한 구덩이에 던지고 우리가 말하기를 악한 짐승이 그를 잡아먹었다 하자 그의 꿈이 어떻게 되는지를 우리가 볼 것이니라 하는지라

창37:21 르우벤이 듣고 요셉을 그들의 손에서 구원하려 하여 이르되 우리가 그의 생명은 해치지 말자

창37:22 르우벤이 또 그들에게 이르되 피를 흘리지 말라 그를 광야 그 구덩이에 던지고 손을 그에게 대지 말라 하니 이는 그가 요셉을 그들의 손에서 구출하여 그의 아버지에게로 돌려보내려 함이었더라

창37:23 요셉이 형들에게 이르매 그의 형들이 요셉의 옷 곧 그가 입은 채색옷을 벗기고

창37:24 그를 잡아 구덩이에 던지니 그 구덩이는 빈 것이라 그 속에 물이 없었더라

창37:25 그들이 앉아 음식을 먹다가 눈을 들어본즉 한 무리의 이스마엘 사람들이 길르앗에서 오는데 그 낙타들에 향품과 유향과 몰약을 싣고 애굽으로 내려가는지라

창37:26 유다가 자기 형제에게 이르되 우리가 우리 동생을 죽이고 그의 피를 덮어둔들 무엇이 유익할까

창37:27 자 그를 이스마엘 사람들에게 팔고 그에게 우리 손을 대지 말자 그는 우리의 동생이요 우리의 혈육이니라 하매 그의 형들이 청종하였더라

창37:28 그 때에 미디안 사람 상인들이 지나가고 있는지라 형들이 요셉을 구덩이에서 끌어올리고 은 이십에 그를 이스마엘 사람들에게 팔매 그 상인들이 요셉을 데리고 애굽으로 갔더라

창37:29 르우벤이 돌아와 구덩이에 이르러 본즉 거기 요셉이 없는지라 옷을 찢고

창37:30 아우들에게로 되돌아와서 이르되 아이가 없도다 나는 어디로 갈까

창37:31 그들이 요셉의 옷을 가져다가 숫염소를 죽여 그 옷을 피에 적시고

창37:32 그의 채색옷을 보내어 그의 아버지에게로 가지고 가서 이르기를 우리가 이것을 발견하였으니 아버지 아들의 옷인가 보소서 하매

창37:33 아버지가 그것을 알아보고 이르되 내 아들의 옷이라 악한 짐승이 그를 잡아 먹었도다 요셉이 분명히 찢겼도다 하고

창37:34 자기 옷을 찢고 굵은 베로 허리를 묶고 오래도록 그의 아들을 위하여 애통하니

창37:35 그의 모든 자녀가 위로하되 그가 그 위로를 받지 아니하여 이르되 내가 슬퍼하며 스올로 내려가 아들에게로 가리라 하고 그의 아버지가 그를 위하여 울었더라

창37:36 그 미디안 사람들은 그를 애굽에서 바로의 신하 친위대장 보디발에게 팔았더라

마가복음 7 장.

막7:1 바리새인들과 또 서기관 중 몇이 예루살렘에서 와서 예수께 모여들었다가

막7:2 그의 제자 중 몇 사람이 부정한 손 곧 씻지 아니한 손으로 떡 먹는 것을 보았더라

막7:3 (바리새인들과 모든 유대인들은 장로들의 전통을 지키어 손을 잘 씻지 않고서는 음식을 먹지 아니하며

막7:4 또 시장에서 돌아와서도 물을 뿌리지 않고서는 먹지 아니하며 그 외에도 여러 가지를 지키어 오는 것이 있으니 잔과 주발과 놋그릇을 씻음이러라)

막7:5 이에 바리새인들과 서기관들이 예수께 묻되 어찌하여 당신의 제자들은 장로들의 전통을 준행하지 아니하고 부정한 손으로 떡을 먹나이까

막7:6 이르시되 이사야가 너희 외식하는 자에 대하여 잘 예언하였도다 기록하였으되 이 백성이 입술로는 나를 공경하되 마음은 내게서 멀도다

막7:7 사람의 계명으로 교훈을 삼아 가르치니 나를 헛되이 경배하는도다 하였느니라

막7:8 너희가 하나님의 계명은 버리고 사람의 전통을 지키느니라

막7:9 또 이르시되 너희가 너희 전통을 지키려고 하나님의 계명을 잘 저버리는도다

막7:10 모세는 네 부모를 공경하라 하고 또 아버지나 어머니를 모욕하는 자는 죽임을 당하리라 하였거늘

막7:11 너희는 이르되 사람이 아버지에게나 어머니에게나 말하기를 내가 드려 유익하게 할 것이 고르반 곧 하나님께 드림이 되었다고 하기만 하면 그만이라 하고

막7:12 자기 아버지나 어머니에게 다시 아무 것도 하여 드리기를 허락하지 아니하여

막7:13 너희가 전한 전통으로 하나님의 말씀을 폐하며 또 이같은 일을 많이 행하느니라 하시고

막7:14 무리를 다시 불러 이르시되 너희는 다 내 말을 듣고 깨달으라

막7:15 무엇이든지 밖에서 사람에게로 들어가는 것은 능히 사람을 더럽게 하지 못하되

막7:16 사람 안에서 나오는 것이 사람을 더럽게 하는 것이니라 하시고

막7:17 무리를 떠나 집으로 들어가시니 제자들이 그 비유를 묻자온대

막7:18 예수께서 이르시되 너희도 이렇게 깨달음이 없느냐 무엇이든지 밖에서 들어가는 것이 능히 사람을 더럽게 하지 못함을 알지 못하느냐

막7:19 이는 마음으로 들어가지 아니하고 배로 들어가 뒤로 나감이라 이러므로 모든 음식물을 깨끗하다 하시니라

막7:20 또 이르시되 사람에게서 나오는 그것이 사람을 더럽게 하느니라

막7:21 속에서 곧 사람의 마음에서 나오는 것은 악한 생각 곧 음란과 도둑질과 살인과

막7:22 간음과 탐욕과 악독과 속임과 음탕과 질투와 비방과 교만과 우매함이니

막7:23 이 모든 악한 것이 다 속에서 나와서 사람을 더럽게 하느니라

막7:24 예수께서 일어나사 거기를 떠나 두로 지방으로 가서 한 집에 들어가 아무도 모르게 하시려 하나 숨길 수 없더라

막7:25 이에 더러운 귀신 들린 어린 딸을 둔 한 여자가 예수의 소문을 듣고 곧 와서 그 발 아래에 엎드리니

막7:26 그 여자는 헬라인이요 수로보니게 족속이라 자기 딸에게서 귀신 쫓아내 주시기를 간구하거늘

막7:27 예수께서 이르시되 자녀로 먼저 배불리 먹게 할지니 자녀의 떡을 취하여 개들에게 던짐이 마땅치 아니하니라

막7:28 여자가 대답하여 이르되 주여 옳소이다마는 상 아래 개들도 아이들이 먹던 부스러기를 먹나이다

막7:29 예수께서 이르시되 이 말을 하였으니 돌아가라 귀신이 네 딸에게서 나갔느니라 하시매

막7:30 여자가 집에 돌아가 본즉 아이가 침상에 누웠고 귀신이 나갔더라

막7:31 예수께서 다시 두로 지방에서 나와 시돈을 지나고 데가볼리 지방을 통과하여 갈릴리 호수에 이르시매

막7:32 사람들이 귀 먹고 말 더듬는 자를 데리고 예수께 나아와 안수하여 주시기를 간구하거늘

막7:33 예수께서 그 사람을 따로 데리고 무리를 떠나사 손가락을 그의 양 귀에 넣고 침을 뱉어 그의 혀에 손을 대시며

막7:34 하늘을 우러러 탄식하시며 그에게 이르시되 에바다 하시니 이는 열리라는 뜻이라

막7:35 그의 귀가 열리고 혀가 맺힌 것이 곧 풀려 말이 분명하여졌더라

막7:36 예수께서 그들에게 경고하사 아무에게도 이르지 말라 하시되 경고하실수록 그들이 더욱 널리 전파하니

막7:37 사람들이 심히 놀라 이르되 그가 모든 것을 잘하였도다 못 듣는 사람도 듣게 하고 말 못하는 사람도 말하게 한다 하니라

욥기 3 장.

욥3:1 그 후에 욥이 입을 열어 자기의 생일을 열어 저주하니라

욥3:2 욥이 입을 열어 이르되

욥3:3 내가 난 날이 멸망하였더라면, 사내 아이를 배었다 하던 그 밤도 그러하였더라면,

욥3:4 그 날이 캄캄하였더라면, 하나님이 위에서 돌아보지 않으셨더라면, 빛도 그 날을 비추지 않았더라면

욥3:5 어둠과 죽음의 그늘이 그 날을 자기의 것이라 주장하였더라면, 구름이 그 위에 덮였더라면, 흑암이 그 날을 덮었더라면,

욥3:6 그 밤이 캄캄한 어둠에 잡혔더라면, 해의 날 수와 달의 수에 들지 않았더라면,

욥3:7 그 밤에 자식을 배지 못하였더라면, 그 밤에 즐거운 소리가 나지 않았더라면,

욥3:8 날을 저주하는 자들 곧 리워야단을 격동시키기에 익숙한 자들이 그 밤을 저주하였더라면,

욥3:9 그 밤에 새벽 별들이 어두웠더라면, 그 밤이 광명을 바랄지라도 얻지 못하며 동틈을 보지 못하였더라면 좋았을 것을,

욥3:10 이는 내 모태의 문을 닫지 아니 하여 내 눈으로 환난을 보게 하였음이로구나

욥3:11 어찌하여 내가 태에서 죽어 나오지 아니하였던가 어찌하여 내 어머니가 해산할 때에 내가 숨지지 아니하였던가

욥3:12 어찌하여 무릎이 나를 받았던가 어찌하여 내가 젖을 빨았던가

욥3:13 그렇지 아니하였던들 이제는 내가 평안히 누워서 자고 쉬었을 것이니

욥3:14 자기를 위하여 폐허를 일으킨 세상 임금들과 모사들과 함께 있었을 것이요

욥3:15 혹시 금을 가지며 은으로 집을 채운 고관들과 함께 있었을 것이며

욥3:16 또는 낙태되어 땅에 묻힌 아이처럼 나는 존재하지 않았겠고 빛을 보지 못한 아이들 같았을 것이라

욥3:17 거기서는 악한 자가 소요를 그치며 거기서는 피곤한 자가 쉼을 얻으며

욥3:18 거기서는 갇힌 자가 다 함께 평안히 있어 감독자의 호통 소리를 듣지 아니하며

욥3:19 거기서는 작은 자와 큰 자가 함께 있고 종이 상전에게서 놓이느니라

욥3:20 어찌하여 고난 당하는 자에게 빛을 주셨으며 마음이 아픈 자에게 생명을 주셨는고

욥3:21 이러한 자는 죽기를 바라도 오지 아니하니 땅을 파고 숨긴 보배를 찾음보다 죽음을 구하는 것을 더하다가

욥3:22 무덤을 찾아 얻으면 심히 기뻐하고 즐거워하나니

욥3:23 하나님에게 둘러 싸여 길이 아득한 사람에게 어찌하여 빛을 주셨는고

욥3:24 나는 음식 앞에서도 탄식이 나며 내가 앓는 소리는 물이 쏟아지는 소리 같구나

욥3:25 내가 두려워하는 그것이 내게 임하고 내가 무서워하는 그것이 내 몸에 미쳤구나

욥3:26 나에게는 평온도 없고 안일도 없고 휴식도 없고 다만 불안만이 있구나

로 마 서 7 장.

롬7:1 형제들아 내가 법 아는 자들에게 말하노니 너희는 그 법이 사람이 살 동안만 그를 주관하는 줄 알지 못하느냐

롬7:2 남편 있는 여인이 그 남편 생전에는 법으로 그에게 매인 바 되나 만일 그 남편이 죽으면 남편의 법에서 벗어나느니라

롬7:3 그러므로 만일 그 남편 생전에 다른 남자에게 가면 음녀라 그러나 만일 남편이 죽으면 그 법에서 자유롭게 되나니 다른 남자에게 갈지라도 음녀가 되지 아니하느니라

롬7:4 그러므로 내 형제들아 너희도 그리스도의 몸으로 말미암아 율법에 대하여 죽임을 당하였으니 이른 다른 이 곧 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나신 이에게 가서 우리가 하나님을 위하여 열매를 맺게 하려 함이라

롬7:5 우리가 육신에 있을 때에는 율법으로 말미암는 죄의 정욕이 우리 지체 중에 역사하여 우리로 사망을 위하여 열매를 맺게 하였더니

롬7:6 이제는 우리가 얽매였던 것에 대하여 죽었으므로 율법에서 벗어났으니 이러므로 우리가 영의 새로운 것으로 섬길 것이요 율법 조문의 묵은 것으로 아니할지니라

롬7:7 그런즉 우리가 무슨 말을 하리요 율법이 죄냐 그럴 수 없느니라 율법으로 말미암지 않고는 내가 죄를 알지 못하였으니 곧 율법이 탐내지 말라 하지 아니하였더라면 내가 탐심을 알지 못하였으리라

롬7:8 그러나 죄가 기회를 타서 계명으로 말미암아 내 속에서 온갖 탐심을 이루었나니 이는 율법이 없으면 죄가 죽은 것임이라

롬7:9 전에 율법을 깨닫지 못했을 때에는 내가 살았더니 계명이 이르매 죄는 살아나고 나는 죽었도다

롬7:10 생명에 이르게 할 그 계명이 내게 대하여 도리어 사망에 이르게 하는 것이 되었도다

롬7:11 죄가 기회를 타서 계명으로 말미암아 나를 속이고 그것으로 나를 죽였는지라

롬7:12 이로 보건대 율법은 거룩하고 계명도 거룩하고 의로우며 선하도다

롬7:13 그런즉 선한 것이 내게 사망이 되었느냐 그럴 수 없느니라 오직 죄가 죄로 드러나기 위하여 선한 그것으로 말미암아 나를 죽게 만들었으니 이는 계명으로 말미암아 죄로 심히 죄 되게 하려 함이라

롬7:14 우리가 율법은 신령한 줄 알거니와 나는 육신에 속하여 죄 아래에 팔렸도다

롬7:15 내가 행하는 것을 내가 알지 못하노니 곧 내가 원하는 것은 행하지 아니하고 도리어 미워하는 것을 행함이라

롬7:16 만일 내가 원하지 아니하는 그것을 행하면 내가 이로써 율법이 선한 것을 시인하노니

롬7:17 이제는 그것을 행하는 자가 내가 아니요 내 속에 거하는 죄니라

롬7:18 내 속 곧 내 육신에 선한 것이 거하지 아니하는 줄을 아노니 원함은 내게 있으나 선을 행하는 것은 없노라

롬7:19 내가 원하는 바 선은 행하지 아니하고 도리어 원하지 아니하는 바 악을 행하는도다

롬7:20 만일 내가 원하지 아니하는 그것을 하면 이를 행하는 자는 내가 아니요 내 속에 거하는 죄니라

롬7:21 그러므로 내가 한 법을 깨달았노니 곧 선을 행하기 원하는 나에게 악이 함께 있는 것이로다

롬7:22 내 속사람으로는 하나님의 법을 즐거워하되

롬7:23 내 지체 속에서 한 다른 법이 내 마음의 법과 싸워 내 지체 속에 있는 죄의 법으로 나를 사로잡는 것을 보는도다

롬7:24 오호라 나는 곤고한 사람이로다 이 사망의 몸에서 누가 나를 건져내랴

롬7:25 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님께 감사하리로다 그런즉 내 자신이 마음으로는 하나님의 법을 육신으로는 죄의 법을 섬기노라

Genesis 37.

37:1 Jacob lived in the land where his father had stayed, the land of Canaan.

37:2 This is the account of Jacob. Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.

37:3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made a richly ornamented robe for him.

37:4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.

37:5 Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.

37:6 He said to them, "Listen to this dream I had:

37:7 We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it."

37:8 His brothers said to him, "Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?" And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.

37:9 Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. "Listen," he said, "I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me."

37:10 When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, "What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?"

37:11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.

37:12 Now his brothers had gone to graze their father's flocks near Shechem,

37:13 and Israel said to Joseph, "As you know, your brothers are grazing the flocks near Shechem. Come, I am going to send you to them." "Very well," he replied.

37:14 So he said to him, "Go and see if all is well with your brothers and with the flocks, and bring word back to me." Then he sent him off from the Valley of Hebron. When Joseph arrived at Shechem,

37:15 a man found him wandering around in the fields and asked him, "What are you looking for?"

37:16 He replied, "I'm looking for my brothers. Can you tell me where they are grazing their flocks?"

37:17 "They have moved on from here," the man answered. "I heard them say, 'Let's go to Dothan.'" So Joseph went after his brothers and found them near Dothan.

37:18 But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.

37:19 "Here comes that dreamer!" they said to each other.

37:20 "Come now, let's kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns and say that a ferocious animal devoured him. Then we'll see what comes of his dreams."

37:21 When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. "Let's not take his life," he said.

37:22 "Don't shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the desert, but don't lay a hand on him." Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father.

37:23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe--the richly ornamented robe he was wearing--

37:24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern. Now the cistern was empty; there was no water in it.

37:25 As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead. Their camels were loaded with spices, balm and myrrh, and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.

37:26 Judah said to his brothers, "What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?

37:27 Come, let's sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother, our own flesh and blood." His brothers agreed.

37:28 So when the Midianite merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern and sold him for twenty shekels of silver to the Ishmaelites, who took him to Egypt.

37:29 When Reuben returned to the cistern and saw that Joseph was not there, he tore his clothes.

37:30 He went back to his brothers and said, "The boy isn't there! Where can I turn now?"

37:31 Then they got Joseph's robe, slaughtered a goat and dipped the robe in the blood.

37:32 They took the ornamented robe back to their father and said, "We found this. Examine it to see whether it is your son's robe."

37:33 He recognized it and said, "It is my son's robe! Some ferocious animal has devoured him. Joseph has surely been torn to pieces."

37:34 Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days.

37:35 All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. "No," he said, "in mourning will I go down to the grave to my son." So his father wept for him.

37:36 Meanwhile, the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials, the captain of the guard.

Mark 7.

7:1 The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus and

7:2 saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were "unclean," that is, unwashed.

7:3 (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.

7:4 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.)

7:5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with 'unclean' hands?"

7:6 He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: "'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

7:7 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'

7:8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to the traditions of men."

7:9 And he said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!

7:10 For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.'

7:11 But you say that if a man says to his father or mother: 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is Corban' (that is, a gift devoted to God),

7:12 then you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.

7:13 Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that."

7:14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand this.

7:15 Nothing outside a man can make him 'unclean' by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him 'unclean.'"

7:16

7:17 After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable.

7:18 "Are you so dull?" he asked. "Don't you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him 'unclean'?

7:19 For it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body." (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods "clean.")

7:20 He went on: "What comes out of a man is what makes him 'unclean.'

7:21 For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery,

7:22 greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.

7:23 All these evils come from inside and make a man 'unclean.'"

7:24 Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret.

7:25 In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an evil spirit came and fell at his feet.

7:26 The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

7:27 "First let the children eat all they want," he told her, "for it is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs."

7:28 "Yes, Lord," she replied, "but even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs."

7:29 Then he told her, "For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter."

7:30 She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

7:31 Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee and into the region of the Decapolis.

7:32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk, and they begged him to place his hand on the man.

7:33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man's ears. Then he spit and touched the man's tongue.

7:34 He looked up to heaven and with a deep sigh said to him, "Ephphatha!" (which means, "Be opened!").

7:35 At this, the man's ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.

7:36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it.

7:37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. "He has done everything well," they said. "He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak."

Job 3.

3:1 After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.

3:2 He said:

3:3 "May the day of my birth perish, and the night it was said, 'A boy is born!'

3:4 That day--may it turn to darkness; may God above not care about it; may no light shine upon it.

3:5 May darkness and deep shadow claim it once more; may a cloud settle over it; may blackness overwhelm its light.

3:6 That night--may thick darkness seize it; may it not be included among the days of the year nor be entered in any of the months.

3:7 May that night be barren; may no shout of joy be heard in it.

3:8 May those who curse days curse that day, those who are ready to rouse Leviathan.

3:9 May its morning stars become dark; may it wait for daylight in vain and not see the first rays of dawn,

3:10 for it did not shut the doors of the womb on me to hide trouble from my eyes.

3:11 "Why did I not perish at birth, and die as I came from the womb?

3:12 Why were there knees to receive me and breasts that I might be nursed?

3:13 For now I would be lying down in peace; I would be asleep and at rest

3:14 with kings and counselors of the earth, who built for themselves places now lying in ruins,

3:15 with rulers who had gold, who filled their houses with silver.

3:16 Or why was I not hidden in the ground like a stillborn child, like an infant who never saw the light of day?

3:17 There the wicked cease from turmoil, and there the weary are at rest.

3:18 Captives also enjoy their ease; they no longer hear the slave driver's shout.

3:19 The small and the great are there, and the slave is freed from his master.

3:20 "Why is light given to those in misery, and life to the bitter of soul,

3:21 to those who long for death that does not come, who search for it more than for hidden treasure,

3:22 who are filled with gladness and rejoice when they reach the grave?

3:23 Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?

3:24 For sighing comes to me instead of food; my groans pour out like water.

3:25 What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me.

3:26 I have no peace, no quietness; I have no rest, but only turmoil."

Romans 7.

7:1 Do you not know, brothers--for I am speaking to men who know the law--that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives?

7:2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.

7:3 So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man.

7:4 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.

7:5 For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death.

7:6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

7:7 What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, "Do not covet."

7:8 But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from law, sin is dead.

7:9 Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.

7:10 I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death.

7:11 For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death.

7:12 So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good.

7:13 Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! But in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful.

7:14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.

7:15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

7:16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.

7:17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.

7:18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

7:19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do--this I keep on doing.

7:20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

7:21 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

7:22 For in my inner being I delight in God's law;

7:23 but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.

7:24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?

7:25 Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.
