창세기 34 장.

창34:1 레아가 야곱에게 낳은 딸 디나가 그 땅의 딸들을 보러 나갔더니

창34:2 히위 족속 중 하몰의 아들 그 땅의 추장 세겜이 그를 보고 끌어들여 강간하여 욕되게 하고

창34:3 그 마음이 깊이 야곱의 딸 디나에게 연연하며 그 소녀를 사랑하여 그의 마음을 말로 위로하고

창34:4 그의 아버지 하몰에게 청하여 이르되 이 소녀를 내 아내로 얻게 하여 주소서 하였더라

창34:5 야곱이 그 딸 디나를 그가 더럽혔다 함을 들었으나 자기의 아들들이 들에서 목축하므로 그들이 돌아오기까지 잠잠하였고

창34:6 세겜의 아버지 하몰은 야곱에게 말하러 왔으며

창34:7 야곱의 아들들은 들에서 이를 듣고 돌아와서 그들 모두가 근심하고 심히 노하였으니 이는 세겜이 야곱의 딸을 강간하여 이스라엘에게 부끄러운 일 곧 행하지 못할 일을 행하였음이더라

창34:8 하몰이 그들에게 이르되 내 아들 세겜이 마음으로 너희 딸을 연연하여 하니 원하건대 그를 세겜에게 주어 아내로 삼게 하라

창34:9 너희가 우리와 통혼하여 너희 딸을 우리에게 주며 우리 딸을 너희가 데려가고

창34:10 너희가 우리와 함께 거주하되 땅이 너희 앞에 있으니 여기 머물러 매매하며 여기서 기업을 얻으라 하고

창34:11 세겜도 디나의 아버지와 그의 남자 형제들에게 이르되 나로 너희에게 은혜를 입게 하라 너희가 내게 말하는 것은 내가 다 주리니

창34:12 이 소녀만 내게 주어 아내가 되게 하라 아무리 큰 혼수와 예물을 청할지라도 너희가 내게 말한 대로 주리라

창34:13 야곱의 아들들이 세겜과 그의 아버지 하몰에게 속여 대답하였으니 이는 세겜이 그 누이 디나를 더럽혔음이라

창34:14 야곱의 아들들이 그들에게 말하되 우리는 그리하지 못하겠노라 할례 받지 아니한 사람에게 우리 누이를 줄 수 없노니 이는 우리의 수치가 됨이니라

창34:15 그런즉 이같이 하면 너희에게 허락하리라 만일 너희 중 남자가 다 할례를 받고 우리 같이 되면

창34:16 우리 딸을 너희에게 주며 너희 딸을 우리가 데려오며 너희와 함께 거주하여 한 민족이 되려니와

창34:17 너희가 만일 우리 말을 듣지 아니하고 할례를 받지 아니하면 우리는 곧 우리 딸을 데리고 가리라

창34:18 그들의 말을 하몰과 그의 아들 세겜이 좋게 여기므로

창34:19 이 소년이 그 일 행하기를 자체하지 아니하였으니 그가 야곱의 딸을 사랑함이며 그는 그의 아버지 집에서 가장 존귀하였더라

창34:20 하몰과 그의 아들 세겜이 그들의 성읍 문에 이르러 그들의 성읍 사람들에게 말하여 이르되

창34:21 이 사람들은 우리와 친목하고 이 땅은 넓어 그들을 용납할 만하니 그들이 여기서 거주하며 매매하게 하고 우리가 그들의 딸들을 아내로 데려오고 우리 딸들도 그들에게 주자

창34:22 그러나 우리 중의 모든 남자가 그들이 할례를 받음 같이 할례를 받아야 그 사람들이 우리와 함께 거주하여 한 민족 되기를 허락할 것이라

창34:23 그러면 그들의 가축과 재산과 그들의 모든 짐승이 우리의 소유가 되지 않겠느냐 다만 그들의 말대로 하자 그러면 그들이 우리와 함께 거주하리라

창34:24 성문으로 출입하는 모든 자가 하몰과 그의 아들 세겜의 말을 듣고 성문으로 출입하는 그 모든 남자가 할례를 받으니라

창34:25 제삼일에 아직 그들이 아파할 때에 야곱의 두 아들 디나의 오라버니 시므온과 레위가 각기 칼을 가지고 가서 몰래 그 성읍을 기습하여 그 모든 남자를 죽이고

창34:26 칼로 하몰과 그의 아들 세겜을 죽이고 디나를 세겜의 집에서 데려오고

창34:27 야곱의 여러 아들이 그 시체 있는 성읍으로 가서 노략하였으니 이는 그들이 그들의 누이를 더럽힌 까닭이라

창34:28 그들이 양과 소와 나귀와 그 성읍에 있는 것과 들에 있는 것과

창34:29 그들의 모든 재물을 빼앗으며 그들의 자녀와 그들의 아내들을 사로잡고 집 속의 물건을 다 노략한지라

창34:30 야곱이 시므온과 레위에게 이르되 너희가 내게 화를 끼쳐 나로 하여금 이 땅의 주민 곧 가나안 족속과 브리스 족속에게 악취를 내게 하였도다 나는 수가 적은즉 그들이 모여 나를 치고 나를 죽이리니 그러면 나와 내 집이 멸망하리라

창34:31 그들이 이르되 그가 우리 누이를 창녀 같이 대우함이 옳으니이까

마가복음 5 장.

막5:1 예수께서 바다 건너편 거라사 인의 지방에 이르러

막5:2 배에서 나오시매 곧 더러운 귀신 들린 사람이 무덤 사이에서 나와 예수를 만나니라

막5:3 그 사람은 무덤 사이에 거처하는데 이제는 아무도 쇠사슬로도 맬 수 없게 되었으니

막5:4 이는 여러 번 고랑과 쇠사슬에 매였어도 쇠사슬을 끊고 고랑을 깨뜨렸음이러라 그리하여 아무도 그를 제어할 힘이 없는지라

막5:5 밤낮 무덤 사이에서나 산에서나 늘 소리 지르며 돌로 자기의 몸을 해치고 있었더라

막5:6 그가 멀리서 예수를 보고 달려와 절하며

막5:7 큰 소리로 부르짖어 이르되 지극히 높으신 하나님의 아들 예수여 나와 당신이 무슨 상관이 있나이까 원하건대 하나님 앞에 맹세하고 나를 괴롭히지 마옵소서 하니

막5:8 이는 예수께서 이미 그에게 이르시기를 더러운 귀신아 그 사람에게서 나오라 하셨음이라

막5:9 이에 물으시되 네 이름이 무엇이냐 이르되 내 이름은 군대니 우리가 많음이니이다 하고

막5:10 자기를 그 지방에서 내보내지 마시기를 간구하더니

막5:11 마침 거기 돼지의 큰 떼가 산 곁에서 먹고 있는지라

막5:12 이에 간구하여 이르되 우리를 돼지에게로 보내어 들어가게 하소서 하니

막5:13 허락하신대 더러운 귀신들이 나와서 돼지에게로 들어가매 거의 이천 마리 되는 떼가 바다를 향하여 비탈로 내리달아 바다에서 몰사하거늘

막5:14 치던 자들이 도망하여 읍내와 여러 마을에 말하니 사람들이 어떻게 되었는지를 보러 와서

막5:15 예수께 이르러 그 귀신 들렸던 자 곧 군대 귀신 지폈던 자가 옷을 입고 정신이 온전하여 앉은 것을 보고 두려워하더라

막5:16 이에 귀신 들렸던 자가 당한 것과 돼지의 일을 본 자들이 그들에게 알리매

막5:17 그들이 예수께 그 지방에서 떠나시기를 간구하더라

막5:18 예수께서 배에 오르실 때에 귀신 들렸던 사람이 함께 있기를 간구하였으나

막5:19 허락하지 아니하시고 그에게 이르시되 집으로 돌아가 주께서 네게 어떻게 큰 일을 행하사 너를 불쌍히 여기신 것을 네 가족에게 알리라 하시니

막5:20 그가 가서 예수께서 자기에게 어떻게 큰 일 행하셨는지를 데가볼리에 전파하니 모든 사람이 놀랍게 여기더라

막5:21 예수께서 배를 타시고 다시 맞은편으로 건너가시니 큰 무리가 그에게로 모이거늘 이에 바닷가에 계시더니

막5:22 회당장 중의 하나인 야이로라 하는 이가 와서 예수를 보고 발 아래 엎드리어

막5:23 간곡히 구하여 이르되 내 어린 딸이 죽게 되었사오니 오셔서 그 위에 손을 얹으사 그로 구원을 받아 살게 하소서 하거늘

막5:24 이에 그와 함께 가실새 큰 무리가 따라가며 에워싸 밀더라

막5:25 열두 해를 혈루증으로 앓아 온 한 여자가 있어

막5:26 많은 의사에게 많은 괴로움을 받았고 가진 것도 다 허비하였으되 아무 효험이 없고 도리어 더 중하여졌던 차에

막5:27 예수의 소문을 듣고 무리 가운데 끼어 뒤로 와서 그의 옷에 손을 대니

막5:28 이는 내가 그의 옷에만 손을 대어도 구원을 받으리라 생각함일러라

막5:29 이에 그의 혈루 근원이 곧 마르매 병이 나은 줄을 몸에 깨달으니라

막5:30 예수께서 그 능력이 자기에게서 나간 줄을 곧 스스로 아시고 무리 가운데서 돌이켜 말씀하시되 누가 내 옷에 손을 대었느냐 하시니

막5:31 제자들이 여짜오되 무리가 에워싸 미는 것을 보시며 누가 내게 손을 대었느냐 물으시나이까 하되

막5:32 예수께서 이 일 행한 여자를 보려고 둘러 보시니

막5:33 여자가 자기게 이루어진 일을 알고 두려워하여 떨며 와서 그 앞에 엎드려 모든 사실을 여쭈니

막5:34 예수께서 이르시되 딸아 네 믿음이 너를 구원하였으니 평안히 가라 네 병에서 놓여 건강할지어다

막5:35 아직 예수께서 말씀하실 때에 회당장의 집에서 사람들이 와서 회당장에게 이르되 당신의 딸이 죽었나이다 어찌하여 선생을 더 괴롭게 하나이까

막5:36 예수께서 그 하는 말을 곁에서 들으시고 회당장에게 이르시되 두려워하지 말고 믿기만 하라 하시고

막5:37 베드로와 야고보와 야고보의 형제 요한 외에 아무도 따라옴을 허락하지 아니하시고

막5:38 회당장의 집에 함께 가사 떠드는 것과 사람들이 울며 심히 통곡함을 보시고

막5:39 들어가서 그들에게 이르시되 너희가 어찌하여 떠들며 우느냐 이 아이가 죽은 것이 아니라 잔다 하시니

막5:40 그들이 비웃더라 예수께서 그들을 다 내보내신 후에 아이의 부모와 또 자기와 함께 한 자들을 데리시고 아이 있는 곳에 들어가사

막5:41 그 아이의 손을 잡고 이르시되 달리다굼 하시니 번역하면 곧 내가 네게 말하노니 소녀야 일어나라 하심이라

막5:42 소녀가 곧 일어나서 걸으니 나이가 열두 살이라 사람들이 곧 크게 놀라고 놀라거늘

막5:43 예수께서 이 일을 아무도 알지 못하게 하라고 그들을 많이 경계하시고 이에 소녀에게 먹을 것을 주라 하시니라

욥기 1 장.

욥1:1 우스 땅에 욥이라 불리는 사람이 있었는데 그 사람은 온전하고 정직하여 하나님을 경외하며 악에서 떠난 자더라

욥1:2 그에게 아들 일곱과 딸 셋이 태어나니라

욥1:3 그의 소유물은 양이 칠천 마리요 낙타가 삼천 마리요 소가 오백 마리요 암나귀가 오백 마리이며 종도 많이 있었으니 이 사람은 동방 사람 중에 가장 훌륭한 자라

욥1:4 그의 아들들이 자기 생일에 각각 자기의 집에서 잔치를 베풀고 그의 누이 세 명도 청하여 함께 먹고 마시더라

욥1:5 그들이 차례대로 잔치를 끝내면 욥이 그들을 불러다가 성결하게 하되 아침에 일어나서 그들의 명수대로 번제를 드렸으니 이는 욥이 말하기를 혹시 내 아들들이 죄를 범하여 마음으로 하나님을 욕되게 하였을까 함이라

욥1:6 하루는 하나님의 아들들이 와서 여호와 앞에 섰고 사탄도 그들 가운데에 온지라

욥1:7 여호와께서 사탄에게 이르시되 네가 어디서 왔느냐 사탄이 여호와께 대답하여 이르되 땅을 두루 돌아 여기 저기 다녀왔나이다

욥1:8 여호와께서 사탄에게 이르시되 네가 내 종 욥을 주의하여 보았느냐 그와 같이 온전하고 정직하여 하나님을 경외하며 악에서 떠난 자는 세상에 없느니라

욥1:9 사탄이 여호와께 대답하여 이르되 욥이 어찌 까닭 없이 하나님을 경외하리이까

욥1:10 주께서 그와 그의 집과 그의 모든 소유물을 울타리로 두르심 때문이 아니니이까 주께서 그의 손으로 하는 바를 복되게 하사 그의 소유물이 땅에 넘치게 하셨음이니이다

욥1:11 이제 주의 손을 펴서 그의 모든 소유물을 치소서 그리하시면 틀림없이 주를 향하여 욕하지 않겠나이까

욥1:12 여호와께서 사탄에게 이르시되 내가 그의 소유물을 다 네 손에 맡기노라 다만 그의 몸에는 네 손을 대지 말지니라 사탄이 곧 여호와 앞에서 물러가니라

욥1:13 하루는 욥의 자녀들이 그 맏아들의 집에서 음식을 먹으며 포도주를 마실 때에

욥1:14 사환이 욥에게 와서 아뢰되 소는 밭을 갈고 나귀는 그 곁에서 풀을 먹는데

욥1:15 스바 사람이 갑자기 이르러 그것들을 빼앗고 칼로 종들을 죽였나이다 나만 홀로 피하였으므로 주인께 아뢰러 왔나이다

욥1:16 그가 아직 말하는 동안에 또 한 사람이 와서 아뢰되 하나님의 불이 하늘에서 떨어져서 양과 종들을 살라 버렸나이다 나만 홀로 피하였으므로 주인께 아뢰러 왔나이다

욥1:17 그가 아직 말하는 동안에 또 한 사람이 와서 아뢰되 갈대아 사람이 세 무리를 지어 갑자기 낙타에게 달려들어 그것을 빼앗으며 칼로 종들을 죽였나이다 나만 홀로 피하였으므로 주인께 아뢰러 왔나이다

욥1:18 그가 아직 말하는 동안에 또 한 사람이 와서 아뢰되 주인의 자녀들이 그들의 맏아들의 집에서 음식을 먹으며 포도주를 마시는데

욥1:19 거친 들에서 큰 바람이 와서 집 네 모퉁이를 치매 그 청년들 위에 무너지므로 그들이 죽었나이다 나만 홀로 피하였으므로 주인께 아뢰러 왔나이다 한지라

욥1:20 욥이 일어나 겉옷을 찢고 머리털을 밀고 땅에 엎드려 예배하며

욥1:21 이르되 내가 모태에서 알몸으로 나왔사온즉 또한 알몸이 그리로 돌아가올지라 주신 이도 여호와시요 거두신 이도 여호와시오니 여호와의 이름이 찬송을 받으실지니이다 하고

욥1:22 이 모든 일에 욥이 범죄하지 아니하고 하나님을 향하여 원망하지 아니하니라

로 마 서 5 장.

롬5:1 그러므로 우리가 믿음으로 의롭다 하심을 받았으니 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님과 화평을 누리자

롬5:2 또한 그로 말미암아 우리가 믿음으로 서 있는 이 은혜에 들어감을 얻었으며 하나님의 영광을 바라고 즐거워하느니라

롬5:3 다만 이뿐 아니라 우리가 환난 중에도 즐거워하나니 이는 환난은 인내를,

롬5:4 인내는 연단을, 연단은 소망을 이루는 줄 앎이로다

롬5:5 소망이 우리를 부끄럽게 하지 아니함은 우리에게 주신 성령으로 말미암아 하나님의 사랑이 우리 마음에 부은 바 됨이니

롬5:6 우리가 아직 연약한 때에 기약대로 그리스도께서 경건하지 않은 자를 위하여 죽으셨도다

롬5:7 의인을 위하여 죽는 자가 쉽지 않고 선인을 위하여 용감히 죽는 자가 혹 있거니와

롬5:8 우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때에 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로 하나님께서 우리에 대한 자기의 사랑을 확증하셨느니라

롬5:9 그러면 이제 우리가 그의 피로 말미암아 의롭다 하심을 받았으니 더욱 그로 말미암아 진노하심에서 구원을 받을 것이니

롬5:10 곧 우리가 원수 되었을 때에 그의 아들의 죽으심으로 말미암아 하나님과 화목하게 되었은즉 화목하게 된 자로서는 더욱 그의 살아나심으로 말미암아 구원을 받을 것이니라

롬5:11 그뿐 아니라 이제 우리로 화목하게 하신 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님 안에서 또한 즐거워하느니라

롬5:12 그러므로 한 사람으로 말미암아 죄가 세상에 들어오고 죄로 말미암아 사망이 들어왔나니 이와 같이 모든 사람이 죄를 지었으므로 사망이 모든 사람에게 이르렀느니라

롬5:13 죄가 율법 있기 전에도 세상에 있었으나 율법이 없었을 때에는 죄를 죄로 여기지 아니하였느니라

롬5:14 그러나 아담으로부터 모세까지 아담의 범죄와 같은 죄를 짓지 아니한 자들까지도 사망이 왕노릇 하였나니 아담은 오실 자의 모형이라

롬5:15 그러나 이 은사는 그 범죄와 같지 아니하니 곧 한 사람의 범죄를 인하여 많은 사람이 죽었은즉 더욱 하나님의 은혜와 또한 한 사람 예수 그리스도의 은혜로 말미암은 선물은 많은 사람에게 넘쳤느니라

롬5:16 또 이 선물은 범죄한 한 사람으로 말미암은 것과 같지 아니하니 심판은 한 사람으로 말미암아 정죄에 이르렀으나 은사는 많은 범죄로 말미암아 의롭다 하심에 이름이니라

롬5:17 한 사람의 범죄로 말미암아 사망이 그 한 사람을 통하여 왕 노릇 하였은즉 더욱 은혜와 의의 선물을 넘치게 받는 자들은 한 분 예수 그리스도를 통하여 생명 안에서 왕노릇 하리로다

롬5:18 그런즉 한 범죄로 많은 사람이 정죄에 이른 것 같이 한 의로운 행위로 말미암아 많은 사람이 의롭다 하심을 받아 생명에 이르렀느니라

롬5:19 한 사람이 순종하지 아니함으로 많은 사람이 죄인 된 것 같이 한 사람이 순종하심으로 많은 사람이 의인이 되리라

롬5:20 율법이 들어온 것은 범죄를 더하게 하려 함이라 그러나 죄가 더한 곳에 은혜가 더욱 넘쳤나니

롬5:21 이는 죄가 사망 안에서 왕 노릇 한 것 같이 은혜도 또한 의로 말미암아 왕 노릇 하여 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 영생에 이르게 하려 함이라

Genesis 34.

34:1 Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land.

34:2 When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and violated her.

34:3 His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her.

34:4 And Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife."

34:5 When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he kept quiet about it until they came home.

34:6 Then Shechem's father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.

34:7 Now Jacob's sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were filled with grief and fury, because Shechem had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter--a thing that should not be done.

34:8 But Hamor said to them, "My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.

34:9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.

34:10 You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and acquire property in it."

34:11 Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask.

34:12 Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I'll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the girl as my wife."

34:13 Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob's sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor.

34:14 They said to them, "We can't do such a thing; we can't give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us.

34:15 We will give our consent to you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.

34:16 Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We'll settle among you and become one people with you.

34:17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we'll take our sister and go."

34:18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem.

34:19 The young man, who was the most honored of all his father's household, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter.

34:20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to their fellow townsmen.

34:21 "These men are friendly toward us," they said. "Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.

34:22 But the men will consent to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are.

34:23 Won't their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us give our consent to them, and they will settle among us."

34:24 All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.

34:25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male.

34:26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword and took Dinah from Shechem's house and left.

34:27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where their sister had been defiled.

34:28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields.

34:29 They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, taking as plunder everything in the houses.

34:30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed."

34:31 But they replied, "Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?"

Mark 5.

5:1 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.

5:2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him.

5:3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain.

5:4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.

5:5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.

5:6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.

5:7 He shouted at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won't torture me!"

5:8 For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of this man, you evil spirit!"

5:9 Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many."

5:10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.

5:11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.

5:12 The demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them."

5:13 He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

5:14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.

5:15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

5:16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man--and told about the pigs as well.

5:17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.

5:18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.

5:19 Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you."

5:20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

5:21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.

5:22 Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet

5:23 and pleaded earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live."

5:24 So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.

5:25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.

5:26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.

5:27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,

5:28 because she thought, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed."

5:29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.

5:30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?"

5:31 "You see the people crowding against you," his disciples answered, "and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?'"

5:32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.

5:33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.

5:34 He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering."

5:35 While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. "Your daughter is dead," they said. "Why bother the teacher any more?"

5:36 Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, "Don't be afraid; just believe."

5:37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.

5:38 When they came to the home of the synagogue ruler, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.

5:39 He went in and said to them, "Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep."

5:40 But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child's father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.

5:41 He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha koum!" (which means, "Little girl, I say to you, get up!").

5:42 Immediately the girl stood up and walked around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.

5:43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.

Job 1.

1:1 In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job. This man was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil.

1:2 He had seven sons and three daughters,

1:3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.

1:4 His sons used to take turns holding feasts in their homes, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

1:5 When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would send and have them purified. Early in the morning he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking, "Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts." This was Job's regular custom.

1:6 One day the angels came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.

1:7 The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From roaming through the earth and going back and forth in it."

1:8 Then the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil."

1:9 "Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan replied.

1:10 "Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.

1:11 But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face."

1:12 The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, then, everything he has is in your hands, but on the man himself do not lay a finger." Then Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.

1:13 One day when Job's sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house,

1:14 a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby,

1:15 and the Sabeans attacked and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

1:16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The fire of God fell from the sky and burned up the sheep and the servants, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

1:17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and carried them off. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

1:18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, "Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother's house,

1:19 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!"

1:20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship

1:21 and said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised."

1:22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

Romans 5.

5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

5:2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

5:3 Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;

5:4 perseverance, character; and character, hope.

5:5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

5:6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.

5:7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die.

5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

5:9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him!

5:10 For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

5:11 Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned--

5:13 for before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law.

5:14 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come.

5:15 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God's grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!

5:16 Again, the gift of God is not like the result of the one man's sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification.

5:17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

5:18 Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men.

5:19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

5:20 The law was added so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,

5:21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
