창세기 29 장.

창29:1 야곱이 길을 떠나 동방 사람의 땅에 이르러

창29:2 본즉 들에 우물이 있고 그 곁에 양 세 떼가 누워 있으니 이는 목자들이 그 우물에서 양 떼에게 물을 먹임이라 큰 돌로 우물 아귀를 덮었다가

창29:3 모든 떼가 모이면 그들이 우물 아귀에서 돌을 옮기고 그 양 떼에게 물을 먹이고는 우물 아귀 그 자리에 다시 그 돌을 덮더라

창29:4 야곱이 그들에게 이르되 내 형제여 어디서 왔느냐 그들이 이르되 하란에서 왔노라

창29:5 야곱이 그들에게 이르되 너희가 나홀의 손자 라반을 아느냐 그들이 이르되 아노라

창29:6 야곱이 그들에게 이르되 그가 평안하냐 이르되 평안하니라 그의 딸 라헬이 지금 양을 몰고 오느니라

창29:7 야곱이 이르되 해가 아직 높은즉 가축 모일 때가 아니니 양에게 물을 먹이고 가서 풀을 뜯게 하라

창29:8 그들이 이르되 우리가 그리하지 못하겠노라 떼가 다 모이고 목자들이 우물 아귀에서 돌을 옮겨야 우리가 양에게 물을 먹이느니라

창29:9 야곱이 그들과 말하는 동안에 라헬이 그의 아버지의 양과 함께 오니 그가 그의 양들을 치고 있었기 때문이더라

창29:10 야곱이 그의 외삼촌 라반의 딸 라헬과 그의 외삼촌의 양을 보고 나아가 우물 아귀에서 돌을 옮기고 외삼촌 라반의 양 떼에게 물을 먹이고

창29:11 그가 라헬에게 입맞추고 소리 내어 울며

창29:12 그에게 자기가 그의 아버지의 생질이요 리브가의 아들 됨을 말하였더니 라헬이 달려가서 그 아버지에게 알리매

창29:13 라반이 그의 생질 야곱의 소식을 듣고 달려와서 그를 영접하여 안고 입맞추며 자기 집으로 인도하여 들이니 야곱이 자기의 모든 일을 라반에게 말하매

창29:14 라반이 이르되 너는 참으로 내 혈육이로다 하였더라 야곱이 한 달을 그와 함께 거주하더니

창29:15 라반이 야곱에게 이르되 네가 비록 내 생질이나 어찌 그저 내 일을 하겠느냐 네 품삯을 어떻게 할지 내게 말하라

창29:16 라반에게 두 딸이 있으니 언니의 이름은 레아요 아우의 이름은 라헬이라

창29:17 레아는 시력이 약하고 라헬은 곱고 아리따우니

창29:18 야곱이 라헬을 더 사랑하므로 대답하되 내가 외삼촌의 작은 딸 라헬을 위하여 외삼촌에게 칠 년을 섬기리이다

창29:19 라반이 이르되 그를 네게 주는 것이 타인에게 주는 것보다 나으니 나와 함께 있으라

창29:20 야곱이 라헬을 위하여 칠 년 동안 라반을 섬겼으나 그를 사랑하는 까닭에 칠 년을 며칠 같이 여겼더라

창29:21 야곱이 라반에게 이르되 내 기한이 찼으니 내 아내를 내게 주소서 내가 그에게 들어가겠나이다

창29:22 라반이 그 곳 사람을 다 모아 잔치하고

창29:23 저녁에 그의 딸 레아를 야곱에게로 데려가매 야곱이 그에게로 들어가니라

창29:24 라반이 또 그의 여종 실바를 그의 딸 레아에게 시녀로 주었더라

창29:25 야곱이 아침에 보니 레아라 라반에게 이르되 외삼촌이 어찌하여 내게 이같이 행하셨나이까 내가 라헬을 위하여 외삼촌을 섬기지 아니하였나이까 외삼촌이 나를 속이심은 어찌됨이니이까

창29:26 라반이 이르되 언니보다 아우를 먼저 주는 것은 우리 지방에서 하지 아니하는 바이라

창29:27 이를 위하여 칠 일을 채우라 우리가 그도 네게 주리니 네가 또 나를 칠 년 동안 섬길지니라

창29:28 야곱이 그대로 하여 그 칠 일을 채우매 라반이 딸 라헬도 그에게 아내로 주고

창29:29 라반이 또 그의 여종 빌하를 그의 딸 라헬에게 주어 시녀가 되게 하매

창29:30 야곱이 또한 라헬에게로 들어갔고 그가 레아보다 라헬을 더 사랑하여 다시 칠 년 동안 라반을 섬겼더라

창29:31 여호와께서 레아가 사랑 받지 못함을 보시고 그의 태를 여셨으나 라헬은 자녀가 없었더라

창29:32 레아가 임신하여 아들을 낳고 그 이름을 르우벤이라 하여 이르되 여호와께서 나의 괴로움을 돌보셨으니 이제는 내 남편이 나를 사랑하리로다 하였더라

창29:33 그가 다시 임신하여 아들을 낳고 이르되 여호와께서 내가 사랑 받지 못함을 들으셨으므로 내게 이 아들도 주셨도다 하고 그의 이름을 시므온이라 하였으며

창29:34 그가 또 임신하여 아들을 낳고 이르되 내가 그에게 세 아들을 낳았으니 내 남편이 지금부터 나와 연합하리로다 하고 그의 이름을 레위라 하였으며

창29:35 그가 또 임신하여 아들을 낳고 이르되 내가 이제는 여호와를 찬송하리로다 하고 이로 말미암아 그가 그의 이름을 유다라 하였고 그의 출산이 멈추었더라

마태복음 28 장.

마28:1 안식일이 다 지나고 안식 후 첫 날이 되려는 새벽에 막달라 마리아와 다른 마리아가 무덤을 보려고 갔더니

마28:2 큰 지진이 나며 주의 천사가 하늘로부터 내려와 돌을 굴려 내고 그 위에 앉았는데

마28:3 그 형상이 번개 같고 그 옷은 눈같이 희거늘

마28:4 지키던 자들이 그를 무서워하여 떨며 죽은 사람과 같이 되었더라

마28:5 천사가 여자들에게 말하여 이르되 너희는 무서워하지 말라 십자가에 못 박히신 예수를 너희가 찾는 줄을 내가 아노라

마28:6 그가 여기 계시지 않고 그가 말씀하시던 대로 살아나셨느니라 와서 그가 누우셨던 곳을 보라

마28:7 또 빨리 가서 그의 제자들에게 이르되 그가 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나셨고 너희보다 먼저 갈릴리로 가시나니 거기서 너희가 뵈오리라 하라 보라 내가 너희에게 일렀느니라 하거늘

마28:8 그 여자들이 무서움과 큰 기쁨으로 빨리 무덤을 떠나 제자들에게 알리려고 달음질할새

마28:9 예수께서 그들을 만나 이르시되 평안하냐 하시거늘 여자들이 나아가 그 발을 붙잡고 경배하니

마28:10 이에 예수께서 이르시되 무서워하지 말라 가서 내 형제들에게 갈릴리로 가라 하라 거기서 나를 보리라 하시니라

마28:11 여자들이 갈 때 경비병 중 몇이 성에 들어가 모든 된 일을 대제사장들에게 알리니

마28:12 그들이 장로들과 함께 모여 의논하고 군인들에게 돈을 많이 주며

마28:13 이르되 너희는 말하기를 그의 제자들이 밤에 와서 우리가 잘 때에 그를 도적질하여 갔다 하라

마28:14 만일 이 말이 총독에게 들리면 우리가 권하여 너희로 근심하지 않게 하리라 하니

마28:15 군인들이 돈을 받고 가르친 대로 하였으니 이 말이 오늘날까지 유대인 가운데 두루 퍼지니라

마28:16 열한 제자가 갈릴리에 가서 예수께서 지시하신 산에 이르러

마28:17 예수를 뵈옵고 경배하나 아직도 의심하는 사람들이 있더라

마28:18 예수께서 나아와 말씀하여 이르시되 하늘과 땅의 모든 권세를 내게 주셨으니

마28:19 그러므로 너희는 가서 모든 민족을 제자로 삼아 아버지와 아들과 성령의 이름으로 세례를 베풀고

마28:20 내가 너희에게 분부한 모든 것을 가르쳐 지키게 하라 볼지어다 내가 세상 끝날까지 너희와 항상 함께 있으리라 하시니라

에스더 5 장.

에5:1 제삼일에 에스더가 왕후의 예복을 입고 왕궁 안 뜰 곧 어전 맞은편에 서니 왕이 어전에서 전문을 대하여 왕좌에 앉았다가

에5:2 왕후 에스더가 뜰에 선 것을 본 즉 매우 사랑스러우므로 손에 잡았던 금 규를 그에게 내미니 에스더가 가까이 가서 금 규 끝을 만진지라

에5:3 왕이 이르되 왕후 에스더여 그대의 소원이 무엇이며 요구가 무엇이냐 나라의 절반이라도 그대에게 주겠노라 하니

에5:4 에스더가 이르되 오늘 내가 왕을 위하여 잔치를 베풀었사오니 왕이 좋게 여기시거든 하만과 함께 오소서 하니

에5:5 왕이 이르되 에스더가 말한 대로 하도록 하만을 급히 부르라 하고 이에 왕이 하만과 함께 에스더가 베푼 잔치에 가니라

에5:6 잔치의 술을 마실 때에 왕이 에스더에게 이르되 그대의 소청이 무엇이뇨 곧 허락하겠노라 그대의 요구가 무엇이뇨 나라의 절반이라 할지라도 시행하겠노라 하니 이르되

에5:7 에스더가 대답하여 이르되 나의 소청, 나의 요구가 이러하니이다

에5:8 내가 만일 왕의 목전에서 은혜를 입었고 왕이 내 소청을 허락하시며 내 요구를 시행하시기를 좋게 여기시면 내가 왕과 하만을 위하여 베푸는 잔치에 또 오소서 내일은 왕의 말씀대로 하리이다 하니라

에5:9 그 날 하만이 마음이 기뻐 즐거이 나오더니 모르드개가 대궐 문에 있어 일어나지도 아니하고 몸을 움직이지도 아니하는 것을 보고 매우 노하나

에5:10 참고 집에 돌아와서 사람을 보내어 그이 친구들과 그의 아내 세레스를 청하여

에5:11 자기의 큰 영광과 자녀가 많은 것과 왕이 자기를 들어 왕의 모든 지방관이나 신하들보다 높인 것을 다 말하고

에5:12 또 하만이 이르되 왕후 에스더가 그 베푼 잔치에 왕과 함께 오기를 허락 받은 자는 나밖에 없었고 내일도 왕과 함께 청함을 받았느니라

에5:13 그러나 유다 사람 모르드개가 대궐 문에 앉은 것을 보는 동안에는 이 모든 일이 만족하지 아니하도다 하니

에5:14 그의 아내 세레스와 모든 친구들이 이르되 높이가 오십 규빗 되는 나무를 세우고 내일 왕에게 모르드개를 그 나무에 매달기를 구하고 왕과 함께 즐거이 잔치에 가소서 하니 하만이 그 말을 좋게 여기고 명령하여 나무를 세우니라

사도행전 28 장.

행28:1 우리가 구조된 후에 안즉 그 섬은 멜리데라 하더라

행28:2 비가 오고 날이 차매 원주민들이 우리에게 특별한 동정을 하여 불을 피워 우리를 다 영접하더라

행28:3 바울이 나무 한 묶음을 거두어 불에 넣으니 뜨거움으로 말미암아 독사가 나와 그 손을 물고 있는지라

행28:4 원주민들이 이 짐승이 그 손에 매달려 있음을 보고 서로 말하되 진실로 이 사람은 살인한 자로다 바다에서는 구조를 받았으나 공의가 그를 살지 못하게 함이로다 하더니

행28:5 바울이 그 짐승을 불에 떨어 버리매 조금도 상함이 없더라

행28:6 그들은 그가 붓든지 혹은 갑자기 쓰러져 죽을 줄로 기다렸다가 오래 기다려도 그에게 아무 이상이 없음을 보고 돌이켜 생각하여 말하되 그를 신이라 하더라

행28:7 이 섬에 가장 높은 사람 보블리오라 하는 이가 그 근처에 토지가 있는지라 그가 우리를 영접하여 사흘이나 친절히 머물게 하더니

행28:8 보블리오의 부친이 열병과 이질에 걸려 누워 있거늘 바울이 들어가서 기도하고 그에게 안수하여 낫게 하매

행28:9 이러므로 섬 가운데 다른 병든 사람들이 와서 고침을 받고

행28:10 후한 예로 우리를 대접하고 떠날 때에 우리 쓸 것을 배에 실었더라

행28:11 석 달 후에 우리가 그 섬에서 겨울을 난 알렉산드리아 배를 타고 떠나니 그 배의 머리 장식은 디오스구로라

행28:12 수라구사에 대고 사흘을 있다가

행28:13 거기서 둘러가서 레기온에 이르러 하루를 지낸 후 남풍이 일어나므로 이튿날 보디올에 이르러

행28:14 거기서 형제들을 만나 그들의 청함을 받아 이레를 함께 머무니라 그래서 우리는 이와 같이 로마로 가니라

행28:15 그 곳 형제들이 우리 소식을 듣고 압비오 광장과 트레이스 타베르네까지 맞으러 오니 바울이 그들을 보고 하나님께 감사하고 담대한 마음을 얻으니라

행28:16 우리가 로마에 들어가니 바울에게는 자기를 지키는 한 군인과 함께 따로 있게 허락하더라

행28:17 사흘 후에 바울이 유대인 중 높은 사람들을 청하여 그들이 모인 후에 이르되 여러분 형제들아 내가 이스라엘 백성이나 우리 조상의 관습을 배척한 일이 없는데 예루살렘에서 로마인의 손에 죄수로 내준 바 되었으니

행28:18 로마인은 나를 심문하여 죽일 죄목이 없으므로 석방하려 하였으나

행28:19 유대인들이 반대하기로 내가 마지 못하여 가이사에게 상소함이요 내 민족을 고발하려는 것이 아니니라

행28:20 이러하므로 너희를 보고 함께 이야기하려고 청하였으니 이스라엘의 소망으로 말미암아하여 내가 이 쇠사슬에 매인 바 되었노라

행28:21 그들이 이르되 우리가 유대에서 네게 대한 편지도 받은 일이 없고 또 형제 중 누가 와서 네게 대하여 좋지 못한 것을 전하든지 이야기한 일도 없느니라

행28:22 이에 우리가 너의 사상이 어떠한가 듣고자 하니 이 파에 대하여는 어디서든지 반대를 받는 줄 알기 때문이라 하더라

행28:23 그들이 날짜를 정하고 그가 유숙하는 집에 많이 오니 바울이 아침부터 저녁까지 강론하여 하나님의 나라를 증언하고 모세의 율법과 선지자의 말을 가지고 예수에 대하여 권하더라

행28:24 그 말을 믿는 사람도 있고 믿지 아니하는 사람도 있어

행28:25 서로 맞지 아니하여 흩어질 때에 바울이 한 말로 이르되 성령이 선지자 이사야를 통하여 너희 조상들에게 말씀하신 것이 옳도다

행28:26 일렀으되 이 백성에게 가서 말하기를 너희가 듣기는 들어도 도무지 깨닫지 못하며 보기는 보아도 도무지 알지 못하는도다

행28:27 이 백성들의 마음이 우둔하여져서 그 귀로는 둔하게 듣고 그 눈은 감았으니 이는 눈으로 보고 귀로 듣고 마음으로 깨달아 돌아오면 내가 고쳐 줄까 함이라 하였으니

행28:28 그런즉 하나님의 이 구원이 이방인에게로 보내어진 줄 알라 그들은 그것을 들으리라 하더라

행28:29 (없 음)

행28:30 바울이 온 이태를 자기 셋집에 머물면서 자기에게 오는 사람을 다 영접하고

행28:31 하나님의 나라를 전파하며 주 예수 그리스도에 관한 모든 것을 담대하게 거침없이 가르치더라

Genesis 29.

29:1 Then Jacob continued on his journey and came to the land of the eastern peoples.

29:2 There he saw a well in the field, with three flocks of sheep lying near it because the flocks were watered from that well. The stone over the mouth of the well was large.

29:3 When all the flocks were gathered there, the shepherds would roll the stone away from the well's mouth and water the sheep. Then they would return the stone to its place over the mouth of the well.

29:4 Jacob asked the shepherds, "My brothers, where are you from?" "We're from Haran," they replied.

29:5 He said to them, "Do you know Laban, Nahor's grandson?" "Yes, we know him," they answered.

29:6 Then Jacob asked them, "Is he well?" "Yes, he is," they said, "and here comes his daughter Rachel with the sheep."

29:7 "Look," he said, "the sun is still high; it is not time for the flocks to be gathered. Water the sheep and take them back to pasture."

29:8 "We can't," they replied, "until all the flocks are gathered and the stone has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water the sheep."

29:9 While he was still talking with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she was a shepherdess.

29:10 When Jacob saw Rachel daughter of Laban, his mother's brother, and Laban's sheep, he went over and rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well and watered his uncle's sheep.

29:11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel and began to weep aloud.

29:12 He had told Rachel that he was a relative of her father and a son of Rebekah. So she ran and told her father.

29:13 As soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister's son, he hurried to meet him. He embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his home, and there Jacob told him all these things.

29:14 Then Laban said to him, "You are my own flesh and blood." After Jacob had stayed with him for a whole month,

29:15 Laban said to him, "Just because you are a relative of mine, should you work for me for nothing? Tell me what your wages should be."

29:16 Now Laban had two daughters; the name of the older was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

29:17 Leah had weak eyes, but Rachel was lovely in form, and beautiful.

29:18 Jacob was in love with Rachel and said, "I'll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel."

29:19 Laban said, "It's better that I give her to you than to some other man. Stay here with me."

29:20 So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.

29:21 Then Jacob said to Laban, "Give me my wife. My time is completed, and I want to lie with her."

29:22 So Laban brought together all the people of the place and gave a feast.

29:23 But when evening came, he took his daughter Leah and gave her to Jacob, and Jacob lay with her.

29:24 And Laban gave his servant girl Zilpah to his daughter as her maidservant.

29:25 When morning came, there was Leah! So Jacob said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? I served you for Rachel, didn't I? Why have you deceived me?"

29:26 Laban replied, "It is not our custom here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older one.

29:27 Finish this daughter's bridal week; then we will give you the younger one also, in return for another seven years of work."

29:28 And Jacob did so. He finished the week with Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel to be his wife.

29:29 Laban gave his servant girl Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her maidservant.

29:30 Jacob lay with Rachel also, and he loved Rachel more than Leah. And he worked for Laban another seven years.

29:31 When the LORD saw that Leah was not loved, he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.

29:32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said, "It is because the LORD has seen my misery. Surely my husband will love me now."

29:33 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, "Because the LORD heard that I am not loved, he gave me this one too." So she named him Simeon.

29:34 Again she conceived, and when she gave birth to a son she said, "Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons." So he was named Levi.

29:35 She conceived again, and when she gave birth to a son she said, "This time I will praise the LORD." So she named him Judah. Then she stopped having children.

Matthew 28.

28:1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

28:2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.

28:3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.

28:4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

28:5 The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.

28:6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.

28:7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."

28:8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.

28:9 Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him.

28:10 Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."

28:11 While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened.

28:12 When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money,

28:13 telling them, "You are to say, 'His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.'

28:14 If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble."

28:15 So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.

28:16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.

28:17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.

28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Esther 5.

5:1 On the third day Esther put on her royal robes and stood in the inner court of the palace, in front of the king's hall. The king was sitting on his royal throne in the hall, facing the entrance.

5:2 When he saw Queen Esther standing in the court, he was pleased with her and held out to her the gold scepter that was in his hand. So Esther approached and touched the tip of the scepter.

5:3 Then the king asked, "What is it, Queen Esther? What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be given you."

5:4 "If it pleases the king," replied Esther, "let the king, together with Haman, come today to a banquet I have prepared for him."

5:5 "Bring Haman at once," the king said, "so that we may do what Esther asks." So the king and Haman went to the banquet Esther had prepared.

5:6 As they were drinking wine, the king again asked Esther, "Now what is your petition? It will be given you. And what is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be granted."

5:7 Esther replied, "My petition and my request is this:

5:8 If the king regards me with favor and if it pleases the king to grant my petition and fulfill my request, let the king and Haman come tomorrow to the banquet I will prepare for them. Then I will answer the king's question."

5:9 Haman went out that day happy and in high spirits. But when he saw Mordecai at the king's gate and observed that he neither rose nor showed fear in his presence, he was filled with rage against Mordecai.

5:10 Nevertheless, Haman restrained himself and went home. Calling together his friends and Zeresh, his wife,

5:11 Haman boasted to them about his vast wealth, his many sons, and all the ways the king had honored him and how he had elevated him above the other nobles and officials.

5:12 "And that's not all," Haman added. "I'm the only person Queen Esther invited to accompany the king to the banquet she gave. And she has invited me along with the king tomorrow.

5:13 But all this gives me no satisfaction as long as I see that Jew Mordecai sitting at the king's gate."

5:14 His wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, "Have a gallows built, seventy-five feet high, and ask the king in the morning to have Mordecai hanged on it. Then go with the king to the dinner and be happy." This suggestion delighted Haman, and he had the gallows built.

Acts (of the Apostles) 28.

28:1 Once safely on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta.

28:2 The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold.

28:3 Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand.

28:4 When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, "This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live."

28:5 But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects.

28:6 The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead, but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.

28:7 There was an estate nearby that belonged to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us to his home and for three days entertained us hospitably.

28:8 His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him.

28:9 When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured.

28:10 They honored us in many ways and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed.

28:11 After three months we put out to sea in a ship that had wintered in the island. It was an Alexandrian ship with the figurehead of the twin gods Castor and Pollux.

28:12 We put in at Syracuse and stayed there three days.

28:13 From there we set sail and arrived at Rhegium. The next day the south wind came up, and on the following day we reached Puteoli.

28:14 There we found some brothers who invited us to spend a week with them. And so we came to Rome.

28:15 The brothers there had heard that we were coming, and they traveled as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. At the sight of these men Paul thanked God and was encouraged.

28:16 When we got to Rome, Paul was allowed to live by himself, with a soldier to guard him.

28:17 Three days later he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had assembled, Paul said to them: "My brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or against the customs of our ancestors, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans.

28:18 They examined me and wanted to release me, because I was not guilty of any crime deserving death.

28:19 But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar--not that I had any charge to bring against my own people.

28:20 For this reason I have asked to see you and talk with you. It is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain."

28:21 They replied, "We have not received any letters from Judea concerning you, and none of the brothers who have come from there has reported or said anything bad about you.

28:22 But we want to hear what your views are, for we know that people everywhere are talking against this sect."

28:23 They arranged to meet Paul on a certain day, and came in even larger numbers to the place where he was staying. From morning till evening he explained and declared to them the kingdom of God and tried to convince them about Jesus from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets.

28:24 Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe.

28:25 They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: "The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your forefathers when he said through Isaiah the prophet:

28:26 "'Go to this people and say, "You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving."

28:27 For this people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.'

28:28 "Therefore I want you to know that God's salvation has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen!"

28:30 For two whole years Paul stayed there in his own rented house and welcomed all who came to see him.
