창세기 28 장.

창28:1 이삭이 야곱을 불러 그에게 축복하고 또 당부하여 이로되 너는 가나안 사람의 딸들 중에서 아내를 맞이하지 말고

창28:2 일어나 밧단아람으로 가서 네 외조부 브두엘의 집에 이르러 거기서 네 외삼촌 라반의 딸 중에서 아내를 맞이하라

창28:3 전능하신 하나님이 네게 복을 주시어 네가 생육하고 번성하게 하여 네가 여러 족속을 이루게 하시고

창28:4 아브라함에게 허락하신 복을 네게 주시되 너와 함께 네 자손에게도 주사 하나님이 아브라함에게 주신 땅 곧 네가 거류하는 땅을 네가 차지하게 하시기를 원하노라

창28:5 이에 이삭이 야곱을 보내매 그가 밧단아람으로 가서 라반에게 이르렀으니 라반은 아람 사람 브두엘의 아들이요 야곱과 에서의 어머니 리브가의 오라비더라

창28:6 에서가 본즉 이삭이 야곱에게 축복하고 그를 밧단아람으로 보내어 거기서 아내를 맞이하게 하였고 또 그에게 축복하고 명하기를 너는 가나안 사람의 딸들 중에서 아내를 맞이하지 말라 하였고

창28:7 또 야곱이 부모의 명을 따라 밧단아람으로 갔으며

창28:8 에서가 또 본즉 가나안 사람의 딸들이 그의 아버지 이삭을 기쁘게 하지 못하는지라

창28:9 이에 에서가 이스마엘에게 가서 그 본처들 외에 아브라함의 아들 이스마엘의 딸이요 느바욧의 누이인 마할랏을 아내로 맞이하였더라

창28:10 야곱이 브엘세바에서 떠나 하란으로 향하여 가더니

창28:11 한 곳에 이르러는 해가 진지라 거기서 유숙하려고 그 곳의 한 돌을 가져다가 베개로 삼고 거기 누워 자더니

창28:12 꿈에 본즉 사닥다리가 땅 위에 서 있는데 그 꼭대기가 하늘에 닿았고 또 본즉 하나님의 사자들이 그 위에서 오르락내리락 하고

창28:13 또 본즉 여호와께서 그 위에 서서 이르시되 나는 여호와니 너의 조부 아브라함의 하나님이요 이삭의 하나님이라 네가 누워 있는 땅을 내가 너와 네 자손에게 주리니

창28:14 네 자손이 땅의 티끌 같이 되어 네가 서쪽과 동쪽과 북쪽과 남쪽으로 퍼져나갈지며 땅의 모든 족속이 너와 네 자손으로 말미암아 복을 받으리라

창28:15 내가 너와 함께 있어 네가 어디로 가든지 너를 지키며 너를 이끌어 이 땅으로 돌아오게 할지라 내가 네게 허락한 것을 다 이루기까지 너를 떠나지 아니하리라 하신지라

창28:16 야곱이 잠이 깨어 이르되 여호와께서 과연 여기 계시거늘 내가 알지 못하였도다

창28:17 이에 두려워하여 이르되 두렵도다 이 곳이여 이것은 다름 아닌 하나님의 집이요 이는 하늘의 문이로다 하고

창28:18 야곱이 아침에 일찍이 일어나 베개로 삼았던 돌을 가져다가 기둥으로 세우고 그 위에 기름을 붓고

창28:19 그 곳 이름을 벧엘이라 하였더라 이 성의 옛 이름은 루스더라

창28:20 야곱이 서원하여 이르되 하나님이 나와 함께 계셔서 내가 가는 이 길에서 나를 지키시고 먹을 떡과 입을 옷을 주시어

창28:21 내가 평안히 아버지 집으로 돌아가게 하시오면 여호와께서 나의 하나님이 되실 것이요

창28:22 내가 기둥으로 세운 이 돌이 하나님의 집이 될 것이요 하나님께서 내게 주신 모든 것에서 십분의 일을 내가 반드시 하나님께 드리겠나이다 하였더라

마태복음 27 장.

마27:1 새벽에 모든 대제사장과 백성의 장로들이 예수를 죽이려고 함께 의논하고

마27:2 결박하여 끌고 가서 총독 빌라도에게 넘겨 주니라

마27:3 그 때에 예수를 판 유다가 그의 정죄됨을 보고 스스로 뉘우쳐 그 은 삼십을 대제사장들과 장로들에게 도로 갖다 주며

마27:4 이르되 내가 무죄한 피를 팔고 죄를 범하였도다 하니 그들이 이르되 그것이 우리에게 무슨 상관이냐 네가 당하라 하거늘

마27:5 유다가 은을 성소에 던져 넣고 물러가서 스스로 목매어 죽은지라

마27:6 대제사장들이 그 은을 거두며 이르되 이것은 핏값이라 성전고에 넣어 둠이 옳지 않다 하고

마27:7 의논한 후 이것으로 토기장이의 밭을 사서 나그네의 묘지를 삼았으니

마27:8 그러므로 오늘날까지 그 밭을 피밭이라 일컫느니라

마27:9 이에 선지자 예레미야를 통하여 하신 말씀이 이루어졌나니 일렀으되 그들이 그 가격 매겨진 자 곧 이스라엘 자손 중에서 가격 매긴 자의 가격 곧 은 삼십을 가지고

마27:10 토기장이의 밭 값으로 주었으니 이는 주께서 내게 명하신 바와 같으니라 하였더라

마27:11 예수께서 총독 앞에 섰으매 총독이 물어 이르되 네가 유대인의 왕이냐 예수께서 대답하시되 네 말이 옳도다 하시고

마27:12 대제사장들과 장로들에게 고발을 당하되 아무 대답도 아니하시는지라

마27:13 이에 빌라도가 이르되 그들이 너를 쳐서 얼마나 많은 것으로 증언하는지 듣지 못하느냐 하되

마27:14 한 마디도 대답하지 아니하시니 총독이 크게 놀라워하더라

마27:15 명절이 되면 총독이 무리의 소원대로 죄수 한 사람을 놓아 주는 전례가 있더니

마27:16 그 때에 바라바라 하는 유명한 죄수가 있는데

마27:17 그들이 모였을 때에 빌라도가 물어 이르되 너희는 내가 누구를 너희에게 놓아 주기를 원하느냐 바라바냐 그리스도라 하는 예수냐 하니

마27:18 이는 그가 그들의 시기(猜忌)로 예수를 넘겨 준 줄 앎이더라

마27:19 총독이 재판석에 앉았을 때에 그의 아내가 사람을 보내어 이르되 저 옳은 사람에게 아무 상관도 하지 마옵소서 오늘 꿈에 내가 그 사람으로 인하여 애를 많이 태웠나이다 하더라

마27:20 대제사장들과 장로들이 무리를 권하여 바라바를 달라 하게 하고 예수를 죽이자 하게 하였더니

마27:21 총독이 대답하여 이르되 둘 중의 누구를 너희에게 놓아 주기를 원하느냐 이르되 바라바로소이다

마27:22 빌라도가 이르되 그러면 그리스도라 하는 예수를 내가 어떻게 하랴 그들이 다 이르되 십자가에 못 박혀야 하겠나이다

마27:23 빌라도가 이르되 어찜이냐 무슨 악한 일을 하였느냐 그들이 더욱 소리질러 이르되 십자가에 못 박혀야 하겠나이다 하는지라

마27:24 빌라도가 아무 성과도 없이 도리어 민란이 나려는 것을 보고 물을 가져다가 무리 앞에서 손을 씻으며 이르되 이 사람의 피에 대하여 나는 무죄하니 너희가 당하라

마27:25 백성이 다 대답하여 이르되 그 피를 우리와 우리 자손에게 돌릴지어다 하거늘

마27:26 이에 바라바는 저희에게 놓아 주고 예수는 채찍질하고 십자가에 못 박히게 넘겨 주니라

마27:27 이에 총독의 군병들이 예수를 데리고 관정 안으로 들어가서 온 군대를 그에게로 모으고

마27:28 그의 옷을 벗기고 홍포를 입히며

마27:29 가시관을 엮어 그 머리에 씌우고 갈대를 그 오른손에 들리고 그 앞에서 무릎을 꿇고 희롱하여 이르되 유대인의 왕이여 평안할지어다 하며

마27:30 그에게 침 뱉고 갈대를 빼앗아 그의 머리를 치더라

마27:31 희롱을 다한 후 홍포를 벗기고 도로 그의 옷을 입혀 십자가에 못 박으려고 끌고 나가니라

마27:32 나가다가 시몬이란 구레네 사람을 만나매 그에게 예수의 십자가를 억지로 지워 가게 하였더라

마27:33 골고다 즉 해골의 곳이라는 곳에 이르러

마27:34 쓸개 탄 포도주를 예수께 주어 마시게 하려 하였더니 예수께서 맛보시고 마시고자 하지 아니하시더라

마27:35 그들이 예수를 십자가에 못 박은 후에 그 옷을 제비 뽑아 나누고

마27:36 거기 앉아 지키더라

마27:37 그 머리 위에 이는 유대인의 왕 예수라 쓴 죄패를 붙였더라

마27:38 이 때에 예수와 함께 강도 둘이 십자가에 못 박히니 하나는 우편에, 하나는 좌편에 있더라

마27:39 지나가는 자들은 자기 머리를 흔들며 예수를 모욕하여

마27:40 이르되 성전을 헐고 사흘에 짓는 자여 네가 만일 하나님의 아들이어든 자기를 구원하고 십자가에서 내려오라 하며

마27:41 그와 같이 대제사장들과 서기관들과 장로들과 함께 희롱하여 이르되

마27:42 그가 남은 구원하였으되 자기는 구원할 수 없도다 그가 이스라엘의 왕이로다 지금 십자가에서 내려올지어다 그리하면 우리가 믿겠노라

마27:43 그가 하나님을 신뢰하니 하나님이 원하시면 이제 그를 구원하실지라 그의 말이 나는 하나님의 아들이라 하였도다 하며

마27:44 함께 십자가에 못 박힌 강도들도 이와 같이 욕하더라

마27:45 제육시로부터 온 땅에 어둠이 임하여 제구시까지 계속되더니

마27:46 제구시쯤에 예수께서 크게 소리질러 이르시되 엘리 엘리 라마 사박다니 하시니 이는 곧 나의 하나님, 나의 하나님, 어찌하여 나를 버리셨나이까 하는 뜻이라

마27:47 거기 섰던 자 중 어떤 이들이 듣고 이르되 이 사람이 엘리야를 부른다 하고

마27:48 그 중의 한 사람이 곧 달려가서 해면을 가져다가 신 포도주에 적시어 갈대에 꿰어 마시게 하거늘

마27:49 그 남은 사람들이 이르되 가만 두어라 엘리야가 와서 그를 구원하나 보자 하더라

마27:50 예수께서 다시 크게 소리 지르시고 영혼이 떠나시니다

마27:51 이에 성소 휘장이 위로부터 아래까지 찢어져 둘이 되고 땅이 진동하며 바위가 터지고

마27:52 무덤들이 열리며 자던 성도의 몸이 많이 일어나되

마27:53 예수의 부활 후에 그들이 무덤에서 나와서 거룩한 성에 들어가 많은 사람에게 보이니라

마27:54 백부장과 및 함께 예수를 지키던 자들이 지진과 그 일어난 일들을 보고 심히 두려워하여 이르되 이는 진실로 하나님의 아들이었도다 하더라

마27:55 예수를 섬기며 갈릴리에서부터 따라온 많은 여자가 거기 있어 멀리서 바라보고 있으니

마27:56 그 중에는 막달라 마리아와 또 야고보와 요셉의 어머니 마리아와 또 세베대의 아들들의 어머니도 있더라

마27:57 저물었을 때에 아리마대의 부자 요셉이라 하는 사람이 왔으니 그도 예수의 제자라

마27:58 빌라도에게 가서 예수의 시체를 달라 하니 이에 빌라도가 내주라 명령하거늘

마27:59 요셉이 시체를 가져다가 깨끗한 세마포로 싸서

마27:60 바위 속에 판 자기 새 무덤에 넣어 두고 큰 돌을 굴려 무덤 문에 놓고 가니

마27:61 거기 막달라 마리아와 다른 마리아가 무덤을 향하여 앉았더라

마27:62 그 이튿날은 준비일 다음 날이라 대제사장들과 바리새인들이 함께 빌라도에게 모여 이르되

마27:63 주여 저 속이던 자가 살아 있을 때에 말하되 내가 사흘 후에 다시 살아나리라 한 것을 우리가 기억하노니

마27:64 그러므로 명령하여 그 무덤을 사흘까지 굳게 지키게 하소서 그의 제자들이 와서 시체를 도둑질하여 가고 백성에게 말하되 그가 죽은 자 가운데서 살아났다 하면 후의 속임이 전보다 더 클까 하나이다 하니

마27:65 빌라도가 이르되 너희에게 경비병이 있으니 가서 힘대로 굳게 지키라 하거늘

마27:66 그들이 경비병과 함께 가서 돌을 인봉하고 무덤을 굳게 지키니라

에스더 4 장.

에4:1 모르드개가 이 모든 일을 알고 자기의 옷을 찢고 굵은 베 옷을 입고 재를 뒤집어쓰고 성중에 나가서 대성 통곡하며

에4:2 대궐 문 앞까지 이르렀으니 굵은 베 옷을 입은 자는 대궐 문에 들어가지 못함이라

에4:3 왕의 명령과 조서가 각 지방에 이르매 유다인이 크게 애통하여 금식하며 울며 부르짖고 굵은 베 옷을 입고 재에 누운 자가 무수하더라

에4:4 에스더의 시녀와 내시가 나아와 전하니 왕후가 매우 근심하여 입을 의복을 모르드개에게 보내어 그 굵은 베 옷을 벗기고자 하나 모르드개가 받지 아니하는지라

에4:5 에스더가 왕의 어명으로 자기에게 가까이 있는 내시 하닥을 불러 명령하여 모르드개에게 가서 이것이 무슨 일이며 무엇 때문인가 알아보라 하매

에4:6 하닥이 대귈 문 앞 성 중 광장에 있는 모르드개에게 이르니

에4:7 모르드개가 자기가 당한 모든 일과 하만이 유다인을 멸하려고 왕의 금고에 바치기로 한 은의 정확한 액수를 하닥에게 말하고

에4:8 또 유다인을 진멸하라고 수산 궁에서 내린 조서 초본을 하닥에게 주어 에스더에게 보여 알게 하고 또 그에게 부탁하여 왕에게 나아가서 그 앞에서 자기 민족을 위하여 간절히 구하라 하니

에4:9 하닥이 돌아와 모르드개의 말을 에스더에게 알리매

에4:10 에스더가 하닥에게 이르되 너는 모르드개에게 전하기를

에4:11 왕의 신하들과 왕의 각 지방 백성이 다 알거니와 남녀를 막론하고 부름을 받지 아니하고 안뜰에 들어가서 왕에게 나가면 오직 죽이는 법이요 왕이 그 자에게 금 규를 내밀어야 살 것이라 이제 내가 부름을 입어 왕에게 나가지 못한 지가 이미 삼십 일이라 하라 하니라

에4:12 그가 에스더의 말을 모르드개에게 전하매

에4:13 모르드개가 그를 시켜 에스더에게 회답하되 너는 왕궁에 있으니 모든 유다인 중에 홀로 목숨을 건지리라 생각하지 말라

에4:14 이 때에 네가 만일 잠잠하여 말이 없으면 유다인은 다른 데로 말미암아 놓임과 구원을 얻으려니와 너와 네 아버지 집은 멸망하리라 네가 왕후의 자리를 얻은 것이 이 때를 위함이 아닌지 누가 알겠느냐 하니

에4:15 에스더가 모르드개에게 회답하여 이르되

에4:16 당신은 가서 수산에 있는 유다인을 다 모으고 나를 위하여 금식하되 밤낮 삼 일을 먹지도 말고 마시지도 마소서 나도 나의 시녀와 더불어 이렇게 금식한 후에 규례를 어기고 왕에게 나아가리니 죽으면 죽으리이다 하니라

에4:17 모르드개가 가서 에스더가 명령한 대로 다 행하니라

사도행전 27 장.

행27:1 우리가 배를 타고 이달리야에 가기로 작정되매 바울과 다른 죄수 몇 사람을 아구스도 대의 백부장 율리오란 사람에게 맡기니

행27:2 아시아 해변 각처로 가려 하는 아드라뭇데노 배에 우리가 올라 항해할새 마게도냐의 데살로니가 사람 아리스다고도 함께 하니라

행27:3 이튿날 시돈에 대니 율리오가 바울을 친절히 대하여 친구들에게 가서 대접 받기를 허락하더니

행27:4 또 거기서 우리가 떠나가다가 맞바람을 피하여 구브로 해안을 의지하고 항해하여

행27:5 길리기아와 밤빌리아 바다를 건너 루기아의 무라 시에 이르러

행27:6 거기서 백부장이 이달리야로 가려 하는 알렉산드리아 배를 만나 우리를 오르게 하니

행27:7 배가 더디 가 여러 날 만에 간신히 니도 맞은편에 이르러 풍세가 더 허락하지 아니하므로 살모네 앞을 지나 그레데 해안을 바람막이로 항해하여

행27:8 간신히 그 연안을 지나 미항이라는 곳에 이르니 라새아 시에서 가깝더라

행27:9 여러 날이 걸려 금식하는 절기가 이미 지났으므로 항해하기가 위태한지라 바울이 그들을 권하여

행27:10 말하되 여러분이여 내가 보니 이번 항해가 하물과 배만 아니라 우리 생명에도 타격과 많은 손해를 끼치리라 하되

행27:11 백부장이 선장과 선주의 말을 바울의 말보다 더 믿더라

행27:12 그 항구가 겨울을 지내기에 불편하므로 거기서 떠나 아무쪼록 뵈닉스에 가서 겨울을 지내자 하는 자가 더 많으니 뵈닉스는 그레데 항구라 한 쪽은 서남을, 한 쪽은 서북을 향하였더라

행27:13 남풍이 순하게 불매 그들이 뜻을 이룬 줄 알고 닻을 감아 그레데 해변을 끼고 항해하더니

행27:14 얼마 안 되어 섬 가운데로부터 유라굴로라는 광풍이 크게 일어나니

행27:15 배가 밀려 바람을 맞추어 갈 수 없어 가는 대로 두고 쫓겨가다가

행27:16 가우다라는 작은 섬 아래로 지나 간신히 거루를 잡아

행27:17 끌어 올리고 줄을 가지고 선체를 둘러 감고 스르디스에 걸릴까 두려워하여 연장을 내리고 그냥 쫓겨가더니

행27:18 우리가 풍랑으로 심히 애쓰다가 이튿날 사공들이 짐을 바다에 풀어 버리고

행27:19 사흘째 되는 날에 배의 기구를 그들 손으로 내버리니라

행27:20 여러 날 동안 해도 별도 보이지 아니하고 큰 풍랑이 그대로 있으매 구원의 여망마저 없어졌더라

행27:21 여러 사람이 오래 먹지 못하였으매 바울이 가운데 서서 말하되 여러분이여 내 말을 듣고 그레데에서 떠나지 아니하여 이 타격과 손상을 면하였더라면 좋을 뻔하였느니라

행27:22 내가 너희를 권하노니 이제는 안심하라 너희 중 아무도 생명에는 아무런 손상이 없겠고 오직 배뿐이리라

행27:23 나의 속한 바 곧 나의 섬기는 하나님의 사자가 어제 밤에 내 곁에 서서 말하되

행27:24 바울아 두려워하지 말라 네가 가이사 앞에 서야 하겠고 또 하나님께서 너와 함께 항해하는 자를 다 네게 주셨다 하였으니

행27:25 그러므로 여러분이여 안심하라 나는 내게 말씀하신 그대로 되리라고 하나님을 믿노라

행27:26 그런즉 우리가 반드시 한 섬에 걸리리라 하더라

행27:27 열나흘째 되는 날 밤에 우리가 아드리아 바다에서 이리저리 쫓겨가다가 자정쯤 되어 사공들이 어느 육지에 가까워지는 줄을 짐작하고

행27:28 물을 재어 보니 스무 길이 되고 조금 가다가 다시 재니 열다섯 길이라

행27:29 암초에 걸릴까 하여 고물로 닻 넷을 내리고 날이 새기를 고대하니라

행27:30 사공들이 도망하고자 하여 이물에서 닻을 내리는 체하고 거룻배를 바다에 내려 놓거늘

행27:31 바울이 백부장과 군인들에게 이르되 이 사람들이 배에 있지 아니하면 너희가 구원을 얻지 못하리라 하니

행27:32 이에 군사들이 거룻줄을 끊어 떼어 버리니라

행27:33 날이 새어 가매 바울이 여러 사람에게 음식 먹기를 권하여 이르되 너희가 기다리고 기다리며 먹지 못하고 주린 지가 오늘까지 열나흘인즉

행27:34 음식 먹기를 권하노니 이것이 너희의 구원을 위하는 것이요 너희 중 머리카락 하나도 잃을 자가 없으리라 하고

행27:35 떡을 가져다가 모든 사람 앞에서 하나님께 축사하고 떼어 먹기를 시작하매

행27:36 그들도 다 안심하고 받아 먹으니

행27:37 배에 있는 우리의 수는 전부 이백칠십육 명이더라

행27:38 배부르게 먹고 밀을 바다에 버려 배를 가볍게 하였더니

행27:39 날이 새매 어느 땅인지 알지 못하나 경사진 해안으로 된 항만이 눈에 띄거늘 배를 거기에 들여다 댈 수 있는가 의논한 후

행27:40 닻을 끊어 바다에 버리는 동시에 키를 풀어 늦추고 돛을 달고 바람에 맞추어 해안을 향하여 들어가다가

행27:41 두 물이 합하여 흐르는 곳을 만나 배를 걸매 이물은 부딪혀 움직일 수 없이 붙고 고물은 큰 물결에 깨어져 가니

행27:42 군사들은 죄수가 헤엄쳐서 도망할까 하여 그들을 죽이는 것이 좋다 하였으나

행27:43 백부장이 바울을 구원하려 하여 그들의 뜻을 막고 헤엄칠 줄 아는 사람들을 명하여 물에 뛰어내려 먼저 육지에 나가게 하고

행27:44 그 남은 사람들은 널조각 혹은 배 물건에 의지하여 나가게 하니 마침내 사람들이 다 상륙하여 구조되니라

Genesis 28.

28:1 So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him and commanded him: "Do not marry a Canaanite woman.

28:2 Go at once to Paddan Aram, to the house of your mother's father Bethuel. Take a wife for yourself there, from among the daughters of Laban, your mother's brother.

28:3 May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community of peoples.

28:4 May he give you and your descendants the blessing given to Abraham, so that you may take possession of the land where you now live as an alien, the land God gave to Abraham."

28:5 Then Isaac sent Jacob on his way, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laban son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, who was the mother of Jacob and Esau.

28:6 Now Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and had sent him to Paddan Aram to take a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, "Do not marry a Canaanite woman,"

28:7 and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram.

28:8 Esau then realized how displeasing the Canaanite women were to his father Isaac;

28:9 so he went to Ishmael and married Mahalath, the sister of Nebaioth and daughter of Ishmael son of Abraham, in addition to the wives he already had.

28:10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran.

28:11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.

28:12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

28:13 There above it stood the LORD, and he said: "I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.

28:14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.

28:15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you."

28:16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it."

28:17 He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven."

28:18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it.

28:19 He called that place Bethel, though the city used to be called Luz.

28:20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear

28:21 so that I return safely to my father's house, then the LORD will be my God

28:22 and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth."

Matthew 27.

27:1 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people came to the decision to put Jesus to death.

27:2 They bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate, the governor.

27:3 When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders.

27:4 "I have sinned," he said, "for I have betrayed innocent blood." "What is that to us?" they replied. "That's your responsibility."

27:5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

27:6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, "It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money."

27:7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners.

27:8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day.

27:9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "They took the thirty silver coins, the price set on him by the people of Israel,

27:10 and they used them to buy the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me."

27:11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied.

27:12 When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.

27:13 Then Pilate asked him, "Don't you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?"

27:14 But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge--to the great amazement of the governor.

27:15 Now it was the governor's custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd.

27:16 At that time they had a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas.

27:17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, "Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?"

27:18 For he knew it was out of envy that they had handed Jesus over to him.

27:19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him this message: "Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him."

27:20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.

27:21 "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" asked the governor. "Barabbas," they answered.

27:22 "What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?" Pilate asked. They all answered, "Crucify him!"

27:23 "Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"

27:24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. "I am innocent of this man's blood," he said. "It is your responsibility!"

27:25 All the people answered, "Let his blood be on us and on our children!"

27:26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

27:27 Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him.

27:28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,

27:29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and knelt in front of him and mocked him. "Hail, king of the Jews!" they said.

27:30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.

27:31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

27:32 As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.

27:33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull).

27:34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.

27:35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

27:36 And sitting down, they kept watch over him there.

27:37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

27:38 Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.

27:39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads

27:40 and saying, "You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!"

27:41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him.

27:42 "He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself! He's the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.

27:43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"

27:44 In the same way the robbers who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

27:45 From the sixth hour until the ninth hour darkness came over all the land.

27:46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"--which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

27:47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, "He's calling Elijah."

27:48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink.

27:49 The rest said, "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to save him."

27:50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.

27:51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split.

27:52 The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.

27:53 They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

27:54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son of God!"

27:55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.

27:56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.

27:57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus.

27:58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.

27:59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

27:60 and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.

27:61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.

27:62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate.

27:63 "Sir," they said, "we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, 'After three days I will rise again.'

27:64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first."

27:65 "Take a guard," Pilate answered. "Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how."

27:66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.

Esther 4.

4:1 When Mordecai learned of all that had been done, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the city, wailing loudly and bitterly.

4:2 But he went only as far as the king's gate, because no one clothed in sackcloth was allowed to enter it.

4:3 In every province to which the edict and order of the king came, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping and wailing. Many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

4:4 When Esther's maids and eunuchs came and told her about Mordecai, she was in great distress. She sent clothes for him to put on instead of his sackcloth, but he would not accept them.

4:5 Then Esther summoned Hathach, one of the king's eunuchs assigned to attend her, and ordered him to find out what was troubling Mordecai and why.

4:6 So Hathach went out to Mordecai in the open square of the city in front of the king's gate.

4:7 Mordecai told him everything that had happened to him, including the exact amount of money Haman had promised to pay into the royal treasury for the destruction of the Jews.

4:8 He also gave him a copy of the text of the edict for their annihilation, which had been published in Susa, to show to Esther and explain it to her, and he told him to urge her to go into the king's presence to beg for mercy and plead with him for her people.

4:9 Hathach went back and reported to Esther what Mordecai had said.

4:10 Then she instructed him to say to Mordecai,

4:11 "All the king's officials and the people of the royal provinces know that for any man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned the king has but one law: that he be put to death. The only exception to this is for the king to extend the gold scepter to him and spare his life. But thirty days have passed since I was called to go to the king."

4:12 When Esther's words were reported to Mordecai,

4:13 he sent back this answer: "Do not think that because you are in the king's house you alone of all the Jews will escape.

4:14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father's family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?"

4:15 Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai:

4:16 "Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish."

4:17 So Mordecai went away and carried out all of Esther's instructions.

Acts (of the Apostles) 27.

27:1 When it was decided that we would sail for Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handed over to a centurion named Julius, who belonged to the Imperial Regiment.

27:2 We boarded a ship from Adramyttium about to sail for ports along the coast of the province of Asia, and we put out to sea. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was with us.

27:3 The next day we landed at Sidon; and Julius, in kindness to Paul, allowed him to go to his friends so they might provide for his needs.

27:4 From there we put out to sea again and passed to the lee of Cyprus because the winds were against us.

27:5 When we had sailed across the open sea off the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we landed at Myra in Lycia.

27:6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship sailing for Italy and put us on board.

27:7 We made slow headway for many days and had difficulty arriving off Cnidus. When the wind did not allow us to hold our course, we sailed to the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone.

27:8 We moved along the coast with difficulty and came to a place called Fair Havens, near the town of Lasea.

27:9 Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Fast. So Paul warned them,

27:10 "Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also."

27:11 But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship.

27:12 Since the harbor was unsuitable to winter in, the majority decided that we should sail on, hoping to reach Phoenix and winter there. This was a harbor in Crete, facing both southwest and northwest.

27:13 When a gentle south wind began to blow, they thought they had obtained what they wanted; so they weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete.

27:14 Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the "northeaster," swept down from the island.

27:15 The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along.

27:16 As we passed to the lee of a small island called Cauda, we were hardly able to make the lifeboat secure.

27:17 When the men had hoisted it aboard, they passed ropes under the ship itself to hold it together. Fearing that they would run aground on the sandbars of Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor and let the ship be driven along.

27:18 We took such a violent battering from the storm that the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard.

27:19 On the third day, they threw the ship's tackle overboard with their own hands.

27:20 When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved.

27:21 After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: "Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss.

27:22 But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed.

27:23 Last night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve stood beside me

27:24 and said, 'Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.'

27:25 So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me.

27:26 Nevertheless, we must run aground on some island."

27:27 On the fourteenth night we were still being driven across the Adriatic Sea, when about midnight the sailors sensed they were approaching land.

27:28 They took soundings and found that the water was a hundred and twenty feet deep. A short time later they took soundings again and found it was ninety feet deep.

27:29 Fearing that we would be dashed against the rocks, they dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for daylight.

27:30 In an attempt to escape from the ship, the sailors let the lifeboat down into the sea, pretending they were going to lower some anchors from the bow.

27:31 Then Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, "Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved."

27:32 So the soldiers cut the ropes that held the lifeboat and let it fall away.

27:33 Just before dawn Paul urged them all to eat. "For the last fourteen days," he said, "you have been in constant suspense and have gone without food--you haven't eaten anything.

27:34 Now I urge you to take some food. You need it to survive. Not one of you will lose a single hair from his head."

27:35 After he said this, he took some bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all. Then he broke it and began to eat.

27:36 They were all encouraged and ate some food themselves.

27:37 Altogether there were 276 of us on board.

27:38 When they had eaten as much as they wanted, they lightened the ship by throwing the grain into the sea.

27:39 When daylight came, they did not recognize the land, but they saw a bay with a sandy beach, where they decided to run the ship aground if they could.

27:40 Cutting loose the anchors, they left them in the sea and at the same time untied the ropes that held the rudders. Then they hoisted the foresail to the wind and made for the beach.

27:41 But the ship struck a sandbar and ran aground. The bow stuck fast and would not move, and the stern was broken to pieces by the pounding of the surf.

27:42 The soldiers planned to kill the prisoners to prevent any of them from swimming away and escaping.

27:43 But the centurion wanted to spare Paul's life and kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land.

27:44 The rest were to get there on planks or on pieces of the ship. In this way everyone reached land in safety.
