창세기 27 장.

창27:1 이삭이 나이가 많아 눈이 어두워 잘 보지 못하더니 맏아들 에서를 불러 이르되 내 아들아 하매 그가 이르되 내가 여기 있나이다 하니

창27:2 이삭이 이르되 내가 이제 늙어 어느 날 죽을는지 알지 못하니

창27:3 그런즉 네 기구 곧 화살통과 활을 가지고 들에 가서 나를 위하여 사냥하여

창27:4 내가 즐기는 별미를 만들어 내게로 가져와서 먹게 하여 내가 죽기 전에 내 마음껏 네게 축복하게 하라

창27:5 이삭이 그의 아들 에서에게 말할 때에 리브가가 들었더니 에서가 사냥하여 오려고 들로 나가매

창27:6 리브가가 그의 아들 야곱에게 말하여 이르되 네 아버지가 네 형 에서에게 말씀하시는 것을 내가 들으니 이르시기를

창27:7 나를 위하여 사냥하여 가져다가 별미를 만들어 내가 먹게 하여 죽기 전에 여호와 앞에서 네게 축복하게 하라 하셨으니

창27:8 그런즉 내 아들아 내 말을 따라 내가 네게 명하는 대로

창27:9 염소 떼에 가서 거기서 좋은 염소 새끼 두 마리를 내게로 가져오면 내가 그것으로 네 아버지를 위하여 그가 즐기시는 별미를 만들리니

창27:10 네가 그것을 네 아버지께 가져다 드려서 그가 죽기 전에 네게 축복하기 위하여 잡수시게 하라

창27:11 야곱이 그 어머니 리브가에게 이르되 내 형 에서는 털이 많은 사람이요 나는 매끈매끈한 사람인즉

창27:12 아버지께서 나를 만지실진대 내가 아버지의 눈에 속이는 자로 보일지라 복은 고사하고 저주를 받을까 하나이다

창27:13 어머니가 그에게 이르되 내 아들아 너의 저주는 내게로 돌리리니 내 말만 따르고 가서 가져오라

창27:14 그가 가서 끌어다가 어머니에게로 가져왔더니 그의 어머니가 그의 아버지가 즐기는 별미를 만들었더라

창27:15 리브가가 집 자기에게 있는 그의 맏아들 에서의 좋은 의복을 가져다가 그의 작은아들 야곱에게 입히고

창27:16 또 염소 새끼의 가죽을 그의 손과 목의 매끈매끈한 곳에 입히고

창27:17 자기가 만든 별미와 떡을 자기 아들 야곱의 손에 주니

창27:18 야곱이 아버지에게 나아가서 내 아버지여 하고 부르니 이르되 내가 여기 있노라 내 아들아 네가 누구냐

창27:19 야곱이 아버지에게 대답하되 나는 아버지의 맏아들 에서로소이다 아버지께서 내게 명하신 대로 내가 하였사오니 원하건대 일어나 앉아서 내가 사냥한 고기를 잡수시고 아버지 마음껏 내게 축복하소서

창27:20 이삭이 그의 아들에게 이르되 내 아들아 네가 어떻게 이같이 속히 잡았느냐 그가 이르되 아버지의 하나님 여호와께서 나로 순조롭게 만나게 하셨음이니이다

창27:21 이삭이 야곱에게 이르되 내 아들아 가까이 오라 네가 과연 내 아들 에서인지 아닌지 내가 너를 만져보려 하노라

창27:22 야곱이 그 아버지 이삭에게 가까이 가니 이삭이 만지며 이르되 음성은 야곱의 음성이나 손은 에서의 손이로다 하며

창27:23 그의 손이 형 에서의 손과 같이 털이 있으므로 분별하지 못하고 축복하였더라

창27:24 이삭이 이르되 네가 참 내 아들 에서냐 그가 대답하되 그러하니이다

창27:25 이삭이 이르되 내게로 가져오라 내 아들이 사냥한 고기를 먹고 내 마음껏 네게 축복하리라 야곱이 그에게로 가져가매 그가 먹고 또 포도주를 가져가매 그가 마시고

창27:26 그의 아버지 이삭이 그에게 이르되 내 아들아 가까이 와서 내게 입맞추라

창27:27 그가 가까이 가서 그에게 입맞추니 아버지가 그의 옷의 향취를 맡고 그에게 축복하여 이르되 내 아들의 향취는 여호와께서 복 주신 밭의 향취로다

창27:28 하나님은 하늘의 이슬과 땅의 기름짐이며 풍성한 곡식과 포도주를 네게 주시기를 원하노라

창27:29 만민이 너를 섬기고 열국이 네게 굴복하리니 네가 형제들의 주가 되고 네 어머니의 아들들이 네게 굴복하며 너를 저주하는 자는 저주를 받고 너를 축복하는 자는 복을 받기를 원하노라

창27:30 이삭이 야곱에게 축복하기를 마치매 야곱이 그의 아버지 이삭 앞에서 나가자 곧 그의 형 에서가 사냥하여 돌아온지라

창27:31 그가 별미를 만들어 아버지에게로 가지고 가서 이르되 아버지여 일어나서 아들이 사냥한 고기를 잡수시고 마음껏 내게 축복하소서

창27:32 그의 아버지 이삭이 그에게 이르되 너는 누구냐 그가 대답하되 나는 아버지의 아들 곧 아버지의 맏아들 에서로소이다

창27:33 이삭이 심히 크게 떨며 이르되 그러면 사냥한 고기를 내게 가져온 자가 누구냐 네가 오기 전에 내가 다 먹고 그를 위하여 축복하였은즉 그가 반드시 복을 받을 것이니라

창27:34 에서가 그의 아버지의 말을 듣고 소리 내어 울며 아버지에게 이르되 내 아버지여 내게 축복하소서 내게도 그리하소서

창27:35 이삭이 이르되 네 아우가 와서 속여 네 복을 빼앗았도다

창27:36 에서가 이르되 그의 이름을 야곱이라 함이 합당하지 아니하니이까 그가 나를 속임이 이것이 두 번째니이다 전에는 나의 장자의 명분을 빼앗고 이제는 내 복을 빼앗았나이다 또 이르되 아버지께서 나를 위하여 빌 복을 남기지 아니하셨나이까

창27:37 이삭이 에서에게 대답하여 이르되 내가 그를 너의 주로 세우고 그의 모든 형제를 내가 그에게 종으로 주었으며 곡식과 포도주를 그에게 주었으니 내 아들아 내가 네게 무엇을 할 수 있으랴

창27:38 에서가 아버지에게 이르되 내 아버지여 아버지가 빌 복이 이 하나 뿐이리이까 내 아버지여 내게 축복하소서 내게도 그리하소서 하고 소리를 높여 우니

창27:39 그 아버지 이삭이 그에게 대답하여 이르되 네 주소는 땅의 기름짐에서 멀고 내리는 하늘 이슬에서 멀 것이며

창27:40 너는 칼을 믿고 생활하겠고 네 아우를 섬길 것이며 네가 매임을 벗을 때에는 그 멍에를 네 목에서 떨쳐버리리라 하였더라

창27:41 그의 아버지가 야곱에게 축복한 그 축복으로 말미암아 에서가 야곱을 미워하여 심중에 이르기를 아버지를 곡할 때가 가까웠은즉 내가 내 아우 야곱을 죽이리라 하였더니

창27:42 맏아들 에서의 이 말이 리브가에게 들리매 이에 사람을 보내어 작은아들 야곱을 불러 그에게 이르되 네 형 에서가 너를 죽여 그 한을 풀려 하니

창27:43 내 아들아 내 말을 따라 일어나 하란으로 가서 내 오라버니 라반에게로 피신하여

창27:44 네 형의 노가 풀리기까지 몇 날 동안 그와 함께 거주하라

창27:45 네 형의 분노가 풀려 네가 자기에게 행한 것을 잊어버리거든 내가 곧 사람을 보내어 너를 거기서 불러오리라 어찌 하루에 너희 둘을 잃으랴

창27:46 리브가가 이삭에게 이르되 내가 헷 사람의 딸들로 말미암아 내 삶이 싫어졌거늘 야곱이 만일 이 땅의 딸들 중에서 아내를 맞이하면 내 삶이 내게 무슨 재미가 있으리이까

마태복음 26 장.

마26:1 예수께서 이 말씀을 다 마치시고 제자들에게 이르시되

마26:2 너희가 아는 바와 같이 이틀이 지나면 유월절이라 인자가 십자가에 못 박히기 위하여 팔리리라 하시더라

마26:3 그 때에 대제사장들과 백성의 장로들이 가야바라 하는 대제사장의 관정에 모여

마26:4 예수를 흉계로 잡아 죽이려고 의논하되

마26:5 말하기를 민란이 날까 하노니 명절에는 하지 말자 하더라

마26:6 예수께서 베다니 나병환자 시몬의 집에 계실 때에

마26:7 한 여자가 매우 귀한 향유 한 옥합을 가지고 나아와서 식사하시는 예수의 머리에 부으니

마26:8 제자들이 보고 분개하여 이르되 무슨 의도로 이것을 허비하느냐

마26:9 이것을 비싼 값에 팔아 가난한 자들에게 줄 수 있었겠도다 하거늘

마26:10 예수께서 아시고 그들에게 이르시되 너희가 어찌하여 이 여자를 괴롭게 하느냐 그가 내게 좋은 일을 하였느니라

마26:11 가난한 자들은 항상 너희와 함께 있거니와 나는 항상 함께 있지 아니하리라

마26:12 이 여자가 내 몸에 이 향유를 부은 것은 내 장례를 위하여 함이니라

마26:13 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 온 천하에 어디서든지 이 복음이 전파되는 곳에서는 이 여자가 행한 일도 말하여 그를 기억하리라 하시니라

마26:14 그 때에 열둘 중의 하나인 가룟 유다라 하는 자가 대제사장들에게 가서 말하되

마26:15 내가 예수를 너희에게 넘겨 주리니 얼마나 주려느냐 하니 그들이 은 삼십을 달아 주거늘

마26:16 그가 그 때부터 예수를 넘겨 줄 기회를 찾더라

마26:17 무교절의 첫날에 제자들이 예수께 나아와서 이르되 유월절 음식 잡수실 것을 우리가 어디서 준비하기를 원하시나이까

마26:18 이르시되 성 안 아무에게 가서 이르되 선생님 말씀이 내 때가 가까이 왔으니 내 제자들과 함께 유월절을 네 집에서 지키겠다 하시더라 하라 하시니

마26:19 제자들이 예수께서 시키신 대로 하여 유월절을 준비하였더라

마26:20 저물 때에 예수께서 열두 제자와 함께 앉으셨더니

마26:21 그들이 먹을 때에 이르시되 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희 중의 한 사람이 나를 팔리라 하시니

마26:22 그들이 몹시 근심하여 각각 여짜오되 주여 나는 아니지요

마26:23 대답하여 이르시되 나와 함께 그릇에 손을 넣는 그가 나를 팔리라

마26:24 인자는 자기에게 대하여 기록된 대로 가거니와 인자를 파는 그 사람에게는 화가 있으리로다 그 사람은 차라리 태어나지 아니하였더라면 제게 좋을 뻔하였느니라

마26:25 예수를 파는 유다가 대답하여 이르되 랍비여 나는 아니지요 대답하시되 네가 말하였도다 하시니라

마26:26 그들이 먹을 때에 예수께서 떡을 가지사 축복하시고 떼어 제자들에게 주시며 이르시되 받아서 먹으라 이것은 내 몸이니라 하시고

마26:27 또 잔을 가지사 감사 기도하시고 그들에게 주시며 이르시되 너희가 다 이것을 마시라

마26:28 이것은 죄 사함을 얻게 하려고 많은 사람을 위하여 흘리는 바 나의 피 곧 언약의 피니라

마26:29 그러나 너희에게 이르노니 내가 포도나무에서 난 것을 이제부터 내 아버지의 나라에서 새 것으로 너희와 함께 마시는 날까지 마시지 아니하리라 하시니라

마26:30 이에 그들이 찬미하고 감람 산으로 나아가니라

마26:31 그 때에 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 오늘 밤에 너희가 다 나를 버리리라 기록된 바 내가 목자를 치리니 양의 떼가 흩어지리라 하였느니라

마26:32 그러나 내가 살아난 후에 너희보다 먼저 갈릴리로 가리라

마26:33 베드로가 대답하여 이르되 모두 주를 버릴지라도 나는 결코 버리지 않겠나이다

마26:34 예수께서 이르시되 내가 진실로 네게 이르노니 오늘 밤 닭 울기 전에 네가 세 번 나를 부인하리라

마26:35 베드로가 이르되 내가 주와 함께 죽을지언정 주를 부인하지 않겠나이다 하고 모든 제자도 그와 같이 말하니라

마26:36 이에 예수께서 제자들과 함께 겟세마네라 하는 곳에 이르러 제자들에게 이르시되 내가 저기 가서 기도할 동안에 너희는 여기 앉아 있으라 하시고

마26:37 베드로와 세베대의 두 아들을 데리고 가실새 고민하고 슬퍼하사

마26:38 이에 말씀하시되 내 마음이 매우 고민하여 죽게 되었으니 너희는 여기 머물러 나와 함께 깨어 있으라 하시고

마26:39 조금 나아가사 얼굴을 땅에 대시고 엎드려 기도하여 이르시되 내 아버지여 만일 할 만하시거든 이 잔을 내게서 지나가게 하옵소서 그러나 나의 원대로 마시옵고 아버지의 원대로 하옵소서 하시고

마26:40 제자들에게 오사 그 자는 것을 보시고 베드로에게 말씀하시되 너희가 나와 함께 한 시간도 이렇게 깨어 있을 수 없더냐

마26:41 시험에 들지 않게 깨어 기도하라 마음에는 원이로되 육신이 약하도다 하시고

마26:42 다시 두 번째 나아가 기도하여 이르시되 내 아버지여 만일 내가 마시지 않고는 이 잔이 내게서 지나갈 수 없거든 아버지의 원대로 되기를 원하나이다 하시고

마26:43 다시 오사 보신즉 그들이 자니 이는 그들의 눈이 피곤함일러라

마26:44 또 그들을 두시고 나아가 세 번째 같은 말씀으로 기도하신 후

마26:45 이에 제자들에게 오사 이르시되 이제는 자고 쉬라 보라 때가 가까이 왔으니 인자가 죄인의 손에 팔리느니라

마26:46 일어나라 함께 가자 보라 나를 파는 자가 가까이 왔느니라

마26:47 말씀하실 때에 열둘 중의 하나인 유다가 왔는데 대제사장들과 백성의 장로들에게서 파송된 큰 무리가 칼과 몽치를 가지고 그와 함께 하였더라

마26:48 예수를 파는 자가 그들에게 군호를 짜 이르되 내가 입맞추는 자가 그이니 그를 잡으라 한지라

마26:49 곧 예수께 나아와 랍비여 안녕하시옵니까 하고 입을 맞추니

마26:50 예수께서 이르시되 친구여 네가 무엇을 하려고 왔는지 행하라 하신대 이에 그들이 나아와 예수께 손을 대어 잡는지라

마26:51 예수와 함께 있던 자 중의 하나가 손을 펴 칼을 빼어 대제사장의 종을 쳐 그 귀를 떨어뜨리니

마26:52 이에 예수께서 이르시되 네 칼을 도로 칼집에 꽂으라 칼을 가지는 자는 다 칼로 망하느니라

마26:53 너는 내가 내 아버지께 구하여 지금 열두 군단 더 되는 천사를 보내시게 할 수 없는 줄로 아느냐

마26:54 내가 만일 그렇게 하면 이런 일이 있으리라 한 성경이 어떻게 이루어지겠느냐 하시더라

마26:55 그 때에 예수께서 무리에게 말씀하시되 너희가 강도를 잡는 것 같이 칼과 몽치를 가지고 나를 잡으러 나왔느냐 내가 날마다 성전에 앉아 가르쳤으되 너희가 나를 잡지 아니하였도다

마26:56 그러나 이렇게 된 것은 다 선지자들의 글을 이루려 함이니라 하시더라 이에 제자들이 다 예수를 버리고 도망하니라

마26:57 예수를 잡은 자들이 그를 끌고 대제사장 가야바에게로 가니 거기 서기관과 장로들이 모여 있더라

마26:58 베드로가 멀찍이 예수를 따라 대제사장의 집 뜰에까지 가서 그 결말을 보려고 안에 들어가 하인들과 함께 앉아 있더라

마26:59 대제사장들과 온 공회가 예수를 죽이려고 그를 칠 거짓 증거를 찾으매

마26:60 거짓 증인이 많이 왔으나 얻지 못하더니 후에 두 사람이 와서

마26:61 이르되 이 사람의 말이 내가 하나님의 성전을 헐고 사흘 동안에 지을 수 있다 하더라 하니

마26:62 대제사장이 일어서서 예수께 묻되 아무 대답도 없느냐 이 사람들이 너를 치는 증거가 어떠하냐 하되

마26:63 예수께서 침묵하시거늘 대제사장이 이르되 내가 너로 살아 계신 하나님께 맹세하게 하노니 네가 하나님의 아들 그리스도인지 우리에게 말하라

마26:64 예수께서 이르시되 네가 말하였느니라 그러나 내가 너희에게 이르노니 이후에 인자가 권능의 우편에 앉아 있는 것과 하늘 구름을 타고 오는 것을 너희가 보리라 하시니

마26:65 이에 대제사장이 자기 옷을 찢으며 이르되 그가 신성 모독 하는 말을 하였으니 어찌 더 증인을 요구하리요 보라 너희가 지금 이 신성 모독 하는 말을 들었도다

마26:66 너희 생각은 어떠하냐 대답하여 이르되 그는 사형에 해당하니라 하고

마26:67 이에 예수의 얼굴에 침 뱉으며 주먹으로 치고 어떤 사람은 손바닥으로 때리며

마26:68 이르되 그리스도야 우리에게 선지자 노릇을 하라 너를 친 자가 누구냐 하더라

마26:69 베드로가 바깥 뜰에 앉았더니 한 여종이 나아와 이르되 너도 갈릴리 사람 예수와 함께 있었도다 하거늘

마26:70 베드로가 모든 사람 앞에서 부인하여 이르되 나는 네가 무슨 말을 하는지 알지 못하겠노라 하며

마26:71 앞문까지 나아가니 다른 여종이 그를 보고 거기 있는 사람들에게 말하되 이 사람은 나사렛 예수와 함께 있었도다 하매

마26:72 베드로가 맹세하고 또 부인하여 이르되 나는 그 사람을 알지 못하노라 하더라

마26:73 조금 후에 곁에 섰던 사람들이 나아와 베드로에게 이르되 너도 진실로 그 도당이라 네 말소리가 너를 표명(表明)한다 하거늘

마26:74 그가 저주하며 맹세하여 이르되 나는 그 사람을 알지 못하노라 하니 곧 닭이 울더라

마26:75 이에 베드로가 예수의 말씀에 닭 울기 전에 네가 세 번 나를 부인하리라 하심이 생각나서 밖에 나가서 심히 통곡하니라

에스더 3 장.

에3:1 그 후에 아하수에로 왕이 아각 사람 함므다다의 아들 하만의 지위를 높이 올려 함께 있 는 모든 대신 위에 두니

에3:2 대궐 문에 있는 왕의 모든 신하들이 다 왕의 명령대로 하만에게 꿇어 절하되 모르드개는 꿇지도 아니하고 절하지도 아니하니

에3:3 대궐문에 있는 왕의 신하들이 모르드개에게 이르되 너는 어찌 하여 왕의 명령을 거역하느냐 하고

에3:4 날마다 권하되 모르드개가 듣지 아니하고 자기는 유다인임을 알렸더니 그들이 모르드개의 일이 어찌 되나 보고자 하여 하만에게 전하였더라

에3:5 하만이 모르드개가 무릎을 꿇지도 아니하고 절하지도 아니함을 보고 매우 노하더니

에3:6 그들이 모르드개의 민족을 하만에게 알리므로 하만이 모르드개만 죽이는 것이 부족하다고 생각하고 아하수에로의 온 나라에 있는 유다인 곧 모르드개의 민족을 다 멸하고자 하더라

에3:7 아하수에로 왕 제십이년 첫째 달 곧 니산월에 무리가 하만 앞에서 날과 달에 대하여 부르 곧 제비를 뽑아 열두째 달 곧 아달월을 얻은지라

에3:8 하만이 아하수에로 왕에게 아뢰되 한 민족이 왕의 나라 각 지방 백성 중에 흩어져 거하는데 그 법률이 만민의 것과 달라서 왕의 법률을 지키지 아니하오니 용납하는 것이 왕에게 무익하니이다

에3:9 왕이 옳게 여기시거든 조서를 내려 그들을 진멸하소서 내가 은 일만 달란트를 왕의 일을 맡은 자의 손에 맡겨 왕의 금고에 드리리이다 하니

에3:10 왕이 반지를 손에서 빼어 유다인의 대적 곧 아각 사람 함므다다의 아들 하만에게 주며

에3:11 이르되 그 은을 네게 주고 그 백성도 그리하노니 너의 소견에 좋을 대로 행하라 하더라

에3:12 첫째 달 십삼일에 왕의 서기관이 소집되어 하만의 명령을 따라 왕의 대신과 각 지방의 관리와 각 민족의 관원에게 아하수에로 왕의 이름으로 조서를 쓰되 곧 각 지방의 문자와 각 민족의 언어로 쓰고 왕의 반지로 인치니라

에3:13 이에 그 조서를 역졸에게 맡겨 왕의 각 지방에 보내니 열두째 달 곧 아달월 십삼일 하루 동안에 모든 유다인을 젊은이 늙은이 어린이 여인들을 막론하고 죽이고 도륙하고 진멸하고 또 그 재산을 탈취하라 하였고

에3:14 이 명령을 각 지방에 전하기 위하여 조서의 초본을 모든 민족에게 선포하여 그 날을 위하여 준비하게 하라 하였더라

에3:15 역졸이 왕의 명령을 받들어 급히 나가매 그 조서가 도성 수산에도 반포되니 왕은 하만과 함께 앉아 마시되 수산 성은 어지럽더라

사도행전 26 장.

행26:1 아그립바가 바울에게 이르되 너를 위하여 말하기를 네게 허락하노라 하니 이에 바울이 손을 들어 변명하되

행26:2 아그립바 왕이여 유대인이 고발하는 모든 일을 오늘 당신 앞에서 변명하게 된 것을 다행히 여기나이다

행26:3 특히 당신이 유대인의 모든 풍속과 문제를 아심이니이다 그러므로 내 말을 너그러이 들으시기를 바라나이다

행26:4 내가 처음부터 내 민족과 더불어 예루살렘에서 젊었을 때 생활한 상황을 유대인이 다 아는 바라

행26:5 일찍부터 나를 알았으니 그들이 증언하려 하면 내가 우리 종교의 가장 엄한 파를 따라 바리새인의 생활을 하였다고 할 것이라

행26:6 이제도 여기 서서 심문 받는 것은 하나님이 우리 조상에게 약속하신 것을 바라는 까닭이니

행26:7 이 약속은 우리 열두 지파가 밤낮으로 간절히 하나님을 받들어 섬김으로 얻기를 바라는 바인데 아그립바 왕이여 이 소망으로 말미암아 내가 유대인들에게 고소를 당하는 것이니이다

행26:8 당신들은 하나님이 죽은 사람을 다시 살리심을 어찌하여 못 믿을 것으로 여기나이까

행26:9 나도 나사렛 예수의 이름을 대적하여 많은 일을 행하여야 될 줄 스스로 생각하고

행26:10 예루살렘에서 이런 일을 행하여 대제사장들에게서 권한을 받아 가지고 많은 성도를 옥에 가두며 또 죽일 때에 내가 찬성 투표를 하였고

행26:11 또 모든 회당에서 여러 번 형벌하여 강제로 모독하는 말을 하게 하고 그들에 대하여 심히 격분하여 외국 성에까지 가서 박해하였고

행26:12 그 일로 대제사장들의 권한과 위임을 받고 다메섹으로 갔나이다

행26:13 왕이여 정오나 되어 길에서 보니 하늘로부터 해보다 더 밝은 빛이 나와 내 동행들을 둘러 비추는지라

행26:14 우리가 다 땅에 엎드러지매 내가 소리를 들으니 히브리 말로 이르되 사울아 사울아 네가 어찌하여 나를 박해하느냐 가시채를 뒷발질하기가 네게 고생이니라

행26:15 내가 대답하되 주여 누구시니이까 주께서 이르시되 나는 네가 박해하는 예수라

행26:16 일어나 너의 발로 서라 내가 네게 나타난 것은 곧 네가 나를 본 일과 장차 내가 네게 나타날 일에 너로 종과 증인을 삼으려 함이니

Genesis 27.

27:1 When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called for Esau his older son and said to him, "My son." "Here I am," he answered.

27:2 Isaac said, "I am now an old man and don't know the day of my death.

27:3 Now then, get your weapons--your quiver and bow--and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.

27:4 Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing before I die."

27:5 Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left for the open country to hunt game and bring it back,

27:6 Rebekah said to her son Jacob, "Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau,

27:7 'Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the LORD before I die.'

27:8 Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you:

27:9 Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it.

27:10 Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing before he dies."

27:11 Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, "But my brother Esau is a hairy man, and I'm a man with smooth skin.

27:12 What if my father touches me? I would appear to be tricking him and would bring down a curse on myself rather than a blessing."

27:13 His mother said to him, "My son, let the curse fall on me. Just do what I say; go and get them for me."

27:14 So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty food, just the way his father liked it.

27:15 Then Rebekah took the best clothes of Esau her older son, which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob.

27:16 She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins.

27:17 Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.

27:18 He went to his father and said, "My father." "Yes, my son," he answered. "Who is it?"

27:19 Jacob said to his father, "I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game so that you may give me your blessing."

27:20 Isaac asked his son, "How did you find it so quickly, my son?" "The LORD your God gave me success," he replied.

27:21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, "Come near so I can touch you, my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not."

27:22 Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, "The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau."

27:23 He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he blessed him.

27:24 "Are you really my son Esau?" he asked. "I am," he replied.

27:25 Then he said, "My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing." Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank.

27:26 Then his father Isaac said to him, "Come here, my son, and kiss me."

27:27 So he went to him and kissed him. When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he blessed him and said, "Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the LORD has blessed.

27:28 May God give you of heaven's dew and of earth's richness--an abundance of grain and new wine.

27:29 May nations serve you and peoples bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed."

27:30 After Isaac finished blessing him and Jacob had scarcely left his father's presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting.

27:31 He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, "My father, sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing."

27:32 His father Isaac asked him, "Who are you?" "I am your son," he answered, "your firstborn, Esau."

27:33 Isaac trembled violently and said, "Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me? I ate it just before you came and I blessed him--and indeed he will be blessed!"

27:34 When Esau heard his father's words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, "Bless me--me too, my father!"

27:35 But he said, "Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing."

27:36 Esau said, "Isn't he rightly named Jacob? He has deceived me these two times: He took my birthright, and now he's taken my blessing!" Then he asked, "Haven't you reserved any blessing for me?"

27:37 Isaac answered Esau, "I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine. So what can I possibly do for you, my son?"

27:38 Esau said to his father, "Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!" Then Esau wept aloud.

27:39 His father Isaac answered him, "Your dwelling will be away from the earth's richness, away from the dew of heaven above.

27:40 You will live by the sword and you will serve your brother. But when you grow restless, you will throw his yoke from off your neck."

27:41 Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, "The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob."

27:42 When Rebekah was told what her older son Esau had said, she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him, "Your brother Esau is consoling himself with the thought of killing you.

27:43 Now then, my son, do what I say: Flee at once to my brother Laban in Haran.

27:44 Stay with him for a while until your brother's fury subsides.

27:45 When your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to him, I'll send word for you to come back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?"

27:46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I'm disgusted with living because of these Hittite women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land, from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living."

Matthew 26.

26:1 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples,

26:2 "As you know, the Passover is two days away--and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified."

26:3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,

26:4 and they plotted to arrest Jesus in some sly way and kill him.

26:5 "But not during the Feast," they said, "or there may be a riot among the people."

26:6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper,

26:7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.

26:8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. "Why this waste?" they asked.

26:9 "This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor."

26:10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me.

26:11 The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me.

26:12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.

26:13 I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."

26:14 Then one of the Twelve--the one called Judas Iscariot--went to the chief priests

26:15 and asked, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" So they counted out for him thirty silver coins.

26:16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

26:17 On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?"

26:18 He replied, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.'"

26:19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.

26:20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve.

26:21 And while they were eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me."

26:22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, "Surely not I, Lord?"

26:23 Jesus replied, "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.

26:24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born."

26:25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, "Surely not I, Rabbi?" Jesus answered, "Yes, it is you."

26:26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body."

26:27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you.

26:28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

26:29 I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom."

26:30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

26:31 Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: "'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'

26:32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."

26:33 Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will."

26:34 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times."

26:35 But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the other disciples said the same.

26:36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."

26:37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled.

26:38 Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."

26:39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

26:40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter.

26:41 "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

26:42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."

26:43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy.

26:44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

26:45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

26:46 Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"

26:47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people.

26:48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him."

26:49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him.

26:50 Jesus replied, "Friend, do what you came for." Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.

26:51 With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

26:52 "Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.

26:53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

26:54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?"

26:55 At that time Jesus said to the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me.

26:56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

26:57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled.

26:58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.

26:59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death.

26:60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward

26:61 and declared, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.'"

26:62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?"

26:63 But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God."

26:64 "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."

26:65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.

26:66 What do you think?" "He is worthy of death," they answered.

26:67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him

26:68 and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?"

26:69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said.

26:70 But he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said.

26:71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to the people there, "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth."

26:72 He denied it again, with an oath: "I don't know the man!"

26:73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, "Surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away."

26:74 Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, "I don't know the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed.

26:75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Esther 3.

3:1 After these events, King Xerxes honored Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, elevating him and giving him a seat of honor higher than that of all the other nobles.

3:2 All the royal officials at the king's gate knelt down and paid honor to Haman, for the king had commanded this concerning him. But Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor.

3:3 Then the royal officials at the king's gate asked Mordecai, "Why do you disobey the king's command?"

3:4 Day after day they spoke to him but he refused to comply. Therefore they told Haman about it to see whether Mordecai's behavior would be tolerated, for he had told them he was a Jew.

3:5 When Haman saw that Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor, he was enraged.

3:6 Yet having learned who Mordecai's people were, he scorned the idea of killing only Mordecai. Instead Haman looked for a way to destroy all Mordecai's people, the Jews, throughout the whole kingdom of Xerxes.

3:7 In the twelfth year of King Xerxes, in the first month, the month of Nisan, they cast the pur (that is, the lot) in the presence of Haman to select a day and month. And the lot fell on the twelfth month, the month of Adar.

3:8 Then Haman said to King Xerxes, "There is a certain people dispersed and scattered among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom whose customs are different from those of all other people and who do not obey the king's laws; it is not in the king's best interest to tolerate them.

3:9 If it pleases the king, let a decree be issued to destroy them, and I will put ten thousand talents of silver into the royal treasury for the men who carry out this business."

3:10 So the king took his signet ring from his finger and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.

3:11 "Keep the money," the king said to Haman, "and do with the people as you please."

3:12 Then on the thirteenth day of the first month the royal secretaries were summoned. They wrote out in the script of each province and in the language of each people all Haman's orders to the king's satraps, the governors of the various provinces and the nobles of the various peoples. These were written in the name of King Xerxes himself and sealed with his own ring.

3:13 Dispatches were sent by couriers to all the king's provinces with the order to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews--young and old, women and little children--on a single day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar, and to plunder their goods.

3:14 A copy of the text of the edict was to be issued as law in every province and made known to the people of every nationality so they would be ready for that day.

3:15 Spurred on by the king's command, the couriers went out, and the edict was issued in the citadel of Susa. The king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Susa was bewildered.

Acts (of the Apostles) 26.

26:1 Then Agrippa said to Paul, "You have permission to speak for yourself." So Paul motioned with his hand and began his defense:

26:2 "King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate to stand before you today as I make my defense against all the accusations of the Jews,

26:3 and especially so because you are well acquainted with all the Jewish customs and controversies. Therefore, I beg you to listen to me patiently.

26:4 "The Jews all know the way I have lived ever since I was a child, from the beginning of my life in my own country, and also in Jerusalem.

26:5 They have known me for a long time and can testify, if they are willing, that according to the strictest sect of our religion, I lived as a Pharisee.

26:6 And now it is because of my hope in what God has promised our fathers that I am on trial today.

26:7 This is the promise our twelve tribes are hoping to see fulfilled as they earnestly serve God day and night. O king, it is because of this hope that the Jews are accusing me.

26:8 Why should any of you consider it incredible that God raises the dead?

26:9 "I too was convinced that I ought to do all that was possible to oppose the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

26:10 And that is just what I did in Jerusalem. On the authority of the chief priests I put many of the saints in prison, and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.

26:11 Many a time I went from one synagogue to another to have them punished, and I tried to force them to blaspheme. In my obsession against them, I even went to foreign cities to persecute them.

26:12 "On one of these journeys I was going to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests.

26:13 About noon, O king, as I was on the road, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, blazing around me and my companions.

26:14 We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.'

26:15 "Then I asked, 'Who are you, Lord?' "'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,' the Lord replied.

26:16 'Now get up and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen of me and what I will show you.

26:17 I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them

26:18 to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'

26:19 "So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven.

26:20 First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and to the Gentiles also, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and prove their repentance by their deeds.

26:21 That is why the Jews seized me in the temple courts and tried to kill me.

26:22 But I have had God's help to this very day, and so I stand here and testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen--

26:23 that the Christ would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would proclaim light to his own people and to the Gentiles."

26:24 At this point Festus interrupted Paul's defense. "You are out of your mind, Paul!" he shouted. "Your great learning is driving you insane."

26:25 "I am not insane, most excellent Festus," Paul replied. "What I am saying is true and reasonable.

26:26 The king is familiar with these things, and I can speak freely to him. I am convinced that none of this has escaped his notice, because it was not done in a corner.

26:27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know you do."

26:28 Then Agrippa said to Paul, "Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?"

26:29 Paul replied, "Short time or long--I pray God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except for these chains."

26:30 The king rose, and with him the governor and Bernice and those sitting with them.

26:31 They left the room, and while talking with one another, they said, "This man is not doing anything that deserves death or imprisonment."

26:32 Agrippa said to Festus, "This man could have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar."
