창세기 26 장.

창26:1 아브라함 때에 첫 흉년이 들었더니 그 땅에 또 흉년이 들매 이삭이 그랄로 가서 블레셋 왕 아비멜렉에게 이르렀더니

창26:2 여호와께서 이삭에게 나타나 이르시되 애굽으로 내려가지 말고 내가 네게 지시하는 땅에 거주하라

창26:3 이 땅에 거류하면 내가 너와 함께 있어 네게 복을 주고 내가 이 모든 땅을 너와 네 자손에게 주리라 내가 네 아버지 아브라함에게 맹세한 것을 이루어

창26:4 네 자손을 하늘의 별과 같이 번성하게 하며 이 모든 땅을 네 자손에게 주리니 네 자손으로 말미암아 천하 만민이 복을 받으리라

창26:5 이는 아브라함이 내 말을 순종하고 내 명령과 내 계명과 내 율례와 내 법도를 지켰음이라 하시니라

창26:6 이삭이 그랄에 거주하였더니

창26:7 그 곳 사람들이 그의 아내에 대하여 물으매 그가 말하기를 그는 내 누이라 하였으니 리브가는 보기에 아리따우므로 그 곳 백성이 리브가로 말미암아 자기를 죽일까 하여 그는 내 아내라 하기를 두려워함이었더라

창26:8 이삭이 거기 오래 거주하였더니 이삭이 그 아내 리브가를 껴안은 것을 블레셋 왕 아비멜렉이 창으로 내다본지라

창26:9 이에 아비멜렉이 이삭을 불러 이르되 그가 분명히 네 아내거늘 어찌 네 누이라 하였느냐 이삭이 그에게 대답하되 내 생각에 그로 말미암아 내가 죽게 될까 두려워하였음이로라

창26:10 아비멜렉이 이르되 네가 어찌 우리에게 이렇게 행하였느냐 백성 중 하나가 네 아내와 동침할 뻔 하였도다 네가 죄를 우리에게 입혔으리라

창26:11 아비멜렉이 이에 모든 백성에게 명하여 이르되 이 사람이나 그의 아내를 범하는 자는 죽이리라 하였더라

창26:12 이삭이 그 땅에서 농사하여 그 해에 백 배나 얻었고 여호와께서 복을 주시므로

창26:13 그 사람이 창대하고 왕성하여 마침내 거부가 되어

창26:14 양과 소가 떼를 이루고 종이 심히 많으므로 블레셋 사람이 그를 시기하여

창26:15 그 아버지 아브라함 때에 그 아버지의 종들이 판 모든 우물을 막고 흙으로 메웠더라

창26:16 아비멜렉이 이삭에게 이르되 네가 우리보다 크게 강성한즉 우리를 떠나라

창26:17 이삭이 그 곳을 떠나 그랄 골짜기에 장막을 치고 거기 거류하며

창26:18 그 아버지 아브라함 때에 팠던 우물들을 다시 팠으니 이는 아브라함이 죽은 후에 블레셋 사람이 그 우물들을 메웠음이라 이삭이 그 우물들의 이름을 그의 아버지가 부르던 이름으로 불렀더라

창26:19 이삭의 종들이 골짜기를 파서 샘 근원을 얻었더니

창26:20 그랄 목자들이 이삭의 목자와 다투어 이르되 이 물은 우리의 것이라 하매 이삭이 그 다툼으로 말미암아 그 우물 이름을 에섹이라 하였으며

창26:21 또 다른 우물을 팠더니 그들이 또 다투므로 그 이름을 싯나라 하였으며

창26:22 이삭이 거기서 옮겨 다른 우물을 팠더니 그들이 다투지 아니하였으므로 그 이름을 르호봇이라 하여 이르되 이제는 여호와께서 우리를 위하여 넓게 하셨으니 이 땅에서 우리가 번성하리로다 하였더라

창26:23 이삭이 거기서부터 브엘세바로 올라갔더니

창26:24 그 밤에 여호와께서 그에게 나타나 이르시되 나는 네 아버지 아브라함의 하나님이니 두려워하지 말라 내 종 아브라함을 위하여 내가 너와 함께 있어 네게 복을 주어 네 자손이 번성하게 하리라 하신지라

창26:25 이삭이 그곳에 제단을 쌓고, 여호와의 이름을 부르며 거기 장막을 쳤더니 이삭의 종들이 거기서도 우물을 팠더라

창26:26 아비멜렉이 그 친구 아훗삿과 군대 장관 비골과 더불어 그랄에서부터 이삭에게로 온지라

창26:27 이삭이 그들에게 이르되 너희가 나를 미워하여 나에게 너희를 떠나게 하였거늘 어찌하여 내게 왔느냐

창26:28 그들이 이르되 여호와께서 너와 함께 계심을 우리가 분명히 보았으므로 우리의 사이 곧 우리와 너 사이에 맹세하여 너와 계약을 맺으리라 말하였노라

창26:29 너는 우리를 해하지 말라 이는 우리가 너를 범하지 아니하고 선한 일만 네게 행하여 네가 평안히 가게 하였음이니라 이제 너는 여호와께 복을 받은 자니라

창26:30 이삭이 그들을 위하여 잔치를 베풀매 그들이 먹고 마시고

창26:31 아침에 일찍이 일어나 서로 맹세한 후에 이삭이 그들을 보내매 그들이 평안히 갔더라

창26:32 그 날에 이삭의 종들이 자기들이 판 우물에 대하여 이삭에게 와서 알리어 이르되 우리가 물을 얻었나이다 하매

창26:33 그가 그 이름을 세바라 한지라 그러므로 그 성읍 이름이 오늘까지 브엘세바더라

창26:34 에서가 사십 세에 헷 족속 브에리의 딸 유딧과 헷 족속 엘론의 딸 바스맛을 아내로 맞이하였더니

창26:35 그들이 이삭과 리브가의 마음에 근심이 되었더라

마태복음 25 장.

마25:1 그 때에 천국은 마치 등을 들고 신랑을 맞으러 나간 열 처녀와 같다 하리니

마25:2 그 중에 다섯은 미련하고 다섯은 슬기 있는 자라

마25:3 미련한 자들은 등을 가지되 기름을 가지지 아니하고

마25:4 슬기 있는 자들은 그릇에 기름을 담아 등과 함께 가져갔더니

마25:5 신랑이 더디 오므로 다 졸며 잘새

마25:6 밤중에 소리가 나되 보라 신랑이로다 맞으러 나오라 하매

마25:7 이에 그 처녀들이 다 일어나 등을 준비할 새

마25:8 미련한 자들이 슬기 있는 자들에게 이르되 우리 등불이 꺼져가니 너희 기름을 좀 나눠 달라 하거늘

마25:9 슬기 있는 자들이 대답하여 이르되 우리와 너희가 쓰기에 다 부족할까 하노니 차라리 파는 자들에게 가서 너희 쓸 것을 사라 하니

마25:10 그들이 사러 간 사이에 신랑이 오므로 준비하였던 자들은 함께 혼인 잔치에 들어가고 문은 닫힌지라

마25:11 그 후에 남은 처녀들이 와서 이르되 주여 주여 우리에게 열어 주소서

마25:12 대답하여 이르되 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 내가 너희를 알지 못하노라 하였느니라

마25:13 그런즉 깨어 있으라 너희는 그 날과 그 때를 알지 못하느니라

마25:14 또 어떤 사람이 타국에 갈 때 그 종들을 불러 자기 소유를 맡김과 같으니

마25:15 각각 그 재능대로 한 사람에게는 금 다섯 달란트를, 한 사람에게는 두 달란트를, 한 사람에게는 한 달란트를 주고 떠났더니

마25:16 다섯 달란트 받은 자는 바로 가서 그것으로 장사하여 또 다섯 달란트를 남기고

마25:17 두 달란트를 받은 자도 그같이 하여 또 두 달란트를 남겼으되

마25:18 한 달란트 받은 자는 가서 땅을 파고 그 주인의 돈을 감추어 두었더니

마25:19 오랜 후에 그 종들의 주인이 돌아와 그들과 결산할새

마25:20 다섯 달란트 받았던 자는 다섯 달란트를 더 가지고 와서 이르되 주인이여 내게 다섯 달란트를 주셨는데 보소서 내가 또 다섯 달란트를 남겼나이다

마25:21 그 주인이 이르되 잘 하였도다 착하고 충성된 종아 네가 적은 일에 충성하였으매 내가 많은 것을 네게 맡기리니 네 주인의 즐거움에 참여할지어다 하고

마25:22 두 달란트 받았던 자도 와서 이르되 주인이여 내게 두 달란트를 주셨는데 보소서 내가 또 두 달란트를 남겼나이다

마25:23 그 주인이 이르되 잘 하였도다 착하고 충성된 종아 네가 적은 일에 충성하였으매 내가 많은 것을 네게 맡기리니 네 주인의 즐거움에 참여할지어다 하고

마25:24 한 달란트 받았던 자는 와서 이르되 주여 당신은 굳은 사람이라 심지 않은 데서 거두고 헤치지 않은 데서 모으는 줄을 내가 알았으므로

마25:25 두려워하여 나가서 당신의 달란트를 땅에 감추어 두었었나이다 보소서 당신의 것을 가지셨나이다

마25:26 그 주인이 대답하여 이르되 악하고 게으른 종아 나는 심지 않은 데서 거두고 헤치지 않은 데서 모으는 줄로 네가 알았느냐

마25:27 그러면 네가 마땅히 내 돈을 취리하는 자들에게나 맡겼다가 내가 돌아와서 내 원금과 이자를 받게 하였을 것이니라

마25:28 그에게서 그 한 달란트를 빼앗아 열 달란트 가진 자에게 주라

마25:29 무릇 있는 자는 받아 풍족하게 되고 없는 자는 그 있는 것까지 빼앗기리라

마25:30 이 무익한 종을 바깥 어두운 데로 내쫓으라 거기서 슬피 울며 이를 갈리라 하니라

마25:31 인자가 자기 영광으로 모든 천사와 함께 올 때에 자기 영광의 보좌에 앉으리니

마25:32 모든 민족을 그 앞에 모으고 각각 구분하기를 목자가 양과 염소를 구분하는 것 같이 하여

마25:33 양은 그 오른편에 염소는 왼편에 두리라

마25:34 그 때에 임금이 그 오른편에 있는 자들에게 이르시되 내 아버지께 복 받을 자들이여 나아와 창세로부터 너희를 위하여 예비된 나라를 상속받으라

마25:35 내가 주릴 때에 너희가 먹을 것을 주었고 목마를 때에 마시게 하였고 나그네 되었을 때에 영접하였고

마25:36 헐벗었을 때에 옷을 입혔고 병들었을 때에 돌보았고 옥에 갇혔을 때에 와서 보았느니라

마25:37 이에 의인들이 대답하여 이르되 주여 우리가 어느 때에 주께서 주리신 것을 보고 음식을 대접하였으며 목마르신 것을 보고 마시게 하였나이까

마25:38 어느 때에 나그네 되신 것을 보고 영접하였으며 헐벗으신 것을 보고 옷 입혔나이까

마25:39 어느 때에 병드신 것이나 옥에 갇히신 것을 보고 가서 뵈었나이까 하리니

마25:40 임금이 대답하여 이르시되 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희가 여기 내 형제 중에 지극히 작은 자 하나에게 한 것이 곧 내게 한 것이니라 하시고

마25:41 또 왼편에 있는 자들에게 이르시되 저주를 받은 자들아 나를 떠나 마귀와 그 사자들을 위하여 예비된 영영한 불에 들어가라

마25:42 내가 주릴 때에 너희가 먹을 것을 주지 아니하였고 목마를 때에 마시게 하지 아니하였고

마25:43 나그네 되었을 때에 영접하지 아니하였고 헐벗었을 때에 옷 입히지 아니하였고 병들었을 때와 옥에 갇혔을 때에 돌보지 아니하였느니라 하시니

마25:44 그들도 대답하여 이르되 주여 우리가 어느 때에 주께서 주리신 것이나 목마르신 것이나 나그네 되신 것이나 헐벗으신 것이나 병드신 것이나 옥에 갇히신 것을 보고 공양하지 아니하더이까

마25:45 이에 임금이 대답하여 이르시되 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 이 지극히 작은 자 하나에게 하지 아니한 것이 곧 내게 하지 아니한 것이니라 하시리니

마25:46 그들은 영벌에, 의인들은 영생에 들어가리라 하시니라

에스더 2 장.

에2:1 그 후에 아하수에로 왕의 노가 그치매 와스디와 그가 행한 일과 그에 대하여 내린 조서 를 생각하거늘

에2:2 왕의 측근 신하들이 아뢰되 왕은 왕을 위하여 아리따운 처녀들을 구하게 하시되

에2:3 전국 각 지방에 관리를 명령하여 아리따운 처녀를 다 도성 수산으로 모아 후궁으로 들여 궁녀를 주관하는 내시 헤개의 손에 맡겨 그 몸을 정결하게 하는 물품을 주게 하시고

에2:4 왕의 눈에 아름다운 처녀를 와스디 대신 왕후로 삼으소서 하니 왕이 그 말을 좋게 여겨 그대로 행하니라

에2:5 도성 수산에 한 유다인이 있으니 이름은 모르드개라 그는 베냐민 자손이니 기스의 증손이요 시므이의 손자요 야일의 아들이라

에2:6 전에 바벨론 왕 느부갓네살이 예루살렘에서 유다 왕 여고냐와 백성을 사로잡아 갈 때에 모르드개도 함께 사로잡혔더라

에2:7 그의 삼촌의 딸 하닷사 곧 에스더는 부모가 없었으나 용모가 곱고 아리따운 처녀라 그의 부모가 죽은 후에 모르드개가 자기 딸 같이 양육하더라

에2:8 왕의 조서와 명령이 반포되매 처녀들이 도성 수산에 많이 모여 헤개의 수하에 나아갈 때에 에스더도 왕궁으로 이끌려 가서 궁녀를 주관하는 헤개의 수하에 속하니

에2:9 헤개가 이 처녀를 좋게 보고 은혜를 베풀어 몸을 정결하게 할 물품과 일용품을 곧 주며 또 왕궁에서 으레 주는 일곱 궁녀를 주고 에스더와 그 궁녀들을 후궁 아름다운 처소로 옮기더라

에2:10 에스더가 자기의 민족과 종족을 말하지 아니하니 이는 모르드개가 명령하여 말하지 말라 하였음이라

에2:11 모르드개가 날마다 후궁 뜰 앞으로 왕래하며 에스더의 안부와 어떻게 될지를 알고자 하였더라

에2:12 처녀마다 차례대로 아하수에로 왕에게 나아가기 전에 여자에 대하여 정한 규례대로 열두 달 동안을 행하되 여섯 달은 몰약 기름을 쓰고 여섯 달은 향품과 여자에게 쓰는 다른 물품을 써서 몸을 정결하게 하는 기한을 마치며

에2:13 처녀가 왕에게 나아갈 때에는 그가 구하는 것을 다 주어 후궁에서 왕궁으로 가지고 가게 하고

에2:14 저녁이면 갔다가 아침에는 둘째 후궁으로 돌아와서 비빈을 주관 하는 내시 사아스가스의 수하에 속하고 왕이 그를 기뻐하여 그의 이름을 부르지 아니하면 다시 왕에게 나아가지 못하더라

에2:15 모르드개의 삼촌 아비하일의 딸 곧 모르드개가 자기의 딸 같이 양육하는 에스더가 차례대로 왕에게 나아갈 때에 궁녀를 주관하는 내시 헤개가 정한 것 외에는 다른 것을 구하지 아니하였으나 모든 보는 자에게 사랑을 받더라

에2:16 아하수에로 왕의 제칠년 시월 곧 데벳월에 에스더가 왕궁에 인도되어 들어가서 왕 앞에 나가니

에2:17 왕이 모든 여자보다 에스더를 더 사랑하므로 그가 모든 처녀보다 왕 앞에 더 은총을 얻은지라 왕이 그의 머리에 관을 씌우고 와스디를 대신하여 왕후로 삼은 후에

에2:18 왕이 크게 잔치를 베푸니 이는 에스더를 위한 잔치라 모든 지방관과 신하들을 위하여 잔치를 베풀고 또 각 지방의 세금을 면제하고 왕의 이름으로 큰 상을 주니라

에2:19 처녀들을 다시 모을 때에는 모르드개가 대궐 문에 앉았더라

에2:20 에스더는 모르드개가 명령한 대로 그 종족과 민족을 말하지 아니하니 그가 모르드개의 명령을 양육 받을 때와 같이 따름이더라

에2:21 모르드개가 대궐 문에 앉았을 때에 문을 지키던 왕의 내시 빅단과 데레스 두 사람이 원한을 품고 아하수에로 왕을 암살하려는 음모를 꾸미는 것을

에2:22 모르드개가 알고 왕후 에스더에게 알리니 에스더가 모르드개의 이름으로 왕에게 아뢴지라

에2:23 조사하여 실증을 얻었으므로 두 사람을 나무에 달고 그 일을 왕 앞에서 궁중 일기에 기록하니라

사도행전 25 장.

행25:1 베스도가 부임한 지 삼 일 후에 가이사랴에서 예루살렘으로 올라가니

행25:2 대제사장들과 유대인 중 높은 사람들이 바울을 고소할새

행25:3 베스도의 호의로 바울을 예루살렘으로 옮기기를 청하니 이는 길에 매복하였다가 그를 죽이고자 함이러라

행25:4 베스도가 대답하여 바울이 가이사랴에 구류된 것과 자기도 멀지않아 떠나갈 것을 말하고

행25:5 또 이르되 너희 중 유력한 자들은 나와 함께 내려가서 그 사람에게 만일 옳지 아니한 일이 있거든 고발하라 하니라

행25:6 베스도가 그들 가운데서 팔 일 혹은 십 일을 지낸 후 가이사랴로 내려가서 이튿날 재판 자리에 앉고 바울을 데려오라 명하니

행25:7 그가 나오매 예루살렘에서 내려온 유대인들이 둘러서서 여러 가지 중대한 사건으로 고발하되 능히 증거를 대지 못한지라

행25:8 바울이 변명하여 이르되 유대인의 율법이나 성전이나 가이사에게나 내가 도무지 죄를 범하지 아니하였노라 하니

행25:9 베스도가 유대인의 마음을 얻고자 하여 바울더러 묻되 네가 예루살렘에 올라가서 이 사건에 대하여 내 앞에서 심문을 받으려느냐

행25:10 바울이 이르되 내가 가이사의 재판 자리 앞에 섰으니 마땅히 거기서 심문을 받을 것이라 당신도 잘 아시는 바와 같이 내가 유대인들에게 불의를 행한 일이 없나이다

행25:11 만일 내가 불의를 행하여 무슨 죽을 죄를 지었으면 죽기를 사양하지 아니할 것이나 만일 이 사람들이 나를 고발하는 것이 다 사실이 아니면 아무도 나를 그들에게 내줄 수 없나이다 내가 가이사께 상소하노라 한대

행25:12 베스도가 배석자들과 상의하고 이르되 네가 가이사에게 상소하였으니 가이사에게 갈 것이라 하니라

행25:13 수일 후에 아그립바 왕과 버니게가 베스도에게 문안하러 가이사랴에 와서

행25:14 여러 날을 있더니 베스도가 바울의 일로 왕에게 고하여 이르되 벨릭스가 한 사람을 구류하여 두었는데

행25:15 내가 예루살렘에 있을 때에 유대인의 대제사장들과 장로들이 그를 고소하여 정죄하기를 청하기에

행25:16 내가 대답하되 무릇 피고가 원고들 앞에서 고소 사건에 대하여 변명할 기회가 있기 전에 내주는 것은 로마 사람의 법이 아니라 하였노라

행25:17 그러므로 그들이 나와 함께 여기 오매 내가 지체하지 아니하고 이튿날 재판 자리에 앉아 명하여 그 사람을 데려왔으나

행25:18 원고들이 서서 나의 짐작하던 것 같은 악행의 혐의는 하나도 제시하지 아니하고

행25:19 오직 자기들의 종교와 또는 예수라 하는 이가 죽은 것을 살아 있다고 바울이 주장하는 그 일에 관한 문제로 고발하는 것 뿐이라

행25:20 내가 이 일에 대하여 어떻게 심리할는지 몰라서 바울에게 묻되 예루살렘에 올라가서 이 일에 심문을 받으려느냐 한즉

행25:21 바울은 황제의 판결을 받도록 자기를 지켜 주기를 호소하므로 내가 그를 가이사에게 보내기까지 지켜 두라 명하였노라 하니

행25:22 아그립바가 베스도에게 이르되 나도 이 사람의 말을 듣고자 하노라 베스도가 이르되 내일 들으시리이다 하더라

행25:23 이튿날 아그립바와 버니게가 크게 위엄을 갖추고 와서 천부장들과 시중의 높은 사람들과 함께 접견 장소에 들어오고 베스도의 명으로 바울을 데려오니

행25:24 베스도가 말하되 아그립바 왕과 여기 같이 있는 여러분이여 당신들이 보는 이 사람은 유대의 모든 무리가 크게 외치되 살려 두지 못할 사람이라고 하여 예루살렘에서와 여기서도 내게 청원하였으나

행25:25 내가 살피건대 죽일 죄를 범한 일이 없더이다 그러나 그가 황제에게 상소한 고로 보내기로 결정하였나이다

행25:26 그에게 대하여 황제께 확실한 사실을 아뢸 것이 없으므로 심문한 후 상소할 자료가 있을까 하여 당신들 앞 특히 아그립바 왕 당신 앞에 그를 내세웠나이다

행25:27 그 죄목도 밝히지 아니하고 죄수를 보내는 것이 무리한 일인 줄 아나이다 하였더라

Genesis 26.

26:1 Now there was a famine in the land--besides the earlier famine of Abraham's time--and Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines in Gerar.

26:2 The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, "Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live.

26:3 Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.

26:4 I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed,

26:5 because Abraham obeyed me and kept my requirements, my commands, my decrees and my laws."

26:6 So Isaac stayed in Gerar.

26:7 When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, "She is my sister," because he was afraid to say, "She is my wife." He thought, "The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful."

26:8 When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing his wife Rebekah.

26:9 So Abimelech summoned Isaac and said, "She is really your wife! Why did you say, 'She is my sister'?" Isaac answered him, "Because I thought I might lose my life on account of her."

26:10 Then Abimelech said, "What is this you have done to us? One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us."

26:11 So Abimelech gave orders to all the people: "Anyone who molests this man or his wife shall surely be put to death."

26:12 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the LORD blessed him.

26:13 The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.

26:14 He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him.

26:15 So all the wells that his father's servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up, filling them with earth.

26:16 Then Abimelech said to Isaac, "Move away from us; you have become too powerful for us."

26:17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar and settled there.

26:18 Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.

26:19 Isaac's servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there.

26:20 But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen and said, "The water is ours!" So he named the well Esek, because they disputed with him.

26:21 Then they dug another well, but they quarreled over that one also; so he named it Sitnah.

26:22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth, saying, "Now the LORD has given us room and we will flourish in the land."

26:23 From there he went up to Beersheba.

26:24 That night the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham."

26:25 Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD. There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.

26:26 Meanwhile, Abimelech had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.

26:27 Isaac asked them, "Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?"

26:28 They answered, "We saw clearly that the LORD was with you; so we said, 'There ought to be a sworn agreement between us'--between us and you. Let us make a treaty with you

26:29 that you will do us no harm, just as we did not molest you but always treated you well and sent you away in peace. And now you are blessed by the LORD."

26:30 Isaac then made a feast for them, and they ate and drank.

26:31 Early the next morning the men swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they left him in peace.

26:32 That day Isaac's servants came and told him about the well they had dug. They said, "We've found water!"

26:33 He called it Shibah, and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.

26:34 When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.

26:35 They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.

Matthew 25.

25:1 "At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.

25:2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise.

25:3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them.

25:4 The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.

25:5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.

25:6 "At midnight the cry rang out: 'Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!'

25:7 "Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.

25:8 The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.'

25:9 "'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.'

25:10 "But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.

25:11 "Later the others also came. 'Sir! Sir!' they said. 'Open the door for us!'

25:12 "But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.'

25:13 "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.

25:14 "Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.

25:15 To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey.

25:16 The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more.

25:17 So also, the one with the two talents gained two more.

25:18 But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money.

25:19 "After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.

25:20 The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.'

25:21 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'

25:22 "The man with the two talents also came. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.'

25:23 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'

25:24 "Then the man who had received the one talent came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed.

25:25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.'

25:26 "His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed?

25:27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

25:28 "'Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents.

25:29 For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.

25:30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

25:31 "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory.

25:32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

25:33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

25:34 "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.

25:35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,

25:36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'

25:37 "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?

25:38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you?

25:39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'

25:40 "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

25:41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

25:42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,

25:43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.'

25:44 "They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?'

25:45 "He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'

25:46 "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

Esther 2.

2:1 Later when the anger of King Xerxes had subsided, he remembered Vashti and what she had done and what he had decreed about her.

2:2 Then the king's personal attendants proposed, "Let a search be made for beautiful young virgins for the king.

2:3 Let the king appoint commissioners in every province of his realm to bring all these beautiful girls into the harem at the citadel of Susa. Let them be placed under the care of Hegai, the king's eunuch, who is in charge of the women; and let beauty treatments be given to them.

2:4 Then let the girl who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti." This advice appealed to the king, and he followed it.

2:5 Now there was in the citadel of Susa a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin, named Mordecai son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish,

2:6 who had been carried into exile from Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, among those taken captive with Jehoiachin king of Judah.

2:7 Mordecai had a cousin named Hadassah, whom he had brought up because she had neither father nor mother. This girl, who was also known as Esther, was lovely in form and features, and Mordecai had taken her as his own daughter when her father and mother died.

2:8 When the king's order and edict had been proclaimed, many girls were brought to the citadel of Susa and put under the care of Hegai. Esther also was taken to the king's palace and entrusted to Hegai, who had charge of the harem.

2:9 The girl pleased him and won his favor. Immediately he provided her with her beauty treatments and special food. He assigned to her seven maids selected from the king's palace and moved her and her maids into the best place in the harem.

2:10 Esther had not revealed her nationality and family background, because Mordecai had forbidden her to do so.

2:11 Every day he walked back and forth near the courtyard of the harem to find out how Esther was and what was happening to her.

2:12 Before a girl's turn came to go in to King Xerxes, she had to complete twelve months of beauty treatments prescribed for the women, six months with oil of myrrh and six with perfumes and cosmetics.

2:13 And this is how she would go to the king: Anything she wanted was given her to take with her from the harem to the king's palace.

2:14 In the evening she would go there and in the morning return to another part of the harem to the care of Shaashgaz, the king's eunuch who was in charge of the concubines. She would not return to the king unless he was pleased with her and summoned her by name.

2:15 When the turn came for Esther (the girl Mordecai had adopted, the daughter of his uncle Abihail) to go to the king, she asked for nothing other than what Hegai, the king's eunuch who was in charge of the harem, suggested. And Esther won the favor of everyone who saw her.

2:16 She was taken to King Xerxes in the royal residence in the tenth month, the month of Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.

2:17 Now the king was attracted to Esther more than to any of the other women, and she won his favor and approval more than any of the other virgins. So he set a royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.

2:18 And the king gave a great banquet, Esther's banquet, for all his nobles and officials. He proclaimed a holiday throughout the provinces and distributed gifts with royal liberality.

2:19 When the virgins were assembled a second time, Mordecai was sitting at the king's gate.

2:20 But Esther had kept secret her family background and nationality just as Mordecai had told her to do, for she continued to follow Mordecai's instructions as she had done when he was bringing her up.

2:21 During the time Mordecai was sitting at the king's gate, Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's officers who guarded the doorway, became angry and conspired to assassinate King Xerxes.

2:22 But Mordecai found out about the plot and told Queen Esther, who in turn reported it to the king, giving credit to Mordecai.

2:23 And when the report was investigated and found to be true, the two officials were hanged on a gallows. All this was recorded in the book of the annals in the presence of the king.

Acts (of the Apostles) 25.

25:1 Three days after arriving in the province, Festus went up from Caesarea to Jerusalem,

25:2 where the chief priests and Jewish leaders appeared before him and presented the charges against Paul.

25:3 They urgently requested Festus, as a favor to them, to have Paul transferred to Jerusalem, for they were preparing an ambush to kill him along the way.

25:4 Festus answered, "Paul is being held at Caesarea, and I myself am going there soon.

25:5 Let some of your leaders come with me and press charges against the man there, if he has done anything wrong."

25:6 After spending eight or ten days with them, he went down to Caesarea, and the next day he convened the court and ordered that Paul be brought before him.

25:7 When Paul appeared, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing many serious charges against him, which they could not prove.

25:8 Then Paul made his defense: "I have done nothing wrong against the law of the Jews or against the temple or against Caesar."

25:9 Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor, said to Paul, "Are you willing to go up to Jerusalem and stand trial before me there on these charges?"

25:10 Paul answered: "I am now standing before Caesar's court, where I ought to be tried. I have not done any wrong to the Jews, as you yourself know very well.

25:11 If, however, I am guilty of doing anything deserving death, I do not refuse to die. But if the charges brought against me by these Jews are not true, no one has the right to hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar!"

25:12 After Festus had conferred with his council, he declared: "You have appealed to Caesar. To Caesar you will go!"

25:13 A few days later King Agrippa and Bernice arrived at Caesarea to pay their respects to Festus.

25:14 Since they were spending many days there, Festus discussed Paul's case with the king. He said: "There is a man here whom Felix left as a prisoner.

25:15 When I went to Jerusalem, the chief priests and elders of the Jews brought charges against him and asked that he be condemned.

25:16 "I told them that it is not the Roman custom to hand over any man before he has faced his accusers and has had an opportunity to defend himself against their charges.

25:17 When they came here with me, I did not delay the case, but convened the court the next day and ordered the man to be brought in.

25:18 When his accusers got up to speak, they did not charge him with any of the crimes I had expected.

25:19 Instead, they had some points of dispute with him about their own religion and about a dead man named Jesus who Paul claimed was alive.

25:20 I was at a loss how to investigate such matters; so I asked if he would be willing to go to Jerusalem and stand trial there on these charges.

25:21 When Paul made his appeal to be held over for the Emperor's decision, I ordered him held until I could send him to Caesar."

25:22 Then Agrippa said to Festus, "I would like to hear this man myself." He replied, "Tomorrow you will hear him."

25:23 The next day Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp and entered the audience room with the high ranking officers and the leading men of the city. At the command of Festus, Paul was brought in.

25:24 Festus said: "King Agrippa, and all who are present with us, you see this man! The whole Jewish community has petitioned me about him in Jerusalem and here in Caesarea, shouting that he ought not to live any longer.

25:25 I found he had done nothing deserving of death, but because he made his appeal to the Emperor I decided to send him to Rome.

25:26 But I have nothing definite to write to His Majesty about him. Therefore I have brought him before all of you, and especially before you, King Agrippa, so that as a result of this investigation I may have something to write.

25:27 For I think it is unreasonable to send on a prisoner without specifying the charges against him."
