창세기 20 장.

창20:1 아브라함이 거기서 네게브 땅으로 옮겨가 가데스와 술 사이 그랄에 거류하며

창20:2 그의 아내 사라를 자기 누이라 하였으므로 그랄 왕 아비멜렉이 사람을 보내어 사라를 데려갔더니

창20:3 그 밤에 하나님이 아비멜렉에게 현몽하시고 그에게 이르시되 네가 데려간 이 여인으로 말미암아 네가 죽으리니 그는 남편이 있는 여자임이라

창20:4 아비멜렉이 그 여인을 가까이 하지 아니하였으므로 그가 대답하되 주여 주께서 의로운 백성도 멸하시나이까

창20:5 그가 나에게 이는 내 누이라고 하지 아니하였나이까 그 여인도 그는 내 오라비라 하였사오니 나는 온전한 마음과 깨끗한 손으로 이렇게 하였나이다

창20:6 하나님이 꿈에 또 그에게 이르시되 네가 온전한 마음으로 이렇게 한 줄을 나도 알았으므로 너를 막아 내게 범죄하지 아니하게 하였나니 여인에게 가까이 하지 못하게 함이 이 때문이니라

창20:7 이제 그 사람의 아내를 돌려보내라 그는 선지자라 그가 너를 위하여 기도하리니 네가 살려니와 네가 돌려보내지 아니하면 너와 네게 속한 자가 다 반드시 죽을 줄 알지니라

창20:8 아비멜렉이 그 날 아침에 일찍이 일어나 모든 종들을 불러 그 모든 일을 말하여 들려주니 그들이 심히 두려워하였더라

창20:9 아비멜렉이 아브라함을 불러서 그에게 이르되 네가 어찌하여 우리에게 이렇게 하느냐 내가 무슨 죄를 네게 범하였기에 네가 나와 내 나라가 큰 죄에 빠질 뻔하게 하였느냐 네가 합당하지 아니한 일을 내게 행하였도다 하고

창20:10 아비멜렉이 또 아브라함에게 이르되 네가 무슨 뜻으로 이렇게 하였느냐

창20:11 아브라함이 이르되 이 곳에서는 하나님을 두려워함이 없으니 내 아내로 말미암아 사람들이나를 죽일까 생각하였음이요

창20:12 또 그는 정말로 나의 이복 누이로서 내 아내가 되었음이니라

창20:13 하나님이 나를 내 아버지의 집을 떠나 두루 다니게 하실 때에 내가 아내에게 말하기를 이후로 우리의 가는 곳마다 그대는 나를 그대의 오라비라 하라 이것이 그대가 내게 베풀 은혜라 하였었노라

창20:14 아비멜렉이 양과 소와 종들을 이끌어 아브라함에게 주고 그의 아내 사라도 그에게 돌려보내고

창20:15 아브라함에게 이르되 내 땅이 네 앞에 있으니 네가 보기에 좋은 대로 거주하라 하고

창20:16 사라에게 이르되 내가 은 천 개를 네 오라비에게 주어서 그것으로 너와 함께 한 여러 사람 앞에서 네 수치를 가리게 하였노니 네 일이 다 해결되었느니라

창20:17 아브라함이 하나님께 기도하매 하나님이 아비멜렉과 그의 아내와 여종을 치료하사 출산하게 하셨으니

창20:18 여호와께서 이왕에 아브라함의 아내 사라의 일로 아비멜렉의 집의 모든 태를 닫으셨음이더라

마태복음 19 장.

마19:1 예수께서 이 말씀을 마치시고 갈릴리를 떠나 요단 강 건너 유대 지경에 이르시니

마19:2 큰 무리가 따르거늘 예수께서 거기서 그들의 병을 고치시더라

마19:3 바리새인들이 예수께 나아와 그를 시험하여 이르되 사람이 어떤 이유가 있으면 그 아내를 버리는 것이 옳으니이까

마19:4 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 사람을 지으신 이가 본래 그들을 남자와 여자로 지으시고

마19:5 말씀하시기를 그러므로 사람이 그 부모를 떠나서 아내에게 합하여 그 둘이 한 몸이 될지니라 하신 것을 읽지 못하였느냐

마19:6 그런즉 이제 둘이 아니요 한 몸이니 그러므로 하나님이 짝지어 주신 것을 사람이 나누지 못할지니라 하시니

마19:7 여짜오되 그러면 어찌하여 모세는 이혼 증서를 주어서 버리라 명하였나이까

마19:8 예수께서 이르시되 모세가 너희 마음의 완악함 때문에 아내 버림을 허락하였거니와 본래는 그렇지 아니하니라

마19:9 내가 너희에게 말하노니 누구든지 음행한 이유 외에 아내를 버리고 다른 데 장가 드는 자는 간음함이니라

마19:10 제자들이 이르되 만일 사람이 아내에게 이같이 할진대 장가 들지 않는 것이 좋겠나이다

마19:11 예수께서 이르시되 사람마다 이 말을 받지 못하고 오직 타고난 자라야 할지니라

마19:12 어머니의 태로부터 된 고자도 있고 사람이 만든 고자도 있고 천국을 위하여 스스로 된 고자도 있도다 이 말을 받을 만한 자는 받을지어다

마19:13 그 때에 사람들이 예수께서 안수하고 기도해 주심을 바라고 어린 아이들을 데리고 오매 제자들이 꾸짖거늘

마19:14 예수께서 이르시되 어린 아이들을 용납하고 내게 오는 것을 금하지 말라 천국이 이런 사람의 것이니라 하시고

마19:15 그들에게 안수하시고 거기를 떠나시니라

마19:16 어떤 사람이 주께 와서 이르되 선생님이여 내가 무슨 선한 일을 하여야 영생을 얻으리이까

마19:17 예수께서 이르시되 어찌하여 선한 일을 내게 묻느냐 선한 이는 오직 한 분이시니라 네가 생명에 들어가려면 계명들을 지키라

마19:18 이르되 어느 계명이오니이까 예수께서 이르시되 살인하지 말라, 간음하지 말라, 도둑질하지 말라, 거짓 증언 하지 말라,

마19:19 네 부모를 공경하라, 네 이웃을 네 자신과 같이 사랑하라 하신 것이니라

마19:20 그 청년이 이르되 이 모든 것을 내가 지키었사온대 아직도 무엇이 부족하니이까

마19:21 예수께서 이르시되 네가 온전하고자 할진대 가서 네 소유를 팔아 가난한 자들에게 주라 그리하면 하늘에서 보화가 네게 있으리라 그리고 와서 나를 따르라 하시니

마19:22 그 청년이 재물이 많으므로 이 말씀을 듣고 근심하며 가니라

마19:23 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 부자는 천국에 들어가기가 어려우니라

마19:24 다시 너희에게 말하노니 낙타가 바늘귀로 들어가는 것이 부자가 하나님의 나라에 들어가는 것보다 쉬우니라 하신대

마19:25 제자들이 듣고 몹시 놀라 이르되 그렇다면 누가 구원을 얻을 수 있으리이까

마19:26 예수께서 그들을 보시며 이르시되 사람으로는 할 수 없으나 하나님으로서는 다 하실 수 있느니라

마19:27 이에 베드로가 대답하여 이르되 보소서 우리가 모든 것을 버리고 주를 따랐사온대 그런즉 우리가 무엇을 얻으리이까

마19:28 예수께서 이르시되 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 세상이 새롭게 되어 인자가 자기 영광의 보좌에 앉을 때에 나를 따르는 너희도 열두 보좌에 앉아 이스라엘 열두 지파를 심판하리라

마19:29 또 내 이름을 위하여 집이나 형제나 자매나 부모나 자식이나 전토를 버린 자마다 여러 배를 받고 또 영생을 상속하리라

마19:30 그러나 먼저 된 자로서 나중 되고 나중 된 자로서 먼저 될 자가 많으니라

느헤미야 9 장.

느9:1 그 달 스무나흗 날에 이스라엘 자손이 다 모여 금식하며 굵은 베 옷을 입고 티끌을 무릅쓰며

느9:2 모든 이방 사람들과 절교하고 서서 자기의 죄와 조상들의 허물을 자복하고

느9:3 이 날에 낮 사분의 일은 그 제자리에 서서 그들의 하나님 여호와의 율법책을 낭독하고 낮 사분의 일은 죄를 자복하며 그들의 하나님 여호와께 경배하는데

느9:4 레위 사람 예수아와 바니와 갓미엘과 스바냐와 분니와 세레뱌와 바니와 그나니는 단에 올라서서 큰 소리로 그들의 하나님 여호와께 부르짖고

느9:5 또 레위 사람 예수아와 갓미엘과 바니와 하삽느야와 세레뱌와 호디야와 스바냐와 브다히야는 이르기를 너희 무리는 마땅히 일어나 영원부터 영원까지 계신 너희 하나님 여호와를 송축할지어다 주여 주의 영화로운 이름을 송축하올 것은 주의 이름이 존귀하여 모든 송축이나 찬양에서 뛰어남이니이다

느9:6 오직 주는 여호와시라 하늘과 하늘들의 하늘과 일월성신과 땅과 땅위의 만물과 바다와 그 가운데 모든 것을 지으시고 다 보존 하시오니 모든 천군이 주께 경배하나이다

느9:7 주는 하나님 여호와시라 옛적에 아브람을 택하시고 갈대아 우르에서 인도하여 내시고 아브라함이라는 이름을 주시고

느9:8 그의 마음이 주 앞에서 충성됨을 보시고 그와 더불어 언약을 세우사 가나안 족속과 헷 족속과 아모리 족속과 브리스 족속과 여부스 족속과 기르가스 족속의 땅을 그의 씨에게 주리라 하시더니 그 말씀대로 이루셨사오매 주는 의로우심이로소이다

느9:9 주께서 우리 조상들이 애굽에서 고난받는 것을 감찰하시며 홍해에서 그들의 부르짖음을 들으시고

느9:10 이적과 기사를 베푸사 바로와 그의 모든 신하와 그의 나라 온 백성을 치셨사오니 이는 그들이 우리의 조상들에게 교만하게 행함을 아셨음이라 주께서 오늘과 같이 명예를 얻으셨나이다

느9:11 또 주께서 우리 조상들 앞에서 바다를 갈라지게 하사 그들이 바다 가운데를 육지 같이 통과하게 하시고 쫓아오는 자들을 돌을 큰 물에 던짐 같이 깊은 물에 던지시고

느9:12 낮에는 구름 기둥으로 인도하시고 밤에는 불 기둥으로 그들이 행할 길을 그들에게 비추셨사오며

느9:13 또 시내 산에 강림하시고 하늘에서부터 그들과 말씀하사 정직한 규례와 진정한 율법과 선한 율례와 계명을 그들에게 주시고

느9:14 거룩한 안식일을 그들에게 알리시며 주의 종 모세를 통하여 계명과 율례와 율법을 그들에게 명령하시고

느9:15 그들의 굶주림 때문에 그들에게 양식을 주시며 그들의 목마름 때문에 그들에게 반석에서 물을 내시고 또 주께서 옛적에 손을 들어 맹세하시고 주겠다고 하신 땅을 들어가서 차지하라 말씀하셨사오나

느9:16 그들과 우리 조상들이 교만하고 목을 굳게 하여 주의 명령을 듣지 아니하고

느9:17 거역하며 주께서 그들 가운데에서 행하신 기사를 기억하지 아니하고 목을 굳게 하며 패역하여 스스로 한 우두머리를 세우고 종 되었던 땅으로 돌아가고자 하였나이다 그러나 주께서는 용서하시는 하나님이시라 은혜로우시며 긍휼히 여기시며 더디 노하시며 인자가 풍부하시므로 그들을 버리지 아니하셨나이다

느9:18 또 그들이 자기들을 위하여 송아지를 부어만들고 이르기를 이는 곧 너희를 인도하여 애굽에서 나오게 한 신이라 하여 하나님을 크게 모독하였사오나

느9:19 주께서는 주의 크신 긍휼로 그들을 광야에 버리지 아니하시고 낮에는 구름 기둥이 그들에게서 떠나지 아니하고 길을 인도하며 밤에는 불 기둥이 그들이 갈 길을 비추게 하셨사오며

느9:20 또 주의 선한 영을 주사 그들을 가르치시며 주의 만나가 그들의 입에서 끊어지지 않게 하시고 그들의 목마름을 인하여 그들에게 물을 주어

느9:21 사십 년 동안 들에서 기르시되 부족함이 없게 하시므로 그 옷이 해어지지 아니하였고 발이 부르트지 아니하였사오며

느9:22 또 나라들과 족속들을 그들에게 각각 나누어 주시매 그들이 시혼의 땅 곧 헤스본 왕의 땅과 바산 왕 옥의 땅을 차지하였나이다

느9:23 주께서 그들의 자손을 하늘의 별 같이 많게 하시고 전에 그들의 열조에게 들어가서 차지하라고 말씀하신 땅으로 인도하여 이르게 하셨으므로

느9:24 그 자손이 들어가서 땅을 차지하되 주께서 그 땅 가나안 주민들이 그들 앞에 복종하게 하실 때에 가나안 사람들과 그들의 왕들과 본토 여러 족속들을 그들의 손에 넘겨 임의로 행하게 하시매

느9:25 그들이 견고한 성읍들과 기름진 땅을 점령하고 모든 아름다운 물건이 가득한 집과 판 우물과 포도원과 감람원과 허다한 과목을 차지하여 배불리 먹어 살찌고 주의 큰 복을 즐겼사오나

느9:26 그들은 순종하지 아니하고 주를 거역하며 주의 율법을 등지고 주께로 돌아오기를 권면하는 선지자들을 죽여 주를 심히 모독하였나이다

느9:27 그러므로 주께서 그들을 대적의 손에 넘기사 그들이 곤고를 당하게 하시매 그들이 환난을 당하여 주께 부르짖을 때에 주께서 하늘에서 들으시고 주의 크신 긍휼로 그들에게 구원자들을 주어 그들을 대적의 손에서 구원하셨거늘

느9:28 그들이 평강을 얻은 후에 다시 주 앞에서 악을 행하므로 주께서 그들을 원수들의 손에 버려 두사 원수들에게 지배를 당하게 하시다가 그들이 돌이켜 주께 부르짖으매 주께서 하늘에서 들으시고 여러 번 주의 긍휼로 건져내시고

느9:29 다시 주의 율법을 복종하게 하시려고 그들에게 경계하셨으나 그들이 교만하여 사람이 준행하면 그 가운데에서 삶을 얻는 주의 계명을 듣지 아니하며 주의 규례를 범하여 고집하는 어깨를 내밀며 목을 굳게 하여 듣지 아니하였나이다

느9:30 그러나 주께서 그들을 여러 해 동안 참으시고 또 주의 선지자들을 통하여 주의 영으로 그들을 경계하시되 그들이 듣지 아니하므로 열방 사람들의 손에 넘기시고도

느9:31 주의 크신 긍휼로 그들을 아주 멸하지 아니하시며 버리지도 아니하셨사오니 주는 은혜로우시고 불쌍히 여기시는 하나님이심이니이다

느9:32 우리 하나님이여 광대하시고 능하시고 두려우시며 언약과 인자하심을 지키시는 하나님이여 우리와 우리 왕들과 방백들과 제사장들과 선지자들과 조상들과 주의 모든 백성이 앗수르 왕들의 때로부터 오늘까지 당한 모든 환난을 이제 작게 여기지 마옵소서

느9:33 그러나 우리가 당한 모든 일에 주는 공의로우시니 우리는 악을 행하였사오나 주께서는 진실하게 행하셨음이니이다

느9:34 우리 왕들과 방백들과 제사장들과 조상들이 주의 율법을 지키지 아니하며 주의 명령과 주께서 그들에게 경계하신 말씀을 순종하지 아니하고

느9:35 그들이 그 나라와 주께서 그들에게 베푸신 큰 복과 자기 앞에 주신 넓고 기름진 땅을 누리면서도 주를 섬기지 아니하며 악행을 그치지 아니하였으므로

느9:36 우리가 오늘날 종이 되었는데 곧 주께서 우리 조상들에게 주사 그것의 열매를 먹고 그것과 아름다운 소산을 누리게 하신 땅에서 우리가 종이 되었나이다

느9:37 우리의 죄로 말미암아 주께서 우리 위에 세우신 이방 왕들이 이 땅의 많은 소산을 얻고 그들이 우리의 몸과 가축을 임의로 관할하오니 우리의 곤란이 심하오며

느9:38 우리가 이 모든 일로 말미암아 이제 견고한 언약을 세워 기록하고 우리의 방백들과 레위 사람들과 제사장들이 다 인봉하나이다 하였느니라

사도행전 19 장.

행19:1 아볼로가 고린도에 있을 때에 바울이 윗지방으로 다녀 에베소에 와서 어떤 제자들을 만나

행19:2 이르되 너희가 믿을 때에 성령을 받았느냐 이르되 아니라 우리는 성령이 계심도 듣지 못하였노라

행19:3 바울이 이르되 그러면 너희가 무슨 세례를 받았느냐 대답하되 요한의 세례니라

행19:4 바울이 이르되 요한이 회개의 세례를 베풀며 백성에게 말하되 내 뒤에 오시는 이를 믿으라 하였으니 이는 곧 예수라 하거늘

행19:5 그들이 듣고 주 예수의 이름으로 세례를 받으니

행19:6 바울이 그들에게 안수하매 성령이 그들에게 임하시므로 방언도 하고 예언도 하니

행19:7 모두 열두 사람쯤 되니라

행19:8 바울이 회당에 들어가 석 달 동안 담대히 하나님 나라에 관하여 강론하며 권면하되

행19:9 어떤 사람들은 마음이 굳어 순종하지 않고 무리 앞에서 이 도를 비방하거늘 바울이 그들을 떠나 제자들을 따로 세우고 두란노 서원에서 날마다 강론하니라

행19:10 두 해 동안 이같이 하니 아시아에 사는 자는 유대인이나 헬라인이나 다 주의 말씀을 듣더라

행19:11 하나님이 바울의 손으로 놀라운 능력을 행하게 하시니

행19:12 심지어 사람들이 바울의 몸에서 손수건이나 앞치마를 가져다가 병든 사람에게 얹으면 그 병이 떠나고 악귀도 나가더라

행19:13 이에 돌아다니며 마술하는 어떤 유대인들이 시험삼아 악귀 들린 자들에게 주 예수의 이름을 불러 말하되 내가 바울이 전파하는 예수를 의지하여 너희에게 명하노라 하더라

행19:14 유대의 한 제사장 스게와의 일곱 아들도 이 일을 행하더니

행19:15 악귀가 대답하여 이르되 내가 예수도 알고 바울도 알거니와 너희는 누구냐 하며

행19:16 악귀 들린 사람이 그들에게 뛰어올라 눌러 이기니 그들이 상하여 벗은 몸으로 그 집에서 도망하는지라

행19:17 에베소에 사는 유대인과 헬라인들이 다 이 일을 알고 두려워하며 주 예수의 이름을 높이고

행19:18 믿은 사람들이 많이 와서 자복하여 행한 일을 알리며

행19:19 또 마술을 행하던 많은 사람이 그 책을 모아 가지고 와서 모든 사람 앞에서 불사르니 그 책 값을 계산한 즉 은 오만이나 되더라

행19:20 이와 같이 주의 말씀이 힘이 있어 흥왕하여 세력을 얻으니라

행19:21 이 일이 있은 후에 바울이 마게도냐와 아가야를 거쳐 예루살렘에 가기로 작정하여 이르되 내가 거기 갔다가 후에 로마도 보아야 하리라 하고

행19:22 자기를 돕는 사람 중에서 디모데와 에라스도 두 사람을 마게도냐로 보내고 자기는 아시아에 얼마 동안 더 있으니라

행19:23 그 때쯤 되어 이 도로 말미암아 적지 않은 소동이 있었으니

행19:24 즉 데메드리오라 하는 어떤 은장색이 아데미의 신상 모형을 만들어 직공들에게 적지 않은 벌이를 하게 하더니

행19:25 그가 그 직공들과 그러한 영업하는 자들을 모아 이르되 여러분도 알거니와 우리의 풍족한 생활이 이 생업에 있는데

행19:26 이 바울이 에베소뿐 아니라 거의 전 아시아를 통하여 수많은 사람을 권유하여 말하되 사람의 손으로 만든 것들은 신이 아니라 하니 이는 그대들도 보고 들은 것이라

행19:27 우리의 이 영업이 천하여질 위험이 있을 뿐 아니라 큰 여신 아데미의 신전도 무시 당하게 되고 온 아시아와 천하가 위하는 그의 위엄도 떨어질까 하노라 하더라

행19:28 그들이 이 말을 듣고 분이 가득하여 외쳐 이르되 크다 에베소 사람의 아데미여 하니

행19:29 온 시내가 요란하여 바울과 같이 다니는 마게도냐 사람 가이오와 아리스다고를 붙들어 일제히 연극장으로 달려 들어가는지라

행19:30 바울이 백성 가운데로 들어가고자 하나 제자들이 말리고

행19:31 또 아시아 관리 중에 바울의 친구된 어떤 이들이 그에게 통지하여 연극장에 들어가지 말라 권하더라

행19:32 사람들이 외쳐 어떤 이는 이런 말을, 어떤 이는 저런 말을 하니 모인 무리가 분란하여 태반이나 어찌하여 모였는지 알지 못하더라

행19:33 유대인들이 무리 가운데서 알렉산더를 권하여 앞으로 밀어내니 알렉산더가 손짓하며 백성에게 변명하려 하나

행19:34 그들은 그가 유대인인 줄 알고 다 한 소리로 외쳐 이르되 크다 에베소 사람의 아데미여 하기를 두 시간이나 하더니

행19:35 서기장이 무리를 진정시키고 이르되 에베소 사람들아 에베소 시가 큰 아데미와 제우스에게서 내려온 우상의 신전지기가 된 줄을 누가 알지 못하겠느냐

행19:36 이 일이 그렇지 않다 할 수 없으니 너희가 가만히 있어서 무엇이든지 경솔히 아니하여야 하리라

행19:37 신전의 물건을 도둑질하지도 아니하였고 우리 여신을 비방하지도 아니한 이 사람들을 너희가 붙잡아 왔으니

행19:38 만일 데메드리오와 그와 함께 있는 직공들이 누구에게 고발할 것이 있으면 재판 날도 있고 총독들도 있으니 피차 고소할 것이요

행19:39 만일 그 외에 무엇을 원하면 정식으로 민회에서 결정할지라

행19:40 오늘 아무 까닭도 없는 이 일에 우리가 소요 사건으로 책망 받을 위험이 있고 우리는 이 불법 집회에 관하여 보고할 자료가 없다 하고

행19:41 이에 그 모임을 흩어지게 하니라

Genesis 20.

20:1 Now Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between Kadesh and Shur. For a while he stayed in Gerar,

20:2 and there Abraham said of his wife Sarah, "She is my sister." Then Abimelech king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her.

20:3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream one night and said to him, "You are as good as dead because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman."

20:4 Now Abimelech had not gone near her, so he said, "Lord, will you destroy an innocent nation?

20:5 Did he not say to me, 'She is my sister,' and didn't she also say, 'He is my brother'? I have done this with a clear conscience and clean hands."

20:6 Then God said to him in the dream, "Yes, I know you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her.

20:7 Now return the man's wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all yours will die."

20:8 Early the next morning Abimelech summoned all his officials, and when he told them all that had happened, they were very much afraid.

20:9 Then Abimelech called Abraham in and said, "What have you done to us? How have I wronged you that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should not be done."

20:10 And Abimelech asked Abraham, "What was your reason for doing this?"

20:11 Abraham replied, "I said to myself, 'There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.'

20:12 Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife.

20:13 And when God had me wander from my father's household, I said to her, 'This is how you can show your love to me: Everywhere we go, say of me, "He is my brother."'"

20:14 Then Abimelech brought sheep and cattle and male and female slaves and gave them to Abraham, and he returned Sarah his wife to him.

20:15 And Abimelech said, "My land is before you; live wherever you like."

20:16 To Sarah he said, "I am giving your brother a thousand shekels of silver. This is to cover the offense against you before all who are with you; you are completely vindicated."

20:17 Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife and his slave girls so they could have children again,

20:18 for the LORD had closed up every womb in Abimelech's household because of Abraham's wife Sarah.

Matthew 19.

19:1 When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan.

19:2 Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.

19:3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?"

19:4 "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,'

19:5 and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'?

19:6 So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

19:7 "Why then," they asked, "did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?"

19:8 Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning.

19:9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery."

19:10 The disciples said to him, "If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry."

19:11 Jesus replied, "Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given.

19:12 For some are eunuchs because they were born that way; others were made that way by men; and others have renounced marriage because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it."

19:13 Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them.

19:14 Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

19:15 When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.

19:16 Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?"

19:17 "Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments."

19:18 "Which ones?" the man inquired. Jesus replied, "'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony,

19:19 honor your father and mother,' and 'love your neighbor as yourself.'"

19:20 "All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?"

19:21 Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

19:22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

19:23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

19:24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

19:25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, "Who then can be saved?"

19:26 Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

19:27 Peter answered him, "We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?"

19:28 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

19:29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.

19:30 But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.

Nehemiah 9.

9:1 On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and having dust on their heads.

9:2 Those of Israelite descent had separated themselves from all foreigners. They stood in their places and confessed their sins and the wickedness of their fathers.

9:3 They stood where they were and read from the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the LORD their God.

9:4 Standing on the stairs were the Levites--Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani and Kenani--who called with loud voices to the LORD their God.

9:5 And the Levites--Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah and Pethahiah--said: "Stand up and praise the LORD your God, who is from everlasting to everlasting." "Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise.

9:6 You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.

9:7 "You are the LORD God, who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans and named him Abraham.

9:8 You found his heart faithful to you, and you made a covenant with him to give to his descendants the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Jebusites and Girgashites. You have kept your promise because you are righteous.

9:9 "You saw the suffering of our forefathers in Egypt; you heard their cry at the Red Sea.

9:10 You sent miraculous signs and wonders against Pharaoh, against all his officials and all the people of his land, for you knew how arrogantly the Egyptians treated them. You made a name for yourself, which remains to this day.

9:11 You divided the sea before them, so that they passed through it on dry ground, but you hurled their pursuers into the depths, like a stone into mighty waters.

9:12 By day you led them with a pillar of cloud, and by night with a pillar of fire to give them light on the way they were to take.

9:13 "You came down on Mount Sinai; you spoke to them from heaven. You gave them regulations and laws that are just and right, and decrees and commands that are good.

9:14 You made known to them your holy Sabbath and gave them commands, decrees and laws through your servant Moses.

9:15 In their hunger you gave them bread from heaven and in their thirst you brought them water from the rock; you told them to go in and take possession of the land you had sworn with uplifted hand to give them.

9:16 "But they, our forefathers, became arrogant and stiff-necked, and did not obey your commands.

9:17 They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them,

9:18 even when they cast for themselves an image of a calf and said, 'This is your god, who brought you up out of Egypt,' or when they committed awful blasphemies.

9:19 "Because of your great compassion you did not abandon them in the desert. By day the pillar of cloud did not cease to guide them on their path, nor the pillar of fire by night to shine on the way they were to take.

9:20 You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst.

9:21 For forty years you sustained them in the desert; they lacked nothing, their clothes did not wear out nor did their feet become swollen.

9:22 "You gave them kingdoms and nations, allotting to them even the remotest frontiers. They took over the country of Sihon king of Heshbon and the country of Og king of Bashan.

9:23 You made their sons as numerous as the stars in the sky, and you brought them into the land that you told their fathers to enter and possess.

9:24 Their sons went in and took possession of the land. You subdued before them the Canaanites, who lived in the land; you handed the Canaanites over to them, along with their kings and the peoples of the land, to deal with them as they pleased.

9:25 They captured fortified cities and fertile land; they took possession of houses filled with all kinds of good things, wells already dug, vineyards, olive groves and fruit trees in abundance. They ate to the full and were well-nourished; they reveled in your great goodness.

9:26 "But they were disobedient and rebelled against you; they put your law behind their backs. They killed your prophets, who had admonished them in order to turn them back to you; they committed awful blasphemies.

9:27 So you handed them over to their enemies, who oppressed them. But when they were oppressed they cried out to you. From heaven you heard them, and in your great compassion you gave them deliverers, who rescued them from the hand of their enemies.

9:28 "But as soon as they were at rest, they again did what was evil in your sight. Then you abandoned them to the hand of their enemies so that they ruled over them. And when they cried out to you again, you heard from heaven, and in your compassion you delivered them time after time.

9:29 "You warned them to return to your law, but they became arrogant and disobeyed your commands. They sinned against your ordinances, by which a man will live if he obeys them. Stubbornly they turned their backs on you, became stiff-necked and refused to listen.

9:30 For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you admonished them through your prophets. Yet they paid no attention, so you handed them over to the neighboring peoples.

9:31 But in your great mercy you did not put an end to them or abandon them, for you are a gracious and merciful God.

9:32 "Now therefore, O our God, the great, mighty and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love, do not let all this hardship seem trifling in your eyes--the hardship that has come upon us, upon our kings and leaders, upon our priests and prophets, upon our fathers and all your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today.

9:33 In all that has happened to us, you have been just; you have acted faithfully, while we did wrong.

9:34 Our kings, our leaders, our priests and our fathers did not follow your law; they did not pay attention to your commands or the warnings you gave them.

9:35 Even while they were in their kingdom, enjoying your great goodness to them in the spacious and fertile land you gave them, they did not serve you or turn from their evil ways.

9:36 "But see, we are slaves today, slaves in the land you gave our forefathers so they could eat its fruit and the other good things it produces.

9:37 Because of our sins, its abundant harvest goes to the kings you have placed over us. They rule over our bodies and our cattle as they please. We are in great distress.

9:38 "In view of all this, we are making a binding agreement, putting it in writing, and our leaders, our Levites and our priests are affixing their seals to it."

Acts (of the Apostles) 19.

19:1 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples

19:2 and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."

19:3 So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?" "John's baptism," they replied.

19:4 Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus."

19:5 On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

19:6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

19:7 There were about twelve men in all.

19:8 Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God.

19:9 But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.

19:10 This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.

19:11 God did extraordinary miracles through Paul,

19:12 so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them.

19:13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, "In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out."

19:14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this.

19:15 One day the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?"

19:16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.

19:17 When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor.

19:18 Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed their evil deeds.

19:19 A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.

19:20 In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power.

19:21 After all this had happened, Paul decided to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. "After I have been there," he said, "I must visit Rome also."

19:22 He sent two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, to Macedonia, while he stayed in the province of Asia a little longer.

19:23 About that time there arose a great disturbance about the Way.

19:24 A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in no little business for the craftsmen.

19:25 He called them together, along with the workmen in related trades, and said: "Men, you know we receive a good income from this business.

19:26 And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that man-made gods are no gods at all.

19:27 There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited, and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty."

19:28 When they heard this, they were furious and began shouting: "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"

19:29 Soon the whole city was in an uproar. The people seized Gaius Aristarchus, Paul's traveling companions from Macedonia, and rushed as one man into the theater.

19:30 Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him.

19:31 Even some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, sent him a message begging him not to venture into the theater.

19:32 The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there.

19:33 The Jews pushed Alexander to the front, and some of the crowd shouted instructions to him. He motioned for silence in order to make a defense before the people.

19:34 But when they realized he was a Jew, they all shouted in unison for about two hours: "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"

19:35 The city clerk quieted the crowd and said: "Men of Ephesus, doesn't all the world know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis and of her image, which fell from heaven?

19:36 Therefore, since these facts are undeniable, you ought to be quiet and not do anything rash.

19:37 You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples nor blasphemed our goddess.

19:38 If, then, Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a grievance against anybody, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. They can press charges.

19:39 If there is anything further you want to bring up, it must be settled in a legal assembly.

19:40 As it is, we are in danger of being charged with rioting because of today's events. In that case we would not be able to account for this commotion, since there is no reason for it."

19:41 After he had said this, he dismissed the assembly.
