창세기 18 장.

창18:1 여호와께서 마므레의 상수리나무들이 있는 곳에서 아브라함에게 나타나시니라 날이 뜨거울 때에 그가 장막 문에 앉아 있다가

창18:2 눈을 들어본즉 사람 셋이 맞은편에 서 있는지라 그가 그들을 보자 곧 장막 문에서 달려나가 영접하며 몸을 땅에 굽혀

창18:3 이르되 내 주여 내가 주께 은혜를 입었사오면 원하건대 종을 떠나 지나가지 마시옵고

창18:4 물을 조금 가져오게 하사 당신들의 발을 씻으시고 나무 아래에서 쉬소서

창18:5 내가 떡을 조금 가져오리니 당신들의 마음을 상쾌하게 하신 후에 지나가소서 당신들이 종에게 오셨음이니이다 그들이 이르되 네 말대로 그리하라

창18:6 아브라함이 급히 장막으로 가서 사라에게 이르되 속히 고운 가루 세 스아를 가져다가 반죽하여 떡을 만들라 하고

창18:7 아브라함이 또 가축 떼 있는 곳으로 달려가서 기름지고 좋은 송아지를 잡아 하인에게 주니 그가 급히 요리한지라

창18:8 아브라함이 엉긴 젖과 우유와 하인이 요리한 송아지를 가져다가 그들 앞에 차려 놓고 나무 아래에 모셔 서매 그들이 먹으니라

창18:9 그들이 아브라함에게 이르되 네 아내 사라가 어디 있느냐 대답하되 장막에 있나이다

창18:10 그가 이르시되 내년 이맘때 내가 반드시 네게로 돌아오리니 네 아내 사라에게 아들이 있으리라 하시니 사라가 그 뒤 장막 문에서 들었더라

창18:11 아브라함과 사라는 나이가 많아 늙었고 사라에게는 여성의 생리가 끊어졌는지라

창18:12 사라가 속으로 웃고 이르되 내가 노쇠하였고 내 주인도 늙었으니 내게 무슨 즐거움이 있으리요

창18:13 여호와께서 아브라함에게 이르시되 사라가 왜 웃으며 이르기를 내가 늙었거늘 어떻게 아들을 낳으리요 하느냐

창18:14 여호와께 능하지 못한 일이 있겠느냐 기한이 이를 때에 내가 네게로 돌아오리니 사라에게 아들이 있으리라

창18:15 사라가 두려워서 부인하여 이르되 내가 웃지 아니하였나이다 이르시되 아니라 네가 웃었느니라

창18:16 그 사람들이 거기서 일어나서 소돔으로 향하고 아브라함은 그들을 전송하러 함께 나가니라

창18:17 여호와께서 이르시되 내가 하려는 것을 아브라함에게 숨기겠느냐

창18:18 아브라함은 강대한 나라가 되고 천하 만민은 그로 말미암아 복을 받게 될 것이 아니냐

창18:19 내가 그로 그 자식과 권속에게 명하여 여호와의 도를 지켜 공의와 정의를 행하게 하려고 그를 택하였나니 이는 나 여호와가 아브라함에게 대하여 말한 일을 이루려 함이니라

창18:20 여호와께서 또 이르시되 소돔과 고모라에 대한 부르짖음이 크고 그 죄악이 심히 무거우니

창18:21 내가 이제 내려가서 그 모든 행한 것이 과연 내게 들린 부르짖음과 같은지 그렇지 않은지 내가 보고 알려 하노라

창18:22 그 사람들이 거기서 떠나 소돔으로 향하여 가고 아브라함은 여호와 앞에 그대로 섰더니

창18:23 아브라함이 가까이 나아가 이르되 주께서 의인을 악인과 함께 멸하려 하시나이까

창18:24 그 성중에 의인 오십 명이 있을 지라도 주께서 그 곳을 멸하시고 그 오십 의인을 위하여 용서하지 아니 하시리이까

창18:25 주께서 이같이 하사 의인을 악인과 함께 죽이심은 부당 하오며 의인과 악인을 같이 하심도 부당하니이다 세상을 심판하시는 이가 정의를 행하실 것이 아니니이까

창18:26 여호와께서 이르시되 내가 만일 소돔 성읍 가운데에서 의인 오십 명을 찾으면 그들을 위하여 온 지역을 용서하리라

창18:27 아브라함이 대답하여 이르되 나는 티끌이나 재와 같사오나 감히 주께 아뢰나이다

창18:28 오십 의인 중에 오 명이 부족하다면 그 오 명이 부족함으로 말미암아 온 성읍을 멸하시리이까 이르시되 내가 거기서 사십오 명을 찾으면 멸하지 아니하리라

창18:29 아브라함이 또 아뢰어 이르되 거기서 사십 명을 찾으시면 어찌 하려 하시나이까 이르시되 사십 명으로 말미암아 멸하지 아니하리라

창18:30 아브라함이 이르되 내 주여 노하지 마시옵고 말씀하게 하옵소서 거기서 삼십 명을 찾으시면 어찌 하려 하시나이까 이르시되 내가 거기서 삼십 명을 찾으면 그리하지 아니하리라

창18:31 아브라함이 또 이르되 내가 감히 내 주께 아뢰나이다 거기서 이십 명을 찾으시면 어찌 하려 하시나이까 이르시되 내가 이십 명으로 말미암아 그리하지 아니하리라

창18:32 아브라함이 또 이르되 주는 노하지 마옵소서 내가 이번만 더 아뢰리이다 거기서 십 명을 찾으시면 어찌 하려 하시나이까 이르시되 내가 십 명으로 말미암아 멸하지 아니하리라

창18:33 여호와께서 아브라함과 말씀을 마치시고 가시니 아브라함도 자기 곳으로 돌아갔더라

마태복음 17 장.

마17:1 엿새 후에 예수께서 베드로와 야고보와 그 형제 요한을 데리시고 따로 높은 산에 올라 가셨더니

마17:2 그들 앞에서 변형되사 그 얼굴이 해 같이 빛나며 옷이 빛과 같이 희어졌더라

마17:3 그 때에 모세와 엘리야가 예수와 더불어 말하는 것이 그들에게 보이거늘

마17:4 베드로가 예수께 여쭈어 이르되 주여 우리가 여기 있는 것이 좋사오니 만일 주께서 원하시면 내가 여기서 초막 셋을 짓되 하나는 주님을 위하여, 하나는 모세를 위하여, 하나는 엘리야를 위하여 하리이다

마17:5 말할 때에 홀연히 빛난 구름이 그들을 덮으며 구름 속에서 소리가 나서 이르시되 이는 내 사랑하는 아들이요 내 기뻐하는 자니 너희는 그의 말을 들으라 하시는지라

마17:6 제자들이 듣고 엎드려 심히 두려워하니

마17:7 예수께서 나아와 그들에게 손을 대시며 이르시되 일어나라 두려워 말라 하시니

마17:8 제자들이 눈을 들고 보매 오직 예수 외에는 아무도 보이지 아니하더라

마17:9 저희가 산에서 내려올 때에 예수께서 명하여 이르시되 인자가 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나기 전에는 본 것을 아무에게도 이르지 말라 하시니

마17:10 제자들이 물어 이르되 그러면 어찌하여 서기관들이 엘리야가 먼저 와야 하리라 하나이까

마17:11 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 엘리야가 과연 먼저 와서 모든 일을 회복하리라

마17:12 내가 너희에게 말하노니 엘리야가 이미 왔으되 사람들이 알지 못하고 임의로 대우하였도다 인자도 이와 같이 그들에게 고난을 받으리라 하시니

마17:13 그제서야 제자들이 예수께서 말씀하신 것이 세례 요한인 줄을 깨달으니라

마17:14 그들이 무리에게 이르매 한 사람이 예수께 와서 꿇어 엎드려 이르되

마17:15 주여 내 아들을 불쌍히 여기소서 그가 간질로 심히 고생하여 자주 불에도 넘어지며 물에도 넘어지는지라

마17:16 내가 주의 제자들에게 데리고 왔으나 능히 고치지 못하더이다

마17:17 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 믿음이 없고 패역한 세대여 내가 얼마나 너희와 함께 있으며 얼마나 너희에게 참으리요 그를 이리로 데려오라 하시니라

마17:18 이에 예수께서 꾸짖으시니 귀신이 나가고 아이가 그 때부터 나으니라

마17:19 이 때에 제자들이 조용히 예수께 나아와 이르되 우리는 어찌하여 쫓아내지 못하였나이까

마17:20 이르시되 너희 믿음이 작은 까닭이니라 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 만일 너희에게 믿음이 겨자씨 한 알 만큼만 있어도 이 산을 명하여 여기서 저기로 옮겨지라 하면 옮겨 질 것이요 또 너희가 못할 것이 없으리라

마17:21 (없 음)

마17:22 갈릴리에 모일 때에 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 인자가 장차 사람들의 손에 넘겨져

마17:23 죽임을 당하고 제삼일에 살아나리라 하시니 제자들이 매우 근심하더라

마17:24 가버나움에 이르니 반 세겔 받는 자들이 베드로에게 나아와 이르되 너의 선생은 반 세겔을 내지 아니하느냐

마17:25 이르되 내신다 하고 집에 들어가니 예수께서 먼저 이르시되 시몬아 네 생각은 어떠하냐 세상 임금들이 누구에게 관세와 국세를 받느냐 자기 아들에게냐 타인에게냐

마17:26 베드로가 이르되 타인에게니이다 예수께서 이르시되 그렇다면 아들들은 세를 면하리라

마17:27 그러나 우리가 그들이 실족하지 않게 하기 위하여 네가 바다에 가서 낚시를 던져 먼저 오르는 고기를 가져 입을 열면 돈 한 세겔을 얻을 것이니 가져다가 나와 너를 위하여 주라 하시니라

느헤미야 7 장.

느7:1 성벽이 건축되매 문짝을 달고 문지기와 노래하는 자들과 레위 사람들을 세운 후에

느7:2 내 아우 하나니와 영문의 관원 하나냐가 함께 예루살렘을 다스리게 하였는데 하나냐는 충성스러운 사람이요 하나님을 경외함이 무리 중에서 뛰어난 자라

느7:3 내가 그들에게 이르기를 해가 높이 뜨기 전에는 예루살렘 성문을 열지 말고 아직 파수할 때에 곧 문을 닫고 빗장을 지르며 또 예루살렘 주민이 각각 자기가 지키는 곳에서 파수하되 자기 집 맞은편을 지키게 하라 하였노니

느7:4 그 성읍은 광대하고 그 주민은 적으며 가옥은 미처 건축하지 못하였음이니라

느7:5 내 하나님이 내 마음을 감동하사 귀족들과 민장들과 백성을 모아 그 계보대로 등록하게 하시므로 내가 처음으로 돌아온 자의 계보를 얻었는데 거기에 기록된 것을 보면

느7:6 옛적에 바벨론 왕 느부갓네살에게 사로잡혀 갔던 자들 중에서 놓임을 받고 예루살렘과 유다에 돌아와 각기 자기들의 성읍에 이른 자들 곧

느7:7 스룹바벨과 예수아와 느헤미야와 아사랴와 라아먀와 나하마니와 모르드개와 빌산과 미스베렛과 비그왜와 느훔과 바아나와 함께 나온 이스라엘 백성의 명수가 이러하니라

느7:8 바로스 자손이 이천 백칠십이 명이요

느7:9 스바댜 자손이 삼백칠십이 명이요

느7:10 아라 자손이 육백오십이 명이요

느7:11 바핫모압 자손 곧 예수아와 요압 자손이 이천팔백십팔 명이요

느7:12 엘람 자손이 천이백오십사 명이요

느7:13 삿두 자손이 팔백사십오 명이요

느7:14 삭개 자손이 칠백육십 명이요

느7:15 빈누이 자손이 육백사십팔 명이요

느7:16 브배 자손이 육백이십팔 명이요

느7:17 아스갓 자손이 이천삼백이십이 명이요

느7:18 아도니감 자손이 육백육십칠 명이요

느7:19 비그왜 자손이 이천육십칠 명이요

느7:20 아딘 자손이 육백오십오 명이요

느7:21 아델 자손 곧 히스기야 자손이 구십팔 명이요

느7:22 하숨 자손이 삼백이십팔 명이요

느7:23 베새 자손이 삼백이십사 명이요

느7:24 하립 자손이 백십이 명이요

느7:25 기브온 사람이 구십오 명이요

느7:26 베들레헴과 느도바 사람이 백팔십팔 명이요

느7:27 아나돗 사람이 백이십팔 명이요

느7:28 벧아스마웻 사람이 사십이 명이요

느7:29 기럇여아림과 그비라와 브에롯 사람이 칠백사십삼 명이요

느7:30 라마와 게바 사람이 육백이십일 명이요

느7:31 믹마스 사람이 백이십이 명이요

느7:32 벧엘과 아이 사람이 백이십삼 명이요

느7:33 기타 느보 사람이 오십이 명이요

느7:34 기타 엘람 자손이 천이백오십사명이요

느7:35 하림 자손이 삼백이십 명이요

느7:36 여리고 자손이 삼백사십오 명이요

느7:37 로드와 하딧과 오노 자손이 칠백 이십일 명이요

느7:38 스나아 자손이 삼천 구백삼십 명이었느니라

느7:39 제사장들은 예수아의 집 여다야 자손이 구백칠십삼 명이요

느7:40 임멜 자손이 천오십이 명이요

느7:41 바스훌 자손이 천이백사십칠 명이요

느7:42 하림 자손이 천십칠 명이었느니라

느7:43 레위 사람들은 호드야 자손 곧 예수아와 갓미엘 자손이 칠십사 명이요

느7:44 노래하는 자들은 아삽 자손이 백사십팔 명이요

느7:45 문지기들은 살룸 자손과 아델 자손과 달문 자손과 악굽 자손과 하디다 자손과 소배 자손이 모두 백삼십팔 명이었느니라

느7:46 느디님 사람들은 시하 자손과 하수바 자손과 답바옷 자손과

느7:47 게로스 자손과 시아 자손과 바돈 자손과

느7:48 르바나 자손과 하가바 자손과 살매 자손과

느7:49 하난 자손과 깃델 자손과 가할 자손과

느7:50 르아야 자손과 르신 자손과 느고다 자손과

느7:51 갓삼 자손과 웃사 자손과 바세아 자손과

느7:52 베새 자손과 므우님 자손과 느비스심 자손과

느7:53 박북 자손과 하그바 자손과 할훌 자손과

느7:54 바슬릿 자손과 므히다 자손과 하르사 자손과

느7:55 바르고스 자손과 시스라 자손과 데마 자손과

느7:56 느시야 자손과 하디바 자손이었느니라

느7:57 솔로몬의 신하의 자손은 소대 자손과 소베렛 자손과 브리다 자손과

느7:58 야알라 자손과 다르곤 자손과 깃델 자손과

느7:59 스바댜 자손과 핫딜 자손과 보게렛하스바임 자손과 아몬 자손이니

느7:60 모든 느디님 사람과 솔로몬의 신하의 자손이 삼백구십이 명이었느니라

느7:61 델멜라와 델하르사와 그룹과 앗돈과 임멜로부터 올라온 자가 있으나 그들의 종족이나 계보가 이스라엘에 속하였는지는 증거할 수 없으니

느7:62 그들은 들라야 자손과 도비야 자손과 느고다 자손이라 모두가 육백사십이 명이요

느7:63 제사장 중에는 호바야 자손과 학고스 자손과 바르실래 자손이니 바르실래는 길르앗 사람 바르실래의 딸 중의 하나로 아내를 삼고 바르실래의 이름으로 불린 자라

느7:64 이 사람들은 계보 중에서 자기 이름을 찾아도 찾지 못하였으므로 그들을 부정하게 여겨 제사장의 직분을 행하지 못하게 하고

느7:65 총독이 그들에게 명령하여 우림과 둠밈을 가진 제사장이 일어나기 전에는 지성물을 먹지 말라 하였느니라

느7:66 온 회중의 합계는 사만 이천삼백육십 명이요

느7:67 그 외에 노비가 칠천삼백심십칠 명이요 그들에게 노래하는 남녀가 이백사십오 명이 있었고

느7:68 말이 칠백삼십육 마리요 노새가 이백사십오 마리요

느7:69 낙타가 사백삼십오 마리요 나귀가 육천칠백이십 마리였느니라

느7:70 어떤 족장들은 역사를 위하여 보조하였고 총독은 금 천 드라크마와 대접 오십과 제사장의 의복 오백삼십 벌을 보물 곳간에 드렸고

느7:71 또 어떤 족장들은 금 이만 드라크마와 은 이천이백 마네를 역사 곳간에 드렸고

느7:72 그 나머지 백성은 금 이만 드라크마와 은 이천 마네와 제사장의 의복 육십칠 벌을 드렸느니라

느7:73 이와 같이 제사장들과 레위 사람들과 문지기들과 노래하는 자들과 백성 몇 명과 느디님 사람들과 온 이스라엘 자손이 다 자기들의 성읍에 거주하였느니라

사도행전 17 장.

행17:1 그들이 암비볼리와 아볼로니아로 다녀가 데살로니가에 이르니 거기 유대인의 회당이 있는지라

행17:2 바울이 자기의 관례대로 그들에게로 들어가서 세 안식일에 성경을 가지고 강론하며

행17:3 뜻을 풀어 그리스도가 해를 받고 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살아나야 할 것을 증언하고 이르되 내가 너희에게 전하는 이 예수가 곧 그리스도라 하니

행17:4 그 중의 어떤 사람 곧 경건한 헬라인의 큰 무리와 적지 않은 귀부인도 권함을 받고 바울과 실라를 따르나

행17:5 그러나 유대인들은 시기하여 저자의 어떤 불량한 사람들을 데리고 떼를 지어 성을 소동하게 하여 야손의 집에 침입하여 그들을 백성에게 끌어내려고 찾았으나

행17:6 발견하지 못하매 야손과 몇 형제들을 끌고 읍장들 앞에 가서 소리 질러 이르되 천하를 어지럽게 하던 이 사람들이 여기도 이르매

행17:7 야손이 그들을 맞아 들였도다 이 사람들이 다 가이사의 명을 거역하여 말하되 다른 임금 곧 예수라 하는 이가 있다 하더이다 하니

행17:8 무리와 읍장들이 이 말을 듣고 소동하여

행17:9 야손과 그 나머지 사람들에게 보석금을 받고 놓아 주니라

행17:10 밤에 형제들이 곧 바울과 실라를 베뢰아로 보내니 그들이 이르러 유대인의 회당에 들어가니라

행17:11 베뢰아에 있는 사람들은 데사로니가에 있는 사람들보다 더 너그러워서 간절한 마음으로 말씀을 받고 이것이 그러한가 하여 날마다 성경을 상고하므로

행17:12 그 중에 믿는 사람이 많고 또 헬라의 귀부인과 남자가 적지 아니하나

행17:13 데살로니가에 있는 유대인들은 바울이 하나님의 말씀을 베뢰아에서도 전하는 줄을 알고 거기도 가서 무리를 움직여 소동하게 하거늘

행17:14 형제들이 곧 바울을 내보내어 바다까지 가게 하되 실라와 디모데는 아직 거기 머물더라

행17:15 바울을 인도하는 사람들이 그를 데리고 아덴까지 이르러 그에게서 실라와 디모데를 자기에게로 속히 오게 하라는 명령을 받고 떠나니라

행17:16 바울이 아덴에서 그들을 기다리다가 그 성에 우상이 가득한 것을 보고 마음에 격분하여

행17:17 회당에서는 유대인과 경건한 사람들과 또 장터에서는 날마다 만나는 사람들과 변론하니

행17:18 어떤 에피쿠로스와 스토아 철학자들도 바울과 쟁론할새 어떤 사람은 이르되 이 말쟁이가 무슨 말을 하고자 하느냐 하고 어떤 사람은 이르되 이방 신들을 전하는 사람인가보다 하니 이는 바울이 예수와 부활을 전하기 때문이러라

행17:19 그를 붙들어 아레오바고로 가며 말하기를 네가 말하는 이 새로운 가르침이 무엇인지 우리가 알 수 있겠느냐

행17:20 네가 어떤 이상한 것을 우리 귀에 들려 주니 그 무슨 뜻인지 알고자 하노라 하니

행17:21 모든 아덴 사람과 거기서 나그네 된 외국인들이 가장 새로운 것을 말하고 듣는 것 외에는 달리 시간을 쓰지 않음이더라

행17:22 바울이 아레오바고 가운데 서서 말하되 아덴 사람들아 너희를 보니 범사에 종교심이 많도다

행17:23 내가 두루 다니며 너희가 위하는 것들을 보다가 알지 못하는 신에게라고 새긴 단도 보았으니 그런즉 너희가 알지도 못하고 위하는 그것을 내가 너희에게 알게 하리라

행17:24 우주와 그 가운데 있는 만물을 지으신 하나님께서는 천지의 주재시니 손으로 지은 전에 계시지 아니하시고

행17:25 또 무엇이 부족한 것처럼 사람의 손으로 섬김을 받으시는 것이 아니니 이는 만민에게 생명과 호흡과 만물을 친히 주시는 이심이라

행17:26 인류의 모든 족속을 한 혈통으로 만드사 온 땅에 살게 하시고 그들의 연대를 정하시며 거주의 경계를 한정하셨으니

행17:27 이는 사람으로 혹 하나님을 더듬어 찾아 발견하게 하려 하심이로되 그는 우리 각 사람에게서 멀리 계시지 아니하도다

행17:28 우리가 그를 힘입어 살며 기동하며 존재하느니라 너희 시인 중 어떤 사람들의 말과 같이 우리가 그의 소생이라 하니

행17:29 이와 같이 하나님의 소생이 되었은즉 하나님을 금이나 은이나 돌에다 사람의 기술과 고안으로 새긴 것들과 같이 여길 것이 아니라

행17:30 알지 못하던 시대에는 하나님이 간과하셨거니와 이제는 어디든지 사람에게 다 명하사 회개하라 하셨으니

행17:31 이는 정하신 사람으로 하여금 천하를 공의로 심판할 날을 작정하시고 이에 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살리신 것으로 모든 사람에게 믿을 만한 증거를 주셨음이니라 하니라

행17:32 그들이 죽은 자의 부활을 듣고 어떤 사람은 조롱도 하고 어떤 사람은 이 일에 대하여 내 말을 다시 듣겠다 하니

행17:33 이에 바울이 그들 가운데서 떠나매

행17:34 몇 사람이 그를 가까이하여 믿으니 그 중에는 아레오바고 관리 디오누시오와 다마리라 하는 여자와 또 다른 사람들도 있었더라

Genesis 18.

18:1 The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day.

18:2 Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.

18:3 He said, "If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by.

18:4 Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree.

18:5 Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way--now that you have come to your servant." "Very well," they answered, "do as you say."

18:6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. "Quick," he said, "get three seahs of fine flour and knead it and bake some bread."

18:7 Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it.

18:8 He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.

18:9 "Where is your wife Sarah?" they asked him. "There, in the tent," he said.

18:10 Then the LORD said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son." Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him.

18:11 Abraham and Sarah were already old and well advanced in years, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.

18:12 So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, "After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?"

18:13 Then the LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Will I really have a child, now that I am old?'

18:14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son."

18:15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, "I did not laugh." But he said, "Yes, you did laugh."

18:16 When the men got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way.

18:17 Then the LORD said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?

18:18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.

18:19 For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him."

18:20 Then the LORD said, "The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous

18:21 that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know."

18:22 The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the LORD.

18:23 Then Abraham approached him and said: "Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?

18:24 What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?

18:25 Far be it from you to do such a thing--to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?"

18:26 The LORD said, "If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake."

18:27 Then Abraham spoke up again: "Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes,

18:28 what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city because of five people?" "If I find forty-five there," he said, "I will not destroy it."

18:29 Once again he spoke to him, "What if only forty are found there?" He said, "For the sake of forty, I will not do it."

18:30 Then he said, "May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?" He answered, "I will not do it if I find thirty there."

18:31 Abraham said, "Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?" He said, "For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it."

18:32 Then he said, "May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?" He answered, "For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it."

18:33 When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.

Matthew 17.

17:1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.

17:2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.

17:3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.

17:4 Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah."

17:5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"

17:6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified.

17:7 But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid."

17:8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

17:9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, "Don't tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."

17:10 The disciples asked him, "Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?"

17:11 Jesus replied, "To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.

17:12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands."

17:13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.

17:14 When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him.

17:15 "Lord, have mercy on my son," he said. "He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.

17:16 I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him."

17:17 "O unbelieving and perverse generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me."

17:18 Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.

17:19 Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"

17:20 He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

17:21

17:22 When they came together in Galilee, he said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.

17:23 They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life." And the disciples were filled with grief.

17:24 After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, "Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?"

17:25 "Yes, he does," he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. "What do you think, Simon?" he asked. "From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes--from their own sons or from others?"

17:26 "From others," Peter answered. "Then the sons are exempt," Jesus said to him.

17:27 "But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours."

Nehemiah 7.

7:1 After the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed.

7:2 I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah the commander of the citadel, because he was a man of integrity and feared God more than most men do.

7:3 I said to them, "The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot. While the gatekeepers are still on duty, have them shut the doors and bar them. Also appoint residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some near their own houses."

7:4 Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt.

7:5 So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had been the first to return. This is what I found written there:

7:6 These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken captive (they returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town,

7:66 The whole company numbered 42,360,

7:67 besides their 7,337 menservants and maidservants; and they also had 245 men and women singers.

7:68 There were 736 horses, 245 mules,

7:69 435 camels and 6,720 donkeys.

7:70 Some of the heads of the families contributed to the work. The governor gave to the treasury 1,000 drachmas of gold, 50 bowls and 530 garments for priests.

7:71 Some of the heads of the families gave to the treasury for the work 20,000 drachmas of gold and 2,200 minas of silver.

7:72 The total given by the rest of the people was 20,000 drachmas of gold, 2,000 minas of silver and 67 garments for priests.

7:73 The priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers and the temple servants, along with certain of the people and the rest of the Israelites, settled in their own towns. When the seventh month came and the Israelites had settled in their towns,

Acts (of the Apostles) 17.

17:1 When they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.

17:2 As his custom was, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

17:3 explaining and proving that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. "This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ," he said.

17:4 Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and not a few prominent women.

17:5 But the Jews were jealous; so they rounded up some bad characters from the marketplace, formed a mob and started a riot in the city. They rushed to Jason's house in search of Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the crowd.

17:6 But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some other brothers before the city officials, shouting: "These men who have caused trouble all over the world have now come here,

17:7 and Jason has welcomed them into his house. They are all defying Caesar's decrees, saying that there is another king, one called Jesus."

17:8 When they heard this, the crowd and the city officials were thrown into turmoil.

17:9 Then they made Jason and the others post bond and let them go.

17:10 As soon as it was night, the brothers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue.

17:11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

17:12 Many of the Jews believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men.

17:13 When the Jews in Thessalonica learned that Paul was preaching the word of God at Berea, they went there too, agitating the crowds and stirring them up.

17:14 The brothers immediately sent Paul to the coast, but Silas and Timothy stayed at Berea.

17:15 The men who escorted Paul brought him to Athens and then left with instructions for Silas and Timothy to join him as soon as possible.

17:16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols.

17:17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there.

17:18 A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to dispute with him. Some of them asked, "What is this babbler trying to say?" Others remarked, "He seems to be advocating foreign gods." They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.

17:19 Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, "May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting?

17:20 You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we want to know what they mean."

17:21 (All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.)

17:22 Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: "Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious.

17:23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you.

17:24 "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands.

17:25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else.

17:26 From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live.

17:27 God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.

17:28 'For in him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.'

17:29 "Therefore since we are God's offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone--an image made by man's design and skill.

17:30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.

17:31 For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead."

17:32 When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, "We want to hear you again on this subject."

17:33 At that, Paul left the Council.

17:34 A few men became followers of Paul and believed. Among them was Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus, also a woman named Damaris, and a number of others.
