창세기 5 장.

창5:1 이것은 아담의 계보를 적은 책이니라 하나님이 사람을 창조하실 때에 하나님의 모양대로 지으시되

창5:2 남자와 여자를 창조하셨고 그들이 창조되던 날에 하나님이 그들에게 복을 주시고 그들의 이름을 사람이라 일컬으셨더라

창5:3 아담은 백삼십 세에 자기의 모양 곧 자기의 형상과 같은 아들을 낳아 이름을 셋이라 하였고

창5:4 아담은 셋을 낳은 후 팔백 년을 지내며 자녀들을 낳았으며

창5:5 그는 구백삼십 세를 살고 죽었더라

창5:6 셋은 백오 세에 에노스를 낳았고

창5:7 에노스를 낳은 후 팔백칠 년을 지내며 자녀들을 낳았으며

창5:8 그는 구백십이 세를 살고 죽었더라

창5:9 에노스는 구십 세에 게난을 낳았고

창5:10 게난을 낳은 후 팔백십오 년을 지내며 자녀들을 낳았으며

창5:11 그는 구백오 세를 살고 죽었더라

창5:12 게난은 칠십 세에 마할랄렐을 낳았고

창5:13 마할랄렐을 낳은 후 팔백사십 년을 지내며 자녀들을 낳았으며

창5:14 그는 구백십 세를 살고 죽었더라

창5:15 마할랄렐은 육십오 세에 야렛을 낳았고

창5:16 야렛을 낳은 후 팔백삼십 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며

창5:17 그는 팔백구십오 세를 살고 죽었더라

창5:18 야렛은 백육십이 세에 에녹을 낳았고

창5:19 에녹을 낳은 후 팔백 년을 지내며 자녀들을 낳았으며

창5:20 그는 구백육십이 세를 살고 죽었더라

창5:21 에녹은 육십오 세에 므두셀라를 낳았고

창5:22 므두셀라를 낳은 후 삼백 년을 하나님과 동행하며 자녀들을 낳았으며

창5:23 그는 삼백육십오 세를 살았더라

창5:24 에녹이 하나님과 동행하더니 하나님이 그를 데려가시므로 세상에 있지 아니하였더라

창5:25 므두셀라는 백팔십칠 세에 라멕을 낳았고

창5:26 라멕을 낳은 후 칠백팔십이 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며

창5:27 그는 구백육십구 세를 살고 죽었더라

창5:28 라멕은 백팔십이 세에 아들을 낳고

창5:29 이름을 노아라하여 이르되 여호와께서 땅을 저주하시므로 수고롭게 일하는 우리를 이 아들이 안위하리라 하였더라

창5:30 라멕은 노아를 낳은 후 오백구십오 년을 지내며 자녀들을 낳았으며

창5:31 그는 칠백칠십칠 세를 살고 죽었더라

창5:32 노아는 오백 세 된 후에 셈과 함과 야벳을 낳았더라

마태복음 5 장.

마5:1 예수께서 무리를 보시고 산에 올라가 앉으시니 제자들이 나아온지라

마5:2 입을 열어 가르쳐 이르시되

마5:3 심령이 가난한 자는 복이 있나니 천국이 그들의 것임이요

마5:4 애통하는 자는 복이 있나니 그들이 위로를 받을 것임이요

마5:5 온유한 자는 복이 있나니 그들이 땅을 기업으로 받을 것임이요

마5:6 의에 주리고 목마른 자는 복이 있나니 그들이 배부를 것임이요

마5:7 긍휼히 여기는 자는 복이 있나니 그들이 긍휼히 여김을 받을 것임이요

마5:8 마음이 청결한 자는 복이 있나니 그들이 하나님을 볼 것임이요

마5:9 화평케 하는 자는 복이 있나니 그들이 하나님의 아들이라 일컬음을 받을 것임이요

마5:10 의를 위하여 핍박을 받은 자는 복이 있나니 천국이 그들의 것임이라

마5:11 나로 말미암아 너희를 욕하고 박해하고 거짓으로 너희를 거슬러 모든 악한 말을 할 때에는 너희에게 복이 있나니

마5:12 기뻐하고 즐거워하라 하늘에서 너희의 상이 큼이라 너희 전에 있던 선지자들도 이같이 박해하였느니라

마5:13 너희는 세상의 소금이니 소금이 만일 그 맛을 잃으면 무엇으로 짜게 하리요 후에는 아무 쓸 데 없어 다만 밖에 버려져 사람에게 밟힐 뿐이니라

마5:14 너희는 세상의 빛이라 산 위에 있는 동네가 숨겨지지 못할 것이요

마5:15 사람이 등불을 켜서 말 아래에 두지 아니하고 등경 위에 두나니 이러므로 집 안 모든 사람에게 비치느니라

마5:16 이같이 너희 빛이 사람 앞에 비치게 하여 그들로 너희 착한 행실을 보고 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하라

마5:17 내가 율법이나 선지자를 폐하러 온 줄로 생각하지 말라 폐하러 온 것이 아니요 완전하게 하려 함이라

마5:18 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 천지가 없어지기 전에는 율법의 일점 일획도 결코 없어지지 아니하고 다 이루리라

마5:19 그러므로 누구든지 이 계명 중의 지극히 작은 것 하나라도 버리고 또 그같이 사람을 가르치는 자는 천국에서 지극히 작다 일컬음을 받을 것이요 누구든지 이를 행하며 가르치는 자는 천국에서 크다 일컬음을 받으리라

마5:20 내가 너희에게 이르노니 너희 의가 서기관과 바리새인보다 더 낫지 못하면 결단코 천국에 들어가지 못하리라

마5:21 옛 사람에게 말한 바 살인치 말라 누구든지 살인하면 심판을 받게 되리라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나

마5:22 나는 너희에게 이르노니 형제에게 노하는 자마다 심판을 받게 되고 형제를 대하여 라가라 하는 자는 공회에 잡혀가게 되고 미련한 놈이라 하는 자는 지옥 불에 들어가게 되리라

마5:23 그러므로 예물을 제단에 드리려다가 거기서 네 형제에게 원망들을 만한 일이 있는 것이 생각나거든

마5:24 예물을 제단 앞에 두고 먼저 가서 형제와 화목하고 그 후에 와서 예물을 드리라

마5:25 너를 고발하는 자와 함께 길에 있을 때에 급히 사화하라 그 고발하는 자가 너를 재판관에게 내어주고 재판관이 옥리에게 내어주어 옥에 가둘까 염려하라

마5:26 진실로 네게 이르노니 네가 한 푼이라도 남김이 없이 다 갚기 전에는 결단코 거기서 나오지 못하리라

마5:27 또 간음하지 말라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나

마5:28 나는 너희에게 이르노니 음욕을 품고 여자를 보는 자마다 마음에 이미 간음하였느니라

마5:29 만일 네 오른 눈이 너로 실족하게 하거든 빼어 내버리라 네 백체 중 하나가 없어지고 온 몸이 지옥에 던져지지 않는 것이 유익하며

마5:30 또한 만일 네 오른손이 너로 실족하게 하거든 찍어 내버리라 네 백체 중 하나가 없어지고 온 몸이 지옥에 던져지지 않는 것이 유익하니라

마5:31 또 일렀으되 누구든지 아내를 버리려거든 이혼 증서를 줄 것이라 하였으나

마5:32 나는 너희에게 이르노니 누구든지 음행한 이유 없이 아내를 버리면 이는 그로 간음하게 함이요 또 누구든지 버림받은 여자에게 장가드는 자도 간음함이니라

마5:33 또 옛 사람에게 말한 바 헛 맹세를 하지 말고 네 맹세한 것을 주께 지키라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나

마5:34 나는 너희에게 이르노니 도무지 맹세하지 말지니 하늘로도 하지 말라 이는 하나님의 보좌임이요

마5:35 땅으로도 하지 말라 이는 하나님의 발등상임이요 예루살렘으로도 하지 말라 이는 큰 임금의 성임이요

마5:36 네 머리로도 말라 이는 네가 한 터럭도 희고 검게 할 수 없음이라

마5:37 오직 너희 말은 옳다 옳다, 아니라 아니라 하라 이에서 지나는 것은 악으로부터 나느니라

마5:38 또 눈은 눈으로, 이는 이로 갚으라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나

마5:39 나는 너희에게 이르노니 악한 자를 대적하지 말라 누구든지 네 오른편 뺨을 치거든 왼편도 돌려 대며

마5:40 또 너를 고발하여 속옷을 가지고자 하는 자에게 겉옷까지도 가지게 하며

마5:41 또 누구든지 너로 억지로 오 리를 가게 하거든 그 사람과 십 리를 동행하고

마5:42 네게 구하는 자에게 주며 네게 꾸고자 하는 자에게 거절하지 말라

마5:43 또 네 이웃을 사랑하고 네 원수를 미워하라 하였다는 것을 너희가 들었으나

마5:44 나는 너희에게 이르노니 너희 원수를 사랑하며 너희를 핍박하는 자를 위하여 기도하라

마5:45 이같이 한즉 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지의 아들이 되리니 이는 하나님이 그 해를 악인과 선인에게 비추시며 비를 의로운 자와 불의한 자에게 내려주심이라

마5:46 너희가 너희를 사랑하는 자를 사랑하면 무슨 상이 있으리요 세리도 이같이 아니하느냐

마5:47 또 너희가 너희 형제에게만 문안하면 남보다 더하는 것이 무엇이냐 이방인들도 이같이 아니하느냐

마5:48 그러므로 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지의 온전하심과 같이 너희도 온전하라

에스라 5 장.

스5:1 선지자들 곧 선지자 학개와 잇도의 손자 스가랴가 이스라엘의 하나님의 이름으로 유다와 예루살렘에 거주하는 유다 사람들에게 예언하였더니

스5:2 이에 스알디엘의 아들 스룹바벨과 요사닥의 아들 예수아가 일어나 예루살렘에 있던 하나님의 성전을 다시 건축하기 시작하매 하나님의 선지자들이 함께 있어 그들을 돕더니

스5:3 그 때에 유브라데 강 건너편 총독 닷드내와 스달보스내와 그들의 동관들이 다 나아와 그들에게 이르되 누가 너희에게 명령하여 이 성전을 건축하고 이 성곽을 마치게 하였느냐 하기로

스5:4 우리가 이 건축하는 자의 이름을 아뢰었으나

스5:5 하나님이 유다 장로들을 돌보셨으므로 그들이 능히 공사를 막지 못하고 이 일을 다리오에게 아뢰고 그 답장이 오기를 기다렸더라

스5:6 유브라데 강 건너편 총독 닷드내와 스달보스내와 그들의 동관인 유브라데 강 건너편 아바삭 사람이 다리오 왕에게 올린 글의 초본은 이러하니라

스5:7 그 글에 일렀으되 다리오 왕은 평안하옵소서

스5:8 왕께 아뢰옵나이다 우리가 유다 도에 가서 지극히 크신 하나님의 성전에 나아가 본즉 성전을 큰 돌로 세우며 벽에 나무를 얹고 부지런히 일하므로 공사가 그 손에서 형통하옵기에

스5:9 우리가 그 장로들에게 물어보기를 누가 너희에게 명령하여 이 성전을 건축하고 이 성곽을 마치라고 하였느냐 하고

스5:10 우리가 또 그 우두머리들의 이름을 적어 왕에게 아뢰고자 하여 그들의 이름을 물은즉

스5:11 그들이 우리에게 대답하여 이르기를 우리는 천지의 하나님의 종이라 예전에 건축되었던 성전을 우리가 다시 건축하노라 이는 본래 이스라엘의 큰 왕이 건축하여 완공한 것이었으나

스5:12 우리 조상들이 하늘에 계신 하나님을 노엽게 하였으므로 하나님이 그들을 갈대아 사람 바벨론 왕 느부갓네살의 손에 넘기시매 그가 이 성전을 헐며 이 백성을 사로잡아 바벨론으로 옮겼더니

스5:13 바벨론 왕 고레스 원년에 고레스 왕이 조서를 내려 하나님의 이 성전을 다시 건축하게 하고

스5:14 또 느부갓네살이 예루살렘 하나님의 성전 안에서 금, 은 그릇을 옮겨다가 바벨론 신당에 두었던 것을 고레스 왕이 그 신당에서 꺼내어 그가 세운 총독 세스바살 이라고 부르는 자에게 내주고

스5:15 일러 말하되 너는 이 그릇들을 가지고 가서 예루살렘 성전에 두고 하나님의 전을 제자리에 건축하라 하매

스5:16 이에 이 세스바살이 이르러 예루살렘 하나님의 성전 지대를 놓았고 그 때로부터 지금까지 건축하여 오나 아직도 마치지 못하였다 하였사오니

스5:17 이제 왕께서 좋게 여기시거든 바벨론에서 왕의 보물전각에서 조사하사 과연 고레스 왕이 조서를 내려 하나님의 이 성전을 예루살렘에 다시 건축하라 하셨는지 보시고 왕은 이 일에 대하여 왕의 기쁘신 뜻을 우리에게 보이소서 하였더라

사도행전 5 장.

행5:1 아나니아라 하는 사람이 그의 아내 삽비라와 더불어 소유를 팔아

행5:2 그 값에서 얼마를 감추매 그 아내도 알더라 얼마만 가져다가 사도들의 발 앞에 두니

행5:3 베드로가 이르되 아나니아야 어찌하여 사탄이 네 마음에 가득하여 네가 성령을 속이고 땅 값 얼마를 감추었느냐

행5:4 땅이 그대로 있을 때에는 네 땅이 아니며 판 후에도 네 마음대로 할 수가 없더냐 어찌하여 이 일을 네 마음에 두었느냐 사람에게 거짓말한 것이 아니요 하나님께로다

행5:5 아니니아가 이 말을 듣고 엎드러져 혼이 떠나니 이 일을 듣는 사람이 다 크게 두려워하더라

행5:6 젊은 사람들이 일어나 시신을 싸서 메고 나가 장사하니라

행5:7 세 시간쯤 지나 그의 아내가 그 일어난 일을 알지 못하고 들어오니

행5:8 베드로가 이르되 그 땅 판 값이 이것뿐이냐 내게 말하라 하니 이르되 예 이것뿐이라 하더라

행5:9 베드로가 이르되 너희가 어찌 함께 꾀하여 주의 영을 시험하려 하느냐 보라 네 남편을 장사하고 오는 사람들의 발이 문 앞에 이르렀으니 또 너를 메어 내가리라 하니

행5:10 곧 그가 베드로의 발 앞에 엎드러져 혼이 떠나는지라 젊은 사람들이 들어와 죽은 것을 보고 메어다가 그의 남편 곁에 장사하니

행5:11 온 교회와 이 일을 듣는 사람들이 다 크게 두려워하니라

행5:12 사도들의 손을 통하여 민간에 표적과 기사가 많이 일어나매 믿는 사람이 다 마음을 같이하여 솔로몬 행각에 모이고

행5:13 그 나머지는 감히 그들과 상종하는 사람이 없으나 백성이 칭송하더라

행5:14 믿고 주께로 나아오는 자가 더 많으니 남녀의 큰 무리더라

행5:15 심지어 병든 사람을 메고 거리에 나가 침대와 요 위에 누이고 베드로가 지날 때에 혹 그의 그림자라도 누구에게 덮일까 바라고

행5:16 예루살렘 부근의 수많은 사람들도 모여 병든 사람과 더러운 귀신에게 괴로움 받는 사람을 데리고 와서 다 나음을 얻으니라

행5:17 대제사장들과 그와 함께 있는 사람 즉 사두개인의 당파가 다 마음에 시기가 가득하여 일어나서

행5:18 사도들을 잡아다가 옥에 가두었더니

행5:19 주의 사자가 밤에 옥문을 열고 끌어내어 이르되

행5:20 가서 성전에 서서 이 생명의 말씀을 다 백성에게 말하라 하매

행5:21 그들이 듣고 새벽에 성전에 들어가서 가르치더니 대제사장과 그와 함께 있는 사람들이 와서 공회와 이스라엘 족속의 원로들을 다 모으고 사람을 옥에 보내어 사도들을 잡아오라 하니

행5:22 부하들이 가서 옥에서 사도들을 보지 못하고 돌아와

행5:23 이르되 우리가 보니 옥은 든든하게 잠기고 지키는 사람들이 문에 서 있으되 문을 열고 본즉 그 안에는 한 사람도 없더이다 하니

행5:24 성전 맡은 자와 제사장들이 이 말을 듣고 의혹하여 이 일이 어찌될까 하더니

행5:25 사람이 와서 알리되 보소서 옥에 가두었던 사람들이 성전에 서서 백성을 가르치더이다 하니

행5:26 성전 맡은 자가 부하들과 같이 가서 그들을 잡아왔으나 강제로 못함은 백성들이 돌로 칠까 두려워함이더라

행5:27 그들을 끌어다가 공회 앞에 세우니 대제사장이 물어

행5:28 이르되 우리가 이 이름으로 사람을 가르치지 말라고 엄금하였으되 너희가 너희 가르침을 예루살렘에 가득하게 하니 이 사람의 피를 우리에게로 돌리고자 함이로다

행5:29 베드로와 사도들이 대답하여 이르되 사람보다 하나님께 순종하는 것이 마땅하니라

행5:30 너희가 나무에 달아 죽인 예수를 우리 조상이 하나님이 살리시고

행5:31 이스라엘에게 회개함과 죄 사함을 주시려고 그를 오른손으로 높이사 임금과 구주로 삼으셨느니라

행5:32 우리는 이 일에 증인이요 하나님이 자기에게 순종하는 사람들에게 주신 성령도 그러하니라 하더라

행5:33 그들이 듣고 크게 노하여 사도들을 없이하고자 할새

행5:34 바리새인 가말리엘은 율법교사로 모든 백성에게 존경을 받는 자라 공회 중에 일어나 명하여 사도들을 잠깐 밖에 나가게 하고

행5:35 말하되 이스라엘 사람들아 너희가 이 사람들에 대하여 어떻게 하려는지 조심하라

행5:36 이전에 드다가 일어나 스스로 선전하매 사람이 약 사백 명이나 따르더니 그가 죽임을 당하매 따르던 모든 사람들이 흩어져 없어졌고

행5:37 그 후 호적할 때에 갈릴리의 유다가 일어나 백성을 꾀어 따르게 하다가 그도 망한즉 따르던 모든 사람들이 흩어졌느니라

행5:38 이제 내가 너희에게 말하노니 이 사람들을 상관하지 말고 버려 두라 이 사상과 이 소행이 사람으로부터 났으면 무너질 것이요

행5:39 만일 하나님께로부터 났으면 너희가 그들을 무너뜨릴 수 없겠고 도리어 하나님을 대적하는 자가 될까 하노라 하니

행5:40 그들이 옳게 여겨 사도들을 불러들여 채찍질하며 예수의 이름으로 말하는 것을 금하고 놓으니

행5:41 사도들은 그 이름을 위하여 능욕 받는 일에 합당한 자로 여기심을 기뻐하면서 공회 앞을 떠나니라

행5:42 그들이 날마다 성전에 있든지 집에 있든지 예수는 그리스도라고 가르치기와 전도하기를 그치지 아니하니라

Genesis 5.

5:1 This is the written account of Adam's line. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God.

5:2 He created them male and female and blessed them. And when they were created, he called them "man."

5:3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth.

5:4 After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters.

5:5 Altogether, Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.

5:6 When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father of Enosh.

5:7 And after he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters.

5:8 Altogether, Seth lived 912 years, and then he died.

5:9 When Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan.

5:10 And after he became the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters.

5:11 Altogether, Enosh lived 905 years, and then he died.

5:12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel.

5:13 And after he became the father of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters.

5:14 Altogether, Kenan lived 910 years, and then he died.

5:15 When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared.

5:16 And after he became the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters.

5:17 Altogether, Mahalalel lived 895 years, and then he died.

5:18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch.

5:19 And after he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters.

5:20 Altogether, Jared lived 962 years, and then he died.

5:21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah.

5:22 And after he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters.

5:23 Altogether, Enoch lived 365 years.

5:24 Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

5:25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech.

5:26 And after he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters.

5:27 Altogether, Methuselah lived 969 years, and then he died.

5:28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son.

5:29 He named him Noah and said, "He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the LORD has cursed."

5:30 After Noah was born, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters.

5:31 Altogether, Lamech lived 777 years, and then he died.

5:32 After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham and Japheth.

Matthew 5.

5:1 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,

5:2 and he began to teach them, saying:

5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

5:5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

5:7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

5:10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

5:11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

5:12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

5:13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

5:14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.

5:15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

5:17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

5:18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

5:19 Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

5:20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

5:21 "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.'

5:22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.

5:23 "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,

5:24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.

5:25 "Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.

5:26 I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

5:27 "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'

5:28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

5:29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

5:30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

5:31 "It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.'

5:32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.

5:33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.'

5:34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne;

5:35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.

5:36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black.

5:37 Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

5:38 "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.'

5:39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

5:40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.

5:41 If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.

5:42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

5:43 "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'

5:44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

5:45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

5:46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?

5:47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?

5:48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Ezra 5.

5:1 Now Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the prophet, a descendant of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them.

5:2 Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak set to work to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them, helping them.

5:3 At that time Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and their associates went to them and asked, "Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and restore this structure?"

5:4 They also asked, "What are the names of the men constructing this building?"

5:5 But the eye of their God was watching over the elders of the Jews, and they were not stopped until a report could go to Darius and his written reply be received.

5:6 This is a copy of the letter that Tattenai, governor of Trans-Euphrates, and Shethar-Bozenai and their associates, the officials of Trans-Euphrates, sent to King Darius.

5:7 The report they sent him read as follows: To King Darius: Cordial greetings.

5:8 The king should know that we went to the district of Judah, to the temple of the great God. The people are building it with large stones and placing the timbers in the walls. The work is being carried on with diligence and is making rapid progress under their direction.

5:9 We questioned the elders and asked them, "Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and restore this structure?"

5:10 We also asked them their names, so that we could write down the names of their leaders for your information.

5:11 This is the answer they gave us: "We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the temple that was built many years ago, one that a great king of Israel built and finished.

5:12 But because our fathers angered the God of heaven, he handed them over to Nebuchadnezzar the Chaldean, king of Babylon, who destroyed this temple and deported the people to Babylon.

5:13 "However, in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, King Cyrus issued a decree to rebuild this house of God.

5:14 He even removed from the temple of Babylon the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to the temple in Babylon. "Then King Cyrus gave them to a man named Sheshbazzar, whom he had appointed governor,

5:15 and he told him, 'Take these articles and go and deposit them in the temple in Jerusalem. And rebuild the house of God on its site.'

5:16 So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God in Jerusalem. From that day to the present it has been under construction but is not yet finished."

5:17 Now if it pleases the king, let a search be made in the royal archives of Babylon to see if King Cyrus did in fact issue a decree to rebuild this house of God in Jerusalem. Then let the king send us his decision in this matter.

Acts (of the Apostles) 5.

5:1 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property.

5:2 With his wife's full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles' feet.

5:3 Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?

5:4 Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God."

5:5 When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened.

5:6 Then the young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.

5:7 About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.

5:8 Peter asked her, "Tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?" "Yes," she said, "that is the price."

5:9 Peter said to her, "How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also."

5:10 At that moment she fell down at his feet and died. Then the young men came in and, finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

5:11 Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

5:12 The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon's Colonnade.

5:13 No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people.

5:14 Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.

5:15 As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.

5:16 Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by evil spirits, and all of them were healed.

5:17 Then the high priest and all his associates, who were members of the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy.

5:18 They arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.

5:19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out.

5:20 "Go, stand in the temple courts," he said, "and tell the people the full message of this new life."

5:21 At daybreak they entered the temple courts, as they had been told, and began to teach the people. When the high priest and his associates arrived, they called together the Sanhedrin--the full assembly of the elders of Israel--and sent to the jail for the apostles.

5:22 But on arriving at the jail, the officers did not find them there. So they went back and reported,

5:23 "We found the jail securely locked, with the guards standing at the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside."

5:24 On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests were puzzled, wondering what would come of this.

5:25 Then someone came and said, "Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people."

5:26 At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people would stone them.

5:27 Having brought the apostles, they made them appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest.

5:28 "We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name," he said. "Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man's blood."

5:29 Peter and the other apostles replied: "We must obey God rather than men!

5:30 The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead--whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree.

5:31 God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel.

5:32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."

5:33 When they heard this, they were furious and wanted to put them to death.

5:34 But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, who was honored by all the people, stood up in the Sanhedrin and ordered that the men be put outside for a little while.

5:35 Then he addressed them: "Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men.

5:36 Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing.

5:37 After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered.

5:38 Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail.

5:39 But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God."

5:40 His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

5:41 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.

5:42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.
