창세기 4 장.

창4:1 아담이 그의 아내 하와와 동침하매 하와가 임신하여 가인을 낳고 이르되 내가 여호와로 말미암아 득남하였다 하니라

창4:2 그가 또 가인의 아우 아벨을 낳았는데 아벨은 양치는 자였고 가인은 농사하는 자였더라

창4:3 세월이 지난 후에 가인은 땅의 소산으로 제물을 삼아 여호와께 드렸고

창4:4 아벨은 자기도 양의 첫 새끼와 그 기름으로 드렸더니 여호와께서 아벨과 그의 제물은 받으셨으나

창4:5 가인과 그의 제물은 받지 아니하신지라 가인이 몹시 분하여 안색이 변하니

창4:6 여호와께서 가인에게 이르시되 네가 분하여 함은 어찌 됨이며 안색이 변함은 어찌 됨이냐

창4:7 네가 선을 행하면 어찌 낯을 들지 못하겠느냐 선을 행하지 아니하면 죄가 문에 엎드려 있느니라 죄가 너를 원하나 너는 죄를 다스릴지니라

창4:8 가인이 그의 아우 아벨에게 말하고 그들이 들에 있을 때에 가인이 그의 아우 아벨을 쳐 죽이니라

창4:9 여호와께서 가인에게 이르시되 네 아우 아벨이 어디 있느냐 그가 이르되 내가 알지 못하나이다 내가 내 아우를 지키는 자니이까

창4:10 이르시되 네가 무엇을 하였느냐 네 아우의 핏소리가 땅에서부터 내게 호소하느니라

창4:11 땅이 그 입을 벌려 네 손에서부터 네 아우의 피를 받았은즉 네가 땅에서 저주를 받으리니

창4:12 네가 밭을 갈아도 땅이 다시는 그 효력을 네게 주지 아니할 것이요 너는 땅에서 피하며 유리하는 자가 되리라

창4:13 가인이 여호와께 아뢰되 내 죄짐을 지기가 너무 무거우니이다

창4:14 주께서 오늘 이 지면에서 나를 쫓아내시온즉 내가 주의 낯을 뵈옵지 못하리니 내가 땅에서 피하며 유리하는 자가 될지라 무릇 나를 만나는 자마다 나를 죽이겠나이다

창4:15 여호와께서 그에게 이르시되 그렇지 아니하다 가인을 죽이는 자는 벌을 칠 배나 받으리라 하시고 가인에게 표를 주사 그를 만나는 모든 사람에게서 죽임을 면하게 하시니라

창4:16 가인이 여호와 앞을 떠나서 에덴 동쪽 놋 땅에 거주하더니

창4:17 아내와 동침하매 그가 임신하여 에녹을 낳은지라 가인이 성을 쌓고 그의 아들의 이름으로 성을 이름하여 에녹이라 하니라

창4:18 에녹이 이랏을 낳고 이랏은 므후야엘을 낳고 므후야엘은 므드사엘을 낳고 므드사엘은 라멕을 낳았더라

창4:19 라멕이 두 아내를 맞이하였으니 하나의 이름은 아다요 하나의 이름은 씰라였더라

창4:20 아다는 야발을 낳았으니 그는 장막에 거주하며 가축을 치는 자의 조상이 되었고

창4:21 그의 아우의 이름은 유발이니 그는 수금과 퉁소를 잡는 모든자의 조상이 되었으며

창4:22 씰라는 두발가인을 낳았으니 그는 구리와 쇠로 여러 가지 기구를 만드는 자요 두발가인의 누이는 나아마였더라

창4:23 라멕이 아내들에게 이르되 아다와 씰라여 내 목소리를 들으라 라멕의 아내들이여 내 말을 들으라 나의 상처로 말미암아 내가 사람을 죽였고 나의 상함으로 말미암아 소년을 죽였도다

창4:24 가인을 위하여는 벌이 칠 배일진대 라멕을 위하여는 벌이 칠십칠 배이리로다

창4:25 아담이 다시 자기 아내와 동침하매 그가 아들을 낳아 그의 이름을 셋이라 하였으니 이는 하나님이 내게 가인이 죽인 아벨 대신에 다른 씨를 주셨다 함이며

창4:26 셋도 아들을 낳고 그의 이름을 에노스라 하였으며 그 때에 사람들이 비로소 여호와의 이름을 불렀더라

마태복음 4 장.

마4:1 그 때에 예수께서 성령에게 이끌리어 마귀에게 시험을 받으러 광야로 가사

마4:2 사십 일을 밤낮으로 금식하신 후에 주리신지라

마4:3 시험하는 자가 예수께 나아와서 이르되 네가 만일 하나님의 아들이어든 명하여 이 돌들로 떡덩이가 되게 하라

마4:4 예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 기록되었으되 사람이 떡으로만 살 것이 아니요 하나님의 입으로부터 나오는 모든 말씀으로 살 것이라 하였느니라 하시니

마4:5 이에 마귀가 예수를 거룩한 성으로 데려다가 성전 꼭대기에 세우고

마4:6 이르되 네가 만일 하나님의 아들이어든 뛰어내리라 기록하였으되 그가 너를 위하여 그 사자들을 명하시리니 그들이 손으로 너를 받들어 발이 돌에 부딪치지 않게 하리로다 하였느니라

마4:7 예수께서 이르시되 또 기록되었으되 주 너의 하나님을 시험하지 말라 하였느니라 하시니

마4:8 마귀가 또 그를 데리고 지극히 높은 산으로 가서 천하 만국과 그 영광을 보여

마4:9 이르되 만일 내게 엎드려 경배하면 이 모든 것을 네게 주리라

마4:10 이에 예수께서 말씀하시되 사탄아 물러가라 기록되었으되 주 너의 하나님께 경배하고 다만 그를 섬기라 하였느니라

마4:11 이에 마귀는 예수를 떠나고 천사들이 나아와서 수종드니라

마4:12 예수께서 요한이 잡혔음을 들으시고 갈릴리로 물러가셨다가

마4:13 나사렛을 떠나 스불론과 납달리 지경 해변에 있는 가버나움에 가서 사시니

마4:14 이는 선지자 이사야를 통하여 하신 말씀을 이루려 하심이라 일렀으되

마4:15 스불론 땅과 납달리 땅과 요단 강 저편 해변 길과 이방의 갈릴리여

마4:16 흑암에 앉은 백성이 큰 빛을 보았고 사망의 땅과 그늘에 앉은 자들에게 빛이 비취었도다 하였느니라

마4:17 이 때부터 예수께서 비로소 전파하여 이르시되 회개하라 천국이 가까이 왔느니라 하시더라

마4:18 갈릴리 해변에 다니시다가 두 형제 곧 베드로라 하는 시몬과 그의 형제 안드레가 바다에 그물 던지는 것을 보시니 그들은 어부라

마4:19 말씀하시되 나를 따라오라 내가 너희를 사람을 낚는 어부가 되게 하리라 하시니

마4:20 그들이 곧 그물을 버려 두고 예수를 따르니라

마4:21 거기서 더 가시다가 다른 두 형제 곧 세베대의 아들 야고보와 그의 형제 요한이 그의 아버지 세베대와 함께 배에서 그물 깁는 것을 보시고 부르시니

마4:22 그들이 곧 배와 아버지를 버려 두고 예수를 따르니라

마4:23 예수께서 온 갈릴리에 두루 다니사 그들의 회당에서 가르치시며 천국 복음을 전파하시며 백성 중의 모든 병과 모든 약한 것을 고치시니

마4:24 그의 소문이 온 수리아에 퍼진지라 사람들이 모든 앓는 자 곧 각종 병에 걸려서 고통 당하는 자, 귀신 들린 자, 간질하는 자, 중풍병자들을 데려오니 그들을 고치시더라

마4:25 갈릴리와 데가볼리와 예루살렘과 유대와 요단 강 건너편에서 수많은 무리가 따르니라

에스라 4 장.

스4:1 사로잡혔던 자들의 자손이 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와의 성전을 건축한다 함을 유다와 베냐민의 대적이 듣고

스4:2 스룹바벨과 족장들에게 나아와 이르되 우리도 너희와 함께 건축하게 하라 우리도 너희 같이 너희 하나님을 찾노라 앗수르 왕 에살핫돈이 우리를 이리로 오게한 날부터 우리가 하나님께 제사를 드리노라 하니

스4:3 스룹바벨과 예수아와 기타 이스라엘 족장들이 이르되 우리 하나님의 성전을 건축하는 데 너희는 우리와 상관이 없느니라 바사 왕 고레스가 우리에게 명령하신 대로 우리가 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와를 위하여 홀로 건축하리라 하였더니

스4:4 이로부터 그 땅 백성이 유다 백성의 손을 약하게 하여 그 건축을 방해하되

스4:5 바사 왕 고레스의 시대부터 바사 왕 다리오가 즉위할 때까지 관리들에게 뇌물을 주어 그 계획을 막았으며

스4:6 또 아하수에로가 즉위할 때에 그들이 글을 올려 유다와 예루살렘 주민을 고발하니라

스4:7 아닥사스다 때에 비슬람과 미드르닷과 다브엘과 그의 동료들이 바사 왕 아닥사스다에게 글을 올렸으니 그 글은 아람 문자와 아람 방언으로 써서 진술하였더라

스4:8 방백 르훔과 서기관 심새가 아닥사스다 왕에게 올려 예루살렘 백성을 고발한 그 글에

스4:9 방백 르훔과 서기관 심새와 그의 동료 디나 사람과 아바삿 사람과 다블래 사람과 아바새 사람과 아렉 사람과 바벨론 사람과 수산 사람과 데해 사람과 엘람 사람과

스4:10 그 밖에 백성 곧 존귀한 오스납발이 사마리아 성과 유브라데 강 건너편 다른 땅에 옮겨 둔 자들과 함께 고발한다 하였더라

스4:11 아닥사스다 왕에게 올린 그 글의 초본은 이러하니 강 건너편에 있는 신하들은

스4:12 왕에게 아뢰나이다 당신에게서 우리에게로 올라온 유다 사람들이 예루살렘에 이르러 이 패역하고 악한 성읍을 건축하는데 이미 그 기초를 수축하고 성곽을 건축하오니

스4:13 이제 왕은 아시옵소서 만일 이 성읍을 건축하고 그 성곽을 완공하면 저 무리가 다시는 조공과 관세와 통행세를 바치지 아니하리니 결국 왕들에게 손해가 되리이다

스4:14 우리가 이제 왕궁의 소금을 먹으므로 왕이 수치 당함을 차마 보지 못하여 사람을 보내어 왕에게 아뢰오니

스4:15 왕은 조상들의 사기를 살펴보시면 그 사기에서 이 성읍은 패역한 성읍이라 예로부터 그 중에서 항상 반역하는 일을 행하여 왕들과 각 도에 손해가 된 것을 보시고 아실지라 이 성읍이 무너짐도 이 때문이니이다

스4:16 이제 감히 왕에게 아뢰오니 이 성읍이 중건되어 성곽이 준공되면 이로 말미암아 왕의 강 건너편 영지가 없어지리이다 하였더라

스4:17 왕이 방백 르훔과 서기관 심새와 사마리아에 거주하는 그들 동관들과 강 건너편 다른 땅 백성에게 조서를 내리니 일렀으되 너희는 평안할지어다

스4:18 너희가 올린 글을 내 앞에서 낭독시키고

스4:19 명령하여 살펴보니 과연 이 성읍이 예로부터 왕들을 거역하며 그 중에서 항상 패역하고 반역하는 일을 행하였으며

스4:20 옛적에는 예루살렘을 다스리는 큰 군왕들이 있어서 강 건너편 모든 땅이 그들에게 조공과 관세와 통행세를 다 바쳤도다

스4:21 이제 너희는 명령을 전하여 그 사람들에게 공사를 그치게 하여 그 성을 건축하지 못하게 하고 내가 다시 조서 내리기를 기다리라

스4:22 너희는 삼가서 이 일에 게으르지 말라 어찌하여 화를 더하여 왕들에게 손해가 되게 하랴 하였더라

스4:23 아닥사스다 왕의 조서 초본이 르훔과 서기관 심새와 그의 동료 앞에서 낭독되매 그들이 예루살렘으로 급히 가서 유다 사람들을 보고 권력으로 억제하여 그 공사를 그치게 하니

스4:24 이에 예루살렘에서 하나님의 성전 공사가 바사 왕 다리오 제이년까지 중단되니라

사도행전 4 장.

행4:1 사도들이 백성에게 말할 때에 제사장들과 성전 맡은 자와 사두개인들이 이르러

행4:2 예수 안에 죽은 자의 부활이 있다고 백성을 가르치고 전함을 싫어하여

행4:3 그들을 잡으매 날이 이미 저물었으므로 이튿날까지 가두었으나

행4:4 말씀을 들은 사람 중에 믿는 자가 많으니 남자의 수가 약 오천이나 되었더라

행4:5 이튿날 관리들과 장로들과 서기관들이 예루살렘에 모였는데

행4:6 대제사장 안나스와 가야바와 요한과 알렉산더와 및 대제사장의 문중이 다 참여하여

행4:7 사도들을 가운데 세우고 묻되 너희가 무슨 권세와 누구의 이름으로 이 일을 행하였느냐

행4:8 이에 베드로가 성령이 충만하여 이르되 백성의 관리들과 장로들아

행4:9 만일 병자에게 행한 착한 일에 대하여 이 사람이 어떻게 구원을 받았느냐고 오늘 우리에게 질문한다면

행4:10 너희와 모든 이스라엘 백성들은 알라 너희가 십자가에 못 박고 하나님이 죽은 자 가운데서 살리신 나사렛 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 이 사람이 건강하게 되어 너희 앞에 섰느니라

행4:11 이 예수는 너희 건축자들의 버린 돌로서 집 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되었느니라

행4:12 다른 이로써는 구원을 받을 수 없나니 천하 사람 중에 구원을 받을 만한 다른 이름을 우리에게 주신 일이 없음이라 하였더라

행4:13 그들이 베드로와 요한이 담대하게 말함을 보고 그들을 본래 학문 없는 범인으로 알았다가 이상히 여기며 또 전에 예수와 함께 있던 줄도 알고

행4:14 또 병 나은 사람이 그들과 함께 서 있는 것을 보고 비난할 말이 없는지라

행4:15 명하여 공회에서 나라가 하고 서로 의논하여 이르되

행4:16 이 사람들을 어떻게 할까 그들로 말미암아 유명한 표적 나타난 것이 예루살렘에 사는 모든 사람에게 알려졌으니 우리도 부인할 수 없는지라

행4:17 이것이 민간에 더 퍼지지 못하게 그들을 위협하여 이후에는 이 이름으로 아무에게도 말하지 말게 하자 하고

행4:18 그들을 불러 경고하여 도무지 예수의 이름으로 말하지도 말고 가르치지도 말라 하니

행4:19 베드로와 요한이 대답하여 이르되 하나님 앞에서 너희의 말을 듣는 것이 하나님의 말씀을 듣는 것보다 옳은가 판단하라

행4:20 우리는 보고 들은 것을 말하지 아니할 수 없다 하니

행4:21 관리들이 백성들 때문에 그들을 어떻게 처벌할지 방법을 찾지 못하고 다시 위협하여 놓아 주었으니 이는 모든 사람이 그 된 일을 보고 하나님께 영광을 돌림이라

행4:22 이 표적으로 병 나은 사람은 사십여 세나 되었더라

행4:23 사도들이 놓이매 그 동료에게 가서 제사장들과 장로들의 말을 다 알리니

행4:24 그들이 듣고 한마음으로 하나님께 소리를 높여 이르되 대주재여 천지와 바다와 그 가운데 만물을 지은 이시오

행4:25 또 주의 종 우리 조상 다윗의 입을 통하여 성령으로 말씀하시기를 어찌하여 열방이 분노하며 족속들이 허사를 경영하였는고

행4:26 세상의 군왕들이 나서며 관리들이 함께 모여 주와 그의 그리스도를 대적하도다 하신 이로소이다

행4:27 과연 헤롯과 본디오 빌라도는 이방인과 이스라엘 백성과 합세하여 하나님께서 기름 부으신 거룩한 종 예수를 거슬러

행4:28 하나님의 권능과 뜻대로 이루려고 예정하신 그것을 행하려고 이 성에 모였나이다

행4:29 주여 이제도 그들의 위협함을 굽어보시옵고 또 종들로 하여금 담대히 하나님의 말씀을 전하게 하여 주시오며

행4:30 손을 내밀어 병을 낫게 하시옵고 표적과 기사가 거룩한 종 예수의 이름으로 이루어지게 하옵소서 하더라

행4:31 빌기를 다하매 모인 곳이 진동하더니 무리가 다 성령이 충만하여 담대히 하나님의 말씀을 전하니라

행4:32 믿는 무리가 한마음과 한 뜻이 되어 모든 물건을 서로 통용하고 자기 재물을 조금이라도 자기 것이라 하는 이가 하나도 없더라

행4:33 사도들이 큰 권능으로 주 예수의 부활을 증언하니 무리가 큰 은혜를 받아

행4:34 그 중에 가난한 사람이 없으니 이는 밭과 집 있는 자는 팔아 그 판 것의 값을 가져다가

행4:35 사도들의 발 앞에 두매 그들이 각 사람의 필요를 따라 나누어 줌이라

행4:36 구브로에서 난 레위족 사람이 있으니 이름은 요셉이라 사도들이 일컬어 바나바라(번역하면 위로의 아들이라)하니

행4:37 그가 밭이 있으매 팔아 그 값을 가지고 사도들의 발 앞에 두니라

Genesis 4.

4:1 Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man."

4:2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.

4:3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD.

4:4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,

4:5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

4:6 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?

4:7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."

4:8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

4:9 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?"

4:10 The LORD said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground.

4:11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.

4:12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth."

4:13 Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is more than I can bear.

4:14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me."

4:15 But the LORD said to him, "Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.

4:16 So Cain went out from the LORD'S presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

4:17 Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.

4:18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.

4:19 Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.

4:20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.

4:21 His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.

4:22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.

4:23 Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me.

4:24 If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times."

4:25 Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, "God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him."

4:26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on the name of the LORD.

Matthew 4.

4:1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.

4:2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

4:3 The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread."

4:4 Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

4:5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.

4:6 "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: "'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"

4:7 Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"

4:8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.

4:9 "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me."

4:10 Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'"

4:11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

4:12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he returned to Galilee.

4:13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali--

4:14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:

4:15 "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, along the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles--

4:16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned."

4:17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."

4:18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.

4:19 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."

4:20 At once they left their nets and followed him.

4:21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them,

4:22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

4:23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people.

4:24 News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and he healed them.

4:25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.

Ezra 4.

4:1 When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the LORD, the God of Israel,

4:2 they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the families and said, "Let us help you build because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to him since the time of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us here."

4:3 But Zerubbabel, Jeshua and the rest of the heads of the families of Israel answered, "You have no part with us in building a temple to our God. We alone will build it for the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia, commanded us."

4:4 Then the peoples around them set out to discourage the people of Judah and make them afraid to go on building.

4:5 They hired counselors to work against them and frustrate their plans during the entire reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia.

4:6 At the beginning of the reign of Xerxes, they lodged an accusation against the people of Judah and Jerusalem.

4:7 And in the days of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel and the rest of his associates wrote a letter to Artaxerxes. The letter was written in Aramaic script and in the Aramaic language.

4:8 Rehum the commanding officer and Shimshai the secretary wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king as follows:

4:9 Rehum the commanding officer and Shimshai the secretary, together with the rest of their associates--the judges and officials over the men from Tripolis, Persia, Erech and Babylon, the Elamites of Susa,

4:10 and the other people whom the great and honorable Ashurbanipal deported and settled in the city of Samaria and elsewhere in Trans-Euphrates.

4:11 (This is a copy of the letter they sent him.) To King Artaxerxes, From your servants, the men of Trans-Euphrates:

4:12 The king should know that the Jews who came up to us from you have gone to Jerusalem and are rebuilding that rebellious and wicked city. They are restoring the walls and repairing the foundations.

4:13 Furthermore, the king should know that if this city is built and its walls are restored, no more taxes, tribute or duty will be paid, and the royal revenues will suffer.

4:14 Now since we are under obligation to the palace and it is not proper for us to see the king dishonored, we are sending this message to inform the king,

4:15 so that a search may be made in the archives of your predecessors. In these records you will find that this city is a rebellious city, troublesome to kings and provinces, a place of rebellion from ancient times. That is why this city was destroyed.

4:16 We inform the king that if this city is built and its walls are restored, you will be left with nothing in Trans-Euphrates.

4:17 The king sent this reply: To Rehum the commanding officer, Shimshai the secretary and the rest of their associates living in Samaria and elsewhere in Trans-Euphrates: Greetings.

4:18 The letter you sent us has been read and translated in my presence.

4:19 I issued an order and a search was made, and it was found that this city has a long history of revolt against kings and has been a place of rebellion and sedition.

4:20 Jerusalem has had powerful kings ruling over the whole of Trans-Euphrates, and taxes, tribute and duty were paid to them.

4:21 Now issue an order to these men to stop work, so that this city will not be rebuilt until I so order.

4:22 Be careful not to neglect this matter. Why let this threat grow, to the detriment of the royal interests?

4:23 As soon as the copy of the letter of King Artaxerxes was read to Rehum and Shimshai the secretary and their associates, they went immediately to the Jews in Jerusalem and compelled them by force to stop.

4:24 Thus the work on the house of God in Jerusalem came to a standstill until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

Acts (of the Apostles) 4.

4:1 The priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to Peter and John while they were speaking to the people.

4:2 They were greatly disturbed because the apostles were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.

4:3 They seized Peter and John, and because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day.

4:4 But many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand.

4:5 The next day the rulers, elders and teachers of the law met in Jerusalem.

4:6 Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and the other men of the high priest's family.

4:7 They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: "By what power or what name did you do this?"

4:8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: "Rulers and elders of the people!

4:9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a cripple and are asked how he was healed,

4:10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.

4:11 He is "'the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone.'

4:12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

4:13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.

4:14 But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say.

4:15 So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together.

4:16 "What are we going to do with these men?" they asked. "Everybody living in Jerusalem knows they have done an outstanding miracle, and we cannot deny it.

4:17 But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn these men to speak no longer to anyone in this name."

4:18 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.

4:19 But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God.

4:20 For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard."

4:21 After further threats they let them go. They could not decide how to punish them, because all the people were praising God for what had happened.

4:22 For the man who was miraculously healed was over forty years old.

4:23 On their release, Peter and John went back to their own people and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them.

4:24 When they heard this, they raised their voices together in prayer to God. "Sovereign Lord," they said, "you made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and everything in them.

4:25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: "'Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?

4:26 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One.'

4:27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.

4:28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.

4:29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness.

4:30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus."

4:31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.

4:32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had.

4:33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all.

4:34 There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales

4:35 and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.

4:36 Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means Son of Encouragement),

4:37 sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet.
