사무엘하 19 장.

삼하19:1 어떤 사람이 요압에게 아뢰되 왕이 압살롬을 위하여 울며 슬퍼하시나이다 하니

삼하19:2 왕이 그 아들을 위하여 슬퍼한다 함이 그 날에 백성들에게 들리매 그 날의 승리가 모든 백성에게 슬픔이 된지라

삼하19:3 그 날에 백성들이 싸움에 쫓겨 부끄러워 도망함 같이 가만히 성읍으로 들어가니라

삼하19:4 왕이 그의 얼굴을 가리고 큰 소리로 부르되 내 아들 압살롬아 압살롬아 내 아들아 내 아들아 하니

삼하19:5 요압이 집에 들어가서 왕께 말씀하되 왕께서 오늘 왕의 생명과 왕의 자녀의 생명과 처첩과 비빈들의 생명을 구원한 모든 부하들의 얼굴을 부끄럽게 하시니

삼하19:6 이는 왕께서 미워하는 자는 사랑하시며 사랑하는 자는 미워하시고 오늘 지휘관들과 부하들을 멸시하심을 나타내심이라 오늘 내가 깨달으니 만일 압살롬이 살고 오늘 우리가 다 죽었다면 왕이 마땅히 여기실 뻔하였나이다

삼하19:7 이제 곧 일어나 나가 왕의 부하들의 마음을 위로하여 말씀하옵소서 내가 여호와를 두고 맹세하옵나니 왕이 만일 나가지 아니하시면 오늘 밤에 한 사람도 왕과 함께 머물지 아니할지라 그리하면 그 화가 왕이 젊었을 때부터 지금까지 당하신 모든 화보다 더욱 심하리이다 하니

삼하19:8 왕이 일어나 성문에 앉으매 어떤 사람이 모든 백성에게 말하되 왕이 문에 앉아 계신다 하니 모든 백성이 왕 앞으로 나아오니라 이스라엘은 이미 각기 장막으로 도망하였더라

삼하19:9 이스라엘 모든 지파 백성들이 변론하여 이르되 왕이 우리를 원수의 손에서 구원하여 내셨고 또 우리를 블레셋 사람들의 손에서 구원하셨으나 이제 압살롬을 피하여 그 땅에서 나가셨고

삼하19:10 우리가 기름을 부어 우리를 다스리게 한 압살롬은 싸움에서 죽었거늘 이제 너희가 어찌하여 왕을 도로 모셔 올 일에 잠잠하고 있느냐 하니라

삼하19:11 다윗 왕이 사독과 아비아달 두 제사장에게 소식을 전하여 이르되 너희는 유다 장로들에게 말하여 이르기를 왕의 말씀이 온 이스라엘이 왕을 왕궁으로 도로 모셔오자 하는 말이 왕께 들렸거늘 너희는 어찌하여 왕을 궁으로 모시는 일에 나중이 되느냐

삼하19:12 너희는 내 형제요 내 골육이거늘 너희는 어찌하여 왕을 도로 모셔 오는 일에 나중이 되리요 하셨다 하고

삼하19:13 너희는 또 아마사에게 이르기를 너는 내 골육이 아니냐 네가 요압을 이어서 항상 내 앞에서 지휘관이 되지 아니하면 하나님이 내게 벌 위에 벌을 내리시기를 바라노라 하셨다 하라 하여

삼하19:14 모든 유다 사람들의 마음을 하나 같이 기울게 하매 그들이 왕께 전갈을 보내어 이르되 당신께서는 모든 부하들과 더불어 돌아오소서 한지라

삼하19:15 왕이 돌아와 요단에 이르매 유다 족속이 왕을 맞아 요단을 건너가게 하려고 길갈로 오니라

삼하19:16 바후림에 있는 베냐민 사람 게라의 아들 시므이가 급히 유다 사람과 함께 다윗 왕을 맞으러 내려올 때에

삼하19:17 베냐민 사람 천 명이 그와 함께 하고 사울 집안의 종 시바도 그의 아들 열다섯과 종 스무 명과 더불어 그와 함께 하여 요단 강을 밟고 건너 왕 앞으로 나아오니라

삼하19:18 왕의 가족을 건너가게 하며 왕이 좋게 여기는 대로 쓰게 하려 하여 나룻배로 건너가니 왕이 요단을 건너가게 할 때에 게라의 아들 시므이가 왕 앞에 엎드려

삼하19:19 왕께 아뢰되 내 주여 원하건대 내게 죄를 돌리지 마옵소서 내 주 왕께서 예루살렘에서 나오시던 날에 종의 패역한 일을 기억하지 마시오며 왕이 마음에 두지 마옵소서

삼하19:20 왕의 종 내가 범죄한 줄 아옵기에 오늘 요셉의 온 족속 중 내가 먼저 내려와서 내 주 왕을 영접하나이다 하니

삼하19:21 스루야의 아들 아비새가 대답하여 이르되 시므이가 여호와의 기름 부으신 자를 저주하였으니 그로 말미암아 죽어야 마땅하지 아니하니이까 하니라

삼하19:22 다윗이 이르되 스루야의 아들들아 내가 너희와 무슨 상관이 있기에 너희가 오늘 나의 원수가 되느냐 오늘 어찌하여 이스라엘 가운데에서 사람을 죽이겠느냐 내가 오늘 이스라엘의 왕이 된 것을 내가 알지 못하리요 하고

삼하19:23 왕이 시므이에게 이르되 네가 죽지 아니하리라 하고 그에게 맹세하니라

삼하19:24 사울의 손자 므비보셋이 내려와 왕을 맞으니 그는 왕이 떠난 날부터 평안히 돌아오는 날까지 그의 발을 맵시 내지 아니하며 그의 수염을 깎지 아니하며 옷을 빨지 아니하였더라

삼하19:25 예루살렘에서 와서 왕을 맞을 때에 왕이 그에게 물어 이르되 므비보셋이여 네가 어찌하여 나와 함께 가지 아니하였더냐 하니

삼하19:26 대답하되 내 주 왕이여 왕의 종인 나는 다리를 절므로 내 나귀에 안장을 지워 그 위에 타고 왕과 함께 가려 하였더니 내 종이 나를 속이고

삼하19:27 종인 나를 내 주 왕께 모함하였나이다 내 주 왕께서는 하나님의 사자와 같으시니 왕의 처분대로 하옵소서

삼하19:28 내 아버지의 온 집이 내 주 왕 앞에서는 다만 죽을 사람이 되지 아니하였나이까 그러나 종을 왕의 상에서 음식 먹는 자 가운데에 두셨사오니 내게 아직 무슨 공의가 있어서 다시 왕께 부르짖을 수 있사오리이까 하니라

삼하19:29 왕이 그에게 이르되 네가 어찌하여 또 네 일을 말하느냐 내가 이르노니 너는 시바와 밭을 나누라 하니

삼하19:30 므비보셋이 왕께 아뢰되 내 주 왕께서 평안히 왕궁에 돌아오시게 되었으니 그로 그 전부를 차지하게 하옵소서 하니라

삼하19:31 길르앗 사람 바르실래가 왕이 요단을 건너가게 하려고 로글림에서 내려와 함께 요단에 이르니

삼하19:32 바르실래는 매우 늙어 나이가 팔십 세라 그는 큰 부자이므로 왕이 마하나임에 머물 때에 그가 왕을 공궤하였더라

삼하19:33 왕이 바르실래에게 이르되 너는 나와 함께 건너가자 예루살렘에서 내가 너를 공궤하리라

삼하19:34 바르실래가 왕께 아뢰되 내 생명의 날이 얼마나 있사옵겠기에 어찌 왕과 함께 예루살렘으로 올라가리이까

삼하19:35 내 나이가 이제 팔십 세라 어떻게 좋고 흥한 것을 분간할 수 있사오며 음식의 맛을 알 수 있사오리이까 이 종이 어떻게 다시 노래하는 남자나 여인의 소리를 알아들을 수 있사오리이까 어찌하여 종이 내 주 왕께 아직도 누를 끼치리이까

삼하19:36 당신의 종은 왕을 모시고 요단을 건너려는 것뿐이거늘 왕께서 어찌하여 이같은 상으로 내게 갚으려 하시나이까

삼하19:37 청하건대 당신의 종을 돌려보내옵소서 내가 내 고향 부모의 묘 곁에서 죽으려 하나이다 그러나 왕의 종 김함이 여기 있사오니 청하건대 그가 내 주 왕과 함께 건너가게 하시옵고 왕의 처분대로 그에게 베푸소서 하니라

삼하19:38 왕이 대답하되 김함이 나와 함께 건너가리니 나는 네가 좋아하는 대로 그에게 베풀겠고 또 네가 내게 구하는 것은 다 너를 위하여 시행하리라 하니라

삼하19:39 백성이 다 요단을 건너매 왕도 건너가서 왕이 바르실래에게 입을 맞추고 그에게 복을 비니 그가 자기 곳으로 돌아가니라

삼하19:40 왕이 길갈로 건너오고 김함도 함께 건너오니 온 유다 백성과 이스라엘 백성의 절반이나 왕과 함께 건너니라

삼하19:41 온 이스라엘 사람이 왕께 나아와 왕께 아뢰되 우리 형제 유다 사람들이 어찌 왕을 도둑하여 왕과 왕의 집안과 왕을 따르는 모든 사람을 인도하여 요단을 건너가게 하였나이까 하매

삼하19:42 모든 유다 사람이 이스라엘 사람에게 대답하되 왕은 우리의 종친인 까닭이라 너희가 어찌 이 일에 대하여 분 내느냐 우리가 왕의 것을 조금이라도 얻어 먹었느냐 왕께서 우리에게 선물로 주신 것이 있느냐

삼하19:43 이스라엘 사람이 유다 사람에게 대답하여 이르되 우리는 왕에 대하여 열 몫을 가졌으니 다윗에게 대하여 너희보다 더욱 관계가 있거늘 너희가 어찌 우리를 멸시하여 우리 왕을 모셔 오는 일에 먼저 우리와 의논하지 아니하였느냐 하나 유다 사람의 말이 이스라엘 사람의 말보다 더 강경하였더라

고린도후서 12 장.

고후12:1 무익하나마 내가 부득불 자랑하노니 주의 환상과 계시를 말하리라

고후12:2 내가 그리스도 안에 있는 한 사람을 아노니 그는 십사 년 전에 셋째 하늘에 이끌려 간 자라 (그가 몸 안에 있었는지 몸 밖에 있었는지 나는 모르거니와 하나님은 아시느니라)

고후12:3 내가 이런 사람을 아노니 (그가 몸 안에 있었는지 몸 밖에 있었는지 나는 모르거니와 하나님은 아시느니라)

고후12:4 그가 낙원으로 이끌려 가서 말로 표현할 수 없는 말을 들었으니 사람이 가히 이르지 못할 말이로다

고후12:5 내가 이런 사람을 위하여 자랑하겠으나 나를 위하여는 약한 것들 외에 자랑하지 아니하리라

고후12:6 내가 만일 자랑하고자 하여도 어리석은 자가 되지 아니할 것은 내가 참말을 함이라 그러나 누가 나를 보는 바와 내게 듣는 바에 지나치게 생각할까 두려워하여 그만두노라

고후12:7 여러 계시를 받은 것이 지극히 크므로 너무 자만하지 않게 하시려고 내 육체에 가시 곧 사탄의 사자를 주셨으니 이는 나를 쳐서 너무 자만하지 않게 하려 하심이라

고후12:8 이것이 내게서 떠나가게 하기 위하여 내가 세 번 주께 간구하였더니

고후12:9 나에게 이르시기를 내 은혜가 네게 족하도다 이는 내 능력이 약한 데서 온전하여짐이라 하신지라 그러므로 도리어 크게 기뻐함으로 나의 여러 약한 것들에 대하여 자랑하리니 이는 그리스도의 능력이 내게 머물게 하려 함이라

고후12:10 그러므로 내가 그리스도를 위하여 약한 것들과 능욕과 궁핍과 박해와 곤고를 기뻐하노니 이는 내가 약한 그 때에 강함이라

고후12:11 내가 어리석은 자가 되었으나 너희가 억지로 시킨 것이니 나는 너희에게 칭찬을 받아야 마땅하도다 내가 아무 것도 아니나 지극히 크다는 사도들보다 조금도 부족하지 아니하니라

고후12:12 사도의 표가 된 것은 내가 너희 가운데서 모든 참음과 표적과 기사와 능력을 행한 것이라

고후12:13 내 자신이 너희에게 폐를 끼치지 아니한 일밖에 다른 교회보다 부족하게 한 것이 무엇이 있느냐 너희는 나의 이 공평하지 못한 것을 용서하라

고후12:14 보라 내가 이제 세 번째 너희에게 가기를 준비하였으나 너희에게 폐를 끼치지 아니하리라 내가 구하는 것은 너희 재물이 아니요 오직 너희니라 어린 아이가 부모를 위하여 재물을 저축하는 것이 아니요 이에 부모가 어린 아이를 위하여 하느니라

고후12:15 내가 너희 영혼을 위하여 크게 기뻐하므로 재물을 사용하고 또 내 자신까지도 내어 주리니 너희를 더욱 사랑할수록 나는 사랑을 덜 받겠느냐

고후12:16 하여간 어떤 이의 말이 내가 너희에게 짐을 지우지는 아니하였을지라도 교활한 자가 되어 너희를 속임수로 취하였다 하니

고후12:17 내가 너희에게 보낸 자 중에 누구로 너희의 이득을 취하더냐

고후12:18 내가 디도를 권하고 함께 한 형제를 보내었으니 디도가 너희의 이득을 취하더냐 우리가 동일한 성령으로 행하지 아니하더냐 동일한 보조로 하지 아니하더냐

고후12:19 너희는 이 때까지 우리가 자기 변명을 하는 줄로 생각하는구나 우리는 그리스도 안에서 하나님 앞에 말하노라 사랑하는 자들아 이 모든 것은 너희의 덕을 세우기 위함이니라

고후12:20 내가 갈 때에 너희를 내가 원하는 것과 같이 보지 못하고 또 내가 너희에게 너희가 원하지 않는 것과 같이 보일까 두려워하며 또 다툼과 시기와 분냄과 당 짓는 것과 비방과 수군거림과 거만함과 혼란이 있을까 두려워하고

고후12:21 또 내가 다시 갈 때에 내 하나님이 나를 너희 앞에서 낮추실까 두려워하고 또 내가 전에 죄를 지은 여러 사람의 그 행한 바 더러움과 음란함과 호색함을 회개하지 아니함 때문에 슬퍼할까 두려워하노라

에스겔 26 장.

겔26:1 열한째 해 어느 달 초하루 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되

겔26:2 인자야 두로가 예루살렘에 관하여 이르기를 아하 만민의 문이 깨져서 내게로 돌아왔도다 그가 황폐하였으니 내가 충만함을 얻으리라 하였도다

겔26:3 그러므로 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 두로야 내가 너를 대적하여 바다가 그 파도를 굽이치게 함 같이 여러 민족들이 와서 너를 치게 하리니

겔26:4 그들이 두로의 성벽을 무너뜨리며 그 망대를 헐 것이요 나도 티끌을 그 위에서 쓸어 버려 맨 바위가 되게 하며

겔26:5 바다 가운데에 그물 치는 곳이 되게 하리니 내가 말하였음이라 주 여호와의 말씀이니라 그가 이방의 노략 거리가 될 것이요

겔26:6 들에 있는 그의 딸들은 칼에 죽으리니 그들이 나를 여호와인 줄을 알리라

겔26:7 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 내가 왕들 중의 왕 곧 바벨론의 느부갓네살 왕으로 하여금 북쪽에서 말과 병거와 기병과 군대와 백성의 큰 무리를 거느리고 와서 두로를 치게 할 때에

겔26:8 그가 들에 있는 너의 딸들을 칼로 죽이고 너를 치려고 사다리를 세우며 토성을 쌓으며 방패를 갖출 것이며

겔26:9 공성퇴를 가지고 네 성을 치며 도끼로 망대를 찍을 것이며

겔26:10 말이 많으므로 그 티끌이 너를 가릴 것이며 사람이 무너진 성 구멍으로 들어가는 것 같이 그가 네 성문으로 들어갈 때에 그 기병과 수레와 병거의 소리로 말미암아 네 성곽이 진동할 것이며

겔26:11 그가 그 말굽으로 네 모든 거리를 밟을 것이며 칼로 네 백성을 죽일 것이며 네 견고한 석상을 땅에 엎드러뜨릴 것이며

겔26:12 네 재물을 빼앗을 것이며 네가 무역한 것을 노략할 것이며 네 성을 헐 것이며 네가 기뻐하는 집을 무너뜨릴 것이며 또 네 돌들과 네 재목과 네 흙을 다 물 가운데에 던질 것이라

겔26:13 내가 네 노래 소리를 그치게 하며 네 수금 소리를 다시 들리지 않게 하고

겔26:14 너를 맨 바위가 되게 한즉 네가 그물 말리는 곳이 되고 다시는 건축되지 못하리니 나 여호와가 말하였음이니라 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

겔26:15 주 여호와께서 이같이 두로에 대하여 말씀하시되 네가 엎드러지는 소리에 모든 섬이 진동하지 아니하겠느냐 곧 너희 가운데에 상한 자가 부르짖으며 죽임을 당할 때에라

겔26:16 그 때에 바다의 모든 왕이 그 보좌에서 내려 조복을 벗으며 수놓은 옷을 버리고 떨림을 입듯 하고 땅에 앉아서 너로 말미암아 무시로 떨며 놀랄 것이며

겔26:17 그들이 너를 위하여 슬픈 노래를 불러 이르기를 항해자가 살았던 유명한 성읍이여 너와 너의 주민이 바다 가운데에 있어 견고하였도다 해변의 모든 주민을 두렵게 하였더니 어찌 그리 멸망하였는고

겔26:18 네가 무너지는 그날에 섬들이 진동할 것임이여 바다 가운데의 섬들이 네 결국을 보고 놀라리로다 하리라

겔26:19 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 내가 너를 주민이 없는 성읍과 같이 황폐한 성읍이 되게 하고 깊은 바다가 네 위에 오르게 하며 큰 물이 너를 덮게 할 때에

겔26:20 내가 너를 구덩이에 내려가는 자와 함께 내려가서 옛적 사람에게로 나아가게 하고 너를 그 구덩이에 내려간 자와 함께 땅 깊은 곳 예로부터 황폐한 곳에 살게 하리라 네가 다시는 사람이 거주하는 곳이 되지 못하리니 살아 있는 자의 땅에서 영광을 얻지 못하리라

겔26:21 내가 너를 패망하게 하여 다시 있지 못하게 하리니 사람이 비록 너를 찾으나 다시는 영원히 만나지 못하리라 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

시편 74 장.

시74:1 하나님이여 주께서 어찌하여 우리를 영원히 버리시나이까 어찌하여 주께서 기르시는 양을 향하여 진노의 연기를 뿜으시나이까

시74:2 옛적부터 얻으시고 속량하사 주의 기업의 지파로 삼으신 주의 회중을 기억하시며 주께서 계시던 시온 산도 생각하소서

시74:3 영구히 파멸된 곳을 향하여 주의 발을 옮겨 놓으소서 원수가 성소에서 모든 악을 행하였나이다

시74:4 주의 대적이 주의 회중 가운데에서 떠들며 자기들의 표적을 표적으로 삼았으니

시74:5 그들은 마치 토끼를 들어 삼림을 베는 사람 같으니이다

시74:6 이제 그들이 도끼와 철퇴로 성소의 모든 조각품을 쳐서 부수고

시74:7 주의 성소를 불사르며 주의 이름이 계신 곳을 더럽혀 땅에 엎었나이다

시74:8 그들이 마음속으로 이르기를 우리가 그들을 진멸하자 하고 이 땅에 있는 하나님의 모든 회당을 불살랐나이다

시74:9 우리의 표적은 보이지 아니하며 선지자도 더 이상 없으며 이런 일이 얼마나 오랠는지 우리 중에 아는 자도 없나이다

시74:10 하나님이여 대적이 언제까지 비방하겠으며 원수가 주의 이름을 영원히 능욕하리이까

시74:11 주께서 어찌하여 주의 손 곧 주의 오른손을 거두시나이까 주의 품에서 손을 빼내시어 그들을 멸하소서

시74:12 하나님은 예로부터 나의 왕이시라 사람에게 구원을 베푸셨나이다

시74:13 주께서 주의 능력으로 바다를 나누시고 물 가운데 용들의 머리를 깨뜨리셨으며

시74:14 리워야단의 머리를 부수시고 그것을 사막에 사는 자에게 음식물로 주셨으며

시74:15 주께서 바위를 쪼개어 큰 물을 내시며 주께서 늘 흐르는 강들을 마르게 하셨나이다

시74:16 낮도 주의 것이요 밤도 주의 것이라 주께서 빛과 해를 마련하셨으며

시74:17 주께서 땅의 경계를 정하시며 주께서 여름과 겨울을 만드셨나이다

시74:18 여호와여 이것을 기억하소서 원수가 주를 비방하며 우매한 백성이 주의 이름을 능욕하였나이다

시74:19 주의 멧비둘기의 생명을 들짐승에게 주지 마시며 주의 가난한 자의 목숨을 영원히 잊지 마소서

시74:20 그 언약을 눈여겨보소서 무릇 땅의 어두운 곳에 포악한 자의 처소가 가득하나이다

시74:21 학대받은 자가 부끄러이 돌아가게 하지 마시고 가난한 자와 궁핍한 자가 주의 이름을 찬송하게 하소서

시74:22 하나님이여 일어나 주의 원통함을 푸시고 우매한 자가 종일 주를 비방하는 것을 기억하소서

시74:23 주의 대적들의 소리를 잊지 마소서 일어나 주께 항거하는 자의 떠드는 소리가 항상 주께 상달되나이다

2 Samuel 19.

19:1 Joab was told, "The king is weeping and mourning for Absalom."

19:2 And for the whole army the victory that day was turned into mourning, because on that day the troops heard it said, "The king is grieving for his son."

19:3 The men stole into the city that day as men steal in who are ashamed when they flee from battle.

19:4 The king covered his face and cried aloud, "O my son Absalom! O Absalom, my son, my son!"

19:5 Then Joab went into the house to the king and said, "Today you have humiliated all your men, who have just saved your life and the lives of your sons and daughters and the lives of your wives and concubines.

19:6 You love those who hate you and hate those who love you. You have made it clear today that the commanders and their men mean nothing to you. I see that you would be pleased if Absalom were alive today and all of us were dead.

19:7 Now go out and encourage your men. I swear by the LORD that if you don't go out, not a man will be left with you by nightfall. This will be worse for you than all the calamities that have come upon you from your youth till now."

19:8 So the king got up and took his seat in the gateway. When the men were told, "The king is sitting in the gateway," they all came before him. Meanwhile, the Israelites had fled to their homes.

19:9 Throughout the tribes of Israel, the people were all arguing with each other, saying, "The king delivered us from the hand of our enemies; he is the one who rescued us from the hand of the Philistines. But now he has fled the country because of Absalom;

19:10 and Absalom, whom we anointed to rule over us, has died in battle. So why do you say nothing about bringing the king back?"

19:11 King David sent this message to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests: "Ask the elders of Judah, 'Why should you be the last to bring the king back to his palace, since what is being said throughout Israel has reached the king at his quarters?

19:12 You are my brothers, my own flesh and blood. So why should you be the last to bring back the king?'

19:13 And say to Amasa, 'Are you not my own flesh and blood? May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if from now on you are not the commander of my army in place of Joab.'"

19:14 He won over the hearts of all the men of Judah as though they were one man. They sent word to the king, "Return, you and all your men."

19:15 Then the king returned and went as far as the Jordan. Now the men of Judah had come to Gilgal to go out and meet the king and bring him across the Jordan.

19:16 Shimei son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim, hurried down with the men of Judah to meet King David.

19:17 With him were a thousand Benjamites, along with Ziba, the steward of Saul's household, and his fifteen sons and twenty servants. They rushed to the Jordan, where the king was.

19:18 They crossed at the ford to take the king's household over and to do whatever he wished. When Shimei son of Gera crossed the Jordan, he fell prostrate before the king

19:19 and said to him, "May my lord not hold me guilty. Do not remember how your servant did wrong on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. May the king put it out of his mind.

19:20 For I your servant know that I have sinned, but today I have come here as the first of the whole house of Joseph to come down and meet my lord the king."

19:21 Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said, "Shouldn't Shimei be put to death for this? He cursed the LORD'S anointed."

19:22 David replied, "What do you and I have in common, you sons of Zeruiah? This day you have become my adversaries! Should anyone be put to death in Israel today? Do I not know that today I am king over Israel?"

19:23 So the king said to Shimei, "You shall not die." And the king promised him on oath.

19:24 Mephibosheth, Saul's grandson, also went down to meet the king. He had not taken care of his feet or trimmed his mustache or washed his clothes from the day the king left until the day he returned safely.

19:25 When he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, the king asked him, "Why didn't you go with me, Mephibosheth?"

19:26 He said, "My lord the king, since I your servant am lame, I said, 'I will have my donkey saddled and will ride on it, so I can go with the king.' But Ziba my servant betrayed me.

19:27 And he has slandered your servant to my lord the king. My lord the king is like an angel of God; so do whatever pleases you.

19:28 All my grandfather's descendants deserved nothing but death from my lord the king, but you gave your servant a place among those who sat at your table. So what right do I have to make any more appeals to the king?"

19:29 The king said to him, "Why say more? I order you and Ziba to divide the fields."

19:30 Mephibosheth said to the king, "Let him take everything, now that my lord the king has arrived home safely."

19:31 Barzillai the Gileadite also came down from Rogelim to cross the Jordan with the king and to send him on his way from there.

19:32 Now Barzillai was a very old man, eighty years of age. He had provided for the king during his stay in Mahanaim, for he was a very wealthy man.

19:33 The king said to Barzillai, "Cross over with me and stay with me in Jerusalem, and I will provide for you."

19:34 But Barzillai answered the king, "How many more years will I live, that I should go up to Jerusalem with the king?

19:35 I am now eighty years old. Can I tell the difference between what is good and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats and drinks? Can I still hear the voices of men and women singers? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?

19:36 Your servant will cross over the Jordan with the king for a short distance, but why should the king reward me in this way?

19:37 Let your servant return, that I may die in my own town near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Kimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king. Do for him whatever pleases you."

19:38 The king said, "Kimham shall cross over with me, and I will do for him whatever pleases you. And anything you desire from me I will do for you."

19:39 So all the people crossed the Jordan, and then the king crossed over. The king kissed Barzillai and gave him his blessing, and Barzillai returned to his home.

19:40 When the king crossed over to Gilgal, Kimham crossed with him. All the troops of Judah and half the troops of Israel had taken the king over.

19:41 Soon all the men of Israel were coming to the king and saying to him, "Why did our brothers, the men of Judah, steal the king away and bring him and his household across the Jordan, together with all his men?"

19:42 All the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, "We did this because the king is closely related to us. Why are you angry about it? Have we eaten any of the king's provisions? Have we taken anything for ourselves?"

19:43 Then the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, "We have ten shares in the king; and besides, we have a greater claim on David than you have. So why do you treat us with contempt? Were we not the first to speak of bringing back our king?" But the men of Judah responded even more harshly than the men of Israel.

2 Corinthians 12.

12:1 I must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord.

12:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven. Whether it was in the body or out of the body I do not know--God knows.

12:3 And I know that this man--whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, but God knows--

12:4 was caught up to paradise. He heard inexpressible things, things that man is not permitted to tell.

12:5 I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself, except about my weaknesses.

12:6 Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say.

12:7 To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me.

12:8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.

12:9 But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

12:10 That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

12:11 I have made a fool of myself, but you drove me to it. I ought to have been commended by you, for I am not in the least inferior to the "super-apostles," even though I am nothing.

12:12 The things that mark an apostle--signs, wonders and miracles--were done among you with great perseverance.

12:13 How were you inferior to the other churches, except that I was never a burden to you? Forgive me this wrong!

12:14 Now I am ready to visit you for the third time, and I will not be a burden to you, because what I want is not your possessions but you. After all, children should not have to save up for their parents, but parents for their children.

12:15 So I will very gladly spend for you everything I have and expend myself as well. If I love you more, will you love me less?

12:16 Be that as it may, I have not been a burden to you. Yet, crafty fellow that I am, I caught you by trickery!

12:17 Did I exploit you through any of the men I sent you?

12:18 I urged Titus to go to you and I sent our brother with him. Titus did not exploit you, did he? Did we not act in the same spirit and follow the same course?

12:19 Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you? We have been speaking in the sight of God as those in Christ; and everything we do, dear friends, is for your strengthening.

12:20 For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder.

12:21 I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved over many who have sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery in which they have indulged.

Ezekiel 26.

26:1 In the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:

26:2 "Son of man, because Tyre has said of Jerusalem, 'Aha! The gate to the nations is broken, and its doors have swung open to me; now that she lies in ruins I will prosper,'

26:3 therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am against you, O Tyre, and I will bring many nations against you, like the sea casting up its waves.

26:4 They will destroy the walls of Tyre and pull down her towers; I will scrape away her rubble and make her a bare rock.

26:5 Out in the sea she will become a place to spread fishnets, for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign LORD. She will become plunder for the nations,

26:6 and her settlements on the mainland will be ravaged by the sword. Then they will know that I am the LORD.

26:7 "For this is what the Sovereign LORD says: From the north I am going to bring against Tyre Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, king of kings, with horses and chariots, with horsemen and a great army.

26:8 He will ravage your settlements on the mainland with the sword; he will set up siege works against you, build a ramp up to your walls and raise his shields against you.

26:9 He will direct the blows of his battering rams against your walls and demolish your towers with his weapons.

26:10 His horses will be so many that they will cover you with dust. Your walls will tremble at the noise of the war horses, wagons and chariots when he enters your gates as men enter a city whose walls have been broken through.

26:11 The hoofs of his horses will trample all your streets; he will kill your people with the sword, and your strong pillars will fall to the ground.

26:12 They will plunder your wealth and loot your merchandise; they will break down your walls and demolish your fine houses and throw your stones, timber and rubble into the sea.

26:13 I will put an end to your noisy songs, and the music of your harps will be heard no more.

26:14 I will make you a bare rock, and you will become a place to spread fishnets. You will never be rebuilt, for I the LORD have spoken, declares the Sovereign LORD.

26:15 "This is what the Sovereign LORD says to Tyre: Will not the coastlands tremble at the sound of your fall, when the wounded groan and the slaughter takes place in you?

26:16 Then all the princes of the coast will step down from their thrones and lay aside their robes and take off their embroidered garments. Clothed with terror, they will sit on the ground, trembling every moment, appalled at you.

26:17 Then they will take up a lament concerning you and say to you: "'How you are destroyed, O city of renown, peopled by men of the sea! You were a power on the seas, you and your citizens; you put your terror on all who lived there.

26:18 Now the coastlands tremble on the day of your fall; the islands in the sea are terrified at your collapse.'

26:19 "This is what the Sovereign LORD says: When I make you a desolate city, like cities no longer inhabited, and when I bring the ocean depths over you and its vast waters cover you,

26:20 then I will bring you down with those who go down to the pit, to the people of long ago. I will make you dwell in the earth below, as in ancient ruins, with those who go down to the pit, and you will not return or take your place in the land of the living.

26:21 I will bring you to a horrible end and you will be no more. You will be sought, but you will never again be found, declares the Sovereign LORD."

Psalms 74.

74:1 Why have you rejected us forever, O God? Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture?

74:2 Remember the people you purchased of old, the tribe of your inheritance, whom you redeemed--Mount Zion, where you dwelt.

74:3 Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins, all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary.

74:4 Your foes roared in the place where you met with us; they set up their standards as signs.

74:5 They behaved like men wielding axes to cut through a thicket of trees.

74:6 They smashed all the carved paneling with their axes and hatchets.

74:7 They burned your sanctuary to the ground; they defiled the dwelling place of your Name.

74:8 They said in their hearts, "We will crush them completely!" They burned every place where God was worshiped in the land.

74:9 We are given no miraculous signs; no prophets are left, and none of us knows how long this will be.

74:10 How long will the enemy mock you, O God? Will the foe revile your name forever?

74:11 Why do you hold back your hand, your right hand? Take it from the folds of your garment and destroy them!

74:12 But you, O God, are my king from of old; you bring salvation upon the earth.

74:13 It was you who split open the sea by your power; you broke the heads of the monster in the waters.

74:14 It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave him as food to the creatures of the desert.

74:15 It was you who opened up springs and streams; you dried up the ever flowing rivers.

74:16 The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon.

74:17 It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.

74:18 Remember how the enemy has mocked you, O LORD, how foolish people have reviled your name.

74:19 Do not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts; do not forget the lives of your afflicted people forever.

74:20 Have regard for your covenant, because haunts of violence fill the dark places of the land.

74:21 Do not let the oppressed retreat in disgrace; may the poor and needy praise your name.

74:22 Rise up, O God, and defend your cause; remember how fools mock you all day long.

74:23 Do not ignore the clamor of your adversaries, the uproar of your enemies, which rises continually.
