사무엘하 14 장.

삼하14:1 스루야의 아들 요압이 왕의 마음이 압살롬에게로 향하는 줄 알고

삼하14:2 드고아에 사람을 보내 거기서 지혜로운 여인 하나를 데려다가 그에게 이르되 청하건대 너는 상주가 된 것처럼 상복을 입고 기름을 바르지 말고 죽은 사람을 위하여 오래 슬퍼하는 여인 같이 하고

삼하14:3 왕께 들어가서 그에게 이러이러하게 말하라고 요압이 그의 입에 할 말을 넣어 주니라

삼하14:4 드고아 여인이 왕께 아뢸 때에 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드려 이르되 왕이여 도우소서 하니

삼하14:5 왕이 그에게 이르되 무슨 일이냐 하니라 대답하되 나는 진정으로 과부니이다 남편은 죽고

삼하14:6 이 여종에게 아들 둘이 있더니 그들이 들에서 싸우나 그들을 말리는 사람이 아무도 없으므로 한 아이가 다른 아이를 쳐죽인지라

삼하14:7 온 족속이 일어나서 당신의 여종 나를 핍박하여 말하기를 그의 동생을 쳐죽인 자를 내놓으라 우리가 그의 동생 죽인 죄를 갚아 그를 죽여 상속자 될 것까지 끊겠노라 하오니 그러한즉 그들이 내게 남아 있는 숯불을 꺼서 내 남편의 이름과 씨를 세상에 남겨두지 아니하겠다 하니

삼하14:8 왕이 여인에게 이르되 네 집으로 가라 내가 너를 위하여 명령을 내리리라 하는지라

삼하14:9 드고아 여인이 왕께 아뢰되 내 주 왕이여 그 죄는 나와 내 아버지의 집으로 돌릴 것이니 왕과 왕위는 허물이 없으리이다

삼하14:10 왕이 이르되 누구든지 네게 말하는 자를 내게로 데려오라 그가 다시는 너를 건드리지도 못하리라 하니라

삼하14:11 여인이 이르되 청하건대 왕은 왕의 하나님 여호와를 기억하사 원수 갚는 자가 더 죽이지 못하게 하옵소서 내 아들을 죽일까 두렵나이다 하니 왕이 이르되 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 네 아들의 머리카락 하나도 땅에 떨어지지 아니하리라 하니라

삼하14:12 여인이 이르되 청하건대 당신의 여종을 용납하여 한 말씀을 내 주 왕께 여쭙게 하옵소서 하니 그가 이르되 말하라 하니라

삼하14:13 여인이 이르되 그러면 어찌하여 왕께서 하나님의 백성에게 대하여 이같은 생각을 하셨나이까 이 말씀을 하심으로 왕께서 죄 있는 사람 같이 되심은 그 내쫓긴 자를 왕께서 집으로 돌아오게 하지 아니하심이니이다

삼하14:14 우리는 필경 죽으리니 땅에 쏟아진 물을 다시 담지 못함 같을 것이오나 하나님은 생명을 빼앗지 아니하시고 방책을 베푸사 내쫓긴 자가 하나님께 버린 자가 되지 아니하게 하시나이다

삼하14:15 이제 내가 와서 내 주 왕께 이 말씀을 여쭙는 것은 백성들이 나를 두렵게 하므로 당신의 여종이 스스로 말하기를 내가 왕께 여쭈오면 혹시 종이 청하는 것을 왕께서 시행하실 것이라

삼하14:16 왕께서 들으시고 나와 내 아들을 함께 하나님의 기업에서 끊을 자의 손으로부터 주의 종을 구원하시리라 함이니이다

삼하14:17 당신의 여종이 또 수수로 말하기를 내 주 왕의 말씀이 나의 위로가 되기를 원한다 하였사오니 이는 내 주 왕께서 하나님의 사자 같이 선과 악을 분간하심이니이다 원하건대 왕의 하나님 여호와께서 왕과 같이 계시옵소서

삼하14:18 왕이 그 여인에게 대답하여 이르되 바라노니 내가 네게 묻는 것을 내게 숨기지 말라 여인이 이르되 내 주 왕은 말씀하옵소서

삼하14:19 왕이 이르되 이 모든 일에 요압이 너와 함께 하였느냐 하니 여인이 대답하여 이르되 내 주 왕의 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하옵나니 내 주 왕의 말씀을 좌로나 우로나 옮길 자가 없으리이다 왕의 종 요압이 내게 명령하였고 그가 이 모든 말을 왕의 여종의 입에 넣어 주었사오니

삼하14:20 이는 왕의 종 요압이 이 일의 형편을 바꾸려 하여 이렇게 함이니이다 내 주 왕의 지혜는 하나님의 사자의 지혜와 같아서 땅에 있는 일을 다 아시나이다 하니라

삼하14:21 왕이 요압에게 이르되 내가 이 일을 허락하였으니 가서 청년 압살롬을 데려오라 하니라

삼하14:22 요압이 땅에 엎드려 절하고 왕을 위하여 복을 빌고 요압이 이르되 내 주 왕이여 종의 구함을 왕이 허락하시니 종이 왕 앞에서 은혜 입은 줄을 오늘 아나이다 하고

삼하14:23 요압이 일어나 그술로 가서 압살롬을 데리고 예루살렘으로 오니

삼하14:24 왕이 이르되 그를 그의 집으로 물러가게 하여 내 얼굴을 볼 수 없게 하라 하매 압살롬이 자기 집으로 돌아가고 왕의 얼굴을 보지 못하니라

삼하14:25 온 이스라엘 가운데에서 압살롬 같이 아름다움으로 크게 칭찬 받는 자가 없었으니 그는 발바닥부터 정수리까지 흠이 없음이라

삼하14:26 그의 머리털이 무거우므로 연말마다 깎았으며 그의 머리털을 깎을 때에 그것을 달아본즉 그의 머리털이 왕의 저울로 이백 세겔이었더라

삼하14:27 압살롬이 아들 셋과 딸 하나를 낳았는데 딸의 이름은 다말이라 그는 얼굴이 아름다운 여자더라

삼하14:28 압살롬이 이태 동안 예루살렘에 있으되 왕의 얼굴을 보지 못하였으므로

삼하14:29 압살롬이 요압을 왕께 보내려 하여 압살롬이 요압에게 사람을 보내 부르되 그에게 오지 아니하고 또 다시 그에게 보내되 오지 아니하는지라

삼하14:30 압살롬이 자기의 종들에게 이르되 보라 요압의 밭이 내 밭 근처에 있고 거기 보리가 있으니 가서 불을 지르라 하니라 압살롬의 종들이 그 밭에 불을 질렀더니

삼하14:31 요압이 일어나 압살롬의 집으로 가서 그에게 이르되 어찌하여 네 종들이 내 밭에 불을 질렀느냐 하니

삼하14:32 압살롬이 요압에게 대답하되 내가 일찍이 사람을 네게 보내 너를 이리로 오라고 청한 것은 내가 너를 왕께 보내 아뢰게 하기를 어찌하여 내가 그술에서 돌아오게 되었나이까 이 때까지 거기에 있는 것이 내게 나았으리이다 하려 함이로라 이제는 네가 나로 하여금 왕의 얼굴을 볼 수 있게 하라 내가 만일 죄가 있으면 왕이 나를 죽이시는 것이 옳으니라 하는지라

삼하14:33 요압이 왕께 나아가서 그에게 아뢰매 왕이 압살롬을 부르니 그가 왕께 나아가 그 앞에서 얼굴을 땅에 대어 그에게 절하매 왕이 압살롬과 입을 맞추니라

고린도후서 7 장.

고후7:1 그런즉 사랑하는 자들아 이 약속을 가진 우리는 하나님을 두려워하는 가운데서 거룩함을 온전히 이루어 육과 영의 온갖 더러운 것에서 자신을 깨끗하게 하자

고후7:2 마음으로 우리를 영접하라 우리가 아무에게도 불의를 행하지 않고 아무에게도 해롭게 하지 않고 아무에게도 속여 빼앗은 일이 없노라

고후7:3 내가 이 말을 하는 것은 너희를 정죄하려고 하는 것이 아니라 내가 이전에 말하였거니와 너희가 우리 마음에 있어 함께 죽고 함께 살게 하고자 함이라

고후7:4 내가 너희를 향하여 담대한 것도 많고 너희를 위하여 자랑하는 것도 많으니 내가 우리의 모든 환난 가운데서도 위로가 가득하고 기쁨이 넘치는도다

고후7:5 우리가 마게도냐에 이르렀을 때에도 우리 육체가 편하지 못하였고 사방으로 환난을 당하여 밖으로는 다툼이요 안으로는 두려움이었노라

고후7:6 그러나 낙심한 자들을 위로하시는 하나님이 디도가 옴으로 우리를 위로하셨으니

고후7:7 그가 온 것뿐 아니요 오직 그가 너희에게서 받은 그 위로로 위로하고 너희의 사모함과 애통함과 나를 위하여 열심 있는 것을 우리에게 보고함으로 나를 더욱 기쁘게 하였느니라

고후7:8 그러므로 내가 편지로 너희를 근심하게 한 것을 후회하였으나 지금은 후회하지 아니함은 그 편지가 너희로 잠시만 근심하게 한 줄을 앎이라

고후7:9 내가 지금 기뻐함은 너희로 근심하게 한 까닭이 아니요 도리어 너희가 근심함으로 회개함에 이른 까닭이라 너희가 하나님의 뜻대로 근심하게 된 것은 우리에게서 아무 해도 받지 않게 하려 함이라

고후7:10 하나님의 뜻대로 하는 근심은 후회할 것이 없는 구원에 이르게 하는 회개를 이루는 것이요 세상 근심은 사망을 이루는 것이니라

고후7:11 보라 하나님의 뜻대로 하게 된 이 근심이 너희로 얼마나 간절하게 하며 얼마나 변증하게 하며 얼마나 분하게 하며 얼마나 두렵게 하며 얼마나 사모하게 하며 얼마나 열심 있게 하며 얼마나 벌하게 하였는가 너희가 그 일에 대하여 일체 너희 자신의 깨끗함을 나타내었느니라

고후7:12 그런즉 내가 너희에게 쓴 것은 그 불의를 행한 자를 위한 것도 아니요 그 불의를 당한 자를 위한 것도 아니요 오직 우리를 위한 너희의 간절함이 하나님 앞에서 너희에게 나타나게 하려 함이로라

고후7:13 이로 인하여 우리가 위로를 받았고 우리의 받은 위로 위에 디도의 기쁨으로 우리가 더욱 많이 기뻐함은 그의 마음이 너희 무리로 말미암아 안심함을 얻었음이라

고후7:14 내가 그에게 너희를 위하여 자랑한 것이 있더라도 부끄럽지 아니하니 우리가 너희에게 이른 말이 다 참된 것 같이 디도 앞에서 우리가 자랑한 것도 참되게 되었도다

고후7:15 그가 너희 모든 사람들이 두려움과 떪으로 자기를 영접하여 순종한 것을 생각하고 너희를 향하여 그의 심정이 더욱 깊었으니

고후7:16 내가 범사에 너희를 신뢰하게 된 것을 기뻐하노라

에스겔 21 장.

겔21:1 또 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되

겔21:2 인자야 너는 얼굴을 예루살렘으로 향하며 성소를 향하여 소리내어 이스라엘 땅에게 예언하라

겔21:3 이스라엘 땅에게 이르기를 여호와의 말씀에 내가 너를 대적하여 내 칼을 칼집에서 빼어 의인과 악인을 네게서 끊을지라

겔21:4 내가 의인과 악인을 네게서 끊을 터이므로 내 칼을 칼집에서 빼어 모든 육체를 남에서 북까지 치리니

겔21:5 모든 육체는 나 여호와가 내 칼을 칼집에서 빼낸 줄을 알지라 칼이 다시 꽂히지 아니하리라 하셨다 하라

겔21:6 인자야 탄식하되 너는 허리가 끊어지듯 탄식하라 그들의 목전에서 슬피 탄식하라

겔21:7 그들이 네게 묻기를 네가 어찌 하여 탄식하느냐 하거든 대답하기를 재앙이 다가온다는 소문 때문이니 각 마음이 녹으며 모든 손이 약하여지며 각 영이 쇠하며 모든 무릎이 물과 같이 약해지리라 보라 재앙이 오나니 반드시 이루어지리라 주 여호와 말씀이니라 하라

겔21:8 여호와의 말씀이 또 내게 임하여 이르시되

겔21:9 인자야 너는 예언하여 여호와의 말씀을 이같이 말하라 칼이여 칼이여 날카롭고도 빛나도다

겔21:10 그 칼이 날카로움은 죽임을 위함이요 빛남은 번개 같이 되기 위함이니 우리가 즐거워하겠느냐 내 아들의 규가 모든 나무를 업신여기는도다

겔21:11 그 칼을 손에 잡아 쓸 만하도록 빛나게 하되 죽이는 자의 손에 넘기기 위하여 날카롭고도 빛나게 하였도다 하셨다 하라

겔21:12 인자야 너는 부르짖어 슬피 울지어다 이것이 내 백성에게 임하며 이스라엘 모든 고관에게 임함이로다 그들과 내 백성이 함께 칼에 넘긴 바 되었으니 너는 네 넓적다리를 칠지어다

겔21:13 이것이 시험이라 만일 업신여기는 규가 없어지면 어찌할까 주 여호와의 말씀이니라

겔21:14 그러므로 인자야 너는 예언하며 손뼉을 쳐서 칼로 두세 번 거듭 쓰이게 하라 이 칼은 죽이는 칼이라 사람들을 둘러싸고 죽이는 큰 칼이로다

겔21:15 내가 그들이 낙담하여 많이 엎드러지게 하려고 그 모든 성문을 향하여 번쩍번쩍하는 칼을 세워 놓았도다 오호라 그 팔이 번개같고 죽이기 위하여 날카로웠도다

겔21:16 칼아 모이라 오른쪽을 치라 대열을 맞추라 왼쪽을 치라 향한 대로 가라

겔21:17 나도 내 손뼉을 치며 내 분노를 다 풀리로다 나 여호와가 말하였노라

겔21:18 여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되

겔21:19 인자야 너는 바벨론 왕의 칼이 올 두 길을 한 땅에서 나오도록 그리되 곧 성으로 들어가는 길 어귀에다가 길이 나뉘는 지시표를 하여

겔21:20 칼이 암몬 족속의 랍바에 이르는 길과 유다의 견고한 성 예루살렘에 이르는 길을 그리라

겔21:21 바벨론 왕이 갈랫길 곧 두 길 어귀에 서서 점을 치되 화살들을 흔들어 우상에게 묻고 희생제물의 간을 살펴서

겔21:22 오른손에 예루살렘으로 갈 점괘를 얻었으므로 공성퇴를 설치하며 입을 벌리고 죽이며 소리를 높여 외치며 성문을 향하여 공성퇴를 설치하고 토성을 쌓고 사다리를 세우게 되었나니

겔21:23 전에 그들에게 맹약한 자들은 그것을 거짓 점괘로 여길 것이나 바벨론 왕은 그 죄악을 기억하고 그 무리를 잡으리라

겔21:24 그러므로 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 너희의 악이 기억을 되살리며 너희의 허물이 드러나며 너희 모든 행위의 죄가 나타났도다 너희가 기억한 바 되었은즉 그 손에 잡히리라

겔21:25 너 극악하여 중상을 당할 이스라엘 왕아 네 날이 이르렀나니 곧 죄악의 마지막 때이니라

겔21:26 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하셨느니라 관을 제거하며 왕관을 벗길지라 그대로 두지 못하리니 낮은 자를 높이고 높은 자를 낮출 것이니라

겔21:27 내가 엎드러뜨리고 엎드러뜨리고 엎드러뜨리려니와 이것도 다시 있지 못하리라 마땅히 얻을 자가 이르면 그에게 주리라

겔21:28 인자야 너는 주 여호와께서 암몬 족속과 그의 능욕에 대하여 이같이 말씀하셨다고 예언하라 너는 이르기를 칼이 뽑히도다 칼이 뽑히도다 죽이며 멸절하며 번개 같이 되기 위하여 빛났도다

겔21:29 네게 대하여 허무한 것을 보며 네게 대하여 거짓 복술을 하는 자가 너를 중상 당한 악인의 목 위에 두리니 이는 그의 날 곧 죄악의 마지막 때가 이름이로다

겔21:30 그러나 칼을 그 칼집에 묶을지어다 네가 지음을 받은 곳에서, 네가 출생한 땅에서 내가 너를 심판하리로다

겔21:31 내가 내 분노를 네게 쏟으며 내 진노의 불을 네게 내뿜고 너를 짐승 같은 자 곧 멸하기에 익숙한 자의 손에 넘기리로다

겔21:32 네가 불에 섶과 같이 될 것이며 네 피가 나라 가운데에 있을 것이며 네가 다시 기억되지 못할 것이니 나 여호와가 말하였음이라 하라

시편 68 장.

시68:1 하나님이 일어나시니 원수들은 흩어지며 주를 미워하는 자들은 주 앞에서 도망하리이다

시68:2 연기가 불려 가듯이 그들을 몰아 내소서 불 앞에서 밀이 녹음 같이 악인이 하나님 앞에서 망하게 하소서

시68:3 의인은 기뻐하여 하나님 앞에서 뛰놀며 기뻐하고 즐거워할지어다

시68:4 하나님께 노래하며 그의 이름을 찬양하라 하늘을 타고 광야에 행하시던 이를 위하여 대로를 수축하라 그의 이름은 여호와이시니 그의 앞에서 뛰놀지어다

시68:5 그의 거룩한 처소에 계신 하나님은 고아의 아버지시며 과부의 재판장이시라

시68:6 하나님이 고독한 자들은 가족과 함께 살게 하시며 갇힌 자들은 이끌어 내사 형통하게 하시느니라 오직 거역하는 자들의 거처는 메마른 땅이로다

시68:7 하나님이여 주의 백성 앞에서 앞서 나가사 광야에서 행진하셨을 때에 (셀라)

시68:8 땅이 진동하며 하늘이 하나님 앞에서 떨어지며 저 시내 산도 하나님 곧 이스라엘의 하나님 앞에서 진동하였나이다

시68:9 하나님이여 주께서 흡족한 비를 보내사 주의 기업이 곤핍할 때에 주께서 그것을 견고하게 하셨고

시68:10 주의 회중을 그 가운데에 살게 하셨나이다 하나님이여 주께서 가난한 자를 위하여 주의 은택을 준비하셨나이다

시68:11 주께서 말씀을 주시니 소식을 공포하는 여자들은 큰 무리라

시68:12 여러 군대의 왕들이 도망하고 도망하니 집에 있던 여자들도 탈취물을 나누도다

시68:13 너희가 양 우리에 누울 때에는 그 날개를 은으로 입히고 그 깃을 황금으로 입힌 비둘기 같도다

시68:14 전능하신 이가 왕들을 그 중에서 흩으실 때에는 살몬에 눈이 날림 같도다

시68:15 바산의 산은 하나님의 산임이여 바산의 산은 높은 산이로다

시68:16 너희 높은 산들아 어찌하여 하나님이 계시려 하는 산을 시기하여 보느냐 진실로 여호와께서 이 산에 영원히 계시리로다

시68:17 하나님의 병거는 천천이요 만만이라 주께서 그 중에 계심이 시내 산 성소에 계심 같도다

시68:18 주께서 높은 곳으로 오르시며 사로잡은 자들을 취하시고 선물들을 사람들에게서 받으시며 반역자들로부터도 받으시니 여호와 하나님이 그들과 함께 계시기 때문이로다

시68:19 날마다 우리 짐을 지시는 주 곧 우리의 구원이신 하나님을 찬송할지로다 (셀라)

시68:20 하나님은 우리에게 구원의 하나님이시라 사망에서 벗어남은 주 여호와로 말미암거니와

시68:21 그의 원수들의 머리 곧 죄를 짓고 다니는 자의 정수리는 하나님이 쳐서 깨뜨리시리로다

시68:22 주께서 말씀하시기를 내가 그들을 바산에서 돌아오게 하며 바다 깊은 곳에서 도로 나오게 하고

시68:23 네가 그들을 심히 치고 그들의 피에 네 발을 잠그게 하며 네 집의 개의 혀로 네 원수들에게서 제 분깃을 얻게 하리라 하시도다

시68:24 하나님이여 그들이 주께서 행차하심을 보았으니 곧 나의 하나님, 나의 왕이 성소로 행차하시는 것이라

시68:25 소고 치는 처녀들 중에서 노래 부르는 자들은 앞서고 악기를 연주하는 자들은 뒤따르나이다

시68:26 이스라엘의 근원에서 나온 너희여 대회 중에 하나님 곧 주를 송축할지어다

시68:27 거기에는 그들을 주관하는 작은 베냐민과 유다의 고관과 그들의 무리와 스불론의 고관과 납달리의 고관이 있도다

시68:28 네 하나님이 너의 힘을 명령하셨도다 하나님이여 우리를 위하여 행하신 것을 견고하게 하소서

시68:29 예루살렘에 있는 주의 전을 위하여 왕들이 주께 예물을 드리리이다

시68:30 갈밭의 들짐승과 수소의 무리와 만민의 송아지를 꾸짖으시고 은 조각을 발 아래에 밟으소서 그가 전쟁을 즐기는 백성을 흩으셨도다

시68:31 고관들은 애굽에서 나오고 구스 인은 하나님을 향하여 그 손을 신속히 들리로다

시68:32 땅의 왕국들아 하나님께 노래하고 주께 찬송할지어다 (셀라)

시68:33 옛적 하늘들의 하늘을 타신 자에게 찬송하라 주께서 그 소리를 내시니 웅장한 소리로다

시68:34 너희는 하나님께 능력을 돌릴지어다 그의 위엄이 이스라엘 위에 있고 그의 능력이 구름 속에 있도다

시68:35 하나님이여 위엄을 성소에서 나타내시나이다 이스라엘의 하나님은 그의 백성에게 힘과 능력을 주시나니 하나님을 찬송할지어다

2 Samuel 14.

14:1 Joab son of Zeruiah knew that the king's heart longed for Absalom.

14:2 So Joab sent someone to Tekoa and had a wise woman brought from there. He said to her, "Pretend you are in mourning. Dress in mourning clothes, and don't use any cosmetic lotions. Act like a woman who has spent many days grieving for the dead.

14:3 Then go to the king and speak these words to him." And Joab put the words in her mouth.

14:4 When the woman from Tekoa went to the king, she fell with her face to the ground to pay him honor, and she said, "Help me, O king!"

14:5 The king asked her, "What is troubling you?" She said, "I am indeed a widow; my husband is dead.

14:6 I your servant had two sons. They got into a fight with each other in the field, and no one was there to separate them. One struck the other and killed him.

14:7 Now the whole clan has risen up against your servant; they say, 'Hand over the one who struck his brother down, so that we may put him to death for the life of his brother whom he killed; then we will get rid of the heir as well.' They would put out the only burning coal I have left, leaving my husband neither name nor descendant on the face of the earth."

14:8 The king said to the woman, "Go home, and I will issue an order in your behalf."

14:9 But the woman from Tekoa said to him, "My lord the king, let the blame rest on me and on my father's family, and let the king and his throne be without guilt."

14:10 The king replied, "If anyone says anything to you, bring him to me, and he will not bother you again."

14:11 She said, "Then let the king invoke the LORD his God to prevent the avenger of blood from adding to the destruction, so that my son will not be destroyed." "As surely as the LORD lives," he said, "not one hair of your son's head will fall to the ground."

14:12 Then the woman said, "Let your servant speak a word to my lord the king." "Speak," he replied.

14:13 The woman said, "Why then have you devised a thing like this against the people of God? When the king says this, does he not convict himself, for the king has not brought back his banished son?

14:14 Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die. But God does not take away life; instead, he devises ways so that a banished person may not remain estranged from him.

14:15 "And now I have come to say this to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid. Your servant thought, 'I will speak to the king; perhaps he will do what his servant asks.

14:16 Perhaps the king will agree to deliver his servant from the hand of the man who is trying to cut off both me and my son from the inheritance God gave us.'

14:17 "And now your servant says, 'May the word of my lord the king bring me rest, for my lord the king is like an angel of God in discerning good and evil. May the LORD your God be with you.'"

14:18 Then the king said to the woman, "Do not keep from me the answer to what I am going to ask you." "Let my lord the king speak," the woman said.

14:19 The king asked, "Isn't the hand of Joab with you in all this?" The woman answered, "As surely as you live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything my lord the king says. Yes, it was your servant Joab who instructed me to do this and who put all these words into the mouth of your servant.

14:20 Your servant Joab did this to change the present situation. My lord has wisdom like that of an angel of God--he knows everything that happens in the land."

14:21 The king said to Joab, "Very well, I will do it. Go, bring back the young man Absalom."

14:22 Joab fell with his face to the ground to pay him honor, and he blessed the king. Joab said, "Today your servant knows that he has found favor in your eyes, my lord the king, because the king has granted his servant's request."

14:23 Then Joab went to Geshur and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem.

14:24 But the king said, "He must go to his own house; he must not see my face." So Absalom went to his own house and did not see the face of the king.

14:25 In all Israel there was not a man so highly praised for his handsome appearance as Absalom. From the top of his head to the sole of his foot there was no blemish in him.

14:26 Whenever he cut the hair of his head--he used to cut his hair from time to time when it became too heavy for him--he would weigh it, and its weight was two hundred shekels by the royal standard.

14:27 Three sons and a daughter were born to Absalom. The daughter's name was Tamar, and she became a beautiful woman.

14:28 Absalom lived two years in Jerusalem without seeing the king's face.

14:29 Then Absalom sent for Joab in order to send him to the king, but Joab refused to come to him. So he sent a second time, but he refused to come.

14:30 Then he said to his servants, "Look, Joab's field is next to mine, and he has barley there. Go and set it on fire." So Absalom's servants set the field on fire.

14:31 Then Joab did go to Absalom's house and he said to him, "Why have your servants set my field on fire?"

14:32 Absalom said to Joab, "Look, I sent word to you and said, 'Come here so I can send you to the king to ask, "Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there!" 'Now then, I want to see the king's face, and if I am guilty of anything, let him put me to death."

14:33 So Joab went to the king and told him this. Then the king summoned Absalom, and he came in and bowed down with his face to the ground before the king. And the king kissed Absalom.

2 Corinthians 7.

7:1 Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.

7:2 Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one.

7:3 I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts that we would live or die with you.

7:4 I have great confidence in you; I take great pride in you. I am greatly encouraged; in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.

7:5 For when we came into Macedonia, this body of ours had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn--conflicts on the outside, fears within.

7:6 But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus,

7:7 and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.

7:8 Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it--I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while--

7:9 yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us.

7:10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.

7:11 See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

7:12 So even though I wrote to you, it was not on account of the one who did the wrong or of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are.

7:13 By all this we are encouraged. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you.

7:14 I had boasted to him about you, and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus has proved to be true as well.

7:15 And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient, receiving him with fear and trembling.

7:16 I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.

Ezekiel 21.

21:1 The word of the LORD came to me:

21:2 "Son of man, set your face against Jerusalem and preach against the sanctuary. Prophesy against the land of Israel

21:3 and say to her: 'This is what the LORD says: I am against you. I will draw my sword from its scabbard and cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked.

21:4 Because I am going to cut off the righteous and the wicked, my sword will be unsheathed against everyone from south to north.

21:5 Then all people will know that I the LORD have drawn my sword from its scabbard; it will not return again.'

21:6 "Therefore groan, son of man! Groan before them with broken heart and bitter grief.

21:7 And when they ask you, 'Why are you groaning?' you shall say, 'Because of the news that is coming. Every heart will melt and every hand go limp; every spirit will become faint and every knee become as weak as water.' It is coming! It will surely take place, declares the Sovereign LORD."

21:8 The word of the LORD came to me:

21:9 "Son of man, prophesy and say, 'This is what the Lord says: "'A sword, a sword, sharpened and polished--

21:10 sharpened for the slaughter, polished to flash like lightning! "'Shall we rejoice in the scepter of my son Judah? The sword despises every such stick.

21:11 "'The sword is appointed to be polished, to be grasped with the hand; it is sharpened and polished, made ready for the hand of the slayer.

21:12 Cry out and wail, son of man, for it is against my people; it is against all the princes of Israel. They are thrown to the sword along with my people. Therefore beat your breast.

21:13 "'Testing will surely come. And what if the scepter of Judah, which the sword despises, does not continue? declares the Sovereign LORD.'

21:14 "So then, son of man, prophesy and strike your hands together. Let the sword strike twice, even three times. It is a sword for slaughter--a sword for great slaughter, closing in on them from every side.

21:15 So that hearts may melt and the fallen be many, I have stationed the sword for slaughter at all their gates. Oh! It is made to flash like lightning, it is grasped for slaughter.

21:16 O sword, slash to the right, then to the left, wherever your blade is turned.

21:17 I too will strike my hands together, and my wrath will subside. I the LORD have spoken."

21:18 The word of the LORD came to me:

21:19 "Son of man, mark out two roads for the sword of the king of Babylon to take, both starting from the same country. Make a signpost where the road branches off to the city.

21:20 Mark out one road for the sword to come against Rabbah of the Ammonites and another against Judah and fortified Jerusalem.

21:21 For the king of Babylon will stop at the fork in the road, at the junction of the two roads, to seek an omen: He will cast lots with arrows, he will consult his idols, he will examine the liver.

21:22 Into his right hand will come the lot for Jerusalem, where he is to set up battering rams, to give the command to slaughter, to sound the battle cry, to set battering rams against the gates, to build a ramp and to erect siege works.

21:23 It will seem like a false omen to those who have sworn allegiance to him, but he will remind them of their guilt and take them captive.

21:24 "Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: 'Because you people have brought to mind your guilt by your open rebellion, revealing your sins in all that you do--because you have done this, you will be taken captive.

21:25 "'O profane and wicked prince of Israel, whose day has come, whose time of punishment has reached its climax,

21:26 this is what the Sovereign LORD says: Take off the turban, remove the crown. It will not be as it was: The lowly will be exalted and the exalted will be brought low.

21:27 A ruin! A ruin! I will make it a ruin! It will not be restored until he comes to whom it rightfully belongs; to him I will give it.'

21:28 "And you, son of man, prophesy and say, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says about the Ammonites and their insults: "'A sword, a sword, drawn for the slaughter, polished to consume and to flash like lightning!

21:29 Despite false visions concerning you and lying divinations about you, it will be laid on the necks of the wicked who are to be slain, whose day has come, whose time of punishment has reached its climax.

21:30 Return the sword to its scabbard. In the place where you were created, in the land of your ancestry, I will judge you.

21:31 I will pour out my wrath upon you and breathe out my fiery anger against you; I will hand you over to brutal men, men skilled in destruction.

21:32 You will be fuel for the fire, your blood will be shed in your land, you will be remembered no more; for I the LORD have spoken.'"

Psalms 68.

68:1 May God arise, may his enemies be scattered; may his foes flee before him.

68:2 As smoke is blown away by the wind, may you blow them away; as wax melts before the fire, may the wicked perish before God.

68:3 But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful.

68:4 Sing to God, sing praise to his name, extol him who rides on the clouds--his name is the LORD--and rejoice before him.

68:5 A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.

68:6 God sets the lonely in families, he leads forth the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

68:7 When you went out before your people, O God, when you marched through the wasteland, Selah

68:8 the earth shook, the heavens poured down rain, before God, the One of Sinai, before God, the God of Israel.

68:9 You gave abundant showers, O God; you refreshed your weary inheritance.

68:10 Your people settled in it, and from your bounty, O God, you provided for the poor.

68:11 The Lord announced the word, and great was the company of those who proclaimed it:

68:12 "Kings and armies flee in haste; in the camps men divide the plunder.

68:13 Even while you sleep among the campfires, the wings of my dove are sheathed with silver, its feathers with shining gold."

68:14 When the Almighty scattered the kings in the land, it was like snow fallen on Zalmon.

68:15 The mountains of Bashan are majestic mountains; rugged are the mountains of Bashan.

68:16 Why gaze in envy, O rugged mountains, at the mountain where God chooses to reign, where the LORD himself will dwell forever?

68:17 The chariots of God are tens of thousands and thousands of thousands; the Lord has come from Sinai into his sanctuary.

68:18 When you ascended on high, you led captives in your train; you received gifts from men, even from the rebellious--that you, O LORD God, might dwell there.

68:19 Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Selah

68:20 Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign LORD comes escape from death.

68:21 Surely God will crush the heads of his enemies, the hairy crowns of those who go on in their sins.

68:22 The Lord says, "I will bring them from Bashan; I will bring them from the depths of the sea,

68:23 that you may plunge your feet in the blood of your foes, while the tongues of your dogs have their share."

68:24 Your procession has come into view, O God, the procession of my God and King into the sanctuary.

68:25 In front are the singers, after them the musicians; with them are the maidens playing tambourines.

68:26 Praise God in the great congregation; praise the LORD in the assembly of Israel.

68:27 There is the little tribe of Benjamin, leading them, there the great throng of Judah's princes, and there the princes of Zebulun and of Naphtali.

68:28 Summon your power, O God; show us your strength, O God, as you have done before.

68:29 Because of your temple at Jerusalem kings will bring you gifts.

68:30 Rebuke the beast among the reeds, the herd of bulls among the calves of the nations. Humbled, may it bring bars of silver. Scatter the nations who delight in war.

68:31 Envoys will come from Egypt; Cush will submit herself to God.

68:32 Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth, sing praise to the Lord, Selah

68:33 to him who rides the ancient skies above, who thunders with mighty voice.

68:34 Proclaim the power of God, whose majesty is over Israel, whose power is in the skies.

68:35 You are awesome, O God, in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God!
