사무엘상 19 장.

삼상19:1 사울이 그의 아들 요나단과 그의 모든 신하에게 다윗을 죽이라 말하였더니 사울의 아들 요나단이 다윗을 심히 좋아하므로

삼상19:2 그가 다윗에게 말하여 이르되 내 아버지 사울이 너를 죽이기를 꾀하시느니라 그러므로 이제 청하노니 아침에 조심하여 은밀한 곳에 숨어 있으라

삼상19:3 내가 나가서 네가 있는 들에서 내 아버지 곁에 서서 네 일을 내 아버지와 말하다가 무엇을 보면 네게 알려 주리라 하고

삼상19:4 요나단이 그의 아버지 사울에게 다윗을 칭찬하여 이르되 원하건대 왕은 신하 다윗에게 범죄하지 마옵소서 그는 왕께 득죄하지 아니하였고 그가 왕께 행한 일은 심히 선함이니이다

삼상19:5 그가 자기 생명을 아끼지 아니하고 블레셋 사람을 죽였고 여호와께서는 온 이스라엘을 위하여 큰 구원을 이루셨으므로 왕이 이를 보고 기뻐하셨거늘 어찌 까닭 없이 다윗을 죽여 무죄한 피를 흘려 범죄하려 하시나이까

삼상19:6 사울이 요나단의 말을 듣고 맹세하되 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하거니와 그가 죽임을 당하지 아니하리라

삼상19:7 요나단이 다윗을 불러 그 모든 일을 그에게 알리고 요나단이 그를 사울에게로 인도하니 그가 사울 앞에 전과 같이 있었더라

삼상19:8 전쟁이 다시 있으므로 다윗이 나가서 블레셋 사람들과 싸워 그들을 크게 쳐죽이매 그들이 그 앞에서 도망하니라

삼상19:9 사울이 손에 단창을 가지고 그의 집에 앉았을 때에 여호와께서 부리시는 악령이 사울에게 접하였으므로 다윗이 손으로 수금을 탈 때에

삼상19:10 사울이 단창으로 다윗을 벽에 박으려 하였으나 그는 사울의 앞을 피하고 사울의 창은 벽에 박힌지라 다윗이 그 밤에 도피하매

삼상19:11 사울이 전령들을 다윗의 집에 보내어 그를 지키다가 아침에 그를 죽이게 하려 한지라 다윗의 아내 미갈이 다윗에게 말하여 이르되 당신이 이 밤에 당신의 생명을 구하지 아니하면 내일에는 죽임을 당하리라 하고

삼상19:12 미갈이 다윗을 창에서 달아 내리매 그가 피하여 도망하니라

삼상19:13 미갈이 우상을 가져다가 침상에 누이고 염소 털로 엮은 것을 그 머리에 씌우고 의복으로 그것을 덮었더니

삼상19:14 사울이 전령들을 보내어 다윗을 잡으려 하매 미갈이 이르되 그가 병들었느니라

삼상19:15 사울이 또 전령들을 보내어 다윗을 보라 하며 이르되 그를 침상째 내게로 들고 오라 내가 그를 죽이리라

삼상19:16 전령들이 들어가 본즉 침상에는 우상이 있고 염소 털로 엮은 것이 그 머리에 있었더라

삼상19:17 사울이 미갈에게 이르되 너는 어찌하여 이처럼 나를 속여 내 대적을 놓아 피하게 하였느냐 미갈이 사울에게 대답하되 그가 내게 이르기를 나를 놓아 가게 하라 어찌하여 나로 너를 죽이게 하겠느냐 하더이다 하리라

삼상19:18 다윗이 도피하여 라마로 가서 사무엘에게로 나아가서 사울이 자기에게 행한 일을 다 전하였고 다윗과 사무엘이 나욧으로 가서 살았더라

삼상19:19 어떤 사람이 사울에게 전하여 이르되 다윗이 라마 나욧에 있더이다 하매

삼상19:20 사울이 다윗을 잡으러 전령들을 보냈더니 그들이 선지자 무리가 예언하는 것과 사무엘이 그들의 수령으로 선 것을 볼 때에 하나님의 영이 사울의 전령들에게 임하매 그들도 예언을 한지라

삼상19:21 어떤 사람이 그것을 사울에게 알리매 사울이 다른 전령들을 보냈더니 그들도 예언을 했으므로 사울이 세 번째 다시 전령들을 보냈더니 그들도 예언을 한지라

삼상19:22 이에 사울도 라마로 가서 세구에 있는 큰 우물에 도착하여 물어 이르되 사무엘과 다윗이 어디 있느냐 어떤 사람이 이르되 라마 나욧에 있나이다

삼상19:23 사울이 라마 나욧으로 가니라 하나님의 영이 그에게도 임하시니 그가 라마 나욧에 이르기까지 걸어가며 예언을 하였으며 그가 또 그의 옷을 벗고 사무엘 앞에서 예언을 하며 하루 밤낮을 벗은 몸으로 누웠더라 그러므로 속담에 이르기를 사울도 선지자 중에 있느냐 하니라

고린도전서 1 장.

고전1:1 하나님의 뜻을 따라 그리스도 예수의 사도로 부르심을 받은 바울과 형제 소스데네는

고전1:2 고린도에 있는 하나님의 교회 곧 그리스도 예수 안에서 거룩하여지고 성도라 부르심을 받은 자들과 또 각처에서 우리의 주 곧 그들과 우리의 주 되신 예수 그리스도의 이름을 부르는 모든 자들에게

고전1:3 하나님 우리 아버지와 주 예수 그리스도로부터 은혜와 평강이 있기를 원하노라

고전1:4 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희에게 주신 하나님의 은혜로 말미암아 내가 너희를 위하여 항상 하나님께 감사하노니

고전1:5 이는 너희가 그 안에서 모든 일 곧 모든 언변과 모든 지식에 풍족하므로

고전1:6 그리스도의 증거가 너희 중에 견고하게 되어

고전1:7 너희가 모든 은사에 부족함이 없이 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 나타나심을 기다림이라

고전1:8 주께서 너희를 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 날에 책망할 것이 없는 자로 끝까지 견고하게 하시리라

고전1:9 너희를 불러 그의 아들 예수 그리스도 우리 주와 더불어 교제하게 하시는 하나님은 미쁘시도다

고전1:10 형제들아 내가 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 너희를 권하노니 모두가 같은 말을 하고 너희 가운데 분쟁이 없이 같은 마음과 같은 뜻으로 온전히 합하라

고전1:11 내 형제들아 글로에의 집 편으로 너희에게 대한 말이 내게 들리니 곧 너희 가운데 분쟁이 있다는 것이라

고전1:12 내가 이것을 말하거니와 너희가 각각 이르되 나는 바울에게, 나는 아볼로에게, 나는 게바에게, 나는 그리스도에게 속한 자라 한다는 것이니

고전1:13 그리스도께서 어찌 나뉘었느냐 바울이 너희를 위하여 십자가에 못 박혔으며 바울의 이름으로 너희가 세례를 받았느냐

고전1:14 나는 그리스보와 가이오 외에는 너희 중 아무에게도 내가 세례를 베풀지 아니한 것을 감사하노니

고전1:15 이는 아무도 나의 이름으로 세례를 받았다 말하지 못하게 하려 함이라

고전1:16 내가 또한 스데바나 집 사람에게 세례를 베풀었고 그 외에는 다른 누구에게 세례를 베풀었는지 알지 못하노라

고전1:17 그리스도께서 나를 보내심은 세례를 베풀게 하려 하심이 아니요 오직 복음을 전하게 하려 하심이로되 말의 지혜로 하지 아니함은 그리스도의 십자가가 헛되지 않게 하려 함이라

고전1:18 십자가의 도가 멸망하는 자들에게는 미련한 것이요 구원을 받는 우리에게는 하나님의 능력이라

고전1:19 기록된 바 내가 지혜 있는 자들의 지혜를 멸하고 총명한 자들의 총명을 폐하리라 하였으니

고전1:20 지혜 있는 자가 어디 있느냐 선비가 어디 있느냐 이 세대에 변론가가 어디 있느냐 하나님께서 이 세상의 지혜를 미련하게 하신 것이 아니냐

고전1:21 하나님의 지혜에 있어서는 이 세상이 자기 지혜로 하나님을 알지 못하므로 하나님께서 전도의 미련한 것으로 믿는 자들을 구원하시기를 기뻐하셨도다

고전1:22 유대인은 표적을 구하고 헬라인은 지혜를 찾으나

고전1:23 우리는 십자가에 못 박힌 그리스도를 전하니 유대인에게는 거리끼는 것이요 이방인에게는 미련한 것이로되

고전1:24 오직 부르심을 받은 자들에게는 유대인이나 헬라인이나 그리스도는 하나님의 능력이요 하나님의 지혜니라

고전1:25 하나님의 어리석음이 사람보다 지혜롭고 하나님의 약하심이 사람보다 강하니라

고전1:26 형제들아 너희를 부르심을 보라 육체를 따라 지혜로운 자가 많지 아니하며 능한 자가 많지 아니하며 문벌 좋은 자가 많지 아니하도다

고전1:27 그러나 하나님께서 세상의 미련한 것들을 택하사 지혜 있는 자들을 부끄럽게 하려 하시고 세상의 약한 것들을 택하사 강한 것들을 부끄럽게 하려 하시며

고전1:28 하나님께서 세상의 천한 것들과 멸시 받는 것들과 없는 것들을 택하사 있는 것들을 폐하려 하시나니

고전1:29 이는 아무 육체도 하나님 앞에서 자랑하지 못하게 하려 하심이라

고전1:30 너희는 하나님으로부터 나서 그리스도 예수 안에 있고 예수는 하나님으로부터 나와서 우리에게 지혜와 의로움과 거룩함과 구원함이 되셨으니

고전1:31 기록된 바 자랑하는 자는 주 안에서 자랑하라 함과 같게 하려 함이라

예레미야애가 4 장.

애4:1 슬프다 어찌 그리 금이 빛을 잃고 순금이 변질하였으며 성소의 돌들이 거리 어귀마다 쏟아졌는고

애4:2 순금에 비할 만큼 보배로운 시온의 아들들이 어찌 그리 토기장이가 만든 질항아리 같이 여김이 되었는고

애4:3 들개들도 젖을 주어 그들의 새끼를 먹이나 딸 내 백성은 잔인하여 마치 광야의 타조 같도다

애4:4 젖먹이가 목말라서 혀가 입천장에 붙음이여 어린 아이들이 떡을 구하나 떼어 줄 사람이 없도다

애4:5 맛있는 음식을 먹던 자들이 외롭게 거리 거리에 있으며 이전에는 붉은 옷을 입고 자라난 자들이 이제는 거름더미를 안았도다

애4:6 전에 소돔이 사람의 손을 대지 아니하였는데도 순식간에 무너지더니 이제는 딸 내 백성의 죄가 소돔의 죄악보다 무겁도다

애4:7 전에는 존귀한 자들의 몸이 눈보다 깨끗하고 젖보다 희며 산호들 보다 붉어 그들의 윤택함이 갈아서 빛낸 청옥 같더니

애4:8 이제는 그들의 얼굴이 숯보다 검고 그들의 가죽이 뼈들에 붙어 막대기 같이 말랐으니 어느 거리에서든지 알아볼 사람이 없도다

애4:9 칼에 죽은 자들이 주려 죽은 자들보다 나음은 토지 소산이 끊어지므로 그들은 찔림 받은 자들처럼 점점 쇠약하여 감이로다

애4:10 딸 내 백성이 멸망할 때에 자비로운 부녀들이 자기들의 손으로 자기들의 자녀들을 삶아 먹었도다

애4:11 여호와께서 그의 분을 내시며 그의 맹렬한 진노를 쏟으심이여 시온에 불을 지르사 그 터를 사르셨노다

애4:12 대적과 원수가 예루살렘 성문으로 들어갈 줄은 세상의 모든 왕들과 천하 모든 백성이 믿지 못하였었도다

애4:13 그의 선지자들의 죄들과 제사장들의 죄악들 때문이니 그들이 성읍 안에서 의인들의 피를 흘렸도다

애4:14 그들이 거리 거리에서 맹인 같이 방황함이여 그들의 옷들이 피에 더러워졌으므로 그들이 만질 수 없도다

애4:15 바람들이 그들에게 외쳐 이르기를 저리 가라 부정하다, 저리 가라, 저리 가라, 만지지 말라 하였음이여 그들이 도망하여 방황할 때에 이방인들이 말하기를 그들이 다시는 여기서 살지 못하리라 하였도다

애4:16 여호와께서 노하여 그들을 흩으시고 다시는 돌보지 아니하시리니 그들이 제사장들을 높이지 아니하였으며 장로들을 대접하지 아니하였음이로다

애4:17 우리가 헛되이 도움을 바라므로 우리의 눈이 상함이여 우리를 구원하지 못할 나라를 바라보고 바라보았도다

애4:18 그들이 우리의 걸음을 엿보니 우리가 거리마다 다 다닐 수 없음이여 우리의 끝이 가깝고 우리의 날들이 다하였으며 우리의 종말이 이르렀도다

애4:19 우리를 뒤쫓는 자들이 하늘의 독수리들보다 빠름이여 산 꼭대기 까지도 뒤쫓으며 광야에서도 우리를 잡으려고 매복하였도다

애4:20 우리의 콧김 곧 여호와께서 기름 부으신 자가 그들의 함정에 빠졌음이여 우리가 그를 가리키며 전에 이르기를 우리가 그의 그늘 아래에서 이방인들 중에 살겠다 하던 자로다

애4:21 우스 땅에 사는 딸 에돔아 즐거워하며 기뻐하라 잔이 네게도 이를지니 네가 취하여 벌거벗으리라

애4:22 딸 시온아 네 죄악의 형벌이 다 하였으니 주께서 다시는 너로 사로잡혀 가지 아니하게 하시리로다 딸 에돔아 주께서 네 죄악을 벌하시며 네 허물을 드러내시리로다

시편 35 장.

시35:1 여호와여 나와 다투는 자와 다투시고 나와 싸우는 자와 싸우소서

시35:2 방패와 손 방패를 잡으시고 일어나 나를 도우소서

시35:3 창을 빼사 나를 쫓는 자의 길을 막으시고 또 내 영혼에서 나는 네 구원이라 이르소서

시35:4 내 생명을 찾는 자들이 부끄러워 수치를 당하게 하시며 나를 상해하려 하는 자들이 물러가 낭패를 당하게 하소서

시35:5 그들을 바람 앞에 겨와 같게 하시고 여호와의 천사가 그들을 몰아내게 하소서

시35:6 그들의 길을 어둡고 미끄럽게 하시며 여호와의 천사가 그들을 뒤쫓게 하소서

시35:7 그들이 까닭 없이 나를 잡으려고 그들의 그물을 웅덩이에 숨기며 까닭 없이 내 생명을 해하려고 함정을 팠사오니

시35:8 멸망이 순식간에 그에게 닥치게 하시며 그가 숨긴 그물에 자기가 잡히게 하시며 멸망 중에 떨어지게 하소서

시35:9 내 영혼이 여호와를 즐거워함이여 그의 구원을 기뻐하리로다

시35:10 내 모든 뼈가 이르기를 여호와와 같은 이가 누구냐 그는 가난한 자를 그보다 강한 자에게서 건지시고 가난하고 궁핍한 자를 노략하는 자에게서 건지시는 이라 하리로다

시35:11 불의한 증인들이 일어나서 내가 알지 못하는 일로 내게 질문하면

시35:12 내게 선을 악으로 갚아 나의 영혼을 외롭게 하나

시35:13 나는 그들이 병들었을 때에 굵은 베 옷을 입으며 금식하여 내 영혼을 괴롭게 하였더니 내 기도가 내 품으로 돌아왔도다

시35:14 내가 나의 친구와 형제에게 행함 같이 그들에게 행하였으며 내가 몸을 굽히고 슬퍼하기를 어머니를 곡함 같이 하였도다

시35:15 그러나 내가 넘어지매 그들이 기뻐하여 서로 모임이여 불량배가 내가 알지 못하는 중에 모여서 나를 치며 찢기를 마지아니하도다

시35:16 그들은 연회에서 망령되이 조롱하는 자 같이 나를 향하여 그들의 이를 갈도다

시35:17 주여 어느 때까지 관망하시려 하나이까 내 영혼을 저 멸망자에게서 구원하시며 내 유일한 것을 사자들에게서 건지소서

시35:18 내가 대회 중에서 주께 감사하며 많은 백성 중에서 주를 찬송하리이다

시35:19 부당하게 나의 원수된 자가 나로 말미암아 기뻐하지 못하게 하시며 까닭 없이 나를 미워하는 자들이 서로 눈짓하지 못하게 하소서

시35:20 무릇 그들은 화평을 말하지 아니하고 오히려 평안히 땅에 사는 자들을 거짓말로 모략하며

시35:21 또 그들이 나를 향하여 입을 크게 벌리고 하하 우리가 목격하였다 하나이다

시35:22 여호와여 주께서 이를 보셨사오니 잠잠하지 마옵소서 주여 나를 멀리하지 마옵소서

시35:23 나의 하나님, 나의 주여 떨치고 깨셔서 나를 공판하시며 나의 송사를 다스리소서

시35:24 여호와 나의 하나님이여 주의 공의대로 나를 판단하사 그들이 나로 말미암아 기뻐하지 못하게 하소서

시35:25 그들이 마음속으로 이르기를 아하 소원을 성취하였다 하지 못하게 하시며 우리가 그를 삼켰다 말하지 못하게 하소서

시35:26 나의 재난을 기뻐하는 자들이 함께 부끄러워 낭패를 당하게 하시며 나를 향하여 스스로 뽐내는 자들이 수치와 욕을 당하게 하소서

시35:27 나의 의를 즐거워하는 자들이 기꺼이 노래 부르고 즐거워하게 하시며 그의 종의 평안함을 기뻐하시는 여호와는 위대하시다 하는 말을 그들이 항상 말하게 하소서

시35:28 나의 혀가 주의 의를 말하며 종일토록 주를 찬송하리이다

1 Samuel 19.

19:1 Saul told his son Jonathan and all the attendants to kill David. But Jonathan was very fond of David

19:2 and warned him, "My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding and stay there.

19:3 I will go out and stand with my father in the field where you are. I'll speak to him about you and will tell you what I find out."

19:4 Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, "Let not the king do wrong to his servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly.

19:5 He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The LORD won a great victory for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent man like David by killing him for no reason?"

19:6 Saul listened to Jonathan and took this oath: "As surely as the LORD lives, David will not be put to death."

19:7 So Jonathan called David and told him the whole conversation. He brought him to Saul, and David was with Saul as before.

19:8 Once more war broke out, and David went out and fought the Philistines. He struck them with such force that they fled before him.

19:9 But an evil spirit from the LORD came upon Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand. While David was playing the harp,

19:10 Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear, but David eluded him as Saul drove the spear into the wall. That night David made good his escape.

19:11 Saul sent men to David's house to watch it and to kill him in the morning. But Michal, David's wife, warned him, "If you don't run for your life tonight, tomorrow you'll be killed."

19:12 So Michal let David down through a window, and he fled and escaped.

19:13 Then Michal took an idol and laid it on the bed, covering it with a garment and putting some goats' hair at the head.

19:14 When Saul sent the men to capture David, Michal said, "He is ill."

19:15 Then Saul sent the men back to see David and told them, "Bring him up to me in his bed so that I may kill him."

19:16 But when the men entered, there was the idol in the bed, and at the head was some goats' hair.

19:17 Saul said to Michal, "Why did you deceive me like this and send my enemy away so that he escaped?" Michal told him, "He said to me, 'Let me get away. Why should I kill you?'"

19:18 When David had fled and made his escape, he went to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to Naioth and stayed there.

19:19 Word came to Saul: "David is in Naioth at Ramah";

19:20 so he sent men to capture him. But when they saw a group of prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing there as their leader, the Spirit of God came upon Saul's men and they also prophesied.

19:21 Saul was told about it, and he sent more men, and they prophesied too. Saul sent men a third time, and they also prophesied.

19:22 Finally, he himself left for Ramah and went to the great cistern at Secu. And he asked, "Where are Samuel and David?" "Over in Naioth at Ramah," they said.

19:23 So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah. But the Spirit of God came even upon him, and he walked along prophesying until he came to Naioth.

19:24 He stripped off his robes and also prophesied in Samuel's presence. He lay that way all that day and night. This is why people say, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"

1 Corinthians 1.

1:1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,

1:2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ--their Lord and ours:

1:3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

1:4 I always thank God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus.

1:5 For in him you have been enriched in every way--in all your speaking and in all your knowledge--

1:6 because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you.

1:7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.

1:8 He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1:9 God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.

1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought.

1:11 My brothers, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you.

1:12 What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas"; still another, "I follow Christ."

1:13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul?

1:14 I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius,

1:15 so no one can say that you were baptized into my name.

1:16 (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't remember if I baptized anyone else.)

1:17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel--not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

1:19 For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."

1:20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

1:21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

1:22 Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom,

1:23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,

1:24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

1:25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength.

1:26 Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.

1:27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

1:28 He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things--and the things that are not--to nullify the things that are,

1:29 so that no one may boast before him.

1:30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God--that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.

1:31 Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."

Lamentations 4.

4:1 How the gold has lost its luster, the fine gold become dull! The sacred gems are scattered at the head of every street.

4:2 How the precious sons of Zion, once worth their weight in gold, are now considered as pots of clay, the work of a potter's hands!

4:3 Even jackals offer their breasts to nurse their young, but my people have become heartless like ostriches in the desert.

4:4 Because of thirst the infant's tongue sticks to the roof of its mouth; the children beg for bread, but no one gives it to them.

4:5 Those who once ate delicacies are destitute in the streets. Those nurtured in purple now lie on ash heaps.

4:6 The punishment of my people is greater than that of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment without a hand turned to help her.

4:7 Their princes were brighter than snow and whiter than milk, their bodies more ruddy than rubies, their appearance like sapphires.

4:8 But now they are blacker than soot; they are not recognized in the streets. Their skin has shriveled on their bones; it has become as dry as a stick.

4:9 Those killed by the sword are better off than those who die of famine; racked with hunger, they waste away for lack of food from the field.

4:10 With their own hands compassionate women have cooked their own children, who became their food when my people were destroyed.

4:11 The LORD has given full vent to his wrath; he has poured out his fierce anger. He kindled a fire in Zion that consumed her foundations.

4:12 The kings of the earth did not believe, nor did any of the world's people, that enemies and foes could enter the gates of Jerusalem.

4:13 But it happened because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, who shed within her the blood of the righteous.

4:14 Now they grope through the streets like men who are blind. They are so defiled with blood that no one dares to touch their garments.

4:15 "Go away! You are unclean!" men cry to them. "Away! Away! Don't touch us!" When they flee and wander about, people among the nations say, "They can stay here no longer."

4:16 The LORD himself has scattered them; he no longer watches over them. The priests are shown no honor, the elders no favor.

4:17 Moreover, our eyes failed, looking in vain for help; from our towers we watched for a nation that could not save us.

4:18 Men stalked us at every step, so we could not walk in our streets. Our end was near, our days were numbered, for our end had come.

4:19 Our pursuers were swifter than eagles in the sky; they chased us over the mountains and lay in wait for us in the desert.

4:20 The LORD'S anointed, our very life breath, was caught in their traps. We thought that under his shadow we would live among the nations.

4:21 Rejoice and be glad, O Daughter of Edom, you who live in the land of Uz. But to you also the cup will be passed; you will be drunk and stripped naked.

4:22 O Daughter of Zion, your punishment will end; he will not prolong your exile. But, O Daughter of Edom, he will punish your sin and expose your wickedness.

Psalms 35.

35:1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me.

35:2 Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid.

35:3 Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation."

35:4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay.

35:5 May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away;

35:6 may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them.

35:7 Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me,

35:8 may ruin overtake them by surprise--may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin.

35:9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation.

35:10 My whole being will exclaim, "Who is like you, O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them."

35:11 Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about.

35:12 They repay me evil for good and leave my soul forlorn.

35:13 Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered,

35:14 I went about mourning as though for my friend or brother. I bowed my head in grief as though weeping for my mother.

35:15 But when I stumbled, they gathered in glee; attackers gathered against me when I was unaware. They slandered me without ceasing.

35:16 Like the ungodly they maliciously mocked; they gnashed their teeth at me.

35:17 O LORD, how long will you look on? Rescue my life from their ravages, my precious life from these lions.

35:18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise you.

35:19 Let not those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; let not those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye.

35:20 They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land.

35:21 They gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it."

35:22 O LORD, you have seen this; be not silent. Do not be far from me, O Lord.

35:23 Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord.

35:24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, O LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me.

35:25 Do not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!" or say, "We have swallowed him up."

35:26 May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace.

35:27 May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant."

35:28 My tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day long.
