사무엘상 14 장.

삼상14:1 하루는 사울의 아들 요나단이 자기의 무기를 든 소년에게 이르되 우리가 건너편 블레셋 사람들의 부대로 건너가자 하고 그의 아버지에게는 아뢰지 아니하였더라

삼상14:2 사울이 기브아 변두리 미그론에 있는 석류나무 아래에 머물렀고 함께 한 백성은 육백 명 가량이며

삼상14:3 아히야는 에봇을 입고 거기 있었으니 그는 이가봇의 형제 아히둡의 아들이요 비느하스의 손자요 실로에서 여호와의 제사장이 되었던 엘리의 증손이었더라 백성은 요나단이 간 줄을 알지 못하니라

삼상14:4 요나단이 블레셋 사람들에게로 건너가려 하는 어귀 사이 이쪽에는 험한 바위가 있고 저쪽에도 험한 바위가 있는데 하나의 이름은 보세스요 하나의 이름은 세네라

삼상14:5 한 바위는 북쪽에서 믹마스 앞에 일어섰고 하나는 남쪽에서 게바 앞에 일어섰더라

삼상14:6 요나단이 자기의 무기를 든 소년에게 이르되 우리가 이 할례 받지 않은 자들에게로 건너가자 여호와께서 우리를 위하여 일하실까 하노라 여호와의 구원은 사람이 많고 적음에 달리지 아니하였느니라

삼상14:7 무기를 든 자가 그에게 이르되 당신의 마음에 있는 대로 다 행하여 앞서 가소서 내가 당신과 마음을 같이 하여 따르리이다

삼상14:8 요나단이 이르되 보라 우리가 그 사람들에게로 건너가서 그들에게 보이리니

삼상14:9 그들이 만일 우리에게 이르기를 우리가 너희에게로 가기를 기다리라 하면 우리는 우리가 있는 곳에 가만히 서서 그들에게로 올라가지 말 것이요

삼상14:10 그들이 만일 말하기를 우리에게로 올라오라 하면 우리가 올라갈 것은 여호와께서 그들을 우리 손에 넘기셨음이니 이것이 우리에게 표징이 되리라 하고

삼상14:11 둘이 다 블레셋 사람들에게 보이매 블레셋 사람이 이르되 보라 히브리 사람이 그들이 숨었던 구멍에서 나온다 하고

삼상14:12 그 부대 사람들이 요나단과 그의 무기를 든 자에게 이르되 우리에게로 올라오라 너희에게 보여 줄 것이 있느니라 한지라 요나단이 자기의 무기를 든 자에게 이르되 나를 따라 올라오라 여호와께서 그들을 이스라엘의 손에 넘기셨느니라 하고

삼상14:13 요나단이 손 발로 기어 올라갔고 그 무기를 든 자도 따랐더라 블레셋 사람들이 요나단 앞에서 엎드러지매 무기를 든 자가 따라 가며 죽였으니

삼상14:14 요나단과 그 무기를 든 자가 반나절 갈이 땅 안에서 처음으로 쳐죽인 자가 이십 명 가량이라

삼상14:15 들에 있는 진영과 모든 백성들이 공포에 떨었고 부대와 노략꾼들도 떨었으며 땅도 진동하였으니 이는 큰 떨림이었더라

삼상14:16 베냐민 기브아에 있는 사울의 파수꾼이 바라본즉 허다한 블레셋 사람들이 무너져 이리 저리 흩어지더라

삼상14:17 사울이 자기와 함께 한 백성에게 이르되 우리에게서 누가 나갔는지 점호하여 보라 하여 점호한즉 요나단과 그의 무기를 든 자가 없어졌더라

삼상14:18 사울이 아히야에게 이르되 하나님의 궤를 이리로 가져오라 하니 그 때에 하나님의 궤가 이스라엘 자손과 함께 있음이니라

삼상14:19 사울이 제사장에게 말할 때에 블레셋 사람들의 진영에 소동이 점점 더한지라 사울이 제사장에게 이르되 네 손을 거두라 하고

삼상14:20 사울과 그와 함께 한 모든 백성이 모여 전장에 가서 본즉 블레셋 사람들이 각각 칼로 자기의 동무들을 치므로 크게 혼란하였더라

삼상14:21 전에 블레셋 사람들과 함께 하던 히브리 사람이 사방에서 블레셋 사람들과 함께 진영에 들어 왔더니 그들이 돌이켜 사울과 요나단과 함께 한 이스라엘 사람들과 합하였고

삼상14:22 에브라임 산지에 숨었던 이스라엘 모든 사람도 블레셋 사람들이 도망함을 듣고 싸우러 나와서 그들을 추격하였더라

삼상14:23 여호와께서 그 날에 이스라엘을 구원하시므로 전쟁이 벧아웬을 지나니라

삼상14:24 이 날에 이스라엘 백성들이 피곤하였으니 이는 사울이 백성에게 맹세시켜 경계하여 이르기를 저녁 곧 내가 내 원수에게 보복하는 때까지 아무 음식물이든지 먹는 사람은 저주를 받을지어다 하였음이라 그러므로 모든 백성이 음식물을 맛보지 못하고

삼상14:25 그들이 다 수풀에 들어간즉 땅에 꿀이 있더라

삼상14:26 백성이 수풀로 들어갈 때에 꿀이 흐르는 것을 보고도 그들이 맹세를 두려워하여 손을 그 입에 대는 자가 없었으나

삼상14:27 요나단은 그의 아버지가 백성에게 맹세하여 명령할 때에 듣지 못하였으므로 손에 가진 지팡이 끝을 내밀어 벌집의 꿀을 찍고 그의 손을 돌려 입에 대매 눈이 밝아졌더라

삼상14:28 그 때에 백성 중 한 사람이 말하여 이르되 당신의 부친이 백성에게 맹세하여 엄히 말씀하시기를 오늘 음식물을 먹는 사람은 저주를 받을지어다 하셨나이다 그러므로 백성이 피곤하였나이다 하니

삼상14:29 요나단이 이르되 내 아버지께서 이 땅을 곤란하게 하셨도다 보라 내가 이 꿀 조금을 맛보고도 내 눈이 이렇게 밝아졌거든

삼상14:30 하물며 백성이 오늘 그 대적에게서 탈취하여 얻은 것을 임의로 먹었더라면 블레셋 사람을 살륙함이 더욱 많지 아니하였겠느냐

삼상14:31 그 날에 백성이 믹마스에서부터 아얄론에 이르기까지 블레셋 사람들을 쳤으므로 그들이 심히 피곤한지라

삼상14:32 백성이 이에 탈취한 물건에 달려가서 양과 소와 송아지들을 끌어다가 그것을 땅에서 잡아 피째 먹었더니

삼상14:33 무리가 사울에게 전하여 이르되 보소서 백성이 고기를 피째 먹어 여호와께 범죄하였나이다 사울이 이르되 너희가 믿음 없이 행하였도다 이제 큰 돌을 내게로 굴려 오라 하고

삼상14:34 또 사울이 이르되 너희는 백성 중에 흩어져 다니며 그들에게 이르기를 사람은 각기 소와 양을 이리로 끌어다가 여기서 잡아 먹되 피째로 먹어 여호와께 범죄하지 말라 하라 하매 그 밤에 모든 백성이 각각 자기의 소를 끌어다가 거기서 잡으니라

삼상14:35 사울이 여호와를 위하여 제단을 쌓았으니 이는 그가 여호와를 위하여 처음 쌓은 제단이었더라

삼상14:36 사울이 이르되 우리가 밤에 블레셋 사람들을 추격하여 동틀 때까지 그들 중에서 탈취하고 한 사람도 남기지 말자 무리가 이르되 왕의 생각에 좋은 대로 하소서 할 때에 제사장이 이르되 이리로 와서 하나님께로 나아가사이다 하매

삼상14:37 사울이 하나님에 묻자오되 내가 블레셋 사람들을 추격하리이까 주께서 그들을 이스라엘의 손에 넘기시겠나이까 하되 그 날에 대답하지 아니하시는지라

삼상14:38 사울이 이르되 너희 군대의 지휘관들아 다 이리로 오라 오늘 이 죄가 누구에게 있나 알아보자

삼상14:39 이스라엘을 구원하신 여호와께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하노니 내 아들 요나단에게 있다 할지라도 반드시 죽으리라 하되 모든 백성 중 한 사람도 대답하지 아니하매

삼상14:40 이에 그가 온 이스라엘에게 이르되 너희는 저쪽에 있으라 나와 내 아들 요나단은 이쪽에 있으리라 백성이 사울에게 말하되 왕의 생각에 좋은 대로 하소서 하니라

삼상14:41 이에 사울이 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께 아뢰되 원하건대 실상을 보이소서 하였더니 요나단과 사울이 뽑히고 백성은 면한지라

삼상14:42 사울이 이르되 나와 내 아들 요나단 사이에 뽑으라 하였더니 요나단이 뽑히니라

삼상14:43 사울이 요나단에게 이르되 네가 행한 것을 내게 말하라 요나단이 말하여 이르되 내가 다만 내 손에 가진 지팡이 끝으로 꿀을 조금 맛보았을 뿐이오나 내가 죽을 수밖에 없나이다

삼상14:44 사울이 이르되 요나단아 네가 반드시 죽으리라 그렇지 않으면 하나님이 내게 벌을 내리시고 또 내리시기를 원하노라 하니

삼상14:45 백성이 사울에게 말하되 이스라엘에 이 큰 구원을 이룬 요나단이 죽겠나이까 결단코 그렇지 아니하니이다 여호와의 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하옵나니 그의 머리털 하나도 땅에 떨어지지 아니할 것은 그가 오늘 하나님과 동역하였음이니이다 하여 백성이 요나단을 구원하여 죽지 않게 하니라

삼상14:46 사울이 블레셋 사람들 추격하기를 그치고 올라가매 블레셋 사람들이 자기 곳으로 돌아가니라

삼상14:47 사울이 이스라엘 왕위에 오른 후에 사방에 있는 모든 대적 곧 모압과 암몬 자손과 에돔과 소바의 왕들과 블레셋 사람들을 쳤는데 향하는 곳마다 이겼고

삼상14:48 용감하게 아말렉 사람들을 치고 이스라엘을 그 약탈하는 자들의 손에서 건졌더라

삼상14:49 사울의 아들은 요나단과 이스위와 말기수아요 그의 두 딸의 이름은 이러하니 맏딸의 이름은 메랍이요 작은 딸의 이름은 미갈이며

삼상14:50 사울의 아내의 이름은 아히노암이니 아히마아스의 딸이요 그의 군사령관의 이름은 아브넬이니 사울의 숙부 넬의 아들이며

삼상14:51 사울의 아버지는 기스요 아브넬의 아버지는 넬이니 아비엘의 아들이었더라

삼상14:52 사울이 사는 날 동안에 블레셋 사람과 큰 싸움이 있었으므로 사울이 힘 센 사람이나 용감한 사람을 보면 그들을 불러모았더라

로 마 서 12 장.

롬12:1 그러므로 형제들아 내가 하나님의 모든 자비하심으로 너희를 권하노니 너희 몸을 하나님이 기뻐하시는 거룩한 산 제물로 드리라 이는 너희가 드릴 영적 예배니라

롬12:2 너희는 이 세대를 본받지 말고 오직 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받아 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 온전하신 뜻이 무엇인지 분별하도록 하라

롬12:3 내게 주신 은혜로 말미암아 너희 각 사람에게 말하노니 마땅히 생각할 그 이상의 생각을 품지 말고 오직 하나님께서 각 사람에게 나누어 주신 믿음의 분량대로 지혜롭게 생각하라

롬12:4 우리가 한 몸에 많은 지체를 가졌으나 모든 지체가 같은 기능을 가진 것이 아니니

롬12:5 이와 같이 우리 많은 사람이 그리스도 안에서 한 몸이 되어 서로 지체가 되었느니라

롬12:6 우리에게 주신 은혜대로 받은 은사가 각각 다르니 혹 예언이면 믿음의 분수대로,

롬12:7 혹 섬기는 일이면 섬기는 일로, 혹 가르치는 자면 가르치는 일로,

롬12:8 혹 위로하는 자면 위로하는 일로, 구제하는 자는 성실함으로, 다스리는 자는 부지런함으로, 긍휼을 베푸는 자는 즐거움으로 할 것이니라

롬12:9 사랑에는 거짓이 없나니 악을 미워하고 선에 속하라

롬12:10 형제를 사랑하며 서로 우애하고 존경하기를 서로 먼저 하며

롬12:11 부지런하여 게으르지 말고 열심을 품고 주를 섬기라

롬12:12 소망 중에 즐거워하며 환난 중에 참으며 기도에 항상 힘쓰며

롬12:13 성도들의 쓸 것을 공급하며 손 대접하기를 힘쓰라

롬12:14 너희를 박해하는 자를 축복하라 축복하고 저주하지 말라

롬12:15 즐거워하는 자들과 함께 즐거워하고 우는 자들과 함께 울라

롬12:16 서로 마음을 같이하며 높은 데 마음을 두지 말고 도리어 낮은 데 처하며 스스로 지혜 있는 체 하지 말라

롬12:17 아무에게도 악을 악으로 갚지 말고 모든 사람 앞에서 선한 일을 도모하라

롬12:18 할 수 있거든 너희로서는 모든 사람과 더불어 화목하라

롬12:19 내 사랑하는 자들아 너희가 친히 원수를 갚지 말고 하나님의 진노하심에 맡기라 기록되었으되 원수 갚는 것이 내게 있으니 내가 갚으리라고 주께서 말씀하시니라

롬12:20 네 원수가 주리거든 먹이고 목마르거든 마시게 하라 그리함으로 네가 숯불을 그 머리에 쌓아 놓으리라

롬12:21 악에게 지지 말고 선으로 악을 이기라

예레미야 51 장.

렘51:1 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 보라 내가 멸망시키는 자의 심령을 부추겨 바벨론을 치고 또 나를 대적하는 자 중에 있는 자를 치되

렘51:2 내가 타국인을 바벨론에 보내어 키질하여 그의 땅을 비게 하리니 재난의 날에 그를 에워싸고 치리로다

렘51:3 활을 당기는 자를 향하며 갑옷을 입고 일어선 자를 향하여 쏘는 자는 그의 활을 당길 것이라 그의 장정들을 불쌍히 여기지 말며 그의 군대를 전멸시켜라

렘51:4 무리가 갈대아 사람의 땅에서 죽임을 당하여 엎드러질 것이요 관통상을 당한 자가 거리에 있으리라

렘51:5 이스라엘과 유다가 이스라엘의 거룩하신 이를 거역하므로 죄과가 땅에 가득하나 그의 하나님 만군의 여호와에게 버림 받은 홀아비는 아니니라

렘51:6 바벨론 가운데서 도망하여 나와서 각기 생명을 구원하고 그의 죄악으로 말미암아 끊어짐을 보지 말지어다 이는 여호와의 보복의 때니 그에게 보복하시리라

렘51:7 바벨론은 여호와의 손에 잡혀 있어 온 세계가 취하게 하는 금 잔이라 뭇 민족이 그 포도주를 마심으로 미쳤도다

렘51:8 바벨론이 갑자기 넘어져 파멸되니 이로 말미암아 울라 그 상처를 위하여 유향을 구하라 혹 나으리로다

렘51:9 우리가 바벨론을 치료하려 하여도 낫지 아니한즉 버리고 각기 고향으로 돌아가자 그 화가 하늘에 미쳤고 궁창에 달하였음이로다

렘51:10 여호와께서 우리 공의를 드러내셨으니 오라 시온에서 우리 하나님 여호와의 일을 선포하자

렘51:11 화살을 갈며 둥근 방패를 준비하라 여호와께서 메대 왕들의 마음을 부추기사 바벨론을 멸하기로 뜻하시나니 이는 여호와께서 보복하시는 것 곧 그의 성전을 위하여 보복하시는 것이라

렘51:12 바벨론 성벽을 향하여 깃발을 세우고 튼튼히 지키며 파수꾼을 세우며 복병을 매복시켜 방비하라 이는 여호와께서 바벨론 주민에 대하여 말씀하신 대로 계획하시고 행하심이로다

렘51:13 많은 물가에 살면서 재물이 많은 자여 네 재물의 한계 곧 네 끝이 왔도다

렘51:14 만군의 여호와께서 자기의 목숨을 두고 맹세하시되 내가 진실로 사람을 메뚜기 같이 네게 가득하게 하리니 그들이 너를 향하여 환성을 높이리라 하시도다

렘51:15 여호와께서 그의 능력으로 땅을 지으셨고 그의 지혜로 세계를 세우셨고 그의 명철로 하늘들을 펴셨으며

렘51:16 그가 목소리를 내신즉 하늘에 많은 물이 생기나니 그는 땅 끝에서 구름이 오르게 하시며 비를 위하여 번개를 치게 하시며 그의 곳간에서 바람을 내시거늘

렘51:17 사람마다 어리석고 무식하도다 금장색마다 자기가 만든 신상으로 말미암아 수치를 당하나니 이는 그 부어 만든 우상은 거짓이요 그 속에 생기가 없음이라

렘51:18 그것들은 헛된 것이요 조롱 거리이니 징벌하시는 때에 멸망할 것이나

렘51:19 야곱의 분깃은 그와 같지 아니 하시니 그는 만물을 지으신 분이요 이스라엘은 그의 소유인 지파라 그의 이름은 만군의 여호와시니라

렘51:20 여호와께서 이르시기를 너는 나의 철퇴 곧 무기라 나는 네가 나라들을 분쇄하며 네가 국가들을 멸하며

렘51:21 네가 말과 기마병을 분쇄하며 네가 병거와 병거대를 부수며

렘51:22 네가 남자와 여자를 분쇄하며 네가 노년과 유년을 분쇄하며 네가 청년과 처녀를 분쇄하며

렘51:23 네가 목자와 그 양 떼를 분쇄하며 네가 농부와 그 멍엣소를 분쇄하며 네가 도백과 태수들을 분쇄하도록 하리로다

렘51:24 너희 눈앞에서 그들이 시온에서 모든 악을 행한 대로 내가 바벨론과 갈대아 모든 주민에게 갚으리라 여호와의 말씀이니라

렘51:25 여호와의 말씀이니라 온 세계를 멸하는 멸망의 산아 보라 나는 네 원수라 나의 손을 네 위에 펴서 너를 바위에서 굴리고 너로 불 탄 산이 되게 할 것이니

렘51:26 사람이 네게서 집 모퉁잇돌이나 기촛돌을 취하지 아니할 것이요 너는 영원히 황무지가 될 것이니라 여호와의 말씀이니라

렘51:27 땅에 깃발을 세우며 나라들 가운데에 나팔을 불어서 나라들을 동원시켜 그를 치며 아라랏과 민니와 아스그나스 나라를 불러모아 그를 치며 사무관을 세우고 그를 치되 극성스런 메뚜기 같이 그 말들을 몰아오게 하라

렘51:28 뭇 백성 곧 메대 사람의 왕들과 그 도백들과 그 모든 태수와 그 관할하는 모든 땅을 준비시켜 그를 치게 하라

렘51:29 땅이 진동하며 소용돌이치나니 이는 여호와께서 바벨론을 쳐서 그 땅으로 황폐하여 주민이 없게 할 계획이 섰음이라

렘51:30 바벨론의 용사는 싸움을 그치고 그들의 요새에 머무르나 기력이 쇠하여 여인 같이 되며 그들의 거처는 불타고 그 문빗장은 부러졌으며

렘51:31 보발꾼은 보발꾼을 맞으려고 달리며 전령은 전령을 맞으려고 달려가 바벨론의 왕에게 전하기를 그 성읍 사방이 함락되었으며

렘51:32 모든 나루는 빼앗겼으며 갈대밭이 불탔으며 군사들이 겁에 질렸더이다 하리라

렘51:33 만군의 여호와 이스라엘의 하나님께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 딸 바벨론은 때가 이른 타작 마당과 같은지라 멀지 않아 추수 때가 이르리라 하시도다

렘51:34 바벨론의 느부갓네살 왕이 나를 먹으며 나를 멸하며 나를 빈 그릇이 되게 하며 큰 뱀 같이 나를 삼키며 나의 좋은 음식으로 그 배를 채우고 나를 쫓아내었으니

렘51:35 내가 받은 폭행과 내 육체에 대한 학대가 바벨론에 돌아가기를 원한다고 시온 주민이 말할 것이요 내 피 흘린 죄가 갈대아 주민에게로 돌아가기를 원한다고 예루살렘이 말하리라

렘51:36 그러므로 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 보라 내가 네 송사를 듣고 너를 위하여 보복하여 그의 바다를 말리며 그의 샘을 말리리니

렘51:37 바벨론이 돌무더기가 되어서 승냥이의 거처와 혐오의 대상과 탄식 거리가 되고 주민이 없으리라

렘51:38 그들이 다 젊은 사자 같이 소리 지르며 새끼 사자 같이 으르렁거리며

렘51:39 열정이 일어날 때에 내가 연회를 베풀고 그들을 취하여 기뻐하다가 영원히 잠들어 깨지 못하게 하리라 여호와의 말씀이니라

렘51:40 내가 그들을 끌어내려서 어린양과 숫양과 숫염소가 도살장으로 가는 것 같게 하리라

렘51:41 슬프다 세삭이 함락되었도다 온 세상의 칭찬 받는 성읍이 빼앗겼도다 슬프다 바벨론이 나라들 가운데에 황폐하였도다

렘51:42 바다가 바벨론에 넘침이여 그 노도 소리가 그 땅을 뒤덮었도다

렘51:43 그 성읍들은 황폐하여 마른 땅과 사막과 사람이 살지 않는 땅이 되었으니 그리로 지나가는 사람이 없도다

렘51:44 내가 벨을 바벨론에서 벌하고 그가 삼킨 것을 그의 입에서 끌어내리니 민족들이 다시는 그에게로 몰려가지 아니하겠고 바벨론 성벽은 무너졌도다

렘51:45 나의 백성아 너희는 그 중에서 나와 각기 여호와의 진노를 피하라

렘51:46 너희 마음을 나약하게 말며 이 땅에서 들리는 소문으로 말미암아 두려워하지 말라 소문은 이 해에도 있겠고 저 해에도 있으리라 그 땅에는 강포함이 있어 다스리는 자가 다스리는 자를 서로 치리라

렘51:47 그러므로 보라 날이 이르리니 내가 바벨론의 우상들을 벌할 것이라 그 온 땅이 치욕을 당하겠고 그 죽임 당할 자가 모두 그 가운데에 엎드러질 것이며

렘51:48 하늘과 땅과 그 안에 있는 모든 것이 바벨론으로 말미암아 기뻐 노래하리니 이는 파멸시키는 자가 북쪽에서 그에게 옴이라 여호와의 말씀이니라

렘51:49 바벨론이 이스라엘을 죽여 엎드러뜨림 같이 온 세상이 바벨론에서 죽임을 당하여 엎드러지리라

렘51:50 칼을 피한 자들이여 멈추지 말고 걸어가라 먼 곳에서 여호와를 생각하며 예루살렘을 너희 마음에 두라

렘51:51 외국인이 여호와의 거룩한 성전에 들어가므로 우리가 책망을 들으며 수치를 당하여 모욕이 우리 얼굴을 덮었느니라

렘51:52 보라 날이 이르리니 내가 그 우상들을 벌할 것이라 부상자들이 그 땅에서 한숨을 지으리라 여호와의 말씀이니라

렘51:53 가령 바벨론이 하늘까지 솟아오른다 하자 높은 곳에 있는 피난처를 요새로 삼더라도 멸망시킬 자가 내게로부터 그들에게 임하리라 여호와의 말씀이니라

렘51:54 바벨론으로부터 부르짖는 소리가 들리도다 갈대아 사람의 땅에 큰 파멸의 소리가 들리도다

렘51:55 이는 여호와께서 바벨론을 황폐하게 하사 그 큰 소리를 끊으심이로다 원수는 많은 물 같이 그 파도가 사나우며 그 물결은 요란한 소리를 내는도다

렘51:56 곧 멸망시키는 자가 바벨론에 이르렀음이라 그 용사들이 사로잡히고 그들의 활이 꺾이도다 여호와는 보복의 하나님이시니 반드시 보응하시리로다

렘51:57 만군의 여호와라 일컫는 왕이 이와 같이 말씀하시되 내가 그 고관들과 지혜 있는 자들과 도백들과 태수들과 용사들을 취하게 하리니 그들이 영원히 잠들어 깨어나지 못하리라

1 Samuel 14.

14:1 One day Jonathan son of Saul said to the young man bearing his armor, "Come, let's go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side." But he did not tell his father.

14:2 Saul was staying on the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. With him were about six hundred men,

14:3 among whom was Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was a son of Ichabod's brother Ahitub son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD'S priest in Shiloh. No one was aware that Jonathan had left.

14:4 On each side of the pass that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost was a cliff; one was called Bozez, and the other Seneh.

14:5 One cliff stood to the north toward Micmash, the other to the south toward Geba.

14:6 Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, "Come, let's go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised fellows. Perhaps the LORD will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few."

14:7 "Do all that you have in mind," his armor-bearer said. "Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul."

14:8 Jonathan said, "Come, then; we will cross over toward the men and let them see us.

14:9 If they say to us, 'Wait there until we come to you,' we will stay where we are and not go up to them.

14:10 But if they say, 'Come up to us,' we will climb up, because that will be our sign that the LORD has given them into our hands."

14:11 So both of them showed themselves to the Philistine outpost. "Look!" said the Philistines. "The Hebrews are crawling out of the holes they were hiding in."

14:12 The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, "Come up to us and we'll teach you a lesson." So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, "Climb up after me; the LORD has given them into the hand of Israel."

14:13 Jonathan climbed up, using his hands and feet, with his armor-bearer right behind him. The Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer followed and killed behind him.

14:14 In that first attack Jonathan and his armor-bearer killed some twenty men in an area of about half an acre.

14:15 Then panic struck the whole army--those in the camp and field, and those in the outposts and raiding parties--and the ground shook. It was a panic sent by God.

14:16 Saul's lookouts at Gibeah in Benjamin saw the army melting away in all directions.

14:17 Then Saul said to the men who were with him, "Muster the forces and see who has left us." When they did, it was Jonathan and his armor-bearer who were not there.

14:18 Saul said to Ahijah, "Bring the ark of God." (At that time it was with the Israelites.)

14:19 While Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine camp increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest, "Withdraw your hand."

14:20 Then Saul and all his men assembled and went to the battle. They found the Philistines in total confusion, striking each other with their swords.

14:21 Those Hebrews who had previously been with the Philistines and had gone up with them to their camp went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.

14:22 When all the Israelites who had hidden in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were on the run, they joined the battle in hot pursuit.

14:23 So the LORD rescued Israel that day, and the battle moved on beyond Beth Aven.

14:24 Now the men of Israel were in distress that day, because Saul had bound the people under an oath, saying, "Cursed be any man who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!" So none of the troops tasted food.

14:25 The entire army entered the woods, and there was honey on the ground.

14:26 When they went into the woods, they saw the honey oozing out, yet no one put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath.

14:27 But Jonathan had not heard that his father had bound the people with the oath, so he reached out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it into the honeycomb. He raised his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.

14:28 Then one of the soldiers told him, "Your father bound the army under a strict oath, saying, 'Cursed be any man who eats food today!' That is why the men are faint."

14:29 Jonathan said, "My father has made trouble for the country. See how my eyes brightened when I tasted a little of this honey.

14:30 How much better it would have been if the men had eaten today some of the plunder they took from their enemies. Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been even greater?"

14:31 That day, after the Israelites had struck down the Philistines from Micmash to Aijalon, they were exhausted.

14:32 They pounced on the plunder and, taking sheep, cattle and calves, they butchered them on the ground and ate them, together with the blood.

14:33 Then someone said to Saul, "Look, the men are sinning against the LORD by eating meat that has blood in it." "You have broken faith," he said. "Roll a large stone over here at once."

14:34 Then he said, "Go out among the men and tell them, 'Each of you bring me your cattle and sheep, and slaughter them here and eat them. Do not sin against the LORD by eating meat with blood still in it.'" So everyone brought his ox that night and slaughtered it there.

14:35 Then Saul built an altar to the LORD; it was the first time he had done this.

14:36 Saul said, "Let us go down after the Philistines by night and plunder them till dawn, and let us not leave one of them alive." "Do whatever seems best to you," they replied. But the priest said, "Let us inquire of God here."

14:37 So Saul asked God, "Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you give them into Israel's hand?" But God did not answer him that day.

14:38 Saul therefore said, "Come here, all you who are leaders of the army, and let us find out what sin has been committed today.

14:39 As surely as the LORD who rescues Israel lives, even if it lies with my son Jonathan, he must die." But not one of the men said a word.

14:40 Saul then said to all the Israelites, "You stand over there; I and Jonathan my son will stand over here." "Do what seems best to you," the men replied.

14:41 Then Saul prayed to the LORD, the God of Israel, "Give me the right answer." And Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot, and the men were cleared.

14:42 Saul said, "Cast the lot between me and Jonathan my son." And Jonathan was taken.

14:43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, "Tell me what you have done." So Jonathan told him, "I merely tasted a little honey with the end of my staff. And now must I die?"

14:44 Saul said, "May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if you do not die, Jonathan."

14:45 But the men said to Saul, "Should Jonathan die--he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the LORD lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today with God's help." So the men rescued Jonathan, and he was not put to death.

14:46 Then Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines, and they withdrew to their own land.

14:47 After Saul had assumed rule over Israel, he fought against their enemies on every side: Moab, the Ammonites, Edom, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment on them.

14:48 He fought valiantly and defeated the Amalekites, delivering Israel from the hands of those who had plundered them.

14:49 Saul's sons were Jonathan, Ishvi and Malki-Shua. The name of his older daughter was Merab, and that of the younger was Michal.

14:50 His wife's name was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the commander of Saul's army was Abner son of Ner, and Ner was Saul's uncle.

14:51 Saul's father Kish and Abner's father Ner were sons of Abiel.

14:52 All the days of Saul there was bitter war with the Philistines, and whenever Saul saw a mighty or brave man, he took him into his service.

Romans 12.

12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship.

12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.

12:3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.

12:4 Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function,

12:5 so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

12:6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith.

12:7 If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach;

12:8 if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

12:9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.

12:10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.

12:11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.

12:12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

12:13 Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

12:14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.

12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

12:16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

12:17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody.

12:18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

12:19 Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.

12:20 On the contrary: "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head."

12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Jeremiah 51.

51:1 This is what the LORD says: "See, I will stir up the spirit of a destroyer against Babylon and the people of Leb Kamai.

51:2 I will send foreigners to Babylon to winnow her and to devastate her land; they will oppose her on every side in the day of her disaster.

51:3 Let not the archer string his bow, nor let him put on his armor. Do not spare her young men; completely destroy her army.

51:4 They will fall down slain in Babylon, fatally wounded in her streets.

51:5 For Israel and Judah have not been forsaken by their God, the LORD Almighty, though their land is full of guilt before the Holy One of Israel.

51:6 "Flee from Babylon! Run for your lives! Do not be destroyed because of her sins. It is time for the LORD'S vengeance; he will pay her what she deserves.

51:7 Babylon was a gold cup in the LORD'S hand; she made the whole earth drunk. The nations drank her wine; therefore they have now gone mad.

51:8 Babylon will suddenly fall and be broken. Wail over her! Get balm for her pain; perhaps she can be healed.

51:9 "'We would have healed Babylon, but she cannot be healed; let us leave her and each go to his own land, for her judgment reaches to the skies, it rises as high as the clouds.'

51:10 "'The LORD has vindicated us; come, let us tell in Zion what the LORD our God has done.'

51:11 "Sharpen the arrows, take up the shields! The LORD has stirred up the kings of the Medes, because his purpose is to destroy Babylon. The LORD will take vengeance, vengeance for his temple.

51:12 Lift up a banner against the walls of Babylon! Reinforce the guard, station the watchmen, prepare an ambush! The LORD will carry out his purpose, his decree against the people of Babylon.

51:13 You who live by many waters and are rich in treasures, your end has come, the time for you to be cut off.

51:14 The LORD Almighty has sworn by himself: I will surely fill you with men, as with a swarm of locusts, and they will shout in triumph over you.

51:15 "He made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.

51:16 When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.

51:17 "Every man is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols. His images are a fraud; they have no breath in them.

51:18 They are worthless, the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish.

51:19 He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, including the tribe of his inheritance--the LORD Almighty is his name.

51:20 "You are my war club, my weapon for battle--with you I shatter nations, with you I destroy kingdoms,

51:21 with you I shatter horse and rider, with you I shatter chariot and driver,

51:22 with you I shatter man and woman, with you I shatter old man and youth, with you I shatter young man and maiden,

51:23 with you I shatter shepherd and flock, with you I shatter farmer and oxen, with you I shatter governors and officials.

51:24 "Before your eyes I will repay Babylon and all who live in Babylonia for all the wrong they have done in Zion," declares the LORD.

51:25 "I am against you, O destroying mountain, you who destroy the whole earth," declares the LORD. "I will stretch out my hand against you, roll you off the cliffs, and make you a burned-out mountain.

51:26 No rock will be taken from you for a cornerstone, nor any stone for a foundation, for you will be desolate forever," declares the LORD.

51:27 "Lift up a banner in the land! Blow the trumpet among the nations! Prepare the nations for battle against her; summon against her these kingdoms: Ararat, Minni and Ashkenaz. Appoint a commander against her; send up horses like a swarm of locusts.

51:28 Prepare the nations for battle against her--the kings of the Medes, their governors and all their officials, and all the countries they rule.

51:29 The land trembles and writhes, for the LORD'S purposes against Babylon stand--to lay waste the land of Babylon so that no one will live there.

51:30 Babylon's warriors have stopped fighting; they remain in their strongholds. Their strength is exhausted; they have become like women. Her dwellings are set on fire; the bars of her gates are broken.

51:31 One courier follows another and messenger follows messenger to announce to the king of Babylon that his entire city is captured,

51:32 the river crossings seized, the marshes set on fire, and the soldiers terrified."

51:33 This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: "The Daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor at the time it is trampled; the time to harvest her will soon come."

51:34 "Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has devoured us, he has thrown us into confusion, he has made us an empty jar. Like a serpent he has swallowed us and filled his stomach with our delicacies, and then has spewed us out.

51:35 May the violence done to our flesh be upon Babylon," say the inhabitants of Zion. "May our blood be on those who live in Babylonia," says Jerusalem.

51:36 Therefore, this is what the LORD says: "See, I will defend your cause and avenge you; I will dry up her sea and make her springs dry.

51:37 Babylon will be a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals, an object of horror and scorn, a place where no one lives.

51:38 Her people all roar like young lions, they growl like lion cubs.

51:39 But while they are aroused, I will set out a feast for them and make them drunk, so that they shout with laughter--then sleep forever and not awake," declares the LORD.

51:40 "I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams and goats.

51:41 "How Sheshach will be captured, the boast of the whole earth seized! What a horror Babylon will be among the nations!

51:42 The sea will rise over Babylon; its roaring waves will cover her.

51:43 Her towns will be desolate, a dry and desert land, a land where no one lives, through which no man travels.

51:44 I will punish Bel in Babylon and make him spew out what he has swallowed. The nations will no longer stream to him. And the wall of Babylon will fall.

51:45 "Come out of her, my people! Run for your lives! Run from the fierce anger of the LORD.

51:46 Do not lose heart or be afraid when rumors are heard in the land; one rumor comes this year, another the next, rumors of violence in the land and of ruler against ruler.

51:47 For the time will surely come when I will punish the idols of Babylon; her whole land will be disgraced and her slain will all lie fallen within her.

51:48 Then heaven and earth and all that is in them will shout for joy over Babylon, for out of the north destroyers will attack her," declares the LORD.

51:49 "Babylon must fall because of Israel's slain, just as the slain in all the earth have fallen because of Babylon.

51:50 You who have escaped the sword, leave and do not linger! Remember the LORD in a distant land, and think on Jerusalem."

51:51 "We are disgraced, for we have been insulted and shame covers our faces, because foreigners have entered the holy places of the LORD'S house."

51:52 "But days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will punish her idols, and throughout her land the wounded will groan.

51:53 Even if Babylon reaches the sky and fortifies her lofty stronghold, I will send destroyers against her," declares the LORD.

51:54 "The sound of a cry comes from Babylon, the sound of great destruction from the land of the Babylonians.

51:55 The LORD will destroy Babylon; he will silence her noisy din. Waves of enemies will rage like great waters; the roar of their voices will resound.

51:56 A destroyer will come against Babylon; her warriors will be captured, and their bows will be broken. For the LORD is a God of retribution; he will repay in full.

51:57 I will make her officials and wise men drunk, her governors, officers and warriors as well; they will sleep forever and not awake," declares the King, whose name is the LORD Almighty.

51:58 This is what the LORD Almighty says: "Babylon's thick wall will be leveled and her high gates set on fire; the peoples exhaust themselves for nothing, the nations' labor is only fuel for the flames."

51:59 This is the message Jeremiah gave to the staff officer Seraiah son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, when he went to Babylon with Zedekiah king of Judah in the fourth year of his reign.

51:60 Jeremiah had written on a scroll about all the disasters that would come upon Babylon--all that had been recorded concerning Babylon.

51:61 He said to Seraiah, "When you get to Babylon, see that you read all these words aloud.

51:62 Then say, 'O LORD, you have said you will destroy this place, so that neither man nor animal will live in it; it will be desolate forever.'

51:63 When you finish reading this scroll, tie a stone to it and throw it into the Euphrates.

51:64 Then say, 'So will Babylon sink to rise no more because of the disaster I will bring upon her. And her people will fall.'" The words of Jeremiah end here.

Psalms 30.

30:1 I will exalt you, O LORD, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me.

30:2 O LORD my God, I called to you for help and you healed me.

30:3 O LORD, you brought me up from the grave; you spared me from going down into the pit.

30:4 Sing to the LORD, you saints of his; praise his holy name.

30:5 For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

30:6 When I felt secure, I said, "I will never be shaken."

30:7 O LORD, when you favored me, you made my mountain stand firm; but when you hid your face, I was dismayed.

30:8 To you, O LORD, I called; to the Lord I cried for mercy:

30:9 "What gain is there in my destruction, in my going down into the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will it proclaim your faithfulness?

30:10 Hear, O LORD, and be merciful to me; O LORD, be my help."

30:11 You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy,

30:12 that my heart may sing to you and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give you thanks forever.
