사사기 2 장.

삿2:1 여호와의 사자가 길갈에서부터 보김으로 올라와 말하되 내가 너희를 애굽에서 올라오게 하여 내가 너희의 조상들에게 맹세한 땅으로 들어가게 하였으며 또 내가 이르기를 내가 너희와 함께 한 언약을 영원히 어기지 아니하리니

삿2:2 너희는 이 땅의 주민과 언약을 맺지 말며 그들의 제단들을 헐라 하였거늘 너희가 내 목소리를 듣지 아니하였으니 어찌하여 그리하였느냐

삿2:3 그러므로 내가 또 말하기를 내가 그들을 너희 앞에서 쫓아내지 아니하리니 그들이 너희 옆구리에 가시가 될 것이며 그들의 신들이 너희에게 올무가 되리라 하였노라

삿2:4 여호와의 사자가 이스라엘 모든 자손에게 이 말씀을 이르매 백성이 소리를 높여 운지라

삿2:5 그러므로 그 곳을 이름하여 보김이라 하고 그들이 거기서 여호와께 제사를 드렸더라

삿2:6 전에 여호수아가 백성을 보내매 이스라엘 자손이 각기 그들의 기업으로 가서 땅을 차지하였고

삿2:7 백성이 여호수아가 사는 날 동안과 여호수아 뒤에 생존한 장로들 곧 여호와께서 이스라엘을 위하여 행하신 모든 큰 일을 본 자들이 사는 날 동안에 여호와를 섬겼더라

삿2:8 여호와의 종 눈의 아들 여호수아가 백십 세에 죽으매

삿2:9 무리가 그의 기업의 경내 에브라임 산지 가아스 산 북쪽 딤낫 헤레스에 장사하였고

삿2:10 그 세대의 사람도 다 그 조상들에게로 돌아갔고 그 후에 일어난 다른 세대는 여호와를 알지 못하며 여호와께서 이스라엘을 위하여 행하신 일도 알지 못하였더라

삿2:11 이스라엘 자손이 여호와의 목전에 악을 행하여 바알들을 섬기며

삿2:12 애굽 땅에서 그들을 인도하여 내신 그들의 조상들의 하나님 여호와를 버리고 다른 신들 곧 그들의 주위에 있는 백성의 신들을 따라 그들에게 절하여 여호와를 진노하시게 하였으되

삿2:13 곧 그들이 여호와를 버리고 바알과 아스다롯을 섬겼으므로

삿2:14 여호와께서 이스라엘에게 진노하사 노략하는 자의 손에 넘겨 주사 그들이 노략을 당하게 하시며 또 주위에 있는 모든 대적의 손에 팔아 넘기시매 그들이 다시는 대적을 당하지 못하였으며

삿2:15 그들이 어디로 가든지 여호와의 손이 그들에게 재앙을 내리시니 곧 여호와께서 말씀하신 것과 같고 여호와께서 그들에게 맹세하신 것과 같아서 그들의 괴로움이 심하였더라

삿2:16 여호와께서 사사들을 세우사 노략자의 손에서 그들을 구원하게 하셨으나

삿2:17 그들이 그 사사들에게도 순종하지 아니하고 오히려 다른 신들을 따라가 음행하며 그들에게 절하고 여호와의 명령을 순종하던 그들의 조상들이 행하던 길에서 속히 치우쳐 떠나서 그와 같이 행하지 아니하였더라

삿2:18 여호와께서 그들을 위하여 사사들을 세우실 때에는 그 사사와 함께 하셨고 그 사사가 사는 날 동안에는 여호와께서 그들을 대적의 손에서 구원하셨으니 이는 그들이 대적에게 압박과 괴롭게 함을 받아 슬퍼 부르짖으므로 여호와께서 뜻을 돌이키셨음이거늘

삿2:19 그 사사가 죽은 후에는 그들이 돌이켜 그들의 조상들보다 더욱 타락하여 다른 신들을 따라 섬기며 그들에게 절하고 그들의 행위와 패역한 길을 그치지 아니하였으므로

삿2:20 여호와께서 이스라엘에게 진노하여 이르시되 이 백성이 내가 그들의 조상들에게 명령한 언약을 어기고 나의 목소리를 순종하지 아니하였은즉

삿2:21 나도 여호수아가 죽을 때에 남겨 둔 이방 민족들을 다시는 그들 앞에서 하나도 쫓아내지 아니하리니

삿2:22 이는 이스라엘이 그들의 조상들이 지킨 것 같이 나 여호와의 도를 지켜 행하나 아니하나 그들을 시험하려 함이라 하시니라

삿2:23 여호와께서 그 이방 민족들을 머물러 두사 그들을 속히 쫓아 내지 아니하셨으며 여호수아의 손에 넘겨 주지 아니하셨더라

사도행전 6 장.

행6:1 그 때에 제자가 더 많아졌는데 헬라파 유대인들이 자기의 과부들이 매일의 구제에 빠지므로 히브리파 사람을 원망하니

행6:2 열두 사도가 모든 제자를 불러 이르되 우리가 하나님의 말씀을 제쳐 놓고 접대를 일삼는 것이 마땅하지 아니하니

행6:3 형제들아 너희 가운데서 성령과 지혜가 충만하여 칭찬 받는 사람 일곱을 택하라 우리가 이 일을 그들에게 맡기고

행6:4 우리는 오로지 기도하는 일과 말씀 사역에 힘쓰리라 하니

행6:5 온 무리가 이 말을 기뻐하여 믿음과 성령이 충만한 사람 스데반과 또 빌립과 브로고로와 니가노르와 디몬과 바메나와 유대교에 입교했던 안디옥 사람 니골라를 택하여

행6:6 사도들 앞에 세우니 사도들이 기도하고 그들에게 안수하니라

행6:7 하나님의 말씀이 점점 왕성하여 예루살렘에 있는 제자의 수가 심히 많아지고 허다한 제사장의 무리도 이 도에 복종하니라

행6:8 스데반이 은혜와 권능이 충만하여 큰 기사와 표적을 민간에 행하니

행6:9 이른 바 자유민들 즉 구레네인, 알렉산드리아인, 길리기아와 아시아에서 온 사람들의 회당에서 어떤 자들이 일어나 스데반과 더불어 논쟁할새

행6:10 스데반이 지혜와 성령으로 말미암아 그들이 능히 당하지 못하여

행6:11 사람들을 매수하여 말하게 하되 이 사람이 모세와 하나님을 모독하는 말을 하는 것을 우리가 들었노라 하게 하고

행6:12 백성과 장로와 서기관들을 충동시켜 와서 잡아가지고 공회에 이르러

행6:13 거짓 증인들을 세우니 이르되 이 사람이 이 거룩한 곳과 율법을 거슬러 말하기를 마지 아니하는도다

행6:14 그의 말에 이 나사렛 예수가 이 곳을 헐고 또 모세가 우리에게 전하여 준 규례를 고치겠다 함을 우리가 들었노라 하거늘

행6:15 공중 중에 앉은 사람들이 다 스데반을 주목하여 보니 그 얼굴이 천사의 얼굴과 같더라

예레미야 15 장.

렘15:1 여호와께서 내게 이르시되 모세와 사무엘이 내 앞에 섰다 할지라도 내 마음은 이 백성을 향할 수 없나니 그들을 내 앞에서 쫓아 내보내라

렘15:2 그들이 만일 네게 말하기를 우리가 어디로 나아가리요 하거든 너는 그들에게 이르기를 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 죽을 자는 죽음으로 나아가고 칼을 받을 자는 칼로 나아가고 기근을 당할 자는 기근으로 나아가고 포로 될 자는 포로 됨으로 나아갈지니라 하셨다 하라

렘15:3 여호와의 말씀이니라 내가 그들을 네 가지로 벌하리니 곧 죽이는 칼과 찢는 개와 삼켜 멸하는 공중의 새와 땅의 짐승으로 할 것이며

렘15:4 유다 왕 히스기야의 아들 므낫세가 예루살렘에 행한 것으로 말미암아 내가 그들을 세계 여러 민족 가운데에 흩으리라

렘15:5 예루살렘아 너를 불쌍히 여길 자 누구며 너를 위해 울자 누구며 돌이켜 네 평안을 물을 자 누구냐

렘15:6 여호와께서 이르시되 네가 나를 버렸고 내게서 물러났으므로 네게로 내 손을 펴서 너를 멸하였노니 이는 내가 뜻을 돌이키기에 지쳤음이로다

렘15:7 내가 그들을 그 땅의 여러 성문에서 키로 까불러 그 자식을 끊어서 내 백성을 멸하였나니 이는 그들이 자기들의 길에서 돌이키지 아니하였음이라

렘15:8 그들의 과부가 내 앞에 바다 모래보다 더 많아졌느니라 내가 대낮에 파멸시킬 자를 그들에게로 데려다가 그들과 청년들의 어미를 쳐서 놀람과 두려움을 그들에게 갑자기 닥치게 하였으며

렘15:9 일곱을 낳은 여인에게는 쇠약하여 기절하게 하며 아직도 대낮에 그의 해가 떨어져서 그에게 수치와 근심을 당하게 하였느니라 그 남은 자는 그들의 대적의 칼에 붙이리라 여호와의 말씀이니라

렘15:10 내게 재앙이로다 나의 어머니여 어머니께서 나를 온 세계에 다투는 자와 싸우는 자를 만날 자로 낳으셨도다 내가 꾸어 주지도 아니하였고 사람이 내게 꾸이지도 아니하였건마는 다 나를 저주하는도다

렘15:11 여호와께서 이르시되 내가 진실로 너를 강하게 할 것이요 너에게 복을 받게 할 것이며 내가 진실로 네 원수로 재앙과 환난의 때에 네게 간구하게 하리라

렘15:12 누가 능히 철 곧 북방의 철과 놋을 꺾으리요

렘15:13 그러나 네 모든 죄로 말미암아 네 국경 안의 모든 재산과 보물로 값 없이 탈취를 당하게 할 것이며

렘15:14 네 원수와 함께 네가 알지 못하는 땅에 이르게 하리니 이는 나의 진노의 맹렬한 불이 너희를 사르려 함이라

렘15:15 여호와여 주께서 아시오니 원하건대 주는 나를 기억하시며 돌보시나 나를 박해하는 자에게 보복하시고 주의 오래 참으심으로 말미암아 나로 멸망하지 아니하게 하옵시며 주를 위하여 내가 부끄러움 당하는 줄을 아시옵소서

렘15:16 만군의 하나님 여호와시여 나는 주의 이름으로 일컬음을 받는 자라 내가 주의 말씀을 얻어 먹었사오니 주의 말씀은 내게 기쁨과 내 마음의 즐거움이오나

렘15:17 내가 기뻐하는 자의 모임 가운데 앉지 아니하며 즐거워하지도 아니하고 주의 손에 붙들려 홀로 앉았사오니 이는 주께서 분노로 내게 채우셨음이니이다

렘15:18 나의 고통이 계속하며 상처가 중하여 낫지 아니함은 어찌 됨이니이까 주께서는 내게 대하여 물이 말라서 속이는 시내 같으시리이까

렘15:19 여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시되 네가 만일 돌아오면 내가 너를 다시 이끌어 내 앞에 세울 것이며 네가 만일 헛된 것을 버리고 귀한 것을 말한다면 너는 나의 입이 될 것이라 그들은 네게로 돌아오려니와 너는 그들에게로 돌아가지 말지니라

렘15:20 내가 너로 이 백성 앞에 견고한 놋 성벽이 되게 하리니 그들이 너를 칠지라도 이기지 못할 것은 내가 너와 함께 하여 너를 구하여 건짐이라 여호와의 말씀이니라

렘15:21 내가 너를 악한 자의 손에서 건지며 무서운 자의 손에서 구원하리라

마가복음 1 장.

막1:1 하나님의 아들 예수 그리스도의 복음의 시작이라

막1:2 선지자 이사야의 글에 보라 내가 내 사자를 네 앞에 보내노니 그가 네 길을 준비하리라

막1:3 광야에 외치는 자의 소리가 있어 이르되 너희는 주의 길을 준비하라 그의 오실 길을 곧게 하라 기록된 것과 같이

막1:4 세례 요한이 광야에 이르러 죄 사함을 받게 하는 회개의 세례를 전파하니

막1:5 온 유대 지방과 예루살렘 사람이 다 나아가 자기 죄를 자복하고 요단 강에서 그에게 세례를 받더라

막1:6 요한은 낙타털 옷을 입고 허리에 가죽 띠를 띠고 메뚜기와 석청을 먹더라

막1:7 그가 전파하여 이르되 나보다 능력 많으신 이가 내 뒤에 오시나니 나는 그의 신발끈을 풀기도 감당하지 못하겠노라

막1:8 나는 너희에게 물로 세례를 베풀었거니와 그는 너희에게 성령으로 세례를 베푸시리라

막1:9 그 때에 예수께서 갈릴리 나사렛으로부터 와서 요단 강에서 요한에게 세례를 받으시고

막1:10 곧 물에서 올라오실새 하늘이 갈라짐과 성령이 비둘기 같이 자기에게 내려오심을 보시더니

막1:11 하늘로부터 소리가 나기를 너는 내 사랑하는 아들이라 내가 너를 기뻐하노라 하시니라

막1:12 성령이 곧 예수를 광야로 몰아내신지라

막1:13 광야에서 사십 일을 계시면서 사탄에게 시험을 받으시며 들짐승과 함께 계시니 천사들이 수종들더라

막1:14 요한이 잡힌 후 예수께서 갈릴리에 오셔서 하나님의 복음을 전파하여

막1:15 이르시되 때가 찼고 하나님의 나라가 가까이 왔으니 회개하고 복음을 믿으라 하시더라

막1:16 갈릴리 해변으로 지나가시다가 시몬과 그 형제 안드레가 바다에 그물 던지는 것을 보시니 그들은 어부라

막1:17 예수께서 이르시되 나를 따라오라 내가 너희로 사람을 낚는 어부가 되게 하리라 하시니

막1:18 곧 그물을 버려 두고 따르니라

막1:19 조금 더 가시다가 세베대의 아들 야고보와 그 형제 요한을 보시니 그들도 배에 있어 그물을 깁는데

막1:20 곧 부르시니 그 아버지 세베대를 품꾼들과 함께 배에 버려 두고 예수를 따라가니라

막1:21 그들이 가버나움에 들어가니라 예수께서 곧 안식일에 회당에 들어가 가르치시매

막1:22 뭇 사람이 그의 교훈에 놀라니 이는 그가 가르치시는 것이 권위 있는 자와 같고 서기관들과 같지 아니함일러라

막1:23 마침 그들의 회당에 더러운 귀신 들린 사람이 있어 소리 질러 이르되

막1:24 나사렛 예수여 우리가 당신과 무슨 상관이 있나이까 우리를 멸하러 왔나이까 나는 당신이 누구인줄 아노니 하나님의 거룩한 자니이다

막1:25 예수께서 꾸짖어 이르시되 잠잠하고 그 사람에게서 나오라 하시니

막1:26 더러운 귀신이 그 사람에게 경련을 일으키고 큰 소리를 지르며 나오는지라

막1:27 다 놀라 서로 물어 이르되 이는 어찜이냐 권위 있는 새 교훈이로다 더러운 귀신들에게 명한즉 순종하는도다 하더라

막1:28 예수의 소문이 곧 온 갈릴리 사방에 퍼지더라

막1:29 회당에서 나와 곧 야고보와 요한과 함께 시몬과 안드레의 집에 들어가시니

막1:30 시몬의 장모가 열병으로 누워 있는지라 사람들이 곧 그 여자에 대하여 예수께 여짜온대

막1:31 나아가사 그 손을 잡아 일으키시니 열병이 떠나고 여자가 그들에게 수종드니라

막1:32 저물어 해 질 때에 모든 병자와 귀신 들린 자를 예수께 데려오니

막1:33 온 동네가 그 문 앞에 모였더라

막1:34 예수께서 각종 병든 많은 사람을 고치시며 많은 귀신을 내쫓으시되 귀신이 자기를 알므로 그 말하는 것을 허락하지 아니하시니라

막1:35 새벽 아직도 밝기 전에 예수께서 일어나 나가 한적한 곳으로 가사 거기서 기도하시더니

막1:36 시몬과 및 그와 함께 있는 자들이 예수의 뒤를 따라가

막1:37 만나서 이르되 모든 사람이 주를 찾나이다

막1:38 이르시되 우리가 다른 가까운 마을들로 가자 거기서도 전도하리니 내가 이를 위하여 왔노라 하시고

막1:39 이에 온 갈릴리에 다니시며 그들의 여러 회당에서 전도하시고 또 귀신들을 내쫓으시더라

막1:40 한 나병환자가 예수께 와서 꿇어 엎드려 간구하여 이르되 원하시면 저를 깨끗하게 하실 수 있나이다

막1:41 예수께서 불쌍히 여기사 손을 내밀어 그에게 대시며 이르시되 내가 원하노니 깨끗함을 받으라 하신니

막1:42 곧 나병이 그 사람에게서 떠나가고 깨끗하여진지라

막1:43 곧 보내시며 엄히 경고하사

막1:44 이르시되 삼가 아무에게 아무 말도 하지 말고 가서 네 몸을 제사장에게 보이고 네 깨끗하게 되었으니 모세가 명한 것을 드려 그들에게 입증하라 하셨더라

막1:45 그러나 그 사람이 나가서 이 일을 많이 전파하여 널리 퍼지게 하니 그러므로 예수께서 다시는 드러나게 동네에 들어가지 못하시고 오직 바깥 한적한 곳에 계셨으나 사방에서 사람들이 그에게로 나아오더라

Judges 2.

2:1 The angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, "I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land that I swore to give to your forefathers. I said, 'I will never break my covenant with you,

2:2 and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall break down their altars.' Yet you have disobeyed me. Why have you done this?

2:3 Now therefore I tell you that I will not drive them out before you; they will be thorns in your sides and their gods will be a snare to you."

2:4 When the angel of the LORD had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud,

2:5 and they called that place Bokim. There they offered sacrifices to the LORD.

2:6 After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites, they went to take possession of the land, each to his own inheritance.

2:7 The people served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the LORD had done for Israel.

2:8 Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of a hundred and ten.

2:9 And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Heres in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

2:10 After that whole generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation grew up, who knew neither the LORD nor what he had done for Israel.

2:11 Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD and served the Baals.

2:12 They forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the peoples around them. They provoked the LORD to anger

2:13 because they forsook him and served Baal and the Ashtoreths.

2:14 In his anger against Israel the LORD handed them over to raiders who plundered them. He sold them to their enemies all around, whom they were no longer able to resist.

2:15 Whenever Israel went out to fight, the hand of the LORD was against them to defeat them, just as he had sworn to them. They were in great distress.

2:16 Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved them out of the hands of these raiders.

2:17 Yet they would not listen to their judges but prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped them. Unlike their fathers, they quickly turned from the way in which their fathers had walked, the way of obedience to the LORD'S commands.

2:18 Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies as long as the judge lived; for the LORD had compassion on them as they groaned under those who oppressed and afflicted them.

2:19 But when the judge died, the people returned to ways even more corrupt than those of their fathers, following other gods and serving and worshiping them. They refused to give up their evil practices and stubborn ways.

2:20 Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel and said, "Because this nation has violated the covenant that I laid down for their forefathers and has not listened to me,

2:21 I will no longer drive out before them any of the nations Joshua left when he died.

2:22 I will use them to test Israel and see whether they will keep the way of the LORD and walk in it as their forefathers did."

2:23 The LORD had allowed those nations to remain; he did not drive them out at once by giving them into the hands of Joshua.

Acts (of the Apostles) 6.

6:1 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.

6:2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.

6:3 Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them

6:4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word."

6:5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism.

6:6 They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.

6:7 So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.

6:8 Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people.

6:9 Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)--Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia. These men began to argue with Stephen,

6:10 but they could not stand up against his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke.

6:11 Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, "We have heard Stephen speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God."

6:12 So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin.

6:13 They produced false witnesses, who testified, "This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law.

6:14 For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses handed down to us."

6:15 All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

Jeremiah 15.

15:1 Then the LORD said to me: "Even if Moses and Samuel were to stand before me, my heart would not go out to this people. Send them away from my presence! Let them go!

15:2 And if they ask you, 'Where shall we go?' tell them, 'This is what the LORD says: "'Those destined for death, to death; those for the sword, to the sword; those for starvation, to starvation; those for captivity, to captivity.'

15:3 "I will send four kinds of destroyers against them," declares the LORD, "the sword to kill and the dogs to drag away and the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy.

15:4 I will make them abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth because of what Manasseh son of Hezekiah king of Judah did in Jarusalem.

15:5 "Who will have pity on you, O Jerusalem? Who will mourn for you? Who will stop to ask how you are?

15:6 You have rejected me," declares the LORD. "You keep on backsliding. So I will lay hands on you and destroy you; I can no longer show compassion.

15:7 I will winnow them with a winnowing fork at the city gates of the land. I will bring bereavement and destruction on my people, for they have not changed their ways.

15:8 I will make their widows more numerous than the sand of the sea. At midday I will bring a destroyer against the mothers of their young men; suddenly I will bring down on them anguish and terror.

15:9 The mother of seven will grow faint and breathe her last. Her sun will set while it is still day; she will be disgraced and humiliated. I will put the survivors to the sword before their enemies," declares the LORD.

15:10 Alas, my mother, that you gave me birth, a man with whom the whole land strives and contends! I have neither lent nor borrowed, yet everyone curses me.

15:11 The LORD said, "Surely I will deliver you for a good purpose; surely I will make your enemies plead with you in times of disaster and times of distress.

15:12 "Can a man break iron--iron from the north--or bronze?

15:13 Your wealth and your treasures I will give as plunder, without charge, because of all your sins throughout your country.

15:14 I will enslave you to your enemies in a land you do not know, for my anger will kindle a fire that will burn against you."

15:15 You understand, O LORD; remember me and care for me. Avenge me on my persecutors. You are long-suffering--do not take me away; think of how I suffer reproach for your sake.

15:16 When your words came, I ate them; they were my joy and my heart's delight, for I bear your name, O LORD God Almighty.

15:17 I never sat in the company of revelers, never made merry with them; I sat alone because your hand was on me and you had filled me with indignation.

15:18 Why is my pain unending and my wound grievous and incurable? Will you be to me like a deceptive brook, like a spring that fails?

15:19 Therefore this is what the LORD says: "If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve me; if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman. Let this people turn to you, but you must not turn to them.

15:20 I will make you a wall to this people, a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you to rescue and save you," declares the LORD.

15:21 "I will save you from the hands of the wicked and redeem you from the grasp of the cruel."

Mark 1.

1:1 The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

1:2 It is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way"--

1:3 "a voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'"

1:4 And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

1:5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

1:6 John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.

1:7 And this was his message: "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.

1:8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

1:9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

1:10 As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.

1:11 And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."

1:12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert,

1:13 and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.

1:14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.

1:15 "The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!"

1:16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.

1:17 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."

1:18 At once they left their nets and followed him.

1:19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.

1:20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

1:21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.

1:22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.

1:23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out,

1:24 "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"

1:25 "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!"

1:26 The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.

1:27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching--and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him."

1:28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

1:29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.

1:30 Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her.

1:31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

1:32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.

1:33 The whole town gathered at the door,

1:34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.

1:35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

1:36 Simon and his companions went to look for him,

1:37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: "Everyone is looking for you!"

1:38 Jesus replied, "Let us go somewhere else--to the nearby villages--so I can preach there also. That is why I have come."

1:39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.

1:40 A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, "If you are willing, you can make me clean."

1:41 Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!"

1:42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured.

1:43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning:

1:44 "See that you don't tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them."

1:45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
